First lady lauds administration deportation action

Julie Jacobson / AP

Michelle Obama hugs campaign volunteer Teresa Crawford before speaking to a room full of volunteers, June 19, in Las Vegas.

HENDERSON, Nev. --- Defending the White House's controversial decision to stop deportations of some children of illegal immigrants, first lady Michelle Obama on Tuesday called the measure "an important step" but not "a permanent solution" and vowed that her husband will keep fighting `n for full Congressional embrace of the DREAM Act.

"Just last week this administration announced new measures to lift the shadow of deportation from many of these young people who came here as children and were raised as Americans," she told a rally of about 1,000 supporters in the Las Vegas area, where more than a quarter of the population is of Hispanic origin. "But while this is an important step, it is not a permanent solution. It is not. So Barack is going to keep fighting to get Congress to give these young people a real pathway to citizenship."

"That's the vision that this president has," she added.

On Friday, the Department of Homeland Security announced that it will no longer deport young illegal immigrants who came to the United States before the age of 16, have no criminal records, and who have pursued an education. Those who meet the requirements can defer deportation proceedings for two years - subject to renewal - and can apply for work permits.

The mention of the new policy was somewhat out of the ordinary for Mrs. Obama, who rarely strays from her stump speech to comment on current events. Her reference to the DHS policy and to the similarly-structured legislative DREAM Act won cheers from the crowd in Henderson, Nev.

Obama immigration order poses dilemma for eligible illegal immigrants

In her remarks, the first lady also offered a fierce defense of the White House's economic policies, particularly the foreclosure reforms the president announced in Nevada last year.

She encouraged supporters to remind friends and neighbors of those reforms, saying that as a result "families across the state have been able to refinance their mortgages and keep their homes and keep more money in their pockets each month."

With a nod to her oft-mentioned father, whom she often says took great pride in paying his bills on time, Obama urged backers to evangelize within their communities about the economic gains of the past years. "While we still have a long way to go, we still have more work to do to rebuild our economy, let them know that today millions of people are collecting a paycheck again," she said. "Millions of people like my dad are able to pay their bills again thanks to your president.

Before arriving at the sweltering conference center, the first lady stopped at Sunrise Coffee in Las Vegas. Purchasing two small iced teas - with the sweetener "on the side" - Mrs. Obama joked with the cashier about the crush of press that hung on her every move.

"I don't know what they'll do," she said with a smile when the young cashier eyed the journalists and worried aloud that they would "mob" both of them. "I can't speak for them."

Mrs. Obama continues her western campaign swing tomorrow with two events in Colorado.

Good for her and great for tens of thousands of Hispanics that know America as their only home.

Our country has to take measures that will allow for citizenship for individuals that have been brought here as infants and know no other home. I am not advocating that the parents are to be given any special privileges for a path to citizenship, but the children shouldn't suffer for the sins of the fathers.

... Bull@!$%# and that's a pretty crappy excuse.

The parents did this and the kids now have to man up and face their families LIES and deceit.

I call bull@!$%# on illegal people in our country period.

THE ONLY REASON THE OBAMA"S WANT THIS IS FOR VOTES AND NOTHING MORE PERIOD. IT IS CALLED PANDERING.

The CHILDREN need parents... now all their mothers get amnesty also and benefits and more...

Yes, now everyone knows just get across the border NO MATTER HOW and get free school, college medical and now even law degrees. I for one am sick of paying for illegal aliens health and poor choices.

People like you have destroyed this once great nation by allowing sub standard wages to proliferate under the plight of ILLEGAL ALIENS. All the while subsidizing there education, welfare and well being.

Children or no children this is total crap... Obama and his wife can shove it - IMHO.

The "poor children" card is pathetic and if that is all you have then take your/their children and move them in with you while the parents stay illegal and YOU support them.

OK....the "pandora box" is now open....the First Lady is now OFFICIALLY campaigning for her husband.

Yep, jump in feet first saying Mr. Obama's unconstitutional decision about ILLEGAL children is AOK. Amazing that the First Lady would have something to say about this since Mr. Obama has lost all credability in running the country.

Wait a minute...she did "start" her campaigning for Mr. Obama in New Hampshire when she said that Mr. Obama's mother was discriminated against at that Hawaiian bank....wait a minute....Mr. Obama's mother was the FIRST WOMAN appointed to a high banking position.

