Romney's search for a VP appears to narrow

Mitt Romney’s search for a running mate appears to have narrowed, as clues to whom Romney might select as his No. 2 begin to pile up in the media.

A campaign that prides itself on discipline had, to date, exacted tight control over the process of vetting candidates to serve at the former Massachusetts governor’s No. 2, a fact that Romney bragged on Tuesday.

"I get a kick out of some of the speculation that goes on," Romney told Sean Hannity of Fox News in an interview to air this evening. "I'm not going to comment on the process of course, but I can tell you this: only Beth Myers and I know who is being vetted."

That comment came amid new reports on Tuesday that Marco Rubio, the popular Florida Republican senator, had not been asked – yet, at least – to submit the materials typically associated with vetting a vice presidential candidate.

Sen. Marco Rubio, (R-FL), discusses the housing market in Florida; how the US can profit from free trade agreements in Latin America and why the nation needs to update its immigration laws.

ABC News initially reported that Rubio wasn’t being vetted, and the Washington Post followed up with indications that Rubio hadn’t made it past an initial review by Romney’s high command.

Romney’s quip to Fox served as a knowing acknowledgement, though, of what members of the media have encountered in their search for details on the veepstakes: News is fleeting, largely because the Romney campaign’s high command keeps details on lockdown.

Even some of the most plugged in advisers to Romneyworld profess genuine ignorance of the vetting process.

Myers, Romney’s former chief of staff as governor, is leading the search for a prospective vice president. She might lack some of the skills of political figures previously tasked with her job – John McCain had power lawyer A.B. Culvahouse lead his vetting in 2008 – but Myers is described as a figure whom Romney holds in high esteem. She was selected precisely because it would mean no leaks, and because she understands Romney and his desire for an experienced vice presidential candidate who won’t overshadow the top of the ticket.

Other broad contours of the process have emerged, too. A New York Times story earlier this week floated the idea that Romney could introduce his choice in July, well before the Republican convention in August. Most presidential nominees traditionally reveal their choice of a running mate shortly before their nominating convention.

Larry Downing / Reuters

GOP candidate Mitt Romney speaks at a campaign event at the Bavarian Inn Lodge in Frankenmuth, Mich.

The Times also included a kicker paragraph that suggested that the Romney campaign might be wary of selecting Chris Christie, since the bombastic New Jersey governor might threaten to overshadow Romney.

One informal Romney adviser suggested that a candidate who’s seen his stock improve is former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, in part because Pawlenty would do anything but overshadow Romney. A runner-up in the 2008 veepstakes, Pawlenty is said to be especially appealing to Ann Romney, who’s built a rapport with Pawlenty’s wife, Mary.

Ohio Sen. Rob Portman and Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan are also generally perceived as short-listers for Romney. Each of them, along with Pawlenty, joined Romney for portions of his swing-state bus tour over the last five days.

Officially, most of the Republicans thought to be candidates for the vice presidency have also declined to comment on the process.

"I won't discuss the vice presidential process, out of respect for Gov. Romney," Rubio said Tuesday on CNBC. "I know he is going to make a great choice."

That means that, until the pick is made known, observers are more likely to learn about the process through candidate attrition. Case in point: Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels agreed to become the next president of Purdue University, removing his name from the list of candidates, though he wasn’t ever seen as Romney’s likely running mate.

MSNBC's Alex Wagner and the NOW panel discuss the progress of the Romney bus tour and a new report that says that Marco Rubio has not been vetted for Mitt Romney's running mate.

The few-and-far-between details stand in contrast to the McCain campaign in 2008, which had basically broadcast publicly that the Arizona Republican wished to select his friend, the independent Democratic Sen. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut, as his running mate. With the exception of McCain’s ultimate selection of Sarah Palin as his vice presidential nominee, much about the Republican’s campaign wasn’t secret.

The Romney campaign seems determined to learn from McCain’s mistakes, maybe even to a fault. The process of vetting a vice presidential candidate can be political in its own right; look no further than a top Rubio advocate’s pushback to BuzzFeed about the Florida senator’s supposed exclusion from Romney’s short list.

But in leaking few details about their search, the Romney campaign also loses out on an opportunity to show they’ve at least made an effort to seek out various candidates whose mere consideration might be needed to placate certain corners of the party.

In particular, few women except for New Hampshire Sen. Kelly Ayotte – a freshman lawmaker from New England with only scant federal experience – are thought to be under consideration by Romney.

