Romney still doesn't answer if he'd overturn Obama's immigration action

In remarks he delivered in Florida before Latino political leaders, presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney once again declined to answer if he would overturn President Obama's executive action to no longer deport qualified young illegal immigrants.

Instead, Romney explained that he would work to craft a long-term solution dealing with illegal immigration.

"Some people have asked if I will let stand the president's executive action," Romney said at the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials' conference. "The answer is that I will put in place my own long-term solution that will replace and supersede the president's temporary measure."

Left unsaid, of course, is what Romney -- if elected president -- would do before signing long-term legislation into law, or if the legislation couldn't be passed. Remember: Due to congressional opposition, both George W. Bush and Barack Obama have been unable to pass comprehensive legislation dealing with illegal immigration.

Today wasn't the first time Romney has declined to say if he would overturn Obama's policy to no longer deport young illegal immigrants who have graduated from high school, who are serving in the military, and who have a clean criminal record.

Mitt Romney criticized the action after the president announced it last Friday. The reason: because it is temporary.

“I think the action that the president took today makes it more difficult to reach that long-term solution, because an executive order is, of course, just a short-term matter.”

He added that Obama's executive action can be “reversed by subsequent presidents.”

But that begged the question: Would a President Romney reverse it?

It was exactly the question CBS' Bob Schieffer asked him last weekend.

BOB SCHIEFFER: Sure, but would you repeal this?

MITT ROMNEY: Well, it would be overtaken by events, if you will, by virtue of my putting in place a long-term solution with-- with legislation which creates law that relates to these individuals, such that they know what their-- their stat-- setting is going to be

BOB SCHIEFFER: I-- I won't keep on about this but just to-- to make sure I understand, would you leave this in place while you worked out a long-term solution or would you just repeal it?

MITT ROMNEY: We'll-- we'll look at that-- we'll look at that setting as we-- as we reach that. But my anticipation is, I'd come into office and say we need to get this done on a long-term basis, not this kind of a stopgap measure. What-- what the president did, he-- he should have worked on this years ago. If he felt seriously about this, he should have taken action when he had a Democrat House and Senate, but he didn't. He saves these sort of things until four and a half months before the general election.

The Obama campaign issued this response to Romney's speech: “Today, Mitt Romney told the largest national gathering of Hispanic elected officials: ‘When I make a promise to you - I will keep it.’ But in front of an audience of Republican primary voters, he called the DREAM Act a ‘handout’ and promised to veto it. Now, after seven days of refusing to say whether or not he’d repeal the Obama administration’s immigration action that prevents young people who were brought here through no fault of their own as children from being deported, we should take him at his word that he will veto the DREAM Act as president.”

Uh Oh!

From The Hollwood Reporter:

"We need you to panic NOW!" wrote Cookie Parker of the Obama campaign in an e-mail that hit showbiz inboxes in early June, urging recipients to commit to giving or raising "$1,000 each month until the election." The increased urgency -- with an event slated for June 20 at actress Donna Mills' L.A. house touting Sharon Stone as a special guest -- also has left some with a bad taste.

"After he took office, he ignored everyone here," gripes one L.A. donor, "and now we feel like we're being used."

If Obama loses the Celebs, what will he do????

WCA -

I'll see your Hollywood Reporter and raise you a Variety:

"This evening, other Hollywood figures were to gather at the home of Donna Mills for another fund-raising effort, what is billed as the Los Angeles Obama Leadership Circle. Scheduled to be a special guest was Sharon Stone, with members paying $5,000 per person. Monique Brown, Eriq Paquette and Cate Park are
founding members, and Joyce Rey and Dixon Slingerland are co-chairs......

In May, Kirk Douglas, Scarlett Johansson, Meryl Streep and Steven Spielberg were among those who gave high dollar contributions to Obama.

Others who gave during the month:

Stars: Will.i.am, Tom Hanks, Salma Hayek, Kate Capshaw, Billy Crystal, Jamie Lee Curtis, Robert Downey Jr., Vivica Fox, Marsha Mason, Eddie Murphy, Yeardley Smith, Barbra Streisand, Rita Wilson, Reese Witherspoon, Jack Black.

