Romney tweaks Obama's speech: 'Talk is cheap'

CINCINNATI -- Speaking immediately before President Obama's economic speech in another corner of Ohio, Mitt Romney said Thursday that "talk is cheap," and that the president's rhetoric shouldn't earn him another term.

"You may have heard that President Obama is on the other side of the state and he’s going to be delivering a speech on the economy. He’s doing that because he hasn’t delivered a recovery for the economy," Romney said. "And he’s going to be a person of eloquence as he describes his plans for making the economy better.  But don’t forget, he’s been president for three and a half years. And talk is cheap. Action speaks very loud. And if you want to see the results of his economic policies, look around Ohio, look around the country, you’ll see a lot of people are hurting."

Mitt Romney, the GOP presumptive presidential candidate, attacks President Obama on what he says has been three and a half years of inaction on jobs and the economy.

The speech served effectively as a "pre-buttal" to Obama's own remarks. (Romney moved up the timing of his speech so as to avoide an overlap.) And it also offered a preview of the looming battle between the two candidates over the election's top issue -- the economy -- in a swing-state that's been ravaged by the fallout of the recession.

Ohio's unemployment rate stood at 7.4 percent through the end of April (the last month for which data is available), lower than the national rate of 8.2 percent. But Romney slammed Obama for the weak national economy as well, urging voters to hold the president accountable for his management of the economy.

"Look what’s happened across this country. If you think things are going swimmingly, if you think the president’s right when he said the private sector is doing fine, well then he’s the guy to vote for," Romney said. "But when he said that, there was such an outpouring of response from the 23 million Americans out of work or underemployed that I think today he’s not going to say it again. I think it’s more likely he’s going to say, 'Give me four more years, even though I didn’t get it done in the first three and a half.'"

Romney's speech to roughly 200 supporters gathered on a factory floor deviated little from his traditional stump speech, but took on an extra air of importance as today marked the first time both parties' nominees have campaigned in the same state on the same day.

Both campaigns consider the Buckeye state to be essential to their electoral success in November, with Romney strategist Russ Schriefer telling reporters yesterday that "There is no state that is more important than Ohio," and praising the state's controversial Republican Gov. John Kasich.

Today, Romney tweaked his economic message ever so slightly to appeal to the Rust Belt state, where manufacturing plays a significant role in the economy and where its revitalization might be acutely felt. The presumptive GOP nominee took aim at China, vowing as he has done in the past to label the country a currency manipulator on day one of his administration, and praising free trade, which Romney said he discussed with local business leaders before the speech.

"Trade is good. Of the business people I met with just a few minutes ago a number of them said that their business relies pretty substantially on selling products to other nations. It’s good for us to be able to trade with other nations. It creates jobs here," Romney said.

1776freedom:

I will make the assumption we can have a fact based discussion. Obama had 11 month of a super majority(providing no slippage and the two independents(sanders+liberman) agree. Since then we have had 180+ and counting filibusters and most of the 11 months were filled with the fight over the RepubliCon Heritage Foundation, Romney tried health plan.

Yours has been the party of no and the party blocking everything.

Our system is based upon compromise- we do not have a parliamentary system of govt. Your party is running on pure opposition

Yep. Oh, BTW, talk about someone, ahem...Etch-A-Sketch, certainly hasn't a thing to run on, except the idea he somehow thinks his talking points have some weight vs actual solutions to America's problems.

Obama had a super majority got everything he wanted and it is a total failure.

Nope. If you are referring (mainly) to the HealthCare Act it doesn't go fully into effect for another two years. There are those that are benefiting from existing conditions, and others that have health coverage until age 26. Not a fail, troll.

But the romney is a liar. He talks about the economy but forgets a few things. Like how it was the bushman & mr grover & the gop who crashed the economy in 2007. And romney forgets how their treasury secretary was crawling on his hands and knees begging the people of the country & to congress to approve tarp. Or else, the country would go from economic free fall to economic melt down. Meltdown, a state in which the economy would not recover from ever.

I tell you the videos where played all over the world. It was disgusting.
Because just 8 years before we had a surplus. Then our treasury secretary on his hands and knees, a common beggar. And bin laden was still alive. Thinking he had won the war on terror. I tell you obama took over & changed all of that.

No more treasury secretary begging to stop an economic melt down. No more bin laden thinking he had won the war on terror. No. No. Things have changed a lot in 3 years. The economy bottomed in 2009 & is now growing. The stock market is already at near all time highs. Bin laden sleeps with the fishes. The war on terror is nearly won, hardly in the news or discussed. Thanks obama.

No. No. What i was saying that when obama took over, it wasn't only that the economy was in free fall, the stock market falling faster and farther than in 1929. No. No. It was the possibility of complete economic meltdown was the reason the bushman's treasury secretary was begging, hands clasped and on his knees. Eyes closed. Pleading like a common beggar. Shocking. Everybody knew the bushman had started with a sound economy with a surplus.

