Commerce Secretary John Bryson resigned from his position on Thursday in the wake of a health scare that prompted media scrutiny.
In a letter to department colleagues, Bryson said that he had informed President Barack Obama of his resignation, and said that Rebecca Blank, who's been serving as acting secretary since he began a medical leave of absence on June 11, would continue to serve in that role.
"The work that you do to help America's entrepreneurs and businesses build our economy and create jobs is more important now than ever and I have come to the conclusion that I need to step down to prevent distractions from this critical mission," Bryson said.
Federal officials say the 68-year-old secretary suffered several seizures while driving back home in California on the weekend of June 8-10. Those seizures reportedly contributed to two automobile accidents, and he allegedly fled the scene of one.
"I want to extend my deepest thanks and appreciation to John for his service over the past months, and wish him and his family the very best," the president said in a statement, in which he noted he accepted Bryson's resignation on Wednesday evening.
"As Secretary, John fought tirelessly for our nation’s businesses and workers, helping to bolster our exports and promote American manufacturing and products at home and abroad. John has proven himself an effective and distinguished leader throughout his career in both the public and private sectors, from his success in the business world to his work leading on issues in the renewable energy industry."
News of the accidents wasn't made known until the following Monday, and the president reportedly hadn't been briefed about the incidents for some time after they occurred.
Bryson took a leave of absence after the accidents; he first became commerce secretary in October of 2011.
Whether Obama will bother to nominate an immediate successor to Bryson is unclear. With the impending election season nearing, it would be tough to steer a nominee through a divided Senate, and a new secretary might be named pending the outcome of November's election.
Obama said we was confident in Blank to continue serving as acting secretary.

Hey Rob, I had a diabetic seizure in January 2010, and drove a lot farther than two miles before my car was finally damaged enough to stop moving. Broke my shoulder into seven pieces and I still didnt wake up on my own. Whether it's happened in your experience is irrelevant. It happens.

Maybe. But here's the deal, bobby. The insurers already spent that money. So to rebate it means that the rebates will come right out of their pockets, almost like a double hit. And if they try to raise their premiums to cover the rebates, I'm willing to bet thos evil "regulators" will be all over that, too.
Because that's what "regulators" do, bobby. Without them, do you really suppose your premiums would come down, anytime soon?
Ultimately, this will cause insurers to think twice about all those fancy bonuses and the unnecessary spending that they do on other things besides care.

Can Bryson sue the Obama administration for the stress caused by their incompetence? Surely, being the Commerce Secretary in an administration as anti-business as this one had to cause many sleepless nights, elevated blood pressure and mental anguish. There's nothing worse than being given a job to do then have your boss (Obama) tie your hands or worse yet kick you back down the hill you'd been trying to climb. Get well Mr Bryson. Certainly getting away from the frustration of being embedded in the failed Obama administration is the right choice and a step towards your recovery.
You are such a delight and open minded. You start the discussion with a negative political comment that relates zero to the actual story then you are surprised at the replies. I hope he is OK, but I would also like to know what caused the seizures that made him flee the scene of an accident. Perhaps he knew that “hanging around” would not be in his best interests and possibly detrimental to his health?!!
Unless the seizues were the result of strokes, that were brought on by high blood pressure/stress, then people's views of Obama vs the House on economic issues wouldn't really enter into this one. Though if they said heart attack, in the back of my mind, question wrt seeing financial numbers and getting stressed out, might have entered into it... People who have had heart attacks (my father had a triple bypass) had been instructed by the docs to avoid stress....
Oh, and CoRavens, it seems the nature of the beast to get all partisan these days. Here is another one that did not get the message. Nether of the two niminees that had a problem on their taxes were "dodgers" On both their applications the CPA who did their taxes took an exemption that the IRS determined was not applicable. The rule most cpa's use is if indoubt claim it and sometimes even if they check it is dissalowed. Contrary to what you posted one of the people you slighted here passed and is presently working an both of themhad already settled with the IRS before being nominated. Apoor excuse to point to when almost every nominee so far has been stalled as has all proposed ligilation. Being lected just to make a President a one termer and signing a no tax increse with a private citizen means they will not help this nation recover and lose the opportunity to unseat a politician. Shame on the Republicans we may have lost the opportuiy to have a meaningful recovery because of them.

They had their 8 years...Did they do anything about the growing medical bankruptcies caused by massive HMO fraud? He won't be charged with felony anything - he will most likely lose all driving privileges since he is a danger to himself and everyone else because of the seizures.