"I think, unfortunately, Palin poisoned the well on that," said one informal Romney adviser, fretting that any woman selected as VP would draw inevitable comparisons to the former Alaska governor. "I would guess if I were inside the Romney mind that they're worried that any woman chosen will be subjected to a higher level of scrutiny. "

But beyond Rubio, there are virtually no candidates for the vice presidential slot who would represent any diversity on the Republican ticket, a dicey proposition given Romney’s political deficits with women and Latino voters, as well as his opponent this fall: the nation’s first black president.

There is nothing inside Romney's mind except "gee! If I do everything the Koch Brothers tell me to, I'll be President!"

The only vote Romney has secured is the anti-Obama vote because he has presented 0 ideas. Which causes people to be hesitant to stand with him in a election.

Because of this people that are not Obama-phobes won't have a reason to vote for him. The same ignorance that has led people to believe anything negative presented (falsehoods or not) about Obama will lead them to believe a win for him is impossible.

This race is a mirror image of Kerry Vrs Bush... all Kerry had wrapped up was the anti-bush vote.... the anti- anything vote is never enough... especially when there are 3 candidates on the ballot... which there is only one libertarian on the ballot in all 50 states.

If Romney wants independent votes he is going to have to start talking detailed policy and accept questions that are not pre-screened.... which his campaign has already perpetrated he shouldn't do.

This article already shows the MSDNC mindset ... did you notice how pictures of Republicans like Romney and Rubio are usually "not smiling" or "out of focus" ... just like you see in attack ads ? Meanwhile, the pictures shown of Obama are always "in focus" and "smiley-faced".

But the speculation is absolutely KILLING the Democrats with anticipation ... they simply do not know who to attack ! LOL !! I guess they will just have to wait to unleash their venom.

The only promises I've heard Romney give are...

no path to citizenship for children brought into the country illegally,

we will go to war with iran (they're brown, so it's okay right?),

he will cut taxes from the top-down.

Strangely it's not that inspiring. Romney has the same problem he had in 2008 and 2000. The more he talks, the more his approval ratings will drop.

Many people said a bucket of popcorn could beat Obama. And, at the time, I'd hope you knew it was silly hyperbole.

however, a bucket of popcorn might very well beat Romney as long as it smelled good and let Romney speak.

Seriously. Even Rasmussen is saying Virginia has gone blue.

Well,.....Grover Norquist said they want a totally Stepford Republican with just enough working digits to sign his prepared legislation. I think there's little doubt; even among Republicans that Romney completely fits those criteria.

At least Obama is a carbon-based life form who can dress himself in the morning, and his intellectual pedigree remains unchallenged. Romney,......maybe not. Romney is Reagan without Reagan's brains or scruples, and Reagan had neither.

I like how people conveniently forget that Romney and Obama went to the same school.... and one was governor and one was a senator... one has a degree in business the other in political science.

Personally ill take the community organizer... anyone who thinks running a business is like running a country is plain retarded.. a business does not declare war, police citizens, build public infrastructure, educate people, control borders, regulate trade, and isn't accountable for citizens well being physically and economically.... the list can extend to anything not designed to turn a profit.

I wouldn't want Mitt to run America like he ran business at bain capital... gutting peoples pentions for the sake of profit for the few.... that is not how you run a country.... i don't see how people try to spin that experience in a positive light... unless you ignore all the detailed facts

  • Unemployment over 8% for every month of the Obama Administration. Maxed at 10%
  • Over $5 TRILLION in new debt in 3 years after calling President Bush's $4.9 Trillion in 8 years proof of failed leadership.
  • 8 million people who have given up looking for work, which has kept unemployment from being 12% because they do not count as unemployed.

ANYONE on his short list has to be better that VP Biden, unless you are comparing how easily he puts his foot in his mouth (immitation of Indians,...).

This from Politifact detailing some of Obama's emergency supplemental s which is the same way Bush funded the war. Sorry it is so long. But is nice of Baylie to acknowledge that Clinton robbed from Social Security.

As we said, the president's budget for 2010 included funding for Iraq and Afghanistan. On December 16, 2009, Obama signed a law which provided $101.1 billion "for operations and maintenance and military personnel requirements for ongoing military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan and to support preparations to continue withdrawal from Iraq."

Earlier, however, in June, 2009, Obama had also signed a $105.9 billion supplemental spending bill to fund escalating military operations in the Middle East. White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said at the time that "this [was] the last supplemental for Iraq and Afghanistan." We'll cut the president some slack on this one. Because of the way the budget process works, the only way for Obama to step up military efforts in his first year was via supplemental funding. The 2009 budget was approved in 2008, when Bush was still President.