Writers-Producers-Directors: J.J. Abrams, David Kohan, Salim Akil, John August, Paris Barclay, Dustin Lance Black, Susannah Grant, Nina Jacobson, Kathleen Kennedy, Phil Rosenthal, Rod Lurie, Frank Marshall, Katie McGrath, Max Mutchnick, Marti Noxon, Todd Phillips, Andrew Solt.

Media and Studio Executives: Doug Belgrad, Robert Friedman, Jeffrey Katzenberg, Ted Sarandos, Thomas Schumacher, Jeff Shell, Andy Cohen, Barry Diller, Michael Fricklas, Debra Lee, Michael Rapino, Kevin Tsujihara, Dana Walden,

Agents, Managers and Attorneys: Keith Addis, Alan Hergott, Kevin Huvane, Matthew Kline, Jeremy Zimmer, Bryan Lourd, Gerald Breslauer.

Other Notables: Clarence Avant, Burt Bacharach, James Gleick, Al Gore, Kelly Meyer, Pat Mitchell, Tomi Morrison.

On the Republican side, Romney held a fundraiser in late May at the Beverly Hills Hotel, with Tom Dreeson, Jon Voight and Scott Baio among the show biz figures present. And while there has been talk of Romney doing a show biz centric event, none is scheduled."

Whew....at least Scott Baio's on board for Romney. I mean talk about panic and all.....

Gaming magnate Sheldon Adelson already has given $20 million to GOP campaign coffers and says he's willing to pour as much as $100 million into this election.'

I just can't wait for somebody to explain how taking five grand each from Kirk Douglas and Meryl Streep even remotely compares to taking $100 million from Sheldon Adelson. I won't even ask about the brothers Koch.....

Do you mean how the Pubes bitched and moaned for 12 years about welfare reform and never did a damn thing about it.

It finally took a Dem President, Clinton, to get the ball rolling and pass welfare reform.

Or, for the same amount of time, the Pubes bitching about the deficit, while raising it.

Again it was a Dem President who had to come in and balance it.

Now, the pubes are still babbling on with cheap talking points on immigration that they'll never do anything about. In fact it'll never happen for one reason: The big money likes cheap labor to set the standard for everybody else to live by....

Big diffrence. Bush did it to better the whole country or protect it.

"We haven't heard much from him. And I wouldn't necessarily say he's at the center of any command structure. And, again, I don't know where he is," Bush said during the 2002 news conference. "I'll repeat what I said. I truly am not that concerned about him. I know he is on the run.

or how about this:

(...)"Before taking the country to war, this [Bush] Administration owed it to the American people to give them a 100 percent accurate picture of the threat we faced. Unfortunately, our Committee has concluded that the Administration made significant claims that were not supported by the intelligence," Rockefeller said. "In making the case for war, the Administration repeatedly presented intelligence as fact when in reality it was unsubstantiated, contradicted, or even non-existent. As a result, the American people were led to believe that the threat from Iraq was much greater than actually existed." (...)

Until you come up with a better Republican candidate, you shouldn't criticize. First, we don't know anything about Romney because he refuses to talk. Second, the little that we know is that he was an awful governor, he took taxpayers' money to help out with the Olimpics and then padded himself on the back by saying: "see how well I did?", he was a CEO of a company that inflated debts of companies to make profit, and then let them file for bankruptcy (let the taxpayer pick up the tab AGAIN). Finally, he wants to be like GWB.

Even the conservatives are not fond of Romney. They accept him because they do not have a choice.

If he actually supported some path to citizenship he could simply say that. It would be more than he's currently saying.

His failure to take a solid stand on most issues should frighten people. If you elect someone without knowing what they stand for or what they plan to do you deserve what happens to you.

I understand that Bain had successes, that is not the point. The point is that part of Bain's decisions was to bleed companies so Romney does not to decide what to talk about. It's good and it's bad.