If Obama had honest, decent people to present to the Congress for a position in the government, then ALL politicians wouldn't have had a problem vetting these people. But, since Obama has CORRUPT, DISHONEST, COMMUNIST associations as friends, it definitely presented a major problem. This is why Obama hired these people under false pretences and behind the Congress backs.

Actually, in my personal experience, it's "if in doubt, figure out the correct answer and have a reasonable basis (supporting evidence) for making that call." There are times when a judgment call is needed when dealing with certain complex rules, but I really don't think their cases would have fit that bill.

I was recently in a meeting with a number of high level execs from throughout the corporate world....the consensus was is the economy is in a shambles and there is little faith this administration can fix it....they are cutting costs and holding off hiring until they see a brighter light at the end of the tunnel.... Now blame who you want, but we as a team (America) need to fix it....we need a change in Washington, from the White House on down....get rid of the old and in with the new...new ideas, fresh faces...not alot of hot air and wind...people who are not afraid of stepping on special interest toes to do what is right for the good of the country as a whole...get rid of lobbyists....hold all public officials to the laws they pass....and stop with the handouts...overseas and at home...be fiscally responsible with the taxpayers money....as Harry Truman said "the buck stops here".....there is too much blame on these sites when we all need to take a share of the blame....both parties put us in this mess, and it will take both parties to get us out.....and we need to vote responsibly to ensure the people who can fix it are in charge.....

Seeking Sanity thank you so much for trying to educate people about seizures and epilepsy. Although the disorder has been around since the beginning of time people for some reason feel that they can still do seizure jokes and discriminate against something that they know nothing about. After someone has a seizure it is very likely that they are in a postictal state and are not aware of what is happenning. Do you really think a man who is the Secretary of Commerce purposely was in two accidents and drove away knowingly?!! The answer is NO. Please for once stop blaming everything on whether or not someone is an R or a D. Sometimes it doesn't have anything to do with politics. Can we stop the hatred for one second and reflect on the cause. Although Supreme Court Justice Roberts did not have an accident when he had a seizure no one seemed to make it a political cause and of course no one will talk about seizures and epilepsy - shhhhhhhhhhh that is a secret.
Pittsburgh Sanity - I don't know if his seizures were a result of epilepsy or a growth putting pressure on his brain or something else. I do know seizures are nothing to make fun of and have to be terrifying for the person suffering one.
I am stunned when anyone makes fun of someone's medical condition. It shows a total lack of empathy and certainly shows the person is missing something inside when they can put someone down for an illness.
I remembered that Roberts blacked out - I didn't remember it was a seizure. He's lucky he hasn't had repeat instances - or at least none we know of.

Evidently you didn't quite get the message. Mr. Geithner didn't pay Social Security and Medicare taxes for several years while he worked for the International Monetary Fund which he was considered Self Employed. And he employed an immigrant housekeeper who briefly lacked proper work papers. Other tax issues also surfaced.
There is no CPA on this earth that would tell him or file a return without having him pay SS & Med on self employment income. Not a CPA alive or for that fact the immigrant worker. CPA's could lose their license over issues like this.
Now, Mr Geithner stated he used Turbo tax, which is only as good as the person who understands the information needed or inputted to process the return correctly. Most people make errors on Turbo Tax if they chose not to hire a CPA on a difficult return.
Now a spokesman for the Obama Administration stated his "accountant" advised him he had nothing more to pay. There is a huge difference between an "accountant" & a "CPA". Again, like turbo tax if someone has a difficult return they shouldn't have an "Accountant" do it.
He received memo's with each pay telling him he was responsible for paying self employment taxes. If he didn't know what those were, he should have asked and it was his responsibility to hand a copy of that memo over to an "accountant". Again, a CPA would have already known this. But in the end regardless of who does your return you are solely responsible for reviewing that return for accuracy before submitting it to the IRS.

The guy is 68, has health issues and the common sense to resign. It been made clear drugs and alcohol was never suspected to cause the accidents. Sounds like a sound decision and one plenty of people would make.

My dear mother had both, she would be out for several minutes, just stare into space, when she came out of it she did not realize she'd had them and went right on doing what she was doing or thought she was doing at the time. I work with patients who have seizure disorders - not all are one size fits all and not all patients are the same. Instead of trying to be the biggest political hack on the boards, how about an education on the health issue before you spout off about it? Then perhaps those blowing smoke up their you know whats will either shut up or have correct information to relay. If his doctor says he has seizures - and this could be a newly diagnosed disorder, my Mom did not start having them until she was 85 years old, then he has seizures, anyone elses opinion is like many body parts - we all have them, few are alike, and all belong to the person stating them.

