FRANKENMUTH, MI -- Returning to the state where he was raised and which propelled his turnaround in the Republican primary, an enthusiastic Mitt Romney declared Tuesday: "I'm going to win Michigan with your help!"
Energetic (and clearly enjoying himself despite the June heat) the presumptive Republican presidential nominee predicted victory in a typically Democratic Midwestern state for the second day in a row, following his projection on Monday that he'd win Wisconsin.
"I grew up in Michigan as you know, born and raised here and if I'm lucky enough to become president I'll be the first president in American history to be born in Michigan," Romney said to cheers. "And I won't forget Frankenmuth, I won't forget Michigan, I won't forget how much I owe to this great state to the people here, I love this state. It's a beautiful place and it's got terrific people."
Bouyed by a warm reception from the crowd here, punctuated by chants of "Go Mitt Go," and the notable absence of protestors for one of the first times on his six-state bus tour, Romney might be forgiven his optimism thanks in part to family history here, which he and his wife gleefully put on display this morning.
"I can't believe it. We're in Michigan. Yay!" Mrs. Romney exclaimed. "People don't know how wonderful it is to be from Michigan."
The Romneys certainly appreciate Michigan's wonder -- the candidate famously jokes that the trees in the state are the "right height."
Mitt Romney's father was a popular two-term governor here, and his squeaker win over Rick Santorum in his birth state helped put the primary election away for good. But Democrats have carried Michigan in every election since 1988, and President Obama won the state by a stout 17 points in 2008.
Romney's advisers remain confident of their ability to challenge Obama here, however, noting the power of Romney's last name -- Michiganders are used to voting for a Romney, one top adviser explained -- and the success of the state's popular Republican Gov. Rick Snyder, whose "tough nerd" persona and fiscal focus has shown the state a brand of Republicanism they can embrace.
But Romney faces significant challenges here as well, including his opposition to the president's bailout of Detroit automakers. During the primary campaign, Romney regularly mentioned his opposition and said Obama ultimately resorted to a managed bankruptcy for the automakers, which Romney claims was his plan all along. Today, he did not mention the bailout at all.
Instead, Romney made mention of free trade as a lever with which to prop up the auto industry.
"If I'm president, I want to open up new markets for American goods, make sure that places that won't take our cars, they finally knock down those regulations to let our products go in there" Romney said.

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Tuesday shows Mitt Romney attracting 48% of the vote, while President Obama earns 44%. Four percent (4%) prefer some other candidate, and another five percent (5%) are undecided ....
Nothing Obama does can help him anymore ....

Mitt says he'll win in MI and WI. Maybe. But I doubt it. But if you're going to dream big and make bold statements, why not just say you're going to win in every state? The probability is about the same as Mitt taking both Mi and WI.

Yeah, this is about the sixth article I've read that says he didn't want to talk about the auto bailout for some reason in Michigan. But hey, he did cover this important issue:

Perhaps the "Dream Act" wouldn't have been necessary had Ronald Reagan, the demigod of the right, not given blanket amnesty to illegal aliens back in the 1980s. Blaming children for the sins of their parents is very Dark Ages. The rules for them to benefit are strict. It's not like any and all are eligable. Sensible policies, properly enforced is the right road toward immigratiion reform. By the way more people have been sent packing under the Obama Administration than any since Reagan. Also we have beefed up the border security under W. and Obama. W started with some and Obama carried through with much more. We're not going to get them all, nor should we. Someone has to clean the homes of rich people for a fraction of what they should be paid. Whose going to pick the lettuce or strawberries if the illegals aren't allowed to stay? Imagine a pint of strawberries at $10 in season and more at the edges of the prime picking time. Be careful what you ask for.

Debating the relative merits of people's supposed academic accomplishments or lack thereof does nothing to prove or disprove the ideas presented. I have noted that when confronted with any sort of factual documentation, regardless of which side of the argument is supported, the detractors have nothing better to respond with than personal attacks about who is stupid and who is lying about their credentials. If a news service puts out a story that you don't agree with, well, it simply must be lies....Well, gang, Guess What? There is probably grains of truth in every news item out there, and it is up to intelligent and thinking beings to sift through the rhetorical garbage to find those grains of truth and hopefully base meaningful decisions on those hard won facts.
The ironic thing is, I win either way. Romney's tax plan calls for lower taxes on middle and upper class. I work in tech, and area that is inundated with jobs even in the midst of a global recession. I will still be working as we spiral down the tubes as Ireland did.
Romney is worse for the economy as a whole, but better for me individually. Forgive me for thinking of others.