But Romney wants to talk about good only and pretend like bad didn't happen. And we are not talking about failed experiments that were based on good intentions. We are talking about deliberate, short-term decisions that were influenced by profit only.

He is a walking definition of a hypocrite. Anyone who dodges draft 4 times, and then criticizes the people for protesting the war is a low life.

America under a Romney presidency; scene, a White House news conference:

ANY REPORTER: Mr. President, the sea levels have risen by 8 inches in the last month worldwide. What can be done to stop the impending catastrophe?

MITT ROMNEY: We'll-- we'll look at that-- we'll look at that setting as we-- as we reach that...

ANOTHER REPORTER: Mr. President, how do you intend to handle the looming worldwide fiscal crisis now that Europe has collapsed?

MITT ROMNEY: We'll-- we'll look at that-- we'll look at that setting as we-- as we reach that...

ANOTHER REPORTER: Mr. President, the Russians are threatening a nuclear attack unless we help Iran develop its nuclear weapons!

MITT ROMNEY: We'll-- we'll look at that-- we'll look at that setting as we-- as we reach that...

FOREIGN CORRESPONDENT: Mr. President, Godzilla has risen from Tokyo Bay! AIEEEEEE!!!

MITT ROMNEY: We'll-- we'll look at that-- we'll look at that setting as we-- as we reach that...

On and on and on, ad infinitium, ad nauseam, as evidenced from Mr. Romney's many "position statements" thus far in this campaign cycle.

Obama is responsible for the free-flow of semi-automatic weapons into Mexico that murdered hundreds & hundreds of Latinos, and our own federal Border patrol agent.

He ordered it done; it’s no different than if he had pulled the trigger himself.

Explain how Latinos can support this? Explain how this benefits Latinos?

How in the Wide, Wide World of Sports do you connect your thoughts re Moody's action in re President Obama to anything, let alone this current story on the vine?

All you corporate right wing puppets must think the American people are really stupid. The only thing they have been honest about is when they stated their first priority is to make Obama a one term president. Everything else has been lies and Romney changes his opinion more than he changes his underwear. Romney and all the other corporate puppets have said that Obama hasn't done anything to help the Latino's. Well, I know you right wing nuts have selective memory lose but the fact is when the Democrats had the majority in both houses the Dream act did pass but in the senate a 55 majority wasn't enough because the Corporate Republicans filibustered the bill so the fact is the Corporate puppets prevented the Dream act from being enacted, just as they have done for every bill that would help our economy and create jobs. Also the corporate created an environment which caused our countries credit down grade. So now we have another right wing conspiracy that Obama allowed fast and furious so Obama could take away our guns. Anyone who believes that needs to seek medical help because apparently you are not capable of accepting the truth and are willing to sell our country to the highest bidder which is against our constitution which you all profess to honor. You really are puppets if you listen to FOX, I watch it occasionally to make sure the crazies are still there. I could go on because I know those corporate puppets have their own agenda and that is to destroy our working class, take rights away from women, cut everything for those in need, ( vets, disabled, kids, police, fire, teachers etc. But Romney and his cronies of the Corporate GOP want to give themselves more in tax cuts. I can only hope that those on the right who have a back bone will truly see their party as our nations destroyer from within. Working class Republicans really need to research for the truth what their party are telling them because if the corporate puppets get in then we will have to take to the streets to get our country and democracy back. Think for the party who supports fairness for all and a democracy that shouldn't be allowed to be bought.