Alas, it was not the last supplemental. On February 1, 2010, Secretary of Defense Robert Gates urged Congress to pass a $33 billion emergency legislation to fund a 30,000 troop-surge in Afghanistan. After repeated requests from Gates and months of debate, the House finally passed the measure on July 27, 2010, sending the bill to President Obama for signature.

I don't know why anyone would vote Republican.

My what a small world. BTW: same kind of things ABC, CBS, and NBC analysts said in 2000 and 2004 when Bush won.

You need to get out a little more.

News services have a tendency to create their own little worlds.

CBS and NBC have a pretty sad track record of inventing stories and facts.

CBS - demonstrating Exploding Chevy Pickup gas tanks that they "encouraged" to explode for drama.

CBS - Dan Rather - pushing a George Bush Story that they knew did not have verifiable facts and witnesses to back up.

CBS - Dan Rather - El Nino stories - Offered Metorologist Brad Sussman a nightly spot to cover el Nino provided he linked it

NBC - caught doctoring Zimmerman 911 calls to make him look like he was stalking martin

NBC - caught doctoring Romney Wawa footage to make Romney look like he didn't understand the electronic sandwhich ordering when Romney was using the opportunity illustrate how easy free enterprise made ordering a sandwhich so easy, and government makes it difficult for a dentist to move his practice to a better location.

These guys are making the Nixon administration Watergate team look like Choir boys.

          How about this …

Marco Rubio writes in his book An American Son: “If my kids went to sleep hungry
every night and my country didn’t give me an opportunity to feed them, there
isn’t a law, no matter how restrictive, that would prevent me from coming here

A campaign that prides itself on discipline had, to date, exacted tight control over the process of "vetting candidates" to serve at the former Massachusetts governor's No. 2, a fact of which Romney bragged on Tuesday.

Poor Rubio couldn't be vetted with a valid (gasp!!) birth certificate? With the number of stories circulating about his parents illegally migrating from Cuba, it is hard to nail down if it was 1955, 1959, 1965, 1972? Curious indeed as to when his parents status moved from illegal to legal immigrant. Is Rubio born of U.S. citizens, is he an anchor baby, or was he brought here as an infant and Obama just saved his butt? According to Republicans, these are all valid questions. Just where is Rubio's birth certificate?

RedDevPS, I think they changed their mind on Marc Rubio simply because he is Latino and they just tried to get 3 different states to puge Latino voters! I guess they think they don't need them or want them! I do believe that President Obama genuinely cares about Latinos and that is why he halted the deportation of kids who were brought here as infants and raised here. I also think the President did it as a political reply to his anger at the GOP for trying to purge Latino voters! They (the GOP knows) President Obama has a hefty lead among them, so they are trying any dirty tactic they can to decrease people who would vote for the President! I hope Rubio gets so frustrated he goes over to the dems! He seems like a good man and I bet they can find a place for him in the Obama administration once he is re-elected! The GOP can spend all the millions they want, they can't buy everyones vote! Obama 2012

                The real liberals are Republicans.

Abraham Lincoln was the most radical liberal president we have ever had. Too bad today's Republicans are more aligned with the Dixiecrats, the remnants of the defeated war Democrats that broke away from their northern brothers over slavery. Abraham Lincoln would not have anything to do with today's Republicans. So I would say the only real Republicans are Liberals!

Adjusted for inflation, ordinary people have been losing ground on payroll for 30 years, since supply- side economics was introduced by Mr Reagan.

By the way, rich people have never been "job creators" unless you count domestic servants. Rich companies, yes, if they haven't off-shored all their work and only kept the lawyers and accountants on the domestic payroll.

Why only the last one and a half years ruk. His first two years don't count?

Because that's when the last Congress took over.

In 2009 and 2010 he was able to get some stuff done. While we can play 'what ifs' to debate the extent of the effects said work had is another story, but if you look at jobs +/- you will see the sharp decline come to a halt and recover to a small positive number.

However since Jan 2011, all we have seen is stagnation. This comes from more of a Congress that refuses to pass anything Obama proposes on principle. Meanwhile Fox News and the like fills people's heads with thoughts that it is Obama's fault that nothing is getting done. Since these people have the IQ rivaled by a lemon, they buy into it. The fact of the matter is that our government needs to work together to get sh*t done. You can't just point and Obama and fault the man, as he has had to rely on executive orders for the past year and a half (which carry only a small fraction of the weight as a law) to get anything done.