White Collar Auto.....if it is any consolation, I lived in Detroit for a number of years back at the end of the Carter administration.....like about 2/3 of the people in Michigan, wound up having to leave the state in order to find employment....And ironically, I now live in Illinois, and boy does it feel exactly like it did in Detroit 30 years ago....and yeah, I would consider moving back to Michigan to find a job and a place to live, because it will probably take another 30 years for Illinois to get it's act back together. Michigan and Detroit have been improving, slowly, but improving for a number of years now. We still have family in the area and visit fairly frequently. Alot of good things are finally happening, and the rest of the sheep can't seem to figure out that you cannot have a burgeoning economy while everyone is sitting on their butts not working, not paying taxes, and expecting handouts.
Talk about the flip side...my son graduated college last spring and came home to the Chicago area to find his first real job. After three and a half months of writing letters, sending resumes, cold canvassing businesses, going through Monster, Career Builder every day, going to corporate web sites to fill out online applications, and only being able to get a part time job (two nights per week) as a bouncer in a bar for essentially minimum wage....guess where he finally got an interview and a job......downtown Detroit. Irony for you.

Rick Snyder has things turning around here in Michigan, however the Auto Industry has gone flat. There was some hiring in the past year to replace all the laid off/retired folks, but since then it has been pretty slow.
If Detroit can get it's head out of the sand, they might stand a chance. Michael Duggan is being pushed to run for Mayor and if that happens and he wins, I might actually believe the city stands a chance.

Oh, and did Mitt fail to mention "let Detroit go bankrupt" or is he once again trying to claim that President Obama saving the auto industry was Mitt's idea and just ignore that op ed he wrote. Did Mitt also fail to mention that his Dad moved AMC from Michigan to Wisconsin and threw Michigan workers under the bus? Throw in the Michigan "Vagina Monologues" and women angry at the GOP state legislators and it could be the trees being the right height won't be enough.

Exactly what has Obama actually saved? I am sorry, but I am missing the payoff somewhere. For those in trouble on their mortgages, time was bought before the inevitable boom was lowered....we spent alot of taxpayer money on stimulus which just delayed the inevitable. Those who couldn't afford their mortgages, still cannot. I never thought that I would even see the number of vacant houses, in foreclosure in my community. I never thought that I would personally know as many people who have lost their homes as I do. And not just the ones who got "taken in by predatory lending and collapsing property values by the evil bankers", but folks who were doing just fine until the unemployment fairy came and hit them in the head.....even extended unemployment benefits are not going to pay a mortgage bill. Do you know the only plus side that I have noted....traffic is alot lighter on the tollway in the morning....fewer of us going to work at all. I see rows upon rows of vacant businesses (not huge 1% conglomerates, but small businesses that maybe employed 50-100 people each), row upon row of vacant retail space....none of which is producing jobs, producing tax income, producing anything except to continue to depress property values of the community.
Well Sue you can blame it all on the right wing conservatives that certain nutty Americans voted into office. The GOP are not job makers, they are job brakers. This fiasco with houses, corrupt wall st., two unpaid wars, are all the doin of the Bush administration. So cleanin up a large mess that Bush left for Obama is gonna take a while. So get your hed out of the sand a c wats really goin on . 8 failed yrs of Bush or 4 mor yrs of Obama. Hmmm, I'll take Obama. What is sad, is that if you vote for Romney, you would be voting against your own interest. Dont understand why middle class conservatives want to do that. It boggles the mind.

This will be a tight one, and my current Projection: (Currently the states that will play the biggest in November are Michigan, Ohio, Virginia and Wisconsin. However, if the election were held today, Obama would win Michigan, Ohio, Virginia and Wisconsin.
The key months for this race are going to be September and October. And as far as the debates, Romney may have a problem in this area.
For now, I’m still sticking with these numbers

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Tuesday shows Mitt Romney attracting 48% of the vote, while President Obama earns 44%. Four percent (4%) prefer some other candidate, and another five percent (5%) are undecided ....

Actually, I use many polls, and I see Obama beating Romney by 5 to 8% in Michigan.
To continually let him not provide specifics for his vision for this country is journalist malpractice!! To report that he declared he would win Michigan means nothing; this is campaign rhetoric! Mitt Romney is a deeply flawed nominee and it's scary that he is running for this office. I dont see this being a 50-50 election. My personal belief is during the debates the election will swing- The facts are not on Romneys side. Wages stagnant, productivity up, ceo compensation up, wealth disparity widens.

Better rethink that "I couldn't vote for Romney if my life depended on it" statement because if you are 75, or plan to be, your life does depend on it! Obamacare is going restrict life saving treatment for folks over that age and instead replace it with "comfort care". In short, in order to save money and cut costs on Medicare, President Obama plans to let you die. Think about that long and hard. Since I am an independent voter and definitely not a Romney fan I suggest that you find a small party candidate that actually has your best interest in mind and consider him or her. Romney can neither win Michigan or Illinois nor does he need them to become President. I believe he is blustering to cause Obama's people to spend money in Michigan. Romney cannot win 10% of the vote in Detroit, Flint, or Dearborn with the black and Muslim populations there.
