House Democrats are bracing for defections during Thursday's vote to hold Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress after the National Rifle Association (NRA) announced they will be including the vote in their "future candidate evaluations."
"It is no secret that the NRA does not admire Attorney General Holder," a letter from the NRA to members of the House of Representatives reads. "For years, we have pointed out his history of anti-second Amendment advocacy and enforcement actions."
In an effort to persuade Democrats from voting for the contempt citation because of their fear of repercussions from the enormously powerful gun lobby, aides say that House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-MD) is actively engaging members of their caucus to encourage them to vote against the measure, something called "whipping" on Capitol Hill.
"I think there are some members that will consider the recommendations of the NRA," Hoyer said to reporters today. "Whether they think those recommendations are founded or not, I don't know at this point."
The number of Democratic defections could reach 31, according to House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-CA), whose committee voted last Wednesday to move the contempt citation to a full House vote.
Issa cites a letter sent from 31 Democrats to the Obama administration last year asking for them to be forthcoming with details of the Fast and Furious gun-walking operation as a template for possible Democratic "yes" votes.
While 31 Democrats voting for the contempt citation on Thursday may be overly optimistic, the sway of the NRA during an election year is a legitimate concern for Democrats. Democrats running in swing districts need the support of organizations like the NRA (or at least not their opposition) to stop more conservative opponents from taking them down in November.
But the NRA has made it crystal clear that it supports finding Holder in contempt of Congress, and they think members of Congress should as well.
"The reason we support the contempt resolution is the same reason we first called for Attorney General Holder's resignation more than a year ago: the Department's obstruction of congressional oversight of a program that cost lives in support of an anti-gun agenda," the NRA's letter reads. "This is an issue of the utmost seriousness and the NRA will consider this vote in our future candidate evaluations."

This comes as NO suprise!
When the NRA says jump - those who are in their pockets ask how high...
Then the MSM & blog trolls will spin it like this is somehow something new!
There are 14 guns for every man, woman, and child legally in the United States, and many vote. Many voters in 2010 own guns. Clearly politicians who wish reelection should not tick off gun owners.
Wishful thinkers discount the 2010 tea party block.
And this is something we are supposed to be proud of?
Why does someone need 14 guns to kill something?
Wouldn't one suffice?
In my hands yes.
In yours no.
Let's see if I have this straight...
Felons can and do by guns at gun shows in order to get around background check requirements...that's good.
Felons acquire guns through an ill-considered plan by law enforcement officials beginning in the Bush II Administration and it's Eric Holder's fault, possibly even Barack Obama's fault.
Well, that makes as much sense as anything else the NRA says.
If the NRA wasn't concerned about the truth, why wouldn't they just remain silent ....
Afterall .... nothing and no one has ever done anything more for gun sales and gun ownership than the election of Obama.
Feisty - seems a lot of those gns are in Chicago!!!
HuffPo
As Chicago residents face a murder rate that, thus far this year, is worse than U.S. troops in Afghanistan, the Chicago Police Department has assigned at least 100 officers to secure the wedding of White House advisor Valerie Jarrett's daughter.
President Barack Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama and their daughters Malia and Sasha arrived in Chicago Friday evening ahead of the Saturday wedding of Laura Jarrett, which will be held in a backyard in the city's Kenwood neighborhood. And that wedding is, expectedly, set to be a high-security affair.
The Chicago Sun-Times' Michael Sneed reports that between 100 and 200 Chicago police officers will be on site to help "secure the perimeter" of the wedding.
Sneed further reports that the city will not be reimbursed for the police security by the federal government.
The directive for police to cover the Jarrett wedding arrives at a time where Chicago is facing a surge in its homicide rate. The Daily pointed out in a Friday column that more Chicago residents -- 228 -- have been killed so far this year in the city than the number of U.S. troops killed in Afghanistan - 144 -- over the same period.
The war zone-like statistics are not new. As WBEZ reports, while some 2,000 U.S. troops have been killed in Afghanistan since 2001, more than 5,000 people have been killed by gun fire in Chicago during that time, based on Department of Defense and FBI data.
Chicago's murder rate is also currently quadruple that of New York and double Los Angeles' rate. Gun violence Friday evening into Saturday took the lives of at least one person -- Antonio Buck, of the 5400 block of South Aberdeen -- and wounded at least seven others, including a 16-year-old boy shot in the lower back around 11 p.m. Friday.
Hey John B, millions of Americans with not so much as a parking ticket buy guns at gun shows, from their neighbor across the street, at garage sales, wherever, and feel comfort knowing they are not on a list of people in a government office somewhere.
Ammunition is commonly purchased by decent Americans for cash from dealers with not so much as a video camera running.
The NRA trains people how to handle a piece without hurting themselves and to only hit targets they intend to hit.
Nope John, backasswards as usual.
Up to 75% of the tables at gun shows are FFL dealers (federal firearm license) who have to follow all provisions / laws of gun sales. (Most if not all of the other tables sell scopes, hunting gear, re-loading supplies / equipment, knives, accessories, cases, artwork, t-shirts ....)
Wrong again.
Bush ran sting operations like (in one form or another) every police department in the US.
Bush arrested the buyers, or tracked the guns and arrested the next buyer, or in certain conditions and WORKING IN COOPERATION WITH MEXICAN AUTHORITIES notified Mexican authorities of the guns entering Mexico.
BUSH NEVER SIMPLY LET THE GUNS WALK INTO THE MEXICAN DRUG CARTELS.
Obama/Holder intentionally did.
Obama/Holder intentionally told agents to not track guns, to not arrest gun runners, to stand down as guns were being transferred .... Obama and Holder wantonly let the guns walk into Mexico and the drug cartels .... AND NEVER INFORMED MEXICO!
These guys are despicable.
Why do you defend them?
Because YOU say so????
Got sources?
Well WE do....
Old feisty blowing in the wind. Good communist!
Hey! If there's 14 guns for every man, woman and child in the U.S. I'm not getting my fair share! Guess I need to go out and buy 13 more guns. Yeah, that's the ticket. God Bless the NRA, nobody else with half a mind will.
That's so cute, poor feisty cant imagine why someone would buy multiple guns, guess that just shows the ignorance on the left, "if i dont do it, no one should", what a bunch of arrogant buffoons, just like your leader.
Just how do you manage to be the first post so often at this sight ?