                  Ruken

Here is a list of what didn't pass

Dream Act - Severely flawed per Sen Rubio

Cap and Trade - it is such an industrial job killing proposal democrats wouldn't vote for it.

Card Check - once again, democrats wouldn't vote for it either.

As for his budgets, not a democrat or republican voted for any of them.

The only budget that made it to Obama. Fiscal 2009 that Bush refused to sign because it was more spending than he asked for. Obama signed fiscal 2009, added Billions more with the stimulus, more with other additional expenditures congress passed and Bush vetoed, and has continually blamed Bush for the excessive spending it had.

Yeah, what a great guy Obama is, and his best friends Nancy and Harry.

What the hell are you talking about? Totally wrong statement. Get a clue.

Gov Bobby Jindal? Gov Susanna Martinez? Gov Mary Fallon? Gov Brian Sandoval?

Gee, what about Governor Jan Brewer? She's a woman, so there's the diversity. And she's absolutely RABID about Latinos . . . seems to me like she would just fit the bill perfectly!

Republicans don't do diversity, but if they do, it's only for a camera. Republicans are white and male, those who are not are merely tolerated, not embraced.

Like most successful men the brains of the outfit is his wife. Met them both once, (not a fan) shook his hand and politely said the right things, but for sure she is twice the man he is. If Romney wants it, he better get off his ass and get Superman to run or bye-bye.

To everyone that is against Socialism I say Good For You! As such I would like to offer up some suggestions for living a Socialist Free Lifestyle.

If you are robbed, do not call the Police. Hire your own Investigators.

If your home is on fire, do not call the Fire Dept. Hire your own Firefighters.

If you have children send them only to Private schools.

If you own a car do not drive on any public roads only Toll Roads and those
                    which you built yourself.

Do not visit any Local, State or Federal Parks.

If you are retiring, refuse Social Security.

If you are disabled and cannot work, refuse Welfare, Food Stamps, and Medicare.

and whatever you do, DO NOT PAY YOUR TAXES!! You will only be feeding the
                    Socialist Juggernaut.

By following these simple tips and more, you too can live a life free from the
                    crushing controls of Socialism.

This election will be won/lost based on Romney's VP pick. If he makes a mind-numbingly stupid pick like McCain did in '08, this thing is over and Obama will win. If he makes a prudent, intelligent choice...one that is not made for shock value and bluster, it will be close and he may just win.

McCain was too liberal for the Tea Party crowd. They picked Sarah Palin to appeal to the religious right, Tea partiers and to any women who were upset by the fact that Obama got the nomination and not Hillary Clinton. They thought it would work, except Palin lacked just as much experience and credentials as Obama did and women who were poised to vote for Clinton were not dumb enough to vote for Palin who did not represent their actual interests.

Palin tanked McCains chance against Obama. Romney is better off with another boring white guy than he is with another polarizing choice like Palin.

                    John,

McCain had pulled ahead of Obama, briefly, until McCain said the fundementals of the Economy are sound then suspended campaigning just a week later to return to Washington to "resolve" the log jam with TARP.

Romney has a track record making solid choices. The Republicans are very deep with a lot of Representatives, Senators, and Governors both in office and out of office to pick from. Maybe too many.

I think Romney is looking for the best fit with who is solid, seasoned politician, who will strengthen the ticket in the most swing states without overshadowing him.

This may disqualify Rubio, Christie, Gingrich, and possibly Santorum.

The Broadest appeal to the most swing states is Santorum who has been extremely successful in Missouri, Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan, Indiana, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Colorado. He also has great appeal to the Conservatives who are still a bit iffy about Mitt.

Rubio may be helplful with hispanics, although people outside Florida like him, his appeal in states outside Florida is unproven.

Sen Portman is a very solid candidate, would not overshadow Romney, but his appeal outside of Ohio is unknown.

This election will be won/lost based on Romney's VP pick.

Incorrect. This election is already over. Regardless of who Romney picks, he will lose. The electoral college is the sole means by which we elect presidents, and looking at the electoral map, Obama already has more than 270 electoral votes locked up, and therefore will win a second term. The absolute most Romney can win is 263, and that's if we're incredibly generous. Obama is polling way ahead of Romney in all the important states, like Virginia, Ohio and Pennsylvania.

The simple fact is that Romney has no viable path to 270, this election is a mere formality.

Predictions of certainty are almost as silly as boycotting an election. A prediction of certainty invariably leads to fewer votes for the side predicted to win because it is human nature to be a bit lazy. Boycotting an election simply guarentees the other side will win.

I mean, if McCain can pick an ignorant hillbilly from Alaska, then why can't Mitten's ultimately pick a fat Samoan named Fred?

