Behind scenes at G20, leaders pressure Merkel to pull away from austerity plan

LOS CABOS, Mexico -- President Barack Obama expressed support for his European counterparts and their measures to manage the fiscal crisis as the G20 Summit in Los Cabos, Mexico wrapped up Tuesday, saying he believes they are "ready to do what is necessary to hold the Eurozone together."

Behind the scenes, however, one senior administration official said the focus of the summit was to convince German Chancellor Angela Merkel to pull away from an austerity plan and focus more on spending and creating jobs.

President Barack Obama, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Chinese President Hu Jintao chat after arriving for the family photo of the G20 summit, at the convention center in Los Cabos, Mexico.

Another senior administration official was asked whether leaders "ganged up" on Merkel; that official replied, "I don’t think I’d describe it that way." But another official said world leaders were very blunt in their efforts to convince Merkel to sign on to the plan.

While the official declaration out of the G20 Summit pointed to a more integrated financial system and an agreement to help Greece stay in the Eurozone, an official says the group was closer to an agreement to create a fund to loan money to troubled countries.

There is no agreement, however, on how such an account would be funded.

Obama said he was "confident" that over the next several weeks, "Europe will paint a picture of where we need to go," but he acknowledged that the world's economy could affect his election prospects. He used the moment to admonish Congress for not acting on the jobs plan he announced last year.

Obama also used his time in Mexico to meet with President Vladimir Putin of Russia and President Hu Jintao of China, where the primary topic of discussion was the unraveling situation in Syria.

While Obama did say he believed both countries understood that civil war was in nobody's interest, it was clear that neither the Russian or Chinese leaders were willing to call for Syrian President Bashar al Assad to step down.

"I wouldn't suggest that at this point, the United States and the rest of the international community are aligned with Russia and China in their positions," the president said carefully.

The president also said he hopes there will be a formal political transition plan in place in Syria in coming weeks, but he was not sure whether Russia or China would sign on. One senior administration official said there was a glimmer of hope that Putin is now willing to consider scenarios where Assad is not in power.

Anyone that believes that "we are all in this together" is drinking far too much Obam-aid, and eating far too much of his BULLSCHIT twittering prep school rhetoric. This idiot "Leader of the Free World" POS POTUS does not BELIEVE in the Free World. Rather, his leanings are more towards a World enslaved in Universal captivity governed by the Highest level of entitled ELITISTS. NOBUMMER 2012. We Must Not Re-Elect this CLOWN.

Obama is recommending that Merkle back away from economic austerity and towards the spend, spend, spend philosophy of socialism? Because what - it worked so well here in the US?

Germany is going to leave the Euro. They are not going to continue to subsidize the out of control spending of Greece, Spain, Ireland,Italy etc. Even now they are throwing good money after bad.

Obama giving economic advice is like Clinton, Gingrich and Edwards giving marital advice.

What most of the left doesn't seem to realize is that austeruty measures do not mean cutting Granny off from aid or firing every government employee.

The retirement age in Greece is 55 and then it's full social security, medical whatever. France just lowered the age to 60. Damn. I should move to Greece. After all, I'm 55 and I sure would like to not have to work for the next 12 years.

This is what the morons in Greece are mad about - they're trying to get the retirement age to what - 62 or 63?

Obama's greatest and most powerful ally, the "mainstream media", still have that "thrill up their leg" about him which is to say nothing of the support he gets from our fellow countrymen with no "skin in the game". MSNBC will paint Germany as evil if they don't bail out the lazy Greeks, who will waste it away. Obama is always glad to give the shirt off the other guys back.

I've been under the impression for quite some time that German imperialism lost it's murderous war to contol all of Europe in the 1940s. I've been wrong many times in the past. Could this be one of those times?

Hilarious. Obama, President of the broke U.S., giving financial advice to bankrupt Europe. You can't make this stuff up. No businessman would hire someone who handed him a resume' full of wild claims and then refused to provide proof of those "accomplishments"..yet the American people allow this phony to get away with fraud on the grandest scale ever seen.

Clearly, there are rich European nations and there are poor European nations...other than France, Germany appears to be the only rich one...the U.S. problem is, SOLELY, a U.S. problem...the EU financial crisis is SOLELY an EU crisis...

Merkel needs to tell Obama and the rest of the EU nations that Germany is not wasting even one mark on the EU "deadbeat" nations...

Obama is not going to authorize a cash giveaway to Europe, with the fall election looming so close...

It all gets back to the world leaders running their respective countries, like a typical family household, which CLEARLY understands that that the bills HAVE to be met with income...

Apparently, Germany is "wising-up" to being asked to "foot the bill" for other European natiions' socialist agendas...

Obama spent a half hour "answering questions" and as usual, saying absolutely nothing useful.

In the end the EU is going to do whatever they do.

And since Obama and Democrats have gotten EXACTLY what they wanted. They've taken us from being the richest, most successful, powerful, nation in history to just another Western European, broke, in debt, massive deficits, massive government, FAILURE, they definitely aren't going to be asking what we're going to do to help.

And therein lies the true intentions of this socialist president. He wont be happy until we are following the European model to bankruptcy.

..that's a stupid comment if I've ever read one. Why would any leader of any coutry want his country to be bankrupt? What would he gain? Do you see where I'm going there?

      #41.1 - Wed Jun 20, 2012 10:54 AM EDT

I see exactly where you're going. Since socialism eventually leads to bankruptcy of a nation and B.O. is hellbent on instituting state control of every facet of people's lives, it stands to reason he is working towards bankruptcy. Get it now? Seems the only stupid comment was yours.

Everything that has happened within our economy over the last several years is due to the money begging that the current administration has been doing with China. Our industrial base has been sold to the Chinese work force. Jobs will never be available again with unions supporting the traitors to this nation. This administration calls itself Progressive. Not so, it is a bunch of socialist working to subjugate this country to the communist controlled world. God help us if we don't get rid of this trash on November the 6th.

I don't understand why they are all ganging up on Germany. Germany has already forked over billion of Euros to this extremely lazy country with very little hope of ever recovering any of it. If Germany is spend money, it should be on their own citizens not on these loosers. Let them get out of the hole on their own, after all, they didn't have any problems getting into this mess.

Germany understands that paying down its debt is the best way to go , instead of borrowing money , printing money they don't have.

Obama , needs to learn from Germany, stop spending money we don't have .