But now, in 2008, without govt intervention, the large banks and large financial institutions would close their doors and then companies and people would no longer have a way to get access to their money. So the economic calamity would spread with nobody being able to get their money to spend and companies going out of business one after another because nobody had any money or was spending anything.

What was needed was to have a controlled economic collapse. Some banks & financial institutions were too big to fail. Too many people relied upon these companies for the companies to fail. Had these companies disappeared in a flash, it would take months if not years for people to get their money out. The smaller banks were closed with depositors getting $0.50/dollar above the insured amounts. But the way that our economy works, it's like a circle. Peter, pays paul, who pays mary, who pays peter. It that chain was broken for months and years, the economy would simply melt down. The economy would longer exist.

But obama turned things around in a flash. Figured out a way to get really cheap energy, natural gas dropping by 2/3 in price. That & obamacare brought back mfg jobs from china. Nobody is talking about an economy that simply does not exist anymore. No. No. It's just a matter of whether apple & google should be added to the dow industrials to raise it by 1,500 points. And how to add apple smoothly because apple would immediately become 1/4 the value of the dow index.

            #53.4 - Thu Jun 14, 2012 6:39 PM EDT

Obama has turned nothing around we are in worst shape now then we were in 2008. Obama care is stifling job creation in fact when you talk to employers they have come right out and said this is the main reason they are not hiring along with Obama's choking regulation rules. Its time for Obama to go.

Was it the record income tax revenues?

Was it 52 straight months of job growth with low unemployment until the Democrats took control of Congress

Obama solution to the economy is to give more taxpayer money to public unions. Liberal animals where do you think all that stimulus money went. You pray to a socialist. Obama had a super majority and what did he do take care of the unions and force socialized healthcare down our throats and then plays the blame game. Obama has his solution which is more gov't which produces nothing but debt and poverty

Performance deserves recognition. As governor, Romney increased state debt to among the highest in the USA while failing at creating jobs. Obama has led the nation to recovery with the creation of private sector jobs.

Bush-Cheney ran up the biggest USA debt in history. $7.0 trillion is owed to China under Bush's watch. Obama's debt run up is trivial in comparison. al151998 get your numbers straight rather repeating Republican propaganda.

Obama has been successful in creating private sector jobs, and they continue to increase. Bush-Cheney left the USA with a debacle, and Romney is clueless in resolving it.

Example: 1776freedom - Obama has plenty of ideas but can't get them past the Grover Norquist band. Pres. Obama should blame Bush - he increased our debts due to his mismanagement. 1776 would have done the same thing. I believe Pres. Obama truly wanted to do great things for the US - unfortunately he wasn't able to do them. He did accomplish a lot however. More illegals were deported in Obama's 3 years than Bush's 8 yrs. Bil Laden is dead!

Simple statements from simple minds. The economic crisis occurred in Dec 2007 during the Bush administration caused in large part from the policies created during his tenure. A record number of filibusters in the ensuing 2 years during Obama's tenure, in keeping with the doctrine "we will do everything and anything to ensure Obama is a 1-term president" has stymied any kind of meaningful progress. A majority government does not shield you from the filibuster.

So yes, Bush & Co. exploded the deficit with the unfunded wars in Iraq & Afghanistan and the Bush tax cuts that favor the rich. And Bush & Co brought the economy to it knees in September 2008, with job losses of 500,000+ PER MONTH as he was leaving office. And you have the gall to bitch because Obama hasn't "fixed" the economy or the deficit (with ZERO cooperation from the GOP)? You take the cake 1776.

In 2008 Obama's speeches were promising. While too socialistic for my taste, I could see where he might help clean up some of the mess in which Bush delivered us. Fast forward four years, and honestly, I'm sick of Obama's speeches. All he does is point fingers while blaming others and speaks of improvements on which he will never deliver. In 2008 pointing his finger at Bush was understandable. Pointing fingers at anyone in 2012 except at himself is an error in judgment and reeks of a small child throwing a hissy fit because that child could not get his toy to do what he wanted.

In 2008 there was a message of hope and change. In 2012 hope has been erased and there has been little to no change and what change has occurred is not the long term answer for our country.

In 2008 I voted Obama. In 2012 I am voting Romney.

Did Bush give us this issue are was it the Democratic congress. I am tired of hearing its Bush's fault the facts arent there they never were. The housing bubble can be attributed to the Democrats and thier policies of everyone should have a home when in reality alot of these people should have never had a home. I hold Chris Dodd and Barney the F ag Frank responsible for the economic demise in the US.

                                          al,

Except for the fag remark, those are very good points. It was not my intent to remove blame from those present throughout Bush's tenure. They are also very much responsible.

Obama called Bush unamerican for a 450 billion dollar deficit so what is Obama for a 1.3 TRILLION dollar deficit.

Obama's debt reduction plan is to spend 1.3 trillion dollars we don't have. Typical liberal socialist thinking