      TJM07

Now Tjm07,whatever you do, don't try to use logic or reason with Our poor delusional Leftist Comrades, it will just make Their heads hurt and kick off another bout of Tourettes Syndrome. I mean if logic or reason worked all You would have to do is point out the realities, that telling Young Mexicans They can stay, .....for a while,........until after the election, ........maybe, means nothing, there is no rule of law to back that up,and an executive order can be cancelled at any time, and if You look at actual actions, the Man has deported more Hispanics than any other President and His "Justice" Department has actually smuggled thousands of Weapons into Mexico giving them to drug gangs, that They have used to kill hundreds of Their People and those weapons are still there,Yes,actions speak louder than words, but they continue to fall on deaf "ears", like telling Gays, he now, before the election anyway, believes in Gay marriage, another empty lie which the desperate hear as a promise, just like before the last election when he promised desperate Americans that Unemployment would never go above 8% and it has never been below 8, or that he would cut the deficit in half, and has actually added more to it than all previous Presidents combined, but what really bothers me the most, is when he was caught on an open mike with the Russians scheming about what he was going to do after his re-election when he would have more "flexibility" to do what he wants, was He lying to the Russians or has He been lying to Us? But don't try to point these things out to those poor sick pups, because You would obviously be Lying!

Some Real Facts About Mitt Romney We Won't Hear From The Lame Stream Media
        About The 'Real' Mitt Romney!

After going to both Harvard Business School and Harvard Law School simultaneously, he passed the Michigan bar, but never worked as an attorney.

As a venture-capitalist, Romney's first major business deal involved investing in a start-up office supply company with one store in Massachusetts that sold office supplies. That company, called
'Staples', now has over 2,000 stores and employs over
        90,000 people.

Romney or his company Bain Capital (using what became known as the "Bain Way") would go on to perform the same kinds of business miracles again and again, with companies like Domino's, Sealy, Brookstone, Weather Channel, Burger King, Warner Music Group,Dollarama, Home Depot Supply, and many others.

Got your calculators handy? Let's recap...

Volunteer campaign worker for his fathers gubernatorial campaign for 1 year.

Unpaid intern in Governor's office for 8 years.

Mormon missionary in Paris for 2 years.

Unpaid Bishop & state President for his church for 10 years.

No salary as President of the Olympics for 3 years.

No salary as MA Governor for 4 years.

That's a grand total of 28 years of unpaid service to his country, his community and his church.

        Why?

Because that's the kind of man Mitt Romney is!

And, in 2011 Mitt Romney gave over $4 million to charity.
Almost 19% of his years income.

        Obama gave 1% !!
And, Joe Biden gave $300 or .0013% !!!

        May 20, 2009

WASHINGTON — The Senate voted 90-6 Wednesday to strip money from emergency-spending legislation to close the Guantanamo Bay detainee facility, a clear concession by Democrats that they lacked the political muscle to shutter the prison.

later in the article from McClatchy Mr. Obama's fellow Hawaiian had this to say:

Wednesday's decision to cut the funds "is not a referendum on closing Guantanamo," said Senate Appropriations Committee Chairman Daniel Inouye, D-Hawaii. "Instead, it should serve as a reality check, since at this time the administration has not yet forwarded a coherent plan for closing this prison."

Mitt the Barber brings to mind the kid who murdered his parents and begged for leniency on the grounds that he was an orphan. Now he wants to blame Obama for not enacting the Dream Act that the Teapublicans filibustered to death!

The Teapublicans were enthusiastic about a 2,000 mile 20 foot high electrified fence during the primaries. They crucified anyone (like Cowboy Ricky) who even hinted reaching accommodation with the undocumented community. Now he wants the Hispanic community to believe he can convince the Teapublicans to accept his 180 degree flip to force the Dream Act thru Congress and sign it.

Does he really believe the Hispanic Community is so stupid and naive?

Instead, Romney explained that he would work to craft a long-term solution dealing with illegal immigration.

Uh Oh, What is a "long term solution?" That wouldn't be the "Final Solution," would it?

Amy--the man's been running for President since before 2008. How much more time does he need to come up with a short-term or long-term solution? All of his advisors from the Bush administration have been out of office since 2008--they could have been working on it for him. (notice he never says what he would do; only ever refers to what his people will do---the MBA style of leadership that worked so well with George Bush).

Romney said he favored awarding permanent residency to foreign students who obtain advanced degrees in math, science or engineering at U.S. universities, saying they should have green cards stapled to their diplomas. Plus anyone who serves in the military should also be granted legal status.