Wouldn't you like too know - talk to your conspiracy theorist buddies! lol
Slow & stupid is NO way to go through life Goober! ;o)
I find highly laughable when morons like Feisty shooting thier mouths off about why would one need 14 guns...it only takes 1 to kill something? Pea brain nut job whackos like you don't know sh*t about target and competition shooting as a sport.
31 defections redhead......31 !!!!......your boy Holder is going down.....and Al Sharpton is back claimin' racism.....again.....I LOVE IT
You love it because you are a racist, that's easy to discern. The NRA is in this because Holder stands up to them, while most politicians run like scared rats every time the low lives from this despicable organization blink. This is America so the NRA is allowed to exist but so are neo-nazi groups and the KKK.
Pretty telling when the Democrats refer to those in their own party that do the right thing as "defectors".
@oatswilly
...and don't forget the New Black Panther Party. Holder seemed to believe they could commit voter intimidation at a polling place, which was caught on video. Nothing happened to them. Wonder why?
Forgot about them when you made your list, huh?
Funny how liberals are conjuring voter suppression and race as the reason Holder will be held in contempt. Finding out the truth behind fast and furious or why the DOJ lied to Congress never enters their minds. Now liberals will blame the NRA for defections in Democrats voting for contempt and not because it is the right thing to do. Well one thing for sure, the entire Democratic Party machine from Obama to the Civil Rights leaders are never at a loss for excuses or blame.
Well, with a 9% approval rating (and dropping) it apprears Mr. Holder is with the vast majority of American citizens....
Pretty lame to consider reciting facts to be "excuses or blame" don't you think...
But I guess that is all you have to pin any hope to this election; try to convince voters that we didn't really experience economic disaster when Republicans were in the White House and Dumbya/Cheney wasn't really all that bad; saying that Bush started the unfunded, expensive war in Iraq is just placing blame instead of taking over the consequenses of what the administration did between 2001 and 2009...
ignorant and assinine - but that is your sales pitch because you know you don't have any chance reciting the facts.
holder is going down hope he drags his boss with him!
And after this Holder witch hunt, lets investigate Bush & Cheney and see how many Americans were killed by their actions & decisions and weapons THEY put in the hands of terrorists... (HINT: a whole lot more than one DEA agent by about 5,000)
Bush/Cheney war crime? Let us investigate....
No-bid military contracts for Cheney's company? Indict him!
High crimes, misdemeanors, malfeasance, negligence & plain stupidity for the Wall street meltdown and for taking a balanced federal budget with surplus and decimating it? Prosecute them!
Heck Duane.... why stop with Mr. Holder? Lets go after the big fish and the ones who truly deserve to be held accountable.
Hypocrit....
You see, Feisty, too many like you think people only own guns for one reason, so they can kill somebody else - typical of your narrow mindset and it fits your agenda to accuse gun owners of being bloodthirsty killers!
Actually, there are many reasons people own more than one gun (that have nothing to do with killing another human) , motor-heads like Jay Leno, collect cars, kids collect baseball cards, fishermen have more than one rod, and so on and so on - but I know these thoughts are not going to change your mind because you can see only one side of this issue - YOURS! I'm expressing another side of this issue so that others can read this and see that your mindset is corrupted by your anti-gun position. I understand there are many who side with you, but, there are many more people - like Paul Harvey says: who "now know the rest of the story". Unlike you, I am a multi-gun owner and I will not call anti-gun people rude nick names or try to defame them in any way....this is America and we all have the right to exercise not only our 2nd Amendment rights but also our 1st Amendment right. And, unlike you, we don't believe we have the right to try and take your constitutional rights away from you simply because we don't agree with any particular one you have exercise.....Constitutional rights are what they are and you are what you are!
All of my guns have STILL killed less people than Ted Kennedy's car....
And Holder's proposed "deal"... I'll give you "some" documents (ie the ones I know aren't incriminating to me and Obozo), if you promise not to ask for any more... duh, every criminal on earth would take that deal.... yes, I was parked illegally... so we can forget all about the murder investigation???
Scott,
How did you arrive at this gun number per capita?
http://www.gunpolicy.org/firearms/region/united-states
This source indicates 270,000,000 in 2007. With a 2007 populaytion of just over 300M, I don't see 14 per person.
Fiesty is Tyler and that is how
she always posts first and is never disciplined for her vitriol.I have no guns at all. Officially.
Not so stupid just cannot give up the Bush years. Can't seem to face up to the fact that regardless of what Bush did, using it to justify Obama will never make it right. Bush is no longer president, so pull on some big boy pants and hold Obama as accountable. Giving Obama a pass because you can cite a Bush deed is not only stupid, it is hypocrisy at its finest. Nothing but blame and excuses from the liberals, and none of it has helped this country.
MURDER INC. (NRA) investigate them and lock them up
Rational AmeriCAN
Wow, that could actually fit! Interesting
UAW,
MURDER INC. (NRA) investigate them and lock them up
Arrest them for what specifically? Advocating upholding the US Constitution and Laws? If that's a crime, our AG has nothing to worry about
Will you people stop listening to everything that Think Progress spews out? The Bush Administration's "Wide Receiver" program has NOTHING to do with the Obama Administration's "Fast & Furious" program.
Wide Receiver used guns with GPS devices implanted in them so they could be tracked and about 1,500 arrests were made. The program ended when the criminals started to remove the GPS devices. That happened two years before Fast & Furious. The effort to connect the two programs is just another liberal attempt to blame a very bad Obama decision on Bush.
Was it Bush's fault that Holder tried to cover up the program with an even worse decision by Obama to issue an unsustainable executive privilege decision. Looks like Obama-Holder is sounding a lot like Nixon-Mitchell.
So it's not just the Democrats that know how to play 'hardball'.
What will Feisty do with her life after the November elections, and Obama goes back to Chicago, no more blogs no more staring at the monitor all day it will be a sad life, but if you ever need a friend feisty Im here for you. don't even insult me cause I voted for Obama in 08 but wont this year, you see Feisty I have the ability to think for my self, and I'm no Obamabot
Peace!
Not all gun owners agree with the BS the NRA lobbies for.
I own guns and I vote Democratic and I could not care less about the NRA scoring of our legislators
Okay, once more, slowly.
Holder and Obama didn't approve F&F. Holder probably found out about it long after it had begun, when the wheels started coming off. It was conceived (stupidly), approved (foolishly), and implemented (naively) by people far below the AG on the organizational chart. That's first.