This article must be a prelude to the Obama campaign attacking Mr. Romney's family. /s/

This may come as a shock to you Shoysyn, and other ilk like you, but anyone obtaining a law degree and making a better life for themselves and others should not be seen as a "poor choice". But people like you who are bigots and racists want to group every person into the lowest common denominator of being welfare burdens on the country. It may come as a shock to you, but I would wager that you could find many people from this country who are Caucasians that have been on welfare and received college subsidies as they earned their degrees.

I would also hope that you would take the time to see that the vast majority of people from other countries that are making the U.S. their home, to be hard working family oriented people who respect their neighbors and make an honest living as they await their time to become U.S. citizens.

It is narrow minded people like you that strive to keep others from having what you already take for granted. You and others are like you need to believe that there has to an ulterior motive such as only doing this to get their vote. How sad for you and those like you. It is much easier and less stressful to be able to accept people and actions at face value. But that type of sentiment would be lost on a person like you wouldn't it?

Children should not suffer because of the sins of their parents?

So if a woman lies and names you as the father of her child, you pay child support. Now the child lives in a nice neighborhood, the only home she's ever known, thanks to your support payments. But when you do a DNA test, you find out it's not your child. Do you keep on paying support? Does the government require you to keep paying so the child does not have to leave the only home she's ever known?

No. So apparently only American children have to pay for the sins of their parents, according to the Obamas.

As long as people are LEGAL they are more than welcome in America. What our President did was a good thing but how he did it was pure crap. He is gone in November.

It is people of Obama's ilk that will destroy this country. We MUST follow our laws. I know that sounds strange to progressives but it has worked well for quite a long time.

JH. It may come as a shock to conservatives that it was a republican who granted amnesty to millions of people who were in this country illegally almost 50 years ago. There have been numerous changes to our constitution throughout our country's existence. Changes have been made in an effort to help our country grow and to be a better place to live. So when you say that it has worked well for a long time and that it may come as a shock to progressives that people must follow our laws, it may also come as a shock to the conservatives that our country continues to grow, change, a better place to live and become stronger because of progressive thought.

Another good political move for President Obama would be to suspend the federal prosecution of the marijuana prohibition laws. Then pardon and release all federal prisoners being held under marijuana charges around August of this year.

This would save millions required to incarcerate these hundreds of thousands of Americans and unlike the Dreamers, these folks could vote in the next election.

Also an added benefit would be watching right wing heads spontaneously combust.

What about the tens of thousands of Immigrants that have been following the legal process, paid the fees, etc. and have been waiting for years to immigrate to the U.S. Legally?

Where glad you wanted to immigrate the proper and legal way following our laws but were sorry you should have taken the easy way just come here illegally.

If you were brought here illegally you get a free pass and get to move to the head of the line in front of all the people that are trying to follow our laws.

If your were planing on following our immigration laws and immigrate the right way don't bother. Just bring your kids here illegally and after five years they get a pass.

Provided the Policy doesn't get changed since its not "Law" and only Congress can write Imigration "Law".

Yes, he's pandering for votes. Problem is they are so focused on where they can pick up votes, they never stop to think how many votes a particular action will COST them. American taxpayers are watching, legal path immigrants (including Mexicans) are watching ... they are not stupid and they don't appreciate the insult and slap in the face, and they don't want a policy that will only encourage a new wave of illegals coming in to take advantage of this policy and adding STILL MORE competition for very few jobs.

Background checks? Really? Is the Mexican government going to cooperate fully and truthfully? Do they even keep such records that are worth a damn? Oh, we're going to run them through OUR records database???? What the hell good will that do? It is the new wave that is en-route in the coming months/years I'm worried about and THEY ARE FROM MEXICO and have no US history!!!

Nomoresameo....It may come as a shock to you...and this is no big secret...but for a very long time this country has had the ways and means for anyone to enter this country legally...but some people just choose to completely ignore these steps and our laws and come here illegally. Those people...whoever they are...should be put on a bus and deported back to where they came from regardless of what they're parents did or did not do. Illegal is illegal...period.

I'm tired of this constant skirting the issue of laws this country has in place. If someone chooses to ignore them we should prosecute them to the fullest extent of our laws...regardless of age creed or color. So take your bigot comments is stuff them where the sun doesn't shine.

