HOLLAND, Mich. -- Mitt Romney on Tuesday called reports that his campaign was not vetting conservative rising star Marco Rubio for the vice presidential nomination "entirely false," and said his campaign is indeed vetting the Florida senator.
"Marco Rubio is being thoroughly vetted as part of our process," Romney told reporters in a hastily-organized statement to the media before a stop at an ice cream shop.
While on the campaign trail in Michigan, Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney hinted that his team may be considering Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., as a running mate. NBC's Peter Alexander reports.
The Romney campaign has jealously guarded information about its vice presidential selection process, with Romney repeating a familiar refrain whenever questions about the number two spot on the ticket are asked: I've got nothing for ya.
Today's statement was the first time Romney or his campaign have officially confirmed that his campaign was vetting anyone.
Romney’s statement was a response to an ABC News report this morning that said “knowledgeable Republican sources" said Rubio was not being vetted. The ABC sources said Rubio was not being vetted and had not been asked to turn over financial disclosure documents or complete any questionnaire – steps traditionally part of the vetting process.
The report was a source of concern for the Romney campaign, as conservatives expressed shock at the idea that Rubio may not have been on Romney's short list at all, and prompting questions to the junior senator, to which he declined to comment.
This is the second time Romney has publicly defended Rubio. In October, he said a Washington Post story about Rubio's family was a "smear."
Today, Romney pushed back hard at the use of anonymous, outside sources to report on the VP selection process.
"There was a story that originated today, apparently at ABC, based on reports of supposedly outside, unnamed advisors of mine,” Romney said. “I can't imagine who such people are but I can tell you this: They know nothing about the vice presidential selection or evaluation process. There are only two people in this country who know who are being vetted and who are not, and that's Beth Myers and myself."
Referring to his former chief of staff, who is now heading his VP search, he said, "I know Beth well. She doesn't talk to anybody."

Hopeful - Rubio is a Cuban and is considered a whole other breed of Latino compared to Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, etc. The Cubans generally vote more conservatively than other Latinos. Romney picking Rubio doesn't shore up the Latino vote by any stretch of the imagination.

Actually if Rubio is the VP it will not sway the entire Hispanic AKA Latino vote. In case you all are that blind Hispanics make up a variety of different viewpoints. Not just one. Some are very conservative and yes some are very liberal. And most are moderate. Some will vote for Obama even if the Pope says to vote for Rubio.
I am part Hispanic part Native American. And on the Latino side of my family it is mixed in political Views. Some are Staunch Republicans and others are devout Democrats. I actually think it is a blessing because I get to hear both sides of the arguments. Then make up my own mind. Based on each issue.

The Convention is months away, and that's usually when a VP is selected - so why does ABC think that THEY should determine the timing of the vetting process?

The trully sad part of this whole election cycle is that Romney has no clue..and Rubio ..is saying whatever is necessary as Romney is doing...they would make a great pair..problem is..this country would suffer greatly for it. I am no Romney fan, but I have to say that the Democrats on this site are either, deaf and blind or just plain stupid. Obama and the democrats lie as much if not more than any of the Republicans. That is not to say Republicans don't lie, frankly I don't know of any politician from either party that doesn't lie and/or twist the facts (otherwise known as spin).
Just a little example of the Obama lies to make a point.
1. OBAMA: in the 2012 State of the Union Address and has repeated it on the campaign trail, that oil production under his administration "is the highest it's been in eight years".
FACT: This is a half truth, oil production onPRIVATE lands did increase in 2011 by 396,000 barrels a day. The other side to this story is that the Obama administration actually slowed oil production on public lands by 275,000 barrels a day. In other words his administration reduced that which was under theircontrol by over a quarter of a million barrels a day. It was those nasty ol' Oil people that increased oil production.
2. OBAMA: On his jobs bill proposal, “Every idea that we’ve put forward are ones that traditionally have been supported by Democrats and Republicans alike.”
FACT: Obama proposes to pay for his jobs bill by raising taxes, something traditionally opposed by Republicans and, in the form Obama proposed it, even some Democrats. Senate Democrats were so allergic to Obama’s approach, which relied largely on limiting deductions that can be taken by individuals making over $200,000 a year and couples making more than $250,000, that they’re eliminating it and replacing it with a new tax on millionaires.
3. In a speech Obama gave in El Paso in 2011 he claimed that the double layer border fence that was passed through a bipartisab Congress in 2005 (When Bush was still in office) was "almost completed".
FACT: According to the Department of Homeland Security only 5% has been completed. In fact since Obama took office only 4.3 miles has been completed. Once again of the meager 36 miles that has been completed Obama, has slowed the progress of this program to almost a halt.
I could go on and on, this was JUST a couple in the last year. He has had three years of half truths, and outright lies. Not to mention he has yet to fulfill most of his campaign promises.
On the same note I see the same Democrats on this thread constantly name calling and berating Fox News, well IF they were HONEST they would also admit that MSNBC, NBC, CNBC are as guilty in the other direction.
The latest PROOF of this was Andrea Mitchell's use of a deceptively edited clip to persuade her audience that Romney is out of step with the average voter. I heard the whole speech and Andrea's edited version and there is no doubt that she was attempting to create a perception that was false. She among others in the NBC group, spin, lie, exaggerate, and edit shamelessly to destroy Repubicans.
The truth is although I find Fox news to be somewhat partisan with their specialty "news" shows, like Hannity et.al. I find their local reporting quite factual. I can't say that about NBC. Both their special news casts and their local reporting (if you can call it that) is blatantly biased toward the left and Democrats.
In reality most of the main stream media has been and is pro-Democrat. Even the non-partisan Pew Institute who polled the media on two separate occasions concluded recently that the majority of news journalists considered themselves "liberal". The actual breakdown in the most recent study was 32% considered themselves Liberal, 53% as Moderate, and only 8% as conservative. This is not even close to being reflective of the country which has been polled as roughly 30 percent liberal 39% conservative and 31% moderate or middle of the road.
And here is what scares me the most, the bar for what is considered "moderate" or "middle of the road" has steadily moved to the left. What was considered liberal in 1960 today would be considered radical right wing. If you want proof do some research on President Kennedy and his beliefs and proposals. Just to touch a couple; one, he was an avid anti-communist, two, he believed in trickle down economics, and three he was opposed to the Federal Reserve (see E.O. 11110) - hmm sounds more like Ron Paul than Barack Obama.