Second, anyone who believes that the people who were killed with F&F guns wouldn't have been killed anyway by guns bought elsewhere is ignorant beyond redemption.
Third, under any other circumstances, the right-wingers who are expressing such righteous indigation over Mexican authorities not being informed would be beating their chests and swinging from the rafters screaming about how corrupt every official in Mexico is, and how we shouldn't trust them in any situation. In fact, that is quite possibly the reason that the nitwits running F&F didn't inform them.
Fourth, if there was a republican in the White House right now under these circumstances, all of the talking heads on FoxNews telling you right wingers what to think would be droning on and on about how the president has to have the right to invoke executive privilege to be able to operate in a dangerous world. I know, I saw them do it numerous times during the dark, dark days of the Bush II administration.
Fifth, the NRA is and always has been just a lobbying arm of the RNC. They've been trying to find something to hang their hat on for almost 4 years that they could use to say Obama wants to take everyone's guns away. As much as some of us would love to see the 2nd amendment repealed, Obama has shown zero interest in infringing on your beloved gun ownership.
Fisty, its no surprise because people are getting wise to the deceptions of this administration. Probably one of the most corrupt in modern history.
I'm sorry, just because you hear that on your conservative radio, doesn't make it true.
after all, every body knows what corruption really looks like. just look at my avatar if you need a refresher.
RedSoxRule - more of your same stupidity you spout every day because you can't come up with an original thought. The most corrupt administration in the lifetime of our country will forever be the Bush/Cheney regime.
That's what Issa said way back. Poor guy was getting all geared up to take on the administration's corruption, and then found he didn't have a peg to hang his hat on. So now he's finally got his moment in the sun, pushing a blatantly political conspiracy theory fabricated by partisan operatives in the media. Hey, if you can't find any scandals, you can always make one up, right?
This side show has always been about the NRA. Their leadership is convinced that Holder is trying to pry their assault weapons out of their cold dead fingers.
Seeking Sanity
You must be a youngster if you are unaware of the moral corruption of the Nixon Administration. Tricky Dick got his start by playing the Commie Scare and followed it up by using every dirty and illegal trick using secret slush funds to pay for illegal opposition intelligence.
The NRA has become a right wing political hack of an organization. Having nothing to do with gun rights any longer but spouting conspiracy and fear and anything they can to sell more guns for their gun manufacturer donors. My husband has hung up on them and regrets ever being a member of the NRA. They are blatant racist fear mongers just for the sake of more gun sales. Nothing uglier than that. Would never vote for a Republican at this time but any Democrat pandering to the NRA needs to be replaced by a sane citizen who will never pander to someone selling death. Yes, I live in the West and own guns. Still hate the NRA.
And Obama makes Tricky Dick look like a piker.
Nixon never imagined that you could just change law by fiat, ignore the Constitution, choose what laws you like and don't like to enforce .... and still be elected.
Thanks for the daytime drama congress. Now, maybe you can start working on getting that approval rating of yours back up into the double digits.
Redsox, you got Limbaugh on the brain-- that is, if you have a brain after listening to Limbaugh.
Probably the funniest thing to come out of the Obama administration is their questioning whether Romney is qualified to be president. A catchy campaign slogan and the ability to read a speech was all Obama had to offer, and Democrats quickly labeled him the smartest man to ever sit in the oval office. After 3.5 years of failure, it might be time for Democrats to raise their standard for qualifications. Because an ability to fog a mirror is hardly worth anyone's vote.

Please read the Fortune article detailing the gritty story behind the Fast and Furious debacle. I know its a little long and uses some big words but give it a try.
It details how a dedicated and competent Federal Officer was absolutely eviscerated by state and federal prosecutors who tied his hands behind his back and said "OK go catch the bad guys". Throw in a childish recalcitrant subordinate, mix in the gun nut crowd, catch the eye of CBS in need of a "gotcha" story add a right wing gun nut Republican publicity hound and you have created a perfect imbroglio for the NRA.
The story flashes a warning to anyone contemplating a career as a Federal Officer how swiftly you will be thrown to the wolves for political advantage.
You see, Feisty, too many like you think people only own guns for one reason, so they can kill somebody else - typical of your narrow mindset and it fits your agenda to accuse gun owners of being bloodthirsty killers!

ok answer me this, what was the reason for the fast and furious program?
It does not sound like they really tried to prevent the guns from ending up with the bad guys. I have heard audio of them forcing gun shop owners to sell guns to known gun runners.
So please explain how this was supposed to do anything other than give guns to the mexican drug lords?
Defections, no, I don't think so...but this does say alot about the idealogy of the progressive/liberals. Voting your conscious rather then party line is now considered a defection...what a very sad statement
Ana's Bananas:
Actually dear Ana there is something uglier than that. That's pulling the race card whenever someone disagrees with your point of view. Go join the Sierra Club (most likely already a member) if you want to see a high dollar partisan organization who uses intimidation tactics to purchase politicians votes. Take off your partisan blinders Ms. Ed. WIIIIILLLBERRRR!
Democrats. Can you please grow a spine? Dem. Congressional members who vote with Republicans on this should be ashamed to be swayed by this bunch of bullies! You would get much more respect by voting your conscience.
I am not often forced to admit that I admire the DNC...But God, this DNC pre-spin machine is a Freaking Work Of ART..."Democrats are not voting to indict Holder because it is the Law, We are doing it because we are being pressured to do it by the Conservatives"...Freaking B e a u tiful...They all deserve to be re-elected, for no other reason than the size of their Gonads
On the other side of the Isle...it sounds something like this...we are voting for the Ryan Budget because "Green Peace" made us do it
Or Conservatives could just be lying about the whole thing, as they do on most topics;
http://features.blogs.fortune.cnn.com/2012/06/27/fast-and-furious-truth/
The NRA as a group, are amongst the most traitorous of Americans. They don't care about truth, they don't care about rule of law, they simply care about power.
This vote against Holder is a partisan witch hunt. Holder defied the "teabaggers" and went after the Republican Governors on the Voters Right Act and refused to be intimidated.
Just a Clinton redux. The Republicans can't win the Presidency at that ballot box, so they must steal it, either by suppressing the Constitutionally protected right to vote, or to find some doggone reason to impeach the President.
When are all of you paranoid conspiracy minded fringe right wingers going to get this figured out?
