Romney says he wished court gave states 'latitude' on immigration

SCOTTSDALE, AZ -- Mitt Romney pledged to reform the nation's immigration laws in his first year as president while criticizing the Supreme Court's immigration decision on Monday in broad terms.

Romney told donors in Arizona that he would have preferred that their state have more discretion in enforcing its immigration laws following a ruling by the high court throwing out much of Arizona's tough immigration law.

"Now you probably heard today there was a Supreme Court decision relating to immigration and given the failure of the immigration policy in this country, I would have preferred to see the Supreme Court give more latitude to the states not less," Romney told some 200 donors seated in a hotel ballroom for his remarks. "And there are states now under this decision have less authority, less latitude to enforce immigration laws."

Throughout the primary campaign, Romney defended the immigration law here, which called for local law enforcement to check immigration documents for anyone who they suspected may be in the country illegally (among other provisions), as the right course for a state to take when the federal government has failed to address immigration.

The court invalidated much of the law except for one of its most controversial prongs: the requirement that authorities check the immigration status of individuals whom they detain and suspect of being in the U.S. illegally.

Romney didn't address that provision directly, pivoting instead to accuse President Obama of a failure to lead on immigration and creating a "muddle" of the issue.

"The president promised in his campaign that in his first year he would take on immigration and solve our immigration challenges, put in place a long term program to care for those who want to come here legally to deal with illegal immigration, to deal with securing our borders," Romney said. "All these things he was going to in his first year he had a Democrat House and a Democrat Senate but he didn’t do it. Isn’t it time for the American people to ask him why?"

Romney has not remarked publicly on the Supreme Court case or immigration today, but in addressing the topic of reform with a group of donors here who collectively gave more than $2 million dollars to the campaign, Romney pledge to forgo stopgap measures and reform the U.S. immigration system within the first year of his administration.

"In my first year I will make sure we actually do take on immigration, we secure our border, we make sure that we grow legal immigration in a way that provides people here with skill and expertise that we want," Romney said. "This is an issue that has to be tackled."

Didn't Obama promise to take on immigration and make it a top priority once elected?

And now it is an election year and here we go again. Promise, and words. That is all Obama is .....words!

You righties aren't the only one's that can copy and paste previous posts (that would be called alliteration). This is how I answered you the last time: Well the Republicans won't pass anything unless they can make poor people or your grandmother pay for it, so if anything is going to get done, executive order baby! paste previous posts.... GOTTA LOVE IT!

It really wasn't obama, it was the ones that put the words on the teleprompter. Obama just reads them... you really didn't expect him to follow through did you?

Commiting to memory a half-hour speech would be a waste of time. Obama's too busy going after terrorists.

In the past, speeches were read from paper notes and no one had a problem with that. However, a few years ago some memo went out to the righties to criticize Obama for using technology and now years later, they're still obsessing about it. Let's watch the Republican convention, or at least try to, and count the number of speakers reading from teleprompters. If GWB speaks, he won't need one, as it wouldn't do any good anyway. He'll still get the words wrong and try to cover it up with marginally funny jokes.

States have no rights when it comes to immigration. They may only assist in enforcing the federal laws on the books.

This is why the lone provision was left alone. I agree with the law that anyone should be able to prove your legal status. Remember, people illegally come here from Asia, Europe, and Africa as well. Not just Mexico. If a person cannot produce some sort of identification within 24-48 hours, then there is a problem. With that said however, I do think there will be local politicians and cops (Sheriff Arpaio specifically) who will use this as an excuse to do racial profiling and harassment. Unfortunately, I have no suggestion to get around that. Though I truly wish I did.

If people are still having trouble with this (this goes out to Govs. Brewer and Romney), let me attempt to put this simply. When person immigrates (legally or illegally) they don't immigrate to Arizona, or Ohio, or Alabama, etc., they immigrate to the United States. Who enters this country is a matter for the feds...not the states.

Do not even attempt to say its the liberal's fault. BOTH parties have failed. It's time all accept that. Whether it's for trying to win votes or because someone wants cheap labor to landscape their mansions and babysit their silver-spooned brats..both parties have botched this.

Well, Obama took a lot of grief from the media for criticizing SCOTUS over Citizens United. Hope people are equally critical of a candidate for President who doesn't like SCOTUS decisions. Especially when there are 5 justices on the court who conservatives can usually count on.

Romney has a law degree and the Constitution clearly provides that immigration is a federal matter because the Founding Fathers were cognizant that individual State laws on this subject simply would not work. It is true that the Federal government has not adequately addressed this matter; however, that in and of itself doesn't constitute a waiver to the States. Comprehensive immigration reform will require the Republican Party to accept the fact that many immigrants tend to vote Democratic and that the white majority is rapidly fading away. With their professed emphasis on family values the religious right and Catholic Church should be acceptable to Latinos but the bottom line perhaps is that it is the economic status of the immigrants and the realization that the Republican Party is not labor friendly becomes the deciding factor.

Perhaps, in Wilbur's attempt to pander to every bigoted, frightened white folk in Amerika, he'll support a State's latitude in enforcing citizenship, search and seizure, property and voting rights laws, as well.

          What a clueless turd.

States should now use their taxing power to manage immigration. Non-US citizens should pay 110% of their wages to the state unless they have a work permit. The penalty for not paying the tax should be 100 years in a state prison.

If the founding fathers wanted states to have wide latitude in their decisions we would still have the Articles of Confederation. Instead, after considerable debate, we have our US Constitution that puts decisions like immigration in the hands of the federal government and not in the states. Of course, both candidates are masters at pandering to their audience, so they'll say anything to get (re)elected irrespective of what our Constitution says. Nothing to see here...move along.

Of course Romney wants the States to deal with this. 50 different, ugly, racist policies would suit him just fine . Then, he would not have to deal with it. He does not have original thoughts or ideas or plans. The Neo Cons and the Tea Party and the Mormons are running his show. Pay attention because what he is saying now is only a preview of how bad it will get. He will NOT be the Decider in-Chief. Everyday, he shows us how obvious that is.

This man doesn't think and speak like a President; he thinks and speaks like a candidate. A President would agree that there needs to be one policy for the nation. A candidate tells each area what they want to hear. If he doesn't act like a President, why should we vote for him to be President?