Romney knows his billionaire backers loves illiegal labor, just like all big corporation. These people only say bad things about illegals to appease the red-neck bigots of the party. They know that no one would do the work for that pay unless they brought back slavery! The Marriots are a big lover of illegal labor.

I caught the Presidents speech with a group of students who are facing the rising interest rates as of July 1, if Congress doesn't do something to pass the measure to stop the rising rates.

In listening, I realized again just how important it is to vote out as many Republican as possible in the November election.

I also realized that anyone who votes for Romney is a darn fool. Come on compare the two. The President is a winner, and Romney is a loser.

Job1 -- This is worth considering:

How it got to this point: Subsidized student loan interest rates used to be 6.8%. But when Democrats took over the House in 2007, they passed phased-in cheaper rates for subsidized student loans. The rates fell to the current low of 3.4% for subsidized Stafford loans this past school year. The rates are scheduled to revert back to 6.8% for the 2012-2013 school year.

And with unemployment just below 24% for teenagers and 14% for those ages 20 to 24, more young people are going back to school or staying in school, according to recent data by Equifax.

And while Mr. Obama sees this as a very important thing now he could not be bothered about it in 2007 when he was the Junior Senator from Illinois:

Obama twice skipped the Senate vote on the College Cost Reduction and Access Act when the bill came to the Senate floor first in July and again in September of 2007, according to public records.

By the way. When President Obama was in the Senate the student loan measure was in the bag as far as passing.

            By BYRON TAU |

            4/23/12 6:38 PM EDT

In 2007, then-Illinois Sen. Barack Obama missed two votes on the student loan interest bill that he now wants Congress to extend.

Obama twice skipped the Senate vote on the College Cost Reduction and Access Act when the bill came to the Senate floor first in July and again in September of 2007, according to public records.

The bill, introduced by Rep. George Miller (D-Calif.) and signed into law by President George W. Bush, first cleared the Senate in July on a 78 to 18 vote, with Obama as one of only four senators who didn't cast a ballot. Obama did not cast a vote again in September, after the House and Senate had ironed out different versions of the bill. He was on the conference committee assigned to merge the House and Senate versions of the bill.

He issued a statement when the bill was signed by President Bush, saying, "by investing in education we are restoring America's competitiveness in the world, and today is an important step forward."

Obama has made keeping student loan interest rates low a new priority for his administration — but as a senator, he neither voted for Miller's bill nor signed on as a cosponsor.

(Also on POLITICO: Obama starts student loan campaign)

A White House official on Monday insisted he was deeply involved in the legislation, voting on amendments and sitting on the conference committee. The White House also pointed out his vote was not needed for passage.

“President Obama was directly involved in crafting this legislation to provide American families a fair shot at an affordable college education when it first passed in 2007, and now he’s calling on Congress to prevent interest rates from doubling on July 1 for more than 7.4 million students who will rack up, on average, an additional $1,000 unless Congress acts,” White House spokesman Matt Lehrich said.

"The facts are very, very simple. This passed in 2007 with broad bipartisan support. It was signed by a Republican president," Secretary of Education Arne Duncan told reporters last week.

Obama is set to depart Tuesday on a three-state swing to put pressure on Congress to extend the 2007 law that lowered interest rates on Federal Family Education Loan and Direct Loan programs from 6.8 percent to 3.4 percent. Those lower rates are set to expire in July — an outcome that the Obama administration estimated will cost the average loan holder more than $1,000 extra dollars if loan rates double — and will affect up to 7 million families.

Obama was embroiled in a tough primary campaign in 2007 and was on the road for big chunks of time. His missed vote rate in the Senate soared to over 80 percent towards the end of the campaign.

            With Donovan Slack.

CORRECTION: An early version of this post said that Obama abstained from the vote. He did not abstain, he missed the vote.

This will be a tight one, and my current Projection: (Currently the states that will play the biggest in November are Michigan, Ohio, Virginia and Wisconsin. However, if the election were held today, Obama would win Michigan, Ohio, Virginia and Wisconsin. Also for now, I'm placing Florida in the Obama column.