Check this out NDD,
They are not even attempting to hide their objective anymore!
Gremlins are chomping on the bubblegum again!
Fisty, you are getting more like dimwit Joe Biden by the minute. It will hurt libbys because they have so many illegal votes. You know, all the dead people that voted for Obama, all the illegal immigrants that voted for Obama, all the dogs that voted for Obama, etc..
I saw that Feisty, and you have to wonder how any right thinking American would support something like that.
I have a feeling this era will be held in the same contempt as McCarthy in the 50's. No real difference between the two groups.
illegal immigrants do have voting right, oh never mind I for got who I'm quoting.
I keep forgetting, not to be suck in to the black hole of idiots, that is "redsuckrules".
NDD said this - The Republicans can't win the Presidency at that ballot box, so they must steal it
Then NDD said this - When are all of you paranoid conspiracy minded fringe right wingers going to get this figured out?
I tell ya folks you just can't make this stuff up!
illegal immigrants have voting rights. Oh, that's right you're a libby and as long as they breath they have voting rights. You guys are getting more insane by the minute. What's up with that?
Oh, look, Feisty, I see you have another "stalker" following you around. Everytime I see one of them, I smile because you so obviously annoy them to the point they cannot help but make fools of themselves.
Chris, you got that right. Odd, though, that the people convicted of voter fraud are republicans!
Poor elected TeaPeople......
Threats from the NRA and Grover......they are watched and extorted everytime a vote comes up!
Nah Jody!
This one is a reincarnation of penguin-boy...
*yawn*
Jody,
Chris, you got that right. Odd, though, that the people convicted of voter fraud are republicans!
Source please.
The NRA are liberals? Damn, i never would have known that if you didnt tell me.
[I tell ya folks you just can't make this stuff up!]
No, you can't...so just how many times did you roll off the changing table because your rubber band surely gets wound tight pretty quick...
Now come out from behind Spanky's skirt...
Mickey,
Spanky is out of the country isn't that enough for you?
The NRA (and I have many friends who are members) are focused on one thing, gun rights. I've had discussions where they tell me that "no other rights are as important as the Second Amendment ones because without guns the government would take all our other rights away." They are interested in little else. I've discussed requiring and documenting safety training before buying a gun and been told "that is an infringement of our rights!"
With respect to "Fast and Furious" and the NRA's contempt for AG Holder, in August of 2011 the NRA essentially told the US/ATF that they wanted and approved of unrestricted, unregulated, and unreported mass sales of assault rifles regardless of to whom. They did this by seeking a court order to shut down AG Holder's requirement that southwestern border gun dealers report mass sales. (source: www. foxnews.com/politics/2011/08/03/gun-groups-to-sue-over-new-obama-regulations-doj-vows-to-vigorously-oppose/ )
Weird matthew, cuz i have NRA member friends and they just believe the 2nd amendment is just as legitimate as every other constitutional right. They arent afraid of the government, actually many of them work for the fed, they just dont think that they should have to give up their rights because some libs are afraid of guns.
BTW gun owners know that owning a gun is a responsibilty as much as a right, something libs ignore when they discuss their concept of rights.
Ummm... NO!
With any luck they will revoke the little pricks passport!
Nothing like a supposed real American spending his pocket change at some all-inclusive slum in Mexico! lmao!
According to the bull@!$%# artist he's filthy rich - yet he chooses to spend his vacation as a broke ass American!
You really... really can NOT make this @!$%# up - house mouse!
I agree that it IS "just as legitimate." It's just not more so. Being a multiple gun owner I agree that there are responsibilities. I believe in the need for safe hunters courses, concealed carry courses, and evidence to show that the person has taken and proficiently passed these things. It's called a gun license.
I find it weird that some people think the government only wants gun licenses and registration "so they know who the gun owners are and take the guns away." (Quoted from at least two of my friends)
55,000 Mexicans murdered. Guns outlawed in Mexico. No way to defend themselves against well-armed cartels. Holder stated that Americans must be 'brainwashed' into giving up their guns and isn't it interesting how Fast and Furious is working out? NRA? Well, I'm surprised democrats would be listening to them, they are the enemy, afterall.
Feisty's filthy mouth at it again, wonder how come she never gets nailed for COH violations? Interesting how that immunity from following the code works here. Then, quotes from unbiased sources like 'Think Progress' it would be amusing if it wasn't so sad.
Matthew, I don't know where you live, but ALL states require hunter safety courses. Also, your knowledge of the NRA is sorely lacking. The NRA actually endorses, and sponsors gun training. Did you somehow miss "Women On Target"? My gun club holds the NRA TRAINED Women On Target program every year-you know-the one that has a female NRA instructor-and it is very popular. I think you need to study up on things.
By the way, since I've hunted with the bow, muzzleloader, and shotgun (not to mention centerfires), for 32 years, what "mandatory" training do you think I need to own a firearm? Also, as noted in my avatar, I served 14 years in the Army, and shot the M16, SAW, M60, and the .50 cal., not to mention howitzers. So, please enlighten me as to what further "mandatory" training I need???
13BVET - Thank you for your service.
Typical that extremists would paint educated, experienced gun owners as backwoods rednecks. We aren't all just out of Jr. High School...
I started my "training" with a gun in my hands as a pre-teen. The gun was put there by my family. I was taught MUCH more than a hunter safety course could teach me from people who cared for me. It's one thing to sit in a class & have someone tell you something. It's another thing to get smacked in the back of the head for not unloading your weapon before coming back to the truck...
NOTHING beats real world experience - NOTHING.
newdayDAWNING...RETURNED
Entertaining rant... now take your Lithium....
if Holder would spend his time going after law breakers instead of prosecuting officers of the law and hampering state rights, he wouldn't be in the position he is in. Border patrol agents arrested and prosecuted for shooting a drug smuggler in the ass, going after Maricopa sherrif Jos Arpio, the long list shows Holder to be anti law and pro crime.
Jody,
What is wrong with voter ID?
newdayDAWNING...RETURNED said ...."the most traitorous of Americans. They don't care about truth, they don't care about rule of law, they simply care about power."
That is a pretty harsh, but albeit accurate description of the Obama administration.
I actually did a search about Turzai's remarks looking for a conservative take on them. Couldn't find any, except that his "spokesman" said that he was "playing to a partisan crowd". That's troubling, not to mention what he said about pro-life legislation. It's sad to me to see what the republicans have become. My dear 90-year old father is still a staunch supporter and I hate to see him align himself with a party that has strayed so far from the principles he holds so dear.