Sam, this is the problem with making expectations about waiting around for medical help or the like. When someone's in a normal mental state, one can well expect this, it makes sense. But when someone's out of it mentally, they aren't thinking, rationally.... What makes sense, doesn't necessarily occur to them. When I was waiting for a bus when my car broke down in Albuquerque one day, and there was, I'm gathering a Vietnam vet who was running out into the street and pacing back and forth, yelling at thin air, and thinking that the enemies were out to bomb him, I wasn't sitting there trying to apply logic or reason to his behavior. The first thought that hit me is that he's crazy, and the second is that if he isn't careful, he could get himself, and whatever drivers are going down the road, hurt. But trying to reason with someone who thought they were half way around the world, in a combat zone :o
Would he have thought to call a shrink or get some help? Probably not, about the only thing one could do (though I didn't have a phone on me then) is call the cops, and let them sort it out. San Mateo (which is where he kept pacing out into the street, while yelling at invisable enemies) is/was an extremely busy street. There's a difference between someone who is thinking clearly and someone who is not. At times the on looker can see the situation more clearly then the person in such a state... But they wouldn't necessarily believe reality, so it doesn't enter into their thinking.
Following a stroke that hit my father in 2006, my mother, who was caring for him alone, ended up having several strokes. They were brought on by high blood pressure (her blood pressure was like 256), and the doctors told her that caring for her husband, following his stroke was too much for her. The doctor was like "let me put it this way, right now I have one patient, but if you keep pushing yourself like this, I'll end up with 2..." In the process (she had 3 strokes overall), she started to develop seizures. One day, she was heading up to my sister's house, for an appointment with the neurologist there, when she started having one of these. She was getting onto rt. 22, and all she remembers is that she must have done something wrong, as everyone was honking at her, and after this, she was heading the wrong way, and had to get on the other side of the highway.
She didn't have an accident, though a lot might have had more to do with the other drivers reactions, it was a fog for her, mostly. My sister (who's husband was a police deputy chief) was upset, and was like "you're staying here, until things improve, we're not letting you drive home." My brother in law, was also like "until the doctors give the OK, if you try to drive, I'll call in and have your liscense suspended. Don't attempt it". After doing some adjustments on her medication, she was given the approval to drive again, for SHORT DISTANCES, but she's been notified more then once, that if her head gets like that, stay home, call someone for a ride, whatever. But when this was all going on, she continued driving. She's also going on 74 now, and pushed herself in trying to care for her husband following his own stroke, when tbh he hit a point where he really did need professional care... The idea she should pull over, and call my sister or whatever, didn't even occur to her, then. She was in a bit of a brain fog. People don't necessarily think rationally, when they're in such an altered state of consciousness. And it isn't just drugs or alchohol that can do it. Medical situations impacting the brain can do it also...
All said, it's easy for us to sort out what they should have done, because our heads are clear, and our own thinking isn't similarly muddled or impacted by this sort of thing...

He killed Mary Jo, and then every day at lunch hed get seizures and pinch the waitresses ass and make them sit on his crotch..... something seems to really be wrong with a lot of democrats..... A seizure can happen to anyone at any time. A diagnosis isn't required to have one. My friend had one a few years back without any prior history or diagnosis.

Not much sympathy from me as I've always worked and usually worked two or more jobs continously. No I did not love working at MacDonalds, the grocery store, or moonlighting at an imaging center but it put food on the table, paid the light bill and allowed me to continue my education - so those folks who'd rather sit home and complain about not having a job instead of actually working one of any nature until things get better have nothing to talk about. Also, we could have lots of jobs if the 1% and the wealthy corporations used those tax breaks to create jobs, but since they won't and folks like me can't retire early due to lack of healthcare the unemployment numbers stay up. I have a degree in business, I'm telling you right now - we got some really dirty corporations who care more about their money than their workers or the people of this nation.

Actually, it was one incident - the problem is that after a seizure you are disoriented for days, even weeks and do not make good decisions. Like everyone else, I have not heard one word of testimony yet from the actual trial. So I have yet to make any comments here - ugly or otherwise - about the presumed guilt or innocence of either Zimmerman or Trayvon Martin. I've served on juries twice in the past,and took my role of listening to and judging the EVIDENCE - not the lawyers' theatrics - very seriously both times.
I like to express my OPINIONS here as much as anyone else on politics as well. When I'm expressing something as a "fact", I try to back it up with links to the actual verifiable statements, as I did above. And I try for reliable sources that aren't obviously biased either right or left. It's not that hard.