I still want someone from the left to explain why children of criminals should benefit from the criminal activity of their parents? Are we a nation of laws or a nation that no longer believes in laws. If we are no longer a nation of law what then drives us to be civil to our neighbors, to abide by traffic laws, and to pay taxes? If all I have to do is disagree with the law as the President has done, then I am free from restricting my behavior and the courts can have no jurisidiction nor assign consequences to my actions?

This whole decision is simply political malpractice or incompetence.

How in the world does it make sense to allow an 18 year old to remain in this country but you can deport a 16 year old. If you're 29 you can stay, but if you're 31 you get deported. This whole issue of saying there is an "age range" is simply stupid. How about if you're here illegally, you GO! Right away, interned in some camp in Arizona until a judge hears your case, not released on your own recognizance so you can slip away into the shadows and continue to live here.

I'm tired of hearing about the 3-4 High School Valedictorians facing deportation. There are hundreds of thousands of Valedictorians in our high schools each year. If these illegal alien Valedictorians are such upstanding people, they can return to their countries and help improve their own nations. For every illegal alien Valedictorian, there are hundreds of thousands who aren't. Funny we never see the story of "Juan" the high school graduate who's works as a landscaper, earning money under the table:

1) Juan speaks broken English at the 8th grade level of comprehension. His parents have always spoken Spanish to him even though he's been living in the US for 18 years.

2) Juan lives with 10 other people in a two bedroom apartment that's rent subsided by the taxpayers.

3) During this 12 years in public school, Juan ate free breakfast and lunch, paid for by taxpayers

4) While an infant, Juan's illegal alien parents collected WIC and welfare benefits from the taxpayers.

5) Juan's parents are paid in cash, but were given an ITIN so they could file a Federal Income Tax. Last year they filed for the first time, claiming 15 dependants. Even though they paid no Income Tax, due to their "reported" low income, they received a refundable tax credit of $15,000 form the taxpayers.

6) Juan's parents are rolling in cash, because their utilities are also subsidized by the taxpayers, because of their reported "low income" status. After buying groceries using the Welfare Benefit Card issued to them by the State, they stop at the Customer Service Desk in the supermarket and wire money back to Mexico, using Western Union and purchase an international calling card so they can tell their family that the money is on it's way.

In 2011, the IRS Inspector General said American Taxpayers gave $4.2 BILLION in tax refunds to illegal aliens. Just think how much more taxpayer money is beings spent with rent, utilities and welfare payments to illegal aliens.

MSNBC has nothing of real value to report since they ignore anything that does not paint Obama in a glowing light. The fact that Obama is ignoring the law with this immigration action is well beyond the scope of his office. Congress writes the laws, it is up to the president to uphold them. Period end of story.

Sure there are good arguments for not deporting these illegals, but it has to be done the right way or not at all. Obama should not be in the business of picking and choosing laws he will uphold and those he will ignore. How many laws can the average citizen ignore without consequences? How many more laws will Obama feel empowered to simply ignore or wipe away with another presidential action?

This is if nothing else some of the worst political pandering of any president in modern history. It could also be just the beginning of presidential actions that completely circumvent the balance of power in Washington, and lays the foundation for presidents to simply force their will on the American people. This is a terrible precedent for Obama to be setting.

If Obama is a president that is simply incapable of bringing both sides to the table and hammering out a deal, then he is no leader and is not fit for the job. Endless complaining, blame, and excuses is neither presidential or the sign of a leader, and it has done nothing for the country. True leaders overcome the obstacles, they do not make excuses and they do not ignore the rule of law.

John-2006106 it's an intoxicated moron without any knowledge of the world we are living in. President Obama had the wisdom to do the right and most logical thing. As long as Americans can go and do business and buy properties EVERYWHERE in the world, anybody who is interested to come here to live and work should be automatically granted residence. The term "illegal" is a non/sense in this case. If there is such a law to prohibit a person to settle in the USA it must be changed immediatelly in the view of the new global realities.

Well doesn't this start a stream of other laws that people can say are illegal to have forced on to them. If being illegal or committing an illegal offense is no longer a crime, then the whole legal system is no longer valid.

People might say your talking apples to oranges, but actually they are the same thing. Example would be illegal drugs, because the druglord now can recruit children of illegals to sell drugs on a working visa. As the child is here and can not be deported, they can continue to sell the drugs because it is illegal to prosecute them now with this declaration by the president and homeland security. As they can now say if one law is struck down to accomodate me then all laws don't apply to me as they are neither a American citizen nor able to be prosecuted for their actions.

This is a win win for the Mexician druglords if they used this tactic.