13BVET - first, thank you for your service.
Secondly, you misunderstand my perspective on this. I hunt, I fish. My dad taught me and took me. I have my hunting license and have had it since 1976.
My perspective is that 2nd Amendment rights are no more and no less important than any other right. To be told it is "the most important" kind of raises my ire since it directly diminishes the others.
I also believe that all rights, as guaranteed in the Constitution, should be enforced equally and equitably across all States in the US. This means gun laws are the same everywhere. Now understand that no right is absolute. Every right has limitations. These limitations are based on public safety.
Now I respect that you know how to use a gun and care for it properly. You were raised by a gun family and you served in the military. I do not assume that everyone has your knowledge or experience. Therefore a gun license that proves you have taken safety classes (yes, offered by the NRA but NOT required in all states to buy a gun) or even an equivalency as demonstrated by military service helps to keep some idiot from blowing the head off of a 2-year old by being stupid an not knowing what they are doing. I'd even suggest that the NRA get behind this and help instead of fighting every new gun law suggestion as reduction in gun rights.
Think about it, one nation wide documented gun standard could = concealed carry reciprocity every where, confirmation of hunter safety class (ease of getting an out of state hunting license), standardized open carry law, standardized insurance requirements and protections, and maybe even lead to standardized laws for things like castle doctrine. (On a separate subject, I think Zimmerman is guilty of at least manslaughter specifically because he failed to obey the police dispatcher who told him not to follow. Stand your ground means protect yourself where you are, it doesn't mean follow and engage in an altercation.)
I also stand by my statement that the NRA fought to keep gun dealers from having to report mass assault weapon sales in SW border states and so tacitly condones straw purchases for the drug cartels.
rick -"the most traitorous of Americans. They don't care about truth, they don't care about rule of law, they simply care about power."
That is a pretty harsh, but albeit accurate description of the Obama administration.
OK Congressional Dems - grow a spine and stand up to the bully NRA! You would get much more RESPECT.
Well, imagine that, the NRA is backing this witch hunt. It should be no surprise that the NRA is behind this investigation because they do not care about people, illegal or legal, they only care about how many more guns they can sell to whomever wants them, legal and illegal.
We wonder what is wrong with Government. Take a look. The NRA is a good place to start. Then check out all the other lobbyists, the big money donors to campaigns, the multi-billionaires who expect something in return. If we want a working government for the people and not for the special interests or those who have the most, the best way to get it is through public financing of elections. Get money out of politics and we would go a long way to limiting the power of groups such as the NRA, Koch Industries, Exxon Mobile, Wall Street..... Too bad, we're so opposed to increasing taxes that we cut off our noses to spite our faces.
Problem is that this witch hunt is finding real witches
Oh No,
Get a clue...their is no such thing as a "real" witch.
Well, all Holder and Obama have to do to prove they're not covering something up is turn over the documents.... Now we need a catchier name... Murdergate???
"A Fortune investigation reveals that the ATF never intentionally allowed guns to fall into the hands of Mexican drug cartels. How the world came to believe just the opposite is a tale of rivalry, murder, and political bloodlust."
That's the subtitle of an "investigation" from Fortune Magazine today, or in other words, a full out distortion and dismissal of the facts in the Fact and Furious case. The article is long and I'm not going to take the time to debunk the entire thing, but just a few points.
First, the article gives a full defense of corrupt ATF Supervisor David Voth while smearing gun dealers as massive suppliers of drug cartels.
Fact: During Operation Fast and Furious, gun dealers repeatedly emailed Voth, asking whether guns they were selling under orders from ATF, were ending up in the wrong hands. Voth assured them they were not. More than two thousands guns trafficked into Mexico and hundreds of dead victims later, that turned out to be a lie. Gun dealers repeatedly raised concerns about ATF telling them to allow straw purchasers using false ID and loads of cash to buy weapons. In 2010, a gun dealer email Voth because a straw purchaser had placed a large order and the dealer wanted to know if he should order more stock. Once again, so he could comply with ATF's order to sell. Voth told him, go right ahead. Order the guns, sell to the bad guys.
On June 17, 2010 a concerned dealer wrote, "As per our discussion about over communicating I wanted to share some concerns that came up. Tuesday night I watched a segment of a Fox News report about firearms and the border. The segment, if the information was correct, is disturbing to me. When you, Emory and I met on May 13th I shared my concerns with you guys that I wanted to make sure that none of the firearms that were sold per our converstation with you and vaious ATF agents could or would ever end up south of the border or in the hands of the bad guys. I guess I am looking for a bit of reassurance that the guns are not getting south or in wrong hands. I know it is an ongoing investigation so there is limited information you can share with me. But as I said in our meeting, I want to help ATF with its investigation but not at the rish of agents [sic] safety because I have some very close firends that are U.S. Border Patrol agents in southern AZ as well as my concern for all the agents [sic] safety that protect our country. If possible please email me back and share with me any reassurances that you can. As always thank you for your time and I send this email with all respect and a heart felt concern to do the right thing."
Voth sent an email on April 2, 2010 saying, "Our subjects purchased 359 firearms during the month of March alone, to include numerous Barrett .50 caliber rifles," he went on, "I believe we are righteous in our plan to dismantle this entire organization and to rush in to arrest any one person without taking in to account the entire scope of the conspiracy would be ill advices to the overall good of the mission." In another email, Voth mentioned 1200 people killed in March 2010, yet still called the program "righteous."
You can read more about Voth here.
Next, the Fortune article claims officials directly involved in Fast and Furious never intentionally trafficked guns into Mexico and and actually seized guns.
The guns sold during Fast and Furious didn't "eventually fall into criminal hands," they were put there intentionally as soon as ATF approved the sale of those guns to guys they knew were straw purchasers before they even walked through the door of the gun dealerships. Not to mention, weapons were never seized until they were found at violent crime scenes; 1400 remain missing.
And of course, according to Fortune, this whole Fast and Furious scandal has been drummed up by...right wing bloggers!
Right, exposing the horrors of this scandal according to Fortune is simply bloggers, CBS and Issa "amplifying" "complaints" made by ATF Whistleblower John Dodson. More like, telling the truth, Fortune.