The key months for this race are going to be September and October. And as far as the debates, Romney may have a problem in this area.

For now, the new totals are:

            Projected Winner Obama 317

            Projected Loser Romney 221

Hopefully the SCOTUS will take care of that fiasco in the next day or so and we cann begin doing real health care reform - which has to start with tort reform. Dems refused the GOP effort to do so last time because they are owned by the American Bar Association.

Open parenthesis means to be added right, turned back toward the equal sign makes it closed right?

MSNBC has no clue. Obama didn't issue any such executive order! He simply said that he would tell his people to not enforce the law! So the question to Romney should be - will you choose to violate your oath to abide by the constitution and the laws of the land or will you follow King Obama and choose which laws to enforce and which to ignore?

"MSNBC has no clue. Obama didn't issue any such executive order!"

That's funny.....even FOX News seems to think he did:

"The executive order will apply to illegal immigrants who came to the U.S. before they were 16 and are younger than 30. They also must have no major criminal offenses, have been in the country for at least five continuous years, have graduated from a U.S. high school or have earned a GED, or served in the military."

            http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2012/06/15/obama-administration-to-offer-immunity-to-younger-immigrants/

P.S. - They also referred to him as "President Obama", not "King Obama". You're not questioning Fox News as a fair and unbalanced source, now are you?

Actually, the President is allowed to decide how to enforce the law. Since enforcement powers and people are limited, every President uses prosecutorial discretion to decide how best to use the limited resources available. Common sense dictates that you go after those with criminal records first, then the illegals who came to the U.S. as adults. Way down at the bottom are the young people who came here as children and have followed the laws.

George W. Bush did the same thing in 2007, using an executive order that allowed thousands of illegal Liberians to remain in the U.S. I don't remember anyone screaming and gnashing their teeth over it. In fact, every President since Reagan has used executive authority with respect to enforcing illegal immigration. Did Reagan "violate his oath" too?

How about we keep the qualified immigrant kids like the honor student in Texas and throw out the punk @$$ kids on that bus in NY? I would be happy to volunteer to hold the door open while those monsters were stripped of their undeserved citizenship (and given to kids who would reflect honor onto this country) and tossed out into the rest of the world.

Would somebody PLEASE tell Mitt what he's supposed to say about immigration reform? He doesn't seem to be able to formulate a cohesive answer on his own.

Romney did answer this already, had MSNBC not (deliberately) edited a video to make Romney look 'out of touch' like Obama is he may have provided that answser to them. But it's not like anyone is watching this network anyway...

Exactly. We're told time and time again on here that more people watch Fox News than all the other "lamestream media" stations combined.

So, uhh, what are you so worried about? And since it's not like anyone's reading this blog, either, why are you posting here?

              So, what was his answer?

And if you dislike MSNBC so much why are you on this site?

Bman -- answer the question, unless you're just another right-wing coward and liar. If you hate MSNBC so much, why are you here all the time???

Romney has already retreated from his "Self Deportation" stance of just a few moths ago. The guy has no beliefs at all. At least Obama took at stance - yes it was political - but it was still a stance - like it or not. I guess Romney's answer is still Self-Deportation.

Some stance... it expires next year.. Guess the liberla talk lines did not mention that obama only made this for one year. So for those too young to apply now... Addios!... After all, like he told Vladimir, this is his last election.

A man who wants to be leader of the free world won't share what he'll do in office with the voters. Call me crazy, but I think this shows Mitten's lack of respect for us and democracy. Yes, we only have a corporate and a corporate-lite party to choose from, but actions taken by an executive should be consented to by the People via an election. Mitt either doesn't get this or has disdain for this idea.

Mitt can't give an answer until his adviser gives him one. He has no idea what to do except run for President. He has been caught in so many outright lies, how can anyone believe what he says.

Romney's "handlers" will tell him that President Obama wants to take away our guns, our religion, allow abortion on demand no matter what, allow me to marry my dog and open the flood gates to any and all "illegals". The made up NON-issues Republicans harp on to stir up their exreme right wing base.