There is no such thing, as an Inerantional Criminal data base. It would be great if there was. There is no such thing, as Job seekers eliminating jobs. Only job Creators can eliminate jobs. Case and point; A Coporate structure outsourcing American jobs overseas for greater profits with overseas tax credits from outsourcing, and reducing employee wages. Job Creators create jobs to profit and Job Seekers work for a wage allowing the Creator to profit. If the job Creator decides to outsource instead of create more American jobs from employee labor. Job elimination occurs from Job Creator actions.

Michelle Obama is now on the campaign trail for her failure of a husband. She is fair game. And please quote the "hate tirades", and venom.

Speaking of "trash", isn't that what the Clinton operatives called Paula Jones? You know, the honest lady that got him disbarred for perjury.

@peaches, really? This woman openly admitted that she despised America, and when her glorious husband got the democratic nomination, she said, and I quote, "For the first time in my adult life, I'm actually proud to be an American." Are you freaking serious??? And prior to a speech, not that long ago, when "Old Glory" was raised, you can see her mouthing the words, "All this for a f#*%ing flag...". Un-freaking-believable. And yet, you would defend this racist, elitist, POS??? Really speaks volumes about your character.

Madame O is a joke. I pray nightly (and several times during the day) that after Nov., we won't have to see her or her husband. That she can say with a straight face that her husband is doing the dream act for the Hispanic children just shows how well she can LIE. O's dream act is for the Hispanic vote. Nothing else. O doesn't do anything unless it benefits him.

Both of the O's have shown their utter contempt for the American people and the office of the POTUS. O doesn't want to get rid of Holder because then he wouldn't have a 'on the down low' partner. Lord knows he doesn't want her dressed in her clam diggers with the bun in her hair!

How does the Hispanic community feel about being puppets in Obama's quest to get re-elected?

In 2008 didn't Obama "promise" that he would tackle comprehensive immigration reform the first 100 days he is in office if he was elected?

What Happened? Maybe he had a change of heart and realized that if they had done immigration reform like he promised it wouldn't be a tool he could use in 2012 to try and garner the Hispanic vote because he had nothing to offer?

45,000 Hispanics have died in the Mexican drug war because of the cartels fighting for the best drug smuggling routes into the U.S. because our borders have not been secured and Obama and the Democrats keep making excuses that it can't be secured.

Syria is half a world away, estimates are maybe 10,000 people have been killed there, and its getting all the attention from the Obama admin and the World while whats happening in our own backyard and neighbor is being ignored.

How does it feel to know that people half a World away are more important than your own Kin, friends etc. being killed right next door?

You don't happen to have any family, friends, neighbors, etc. that have been touched by the Mexican Drug war have you?

Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me.

She encouraged supporters to remind friends and neighbors of those reforms, saying that as a result "families across the state have been able to refinance their mortgages and keep their homes and keep more money in their pockets each month."

Who the hell is she lying to, ask any realtor and they will tell you very few people have been able to refinance their homes. She is as big a liar as her husband. And I know, I worked for 3 years to try and get $200 knocked off my mortgage payment from Chase and finally I lost it 3 years later.

"While we still have a long way to go, we still have more work to do to rebuild our economy, let them know that today millions of people are collecting a paycheck again," she said. "Millions of people like my dad are able to pay their bills again thanks to your president.

In 2000, the share was at a low of 41 percent, before the dot-com bust erased job gains for college graduates in the telecommunications and IT fields.

According to a new survey from the Federal Reserve, the median American family’s net worth dropped by nearly 40 percent from 2007 to 2010 — from $126,400 to $77,300 — wiping out 18 years’ worth of accumulated wealth. The crash in house prices accounted for most of that loss. Median family income, which was already edging down in the years before the recession, continued to decline, dropping from $49,600 in 2007 to $45,800 in 2010, about where it was in the mid-1990s.

For a third year, the economic recovery in the United States is floundering, stoking fears of a global slowdown as the European crisis escalates.

Last month, the nation’s employers added the fewest jobs in a year and the unemployment rate actually rose, the Labor Department reported Friday. May was not a fluke either. It was the third consecutive month of disappointing results.

The weakening recovery is a serious vulnerability for President Obama as he faces re-election and it provides traction to his Republican rival, Mitt Romney, who says the administration has not done enough to strengthen the economy. Because Washington remains deeply divided over how best to stimulate growth, the report increases the pressure on the Federal Reserve to take further action on its own.