Also, Fortune quotes an IRS agent, but why was the IRS involved in Operation Fast and Furious? Because the IRS in partnership with ATF were giving gun dealers participating in the program advice about how to do their taxes with such a large inflow of cash.
And of course, the Fortune article mocks Arizona for being a pro-Second Amendment state while implying the reason for cartel violence in Mexico is because of limited gun control laws in the state when it was ATF who was deliberately trafficking weapons directly to the cartels in Mexico and doing nothing about it. This is simply an attempt to put a sliver of reasonable doubt into the minds of potential jurors should supervisors like Voth face criminal prosecution down the road.
The rest of my rebuttle to Fortune can be completed by reading my book.
Becca Watkins, House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform spokeswoman, has issued the following statement:
The administration had to see this coming. It will be an interesting to see who votes to hold to AG Holder in contempt.
The NRA is just a partisan political organization. Any Democrat who thinks they can be placated is fooling themselves.
Actually several Democratic congressmen get A's from the NRA. Uh, none of them from Illinois though....
America - Are you going to let all these special interest groups run your country? I really thought you were better and stronger than that! You are a bunch of wimps if you cave.
Well, SOMEBODY has to be in charge!
what about PETA, Greenpeace, and other organizations like that? are you going to condemn their actions as well?
I don't get it, I thought the NRA was all for gun and gun sales. And by extension I thought they had no problem with guns sold in the US going to Mexico and to criminals such as, from all the guns confiscated in crimes in other states and Mexico being traced to gun stores in Virginia.
Now if their point is "Impeach any and all members of the current administration" then fine, I understand that position. Otherwise NRA can just STHU.
"Guns" is just another red herring issue to get the "freedom lovers" all excited. I remember in 2008 gun and bullet sales and prices were through the roof because Obama had been elected. Now, 3 1/2 years later, no new restrictions on guns and bullets.
I'm sure the NRA will sell the freedom lovers the same apocalyptic schtick since said lovers of freedom are too dumb to remember they were ripped off before. NRA will say Obama was just waiting for re-election in 2012 to get his REAL agenda started.
But I live in Georgia and therefore I am used to knuckle-dragging idiots. Heart of America!
Add Texas gun shows to the list. Tracking some of the weapons used in murders by drug cartels and such leads to Texas!
Be proud NRA!
Well technically it's just one more thing obama hasnt done in 3.5years. So he still hasnt done anything but say illegals arent legal, and we all have to contribute to his med insurance donors.
Yo, guess you didn't catch where Fast and Furious didn't put any tracking devices on those guns. Wonder why? As to gun restrictions, a re-elected (God forbid) Obama will unfold his little wings in all their glory once those pesky elections are over. Unfettered and free of any obstructions to his agendas, then you will see what-all you have denied in the past about his agendas. Rather like the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, folks said 'nah, they won't win' and lo, they have won. Interesting, no?
Hey Michael Marr,
If you hate Georgia so much, please move.
We won't miss you for a minute.
Well, obviously he didn't wait until his second term. Fast and Furious was the "under the radar" means of getting more gun control legislation that he alluded to. But now you have the parents of a slain Border Patrol agent wanting to know who's responsible... and that would be masters of deception... Holder and Obama...
Why in the world would Democrats be afraid of "defections"? Can Nancy pelosi not keep the troops in line? Why not?
Since most Democrats seem to have little or no use for the NRA, why would they be in the LEAST bit concerned about them?
Those up for re-election are running scared not only because they receive contributions from the NRA but also Citizen's United has the ability to raise large sums to oppose that candidate.
Good to know the Democrats are set to vote for in the best interest of their re-elections instead of voting what they believe in.
Yeah, Candice, good point there, because if they actually voted their CONSCIENCE, not a one of them would "defect".
When haven't they. Obama has been in re-election mode for 3 1/2 years.
In your perfect Progressive world, honest answers to the parents of a slain Border Patrol agent would be irrelevant... because to you moral relativists conscience vs idealogy always results in idealogy.... but maybe, just maybe, some Congressmen aren't going to drink the Obama koolaid on this one...
Save us your phony indignation...if your concerns were real you'd be Fed Up with Issa refusing to investigate similar programs that originated with the same bureaucrats when they worked for the Bush Administration.
I would just be happy if each one voted for the lawful way, the problem is most let the party dictate their vote, and not what is correct for the country. The problem is they have not moral conseience. They just vote to protect fellow criminals. Holder agreed to turn over all documents, (i think even before he know what was really in them) then changed his mind. Congress has the right and the obagation to check out what happened and correct it. I just hope the Democrats can make a honest and correct vote, dispite their wanting to cover up felow Democrat crimes. So far the president failed to honor his campain promice to make government more tansparent, instead he put up an iron curtian of his own. The other programs didn't cover up crimes that were carried out in this country and Mexico. There comes a time when a speeding car goes over the speed limit and then it becomes a crime.
How is the NRA publishing the way Congressmen and women vote any different than any of the many other organizations that do the same thing?
Being that Border patrol agent Brian Terry's death can be directly attributed to the Federal Governments illegal "Gun Walking" scheme and the Attorney Generals and subsequently the Presidents attempt to cover up their involvment. I would hope that the Dems that "Defect" are in fact voting their conscience.
Any concern for the border agent killed is bogus by this bunch of corrupt republicans. What really burned republicans up was that the Obama administration arrested several gun runners, tried and convicted them. The NRA is a powerful organization that owns the GOP just like the other corporate entities that the GOP kowtows with slobbering worship of.
My husband is currently on a police force and retired from the military as an infantryman after 21 years. He has lost all respect he had for the GOP of today and he no longer wants anything to do with the NRA. Some of us realize the corruption and evil that the GOP now belongs to. They have complete indifference for the people in America harmed by the policies of the Bush administration. Romney is all for shipping jobs overseas and has done so for years. We were in a dire situation after eight years of republicans war mongering and policies for greed and corruption. President Obama and Democrats began working to help the country while the GOP obstructed ruthlessly. They opposed in a very treasonous way every solution and policy for improvement of the economy. They stood against all job creation. The NRA plays the GOP and all republicans for patsies. They have an agenda against the government just like so many republicans like Grover Norquist.