Rubio is an anchor baby. His parents were not American citizens when he was born so if he were the VP and Romney got elected Rubio would not be eligible for the presidency if Romney croaked.

Actually Obama EXPANDED gun rights, when he signed a bill saying guns could be carried in National Parks, he also let the automatic gun law, that passed under Reagan, expire.

Funny, how being shot makes you look differently at gun control. Now if we could only shot every NRA member then maybe their opinion of how easily guns can be obtained would change. I am NOT for taking guns away but like automobiles, I want to make sure the people who have guns are competent at using them, know when to use them (like not shooting someone for having Skittles) and that there are strict consequences for misuse of guns.
I would like to see a national registry for bullets so every bullet used in a crime can be tracked. If your not using your bullets to committ crimes then you have nothing to hide so why not have bullets numbered and registered.
If Romney becomes President I plan to stock up on guns! After all the Corporations don't want us to have guns and a Corporation President would make it harder to get guns. Think about it, even in open carry states most businesses do NOT allow you to bring your gun to work. The answer why is pretty obvious. But once the corps get control, they will bring about more gun laws. Look at what they are doing to unions, they have several state trying to break unions and stop people for banning together to cause change, next will be guns so we can defend ourselves against corporate take over. It is NOT Obama gun owners should fear it is corporations. Look at countries without unions, do you think those people have guns? No way!!

Rubio is said to have been born in Miami, so presumably he qualifies. Still, it doesn't matter because he carries very little political weight with Latinos outside his rabid anti-Castro southern Floridia base. Which perhaps suggests his 'short-term value' to the 'short-sighted RNC'....winning Florida in November. Would they be foolish enough to sacrifice whatever benefit a different selection might bring to the ticket merely to gain an advantage in an important swing state? Of course. My guess is that Rubio will be nominally vetted, but Romney will ultimately pick a moderately evangelical Christian to satisfy the national Republican base and dilute the high negatives of his Mormonism. In the long run, the election will come down to whether those independents who spring-boarded Obama into office in 2008 will afford him more time to lead us out of the economic black hole brought to us by Bush, Paulsen, and their Wall Street corporate masters.

The reason it's in question is there is a verified birth certificate with a Kenyan officials signature on it.
1. He travelled to Kenya with a passport at a time when the United States was not allowing travel to that country... What country was the passport from?
2. He went to an Indonesian school at a time when ONLY CITIZENS OF INDONESIA were allowed to go to schools over there. DID his mother give up their (both hers and his) so that her son could get his education?
3. Why won't Obama provide his actual birth certificate and only a poor photo copy made on a computer?
4. Why won't Obama allow anyone to see his transcripts from college? Could it be he used a country other than the United States on his entrance forms?

The fact that there was a ban on Kenya does not mean that the Kenyans would not allow you to enter. As a matter of fact Cuba is still and yet American citizens, with American passports will go through Bahamas or Mexico to Cuba -the only thing they do is ask the immigration officer not to stamp the passport)