The United States gained a net 69,000 jobs in May, for an average of 96,000 over each of the last three months. That is down from a 245,000 gain on average from December through February. The unemployment rate rose to 8.2 percent in May from 8.1 in April, though largely because more people began looking for work. And there was more bad news: job gains that had been reported in March and April were revised downward.

my family sat in a thai refugee camp for six months before coming to this country, worked on stinky turkey farms in wisconsin, learned english, became citizens and became successful in many areas through hard work, going with out luxury items, saving, living with extended families in the same house and more hard work. for the president to decide what law to enforce and picking winners and loser in his political game reminds me of the communist country, laos, from which we fled in the middle of the night with nothing but the clothes we wore. thank you mr president for trivalizing the sacrifice of the Hmong people who helped this country in southeast asia through out the 60s and 70s and a warning to any indigenous people contemplating helping the us in the fight against terror; move to mexico and cross the border illegally you will have a much easier time and will not shorter wait to reap the benefits of this once free country. god bless the ideal that once was america.

@orcacorkadorka, very well said. And I'm sorry for the way our country treated the Hmong people during, and after the Vietnam War. You're people are loyal, and honorable warriors, who really never got their "due", and from an old combat veteran, "Thank You". And your story of "fleeing in the middle of the night", should speak volumes to our political leaders who have absolutely NO comprehension of true repression. However, I believe they are trying their level best to do just that! Keep the faith, and keep driving on, and the American dream will once again be alive and well.

                                  orcacorckdorca,

Let's get something straight. The Hmong people fled from Vietnam, and Laos to America. They fled from one continent to another. What your people have gone through was to their benefit courteosy of American military action opposing their oppressors. Without that action, you would still be in your Country of origin. Unless, you were illegally brought here, as a child. Then, the President's action of recent would give you a possible chance to stay where you have grown up without a criminal record. What the President has done effects all Minors illegally brought to America by their Parents or family members. Not only in Latin America....but Asia, and all other parts of the world. Refugee camps Hmong people resided in were utilized as their ports of exit from their country they desired to leave. What are YOU complaining about??? What are you crying about??? This decision by the President does not make a mockery of the Plight of Hmong people. The mockery is in your mind because you want NO other Immigrants having the chance children from your Country had. To the contrary, the President's action emphasizes, and exemplifies it's imporatance. You have a rather selfish viewpoint only Hmong children deserve chances to rectify circumstances beyond their control. Do you think your country is the only country having a population fleeing war??? Wars happen all over the world. You must be a Republican Immigrant.....the worst hypocracy life has to offer.

I will make sure I never spend a dime in a Democratic State. We should start the boycott now.

And I never spend even a penny in a repugnant state (not even my own, mail order is so nice, and my neighbors in KY don't tax their food like the repugnants in Tennessee do). So there, we are even, right? I don't even vacation in repugnant states, if my plane happens to have a lay over in a repugnant state airport I don't even spend any money at their airport (case in point, got laid over in Phoenix, never spent a dime in that airport). One better yet, I don't spend any money with local businesses in my community that are repugnants, not even the local fruit stand. Pulled away from a car wash the other day because it had a local repugnant campaign sign for a county office. My money won't be spent on letting the rich get richer!

what an enlightened soul you must be. You only used "repugnant" a dozen or so times. Truly the class of your neighborhood, i'm guessing.

@union baby, you seem to be a fish out of water in Tennessee. I've known a great many people from the great state of Tennessee, and I have yet to meet a democrap (I had to match your repugnant, which is a typical liberal tendency, to offend, but I digress...). Have you considered moving to a more liberally friendly state? I hear there a lot of new houses in California, ready to be purchased. It strikes me as odd that you claim to "never spend a penny in a repugnant state...", so I'm wondering if you purchase your utilities from Kentucky, as well as your groceries, and gas for your car? you silly liberals are freaking hilarious! Thank you for the laugh this morning!

To the person in Tennessee: Please leave the great state of Tennessee if you hate it so much. Or do you enjoy living in a state that has no income tax and low property taxes? I also don't believe that you don't spend any money there. One cannot mail order water or electricity. I really feel sorry for people like you who see party first and cut their noses off to spite their faces.

                                      SURE she would support it!

It came illegally from her husband.

And she damn sure doesn't want to give up all those free AF ONE jet propelled vacations.

She may be married to stupid, but she is not.