Thinking long term, is correct, the NRA us just going to publish the congressional votes, yay or nay. They are not holding anyone hostage.
vicki The NRA stands for Gun ownership rights, (it is protected in the Constitution) I am glad they are there, and I wish we had more groups like them to protect the other rights we have under the Constitution. The Democrats just want to take away the Constitutional rights the Constitution gave use as citizens, so it can make the government larger to have greater contol over us. What policys did Bush create that harmed US citizens????? The Democrat majority in congress passed banking bills in 07 that casused the housing bubble, by forcing the banks to make bad loans to people who could not afford to make the house payments. Then in 09 and 10, they have a super majorty in both houses and the presidency, so that they could pass any laws they wanted even if every Republican voted against them. They Spent more then a year just to get Obamacare. They could have raised taxes, passed imagration policys, killed oil or anything they could dream up. They instead spent Trillions of dollars on companies that went out of business, or unions to keep their votes. No real jobs bills got passed. So in the end of 2010 the people woke up and voted in Republicans in the House to help put a stop to the waisted spending. The Republicans want smaller Government not larger, they want people to have the right to start businesses and not be regulated to death. Romney is not for shipping jobs overseas like Obama is. The only oversease jobs that Romney has delt with is when Bane took over companies that had some overseas operations like overseas phone help centers. Unlike Obama who wants more taxes and regulations, that force companies overseas, so that they can survive. We have the Worlds Highest Corperation Taxes. What reason do they have to stay here??? it is not paying the worlds highest wages, dealing with the worlds most regulated laws. Not to mention frivious lawsuits, and too many other items to mention. As for Corruption, look at the crimes Bonnie Frank did, Capone was in prision for the same offence, but he just got a slap on the wrists (lightly). All the Obama cabinet officals that didn't pay thier taxes, but when offered jobs, finally paid them. Fast and Furious, a couple of minor officials that reported the problems got fired, but the officials running the show, got nothing. So don't talk about the Republican Corruption, as any who did anything wrong are no longer in government, unlike every Democrat that did. That is my main reason for voting Republican. They commit a crime, they do the time. Unlike the Democrats that seem to get promoted for doing the crime. As for Greed and Corrupton. Republicans give more to Charities, then Democrats, and how is he helping. He and the Democrats have blocked just about every jobs bill the House has sent the Senate (23 are still sitting there after more then a year), he blocks any jobs that have to do with Oil, Coal, and Natural Gas, but gives Billions to Soylindra, and dozens of companies that file for bankruptcy within weeks of getting the government money. Because of the bad home loans that Freddy and Fanny made the banks had to be bailed out, because the the backing of the loans by the Federal Government. Then we had to bail out GM which costed the taxpayers Billions. Your argument just doen't hold water. If spending Trillions worked we would have 0 unemployment now. It would have been better if he gave every Taxpayer $100K and probably would have cost less. All we have to show for it is a larger national Debt.
There is no difference. The NRA and other special interest groups i.e. Grover Norquist and others like them are nothing but bullies! And you wonder why your youth is acting the way they do? Open your eyes!
So just the people that you disagree with are bullies the others are just shedding some light on the subject?
My youth are productive members of society as are the youth of the people that I know.
As a 20 year veteran of a major metropolitian police force my eyes are and have been for decades Wide Open.
Obviously you haven't been watching the news. What about the lady on the school bus that was hounded by some of your sweet children. Where did those kids learn to behave the way they did?
Grover, Koch Brothers, blah blah blah. Do you also put Ed Schultz in your mouth?
AND - why did there even need to be an extra monitor on the school bus? There is an extra cost to that - just in case you are trying to balance a budget.
Just asking.
Please become what your name says---an observer. You don't live here so you really have no dog in this fight.
Grover Norquist is against raising taxes on anyone. In light of how exactly the federal government wastes our money in many instances, I and many other ACTUAL taxpayers believe it is ridiculous to give even more of our money to them to waste. Anything WRONG with that???
Commieslayer - I don't need Ed whatever his name is to figure out what is wrong with your country. I do have family in the US - so I do have a dog in the fight. It would be fine to cut taxes if they didn't also reward the 1% every time they do.
Obviously you haven't been watching the news. What about the lady on the school bus that was hounded by some of your sweet children. Where did those kids learn to behave the way they did?
One thing I learned early on about a childs behavior is if you have a problem with the child you are 99% of the time going to have a problem with the parent.
As soon as one of those little snot noses said something out of line they should have been marched straight to the principals office and had their parents notified.
The permissive society that we are having to endure now is the cause no one is held responsible for their actions it's never their fault.
Absolutely right! However, when those same sweeties see the way some adults behave, they are led to believe that bullying is quite alright. Even the greatest kids can behave like brats when they are out of a parent's sight. Don't tell me that your kids are perfect. If you truly believe that I have some land in Florida I'd like to sell you.
You know, there are actually parents that believe their kids can do no wrong. Really.
Yes, and they are almost always liberals.
Great White North
The youth act the way they do, because people like you don't battle their a$$ when they need it. I was brought up in a conservative family, where everyone served, and discipline was the rule. You sure as hell wouldn't have seen any one of us 5 boys disrespecting our elders-that was an a$$ whooping for sure.
My kids are men now and productive members of society. I did paddle their backsides (and they will back me up on this) when they dared to be disrespectful - but that was a good 20 or more years ago. They now thank me for that discipline. Times have changed - and the kids of today are different.
BTW - I am a conservative in my country. You see, liberalism/conservatism is a sliding scale. The current state of conservatism in the US is very extreme and it would be right off the chart here.
You have to admit that the general attitudes of disrespect that children see in congress may have an impact on their behaviour as well.
For those of you who can't (or won't) read the schoolbus monitor was a volunteer
Great White
YOUR country? Just what country is that, and what does it have to do with politics in the U.S.???
Thanks to the internet, Peanut Galleries are now global.
Those kids were brats, because their parients failed to teach them respect for others. But not all kids are like that. Some were brought up right, and can be totally trusted. (not all the kids on the bus acted that way). I know of kids that act better them most adults I know. It takes a special parient to teach a child how to conduct themselves, despite what they see the Government officals doing, and other people around them. Maybe it has someting to do with the lack of morial values being taught. Because if you don't fill a void with proper teaching, then it will be filled with improper ones.