                        You just never know.

                        Bob,

I would once again like to extend an invitation to come watch the election results at my place here in Charlottesville. I want so badly to see the look on your face when the networks call Virginia for President Obama for the second time, and, inevitably, the election.

Thank goodness 51% of Virginians are smarter than you and plan to vote for President Obama.

No campaigning for Bob "Vaginal Probe" McDonnell to get the vp nod anymore? lol

Mitt wants us to believe that Myers is doing it all by herself? Combing through every financial document, conducting every personal interview, and reading every speech and news clipping on all the vetted candidates with absolutely no help?

                        Not likely.

Portman, Ryan and Rubio say they would like to stay where they are.

Christie seems to indicate he may be interested afterall. Hmmm, must not have been vetted.

The GOP/RNC "Zombie and Chief" must get his VP choice approved by the "Coal/Coke Brothers," Goofy Grover," and "Darth Rove." AKA. Karl Rove. The "Romulian" does not want "Trampy Trump" to yell. Your fired!Maybe "Romulian Romney" will pick his VP from his home planet of Romulus? The GOP/RNC "Speculator and Chief" has to make sure his VP is a major poltical flip-flopper, and is economically part of the top 1% of Americans. His VP from his home planet of Romulus must be so "Alien" to the needs of the Middle Class, the working poor, the disabled, and the elderly. The "Romulian's VP must be a cold blooded "Bain Trained" economic speculator. His VP choice will be all for intolerance towards others, little respect for the US Constitution, and will just love the idea of voter suppression. The GOP/RNC "Speculator and Chief" knows how to destroy jobs, and corporations for profits. For any other reason does not compute for the Romulian.

Even assuming Obama were indeed a Muslim and a socialist, is there something in the U.S. Constitution that prevents a Muslim and socialist from running for and being elected as President?

As I recall it, the U.S. constitution makes it clear that there shall not be a religious test for candidates, presumably because the Founding Fathers were a lot smarter than we are and they didn't think someone's religious beliefs should be requirements of the office. And I don't see any requirements regarding political and/or socioeconomical philosophies in order to run.

I really don't see why the big deal about speculating on who Romney is going to select as his VP, it has been proven that the VP pick really doesn't have much influence on the voter. We will know when the Republicans hold their convention. Actually most voters really don't get caught up in politics until after labor day.

I don't believe Rubio, like Cristie, really feel they are ready to run for Vice President. After all look what we got with a President that wasn't ready to govern after only a couple of years as a U.S. Senator.

If Etch A Sketch is our only hope then all of the middle class is screwed. Romney is already selling off America like any other business he's touched.

IF Romney takes over, expect unemployment to be 70% as the only ones working are his banker buddies. Expect to be forced to take a minimum of 5 wives. He will say it's because of the economy but he church says he has to implement this. Expect the Mormon religion to be a major player in all of Romney's policies.

If Romney wins it is all over for a free middle class America.

Obama loses - Due to Biden and weak economy and focus on social issues

Romney wins: Due to his VP pick and the way he can keep focus on "economy" "economy" "economy"

2008 Obama: SOS Secret of Success : High-flying statesman like promises and "Change you can believe in"

2012 Obama: Real SOS- Save my Presidency: Real politician, mediocre record, more talk, less action (still), focus on gay marriage and other legistation that has no chance of passing congress (immigration, buffet rule). Obama and Bush have so many similarities (tax cut to wealthy, war, spending trillions). Obama is acting exactly like Bush (except few issues here and there).

Nov. 2012: Romney or Obama ?? Obama is lucky, he could pull it off again

"You know the point of a VP is only to help get the candidate elected, not to have 'luster', right probe-boy?" Ruken you DO KNOW that if something happens to the president the VP is next in line -- right????? Why do you think you liberals were all over Sarah Palin because of her "lack of experience" but then you voted for a community organizer along with his stooge.

Trying to change the subject, are we? Not really interested in his selection because he has not demonstrated capacity to think beyond what he has memorized!..I truly think it is a frightening thought to have him occupying the Oval Office.

I think unfortunately, Palin poisoned the well on that," said one informal Romney adviser

WOT??? It's clear to see that Gov. Romney is getting some cheap advice from at least one of his advisers. How are women (50% of the voting public) supposed to interpret comments like this coming from a Romney adviser?

Are you kidding me? No Mormon presidential candidate going to pick a woman or anyone darker then beige for vp or they risk their chance of becoming a god.

Mormons don't pick one woman, they need several.