Amazingly the program under GW Bush keeps getting brought up in this. That one was with the understanding and complete knowledge of the Mexican Govt. It was stopped before this program was started (Fast and Furious)
Stop being partisan on this, a federal agent was killed, the parents have been looking for the simple answer for 15 months "who was in charge of this debacle"
Over 200 Mexican Nationals are dead using weapons supplied by our Goverment without our friends in the Mexican Govt even knowing it was going on. This all happened under Holder's watch. He should be held accountable, he should have to answer questions, if he was innept then throw him out. Who ever was in charge should be fired. What ever happened to accountability??? "The Buck Stops Here"
Obama... accountable?? Now THAT's funny.... all he does is blame somebody else for his incompetence... must be humiliating for Liberals to have an Underdog parade float for a party "leader"....
Why is it "partisan" to insist that ALL such programs see the same investigative fervor? In fact that is the OPPOSITE of "partisan"...then again Conservative is the opposite of truthful.
There were several people, including the agent in charge and the US Attorney that were overseeing this farce fired.
As for all the people killed, do you really believe for one minute that they wouldn't have died if F&F hadn't happened? Do you really think the cartels wouldn't have bought the guns somewhere else?
As for "our friends" in the Mexican government. A huge percentage of Mexican government officals are corrupt, and another huge section of them are more scared of the cartels than they are of us. Is it not possible that they were left out of the loop because they couldn't be trusted?
Obviously, this operation never should have been undertaken, but this whole congressional investigation is nothing more than an election year witch hunt.
Holders job was to inforce the law, instead he is doing everything in his power to cover up the crimes commited. If Obama is elected again he after 7 years will still bame Bush, and everyone else. The man is no Harry Truman. I just get tired of all the Democrat lies, they said more open, well it has been more like closed behind prison walls. As mike from AZ said the mexican officals tend to be corrept, so why would they think it was a good idea to send guns overthere in the first place. It is like sending guns to gang members. I just hope enought of the democrats can vote truefully to hold Holder in comtempt. It is the the Democrat way, but it is the Right, Moral, and just thing to do. I get tired of democrats breaking the law, while common citizens get sent to prison for much lesser crimes.
So has anything useful ever come out of a vote like this in congress? I think we all know the answer. Drama at its finest. Better than the West Room. (or restroom)
Well, yeah, Nixon resigned instead of being impeached.... Bet you Liberals wish you had a Barry vs Hillary 08 do-over....
No, actually, we're quite content to ride another four years with Obama. Hillary can get her eight in starting in 2016. But it's really nice of you to worry about us.
She wouldn't have a country to run, unless she is hired by China to run the USA. Some times I wish we had a Conserveative, and a Liberal USA so each could live as they want. Of course I think most would reside in the Consertive, USA , to pay lower taxes, and work in the Liberal USA to collect Unemployment.
Executive Privilege. Obama thinks it is a privilege to lie to the American people. Brian Terry is dead, and not a word from Obama. But, he did call some Fluke to settle her nerves about her whoring behavior. OBAMA IS GONE!
George W. used Executive Privilege 6 times. One of those for the Pat Tilman friendly fire death....guess those GOP presidents like to lie even more.
You all sound like children defending this because "Bush was a bad guy, Bush did this, or Bush did that"
This isn't about politics, for me it is about finding the truth, people died because the Government screwed up! Someone should be held responsible, someone should have their butts in a sling!
Didn't your mommies ever tell you things like "two wrongs do not make a right" or " if your friend jumped off a cliff does that mean you have to?"
Grow Up! Shame on you for defending anyone involved in this crime for political reason!
Dblackman
If you have a serious interest in the facts, read the current Fortune Article. Sure, the details are almost tedious compared to the twits you get here, but the truth is so far from the Issa histrionics they could be different worlds.
The bottom line is the the Arizona politicians and the NRA did not want the ATF to interrupt a nice little business the gun shops had selling assault rifles in bulk to straw buyers. Except for a specific instance, the ATF officers could only watch the straw buyers but legally they could not touch them.
It was the Gun shops that reported the problems with ATF telling them to sell the guns. If it weren't for the gun shops the Fast and Furious thing would never have seen the light. It was the Feds that screwed up big time, then they tried to blame the dealers. Obama is hiding something so he claimed Excutive Privilige to cover up the facts. I just hope the Democrats can get past their party loyality and cast the morial and correct vote on Holder.
Key word here folks is NBC poll. So we already know NBC does everything they
can to protect this American hating, Women Hating racist Obama. Obama is
trailing in every poll across the country. Liberals are dreaming again.. NBC
doesn't even have any creditability to run a poll. If they can doctor video's
just imagine what they are doing with the poll. This is to good..The Obama
downfall is it full swing. We only have to Nov. and bye, bye Obama.
haha, you all getting all frothy over what you think you know, which is pretty much squat..yes i USE several different guns, small calibes for plinking( they're cheap, thats why), and small game, larger calibers for big game, a SCARY (to the ignorant) SKS for target shooting, a pair of different gauge shotguns depending on what im chasing...so yes, i can and do use 14 different guns...concrete dwellers are CLUE-LESS..you hear "14 guns" and assume its some kind of arsenal being stockpiled for armegedon..
The funny thing about gun owners is that they already have lets just say several guns and nobody stopped them from getting them so whats the problem? I say that i'm going to be keeping tabs on the contempt vote and those dems that defect i'm going to do every thing in my power to see that they lose their next election, starting with a primary. they are gutless and turn coats.
Oooohhhh, sure hope you are very busy with that!!!
If they don't vote in favor of the US Constitution they should be impeached.
Holder should be held in contempt..its obvious hes hiding something or his boss "Affirmative action Sotoro" wouldn't have illegally used executive privilege, which DOES NOT APPLY TO HOLDER..UNLESS BARRY was in it up to his EYEBALLS....
What do the papers that Issa wants prove does he know or does he just want them to see whats on them. At any rate inocent untill proven guilty, and the 5th amendment says that a person doesn't have to participate in his own witch hunt.
and all the witches agree with you.
since when does obama follow the constituion?
If called to testify to congress, you have too. Pleading the 5th is an option, but congress can still hit you with contempt.
Feisty the idiot. Making comments on guns...LOL. I have 36...choke on that libby bit*h.
I really don't care how many guns anyone owns. But can you grant me that I might see things a little clearer than some of you that are in the thick of this?
I never mentioned Dubya - in fact he and other Bush's are remarkably refreshing after seeing some others currently on the right. As for executive privilege - I think possibly that has been used by all parties when they are in power. Please correct me if I'm wrong on this (as I'm sure you will).
