Team Romney, RNC announce raising nearly $77 million in May

Just hours after the Obama campaign announced that it, the Democratic National Committee, and other Obama-related committees had raked in $60 million in May, Team Romney said they one-upped them.

Their Romney campaign/Republican National Committee haul: $76.8 million. They also reported having a combined $107 million in the bank for all of their committees.

“We are encouraged by the financial support from a broad range of voters," Romney Victory National Finance Chairman Spencer Zwick said in a statement. "Voters are making an investment because they believe that it will benefit the country.”

But if the financial reports from April are any indication, much of that nearly $77 million is coming in the form of big five-figure checks from large donors.

Around this same time last month, the Romney camp and RNC reported raising a combined $40 million. But when we saw the actual Federal Election Committee filings, it was $11.7 million for the campaign, $11.4 million for the RNC, and the rest -- $17 million -- for the Romney Victory Fund.

The Romney Victory Fund -- which also includes coordination with the state GOPs of ID, MA, OK, and VT -- is the mechanism that allows donors to contribute up to $75,000 each. In mid-May, both Mitt Romney and his wife each contributed $75,000 to the Victory Fund.

There is also an Obama Victory Fund, which allows large donors to cut equally big checks. But when Team Obama announced raising $43.6 in April, the FEC filings later showed that the campaign raised $25.7 million, the DNC raised $14.3 million, although nearly half of that DNC money came from a transfer from the Obama Victory Fund.

(When Team Obama collects large checks, the first $5,000 go to the campaign, which is the individual maximum; $30,800 go to the DNC, which is the max; and the rest go to the other committees.)

We will not be able to get a campaign vs. campaign or party vs. party comparison on these numbers until June 20, when FEC reports for May are due.

yet you agree with Romney said he will pay every business owner 2 thousand dollars for every person they hire and train. Where is that money coming from. Obama gave each state stimulus money to jump start jobs. The governors in that state did nothing to jump start jobs. So if capitol hill keeps saying no to jobs, where will Romney get the funds from. Think before you vote.

Guess obama's evolution didn't pay off as much as he thought. At least Romney did not have to sell out his morals or beliefs to make him self popular with a special interest group.

If NAMBLA could make a large donation I would not be surprised to see obama campaigning for pedophiles.

obama believes in whatever you want him to beleive him to get your vote and $$$.

@PAt.. no one is looking in you bedroom. Now please do those things that people do in the bedroom off the streets and out of our public schools.

I personally don't care if you like to dress up like Little Bo Peep and make it with a Great Dane. Just stop trying to convince me that "Jesus would support it". Stop teaching my kids that they should experiment with it and stop publicly doing it where I might see.

Btw.. what did you guys do to that poor monkey?

Inevitably every candidate has to "pander" to some portion of their party. In Romney's case he has to put on the "ultra conservative" faced at times to make the far right happy. In Obama's case he has to put on the "moderate" faced to try to get votes from the independents.

Maybe this whole voting thing is outdated. Instead we could just auction of the office of President to the highest bidder. It's a lot easier to count dollars than ballots and the assumption is the candidate who raises the most money will win the election anyway.

No he won fair and square. It didn't go to the scotus like Bush vs Gore. McCain was a decent candidate. Not my choice but a good man. Not a lying bastard like Romney.

I know the dirt bag Mittens was my gov. He was not disliked... he was hated. MOST people hate liars.

All those that think Wisconsin was about ALL unions, it wasn't. Walker bills didn't change collective bargaining for police and firefighters. The head of those unions have Republican family in the House and Senate in Wisconsin. So those unions are exempted. When are you going to write about how those unions need to be placed in the same restriction as the teachers and public gov't workers. If unions are so bad, then why are those okay?

Its really sad money influences who people will vote for. Morals and values for some people are blinded by money. All money will do is divide and polarize USA citizens causing hatred, bitterness and sadistic behavior. I guess some people can't be happy unless people are homeless, starving and without health insurances.

What ever happen to compromise in politics? When politicians are not willing to compromise or have the attitude my way or the highway, then there is only one way this country will head. No matter what good Obama does Romney will give him a F. What does that tell you about the man?

I think to some extent the money thing as an influence is way over rated. The media does partisan politics and I feel probably has a much greater impact on elections themselves. I don't buy the "highest bidder" theory gets folks elected.

Also other organizations like AARP and unions do partisan politics, its not all super pacs. Also the incumbent can go around the country all the time making partisan speeches on taxpayer money.

FDR said "the worst thing government can do is unionize government workers." Well our elected officials did it so they could get elected and the quid-pro-quo was give us this we give you that. Now almost every city and county government in the United States is broke because of it. Job well done!!!

Every politician has their hand out and wants money and needs money. Television and radio jack up there rates for political commercials. Its big business. Someone has to pay for it.

You people like to pick and choice from quotes.

FDR had NO problem with state or city workers belonging to unions.

By the way... you got your 40/hour work week because of unions. And paid vacations and health insurance. That will all end because some jerks don't want to pay union wages. They want to pay slave wages to people in China.

I really enjoy the logic of the left. obama gets big donations from rich liberals - good, Romney gets big donations from rich conservatives - bad. obama raises a lot of money from all sources - good, Romney raises a lot of money from all sources - bad. It must be really hard to be a democrat/liberal. Some of them have to understand how illogical they sound when they take postions like these. Oh well, liberalism is a mental disorder in obviously true so we can see how a liberal can hold a position like these without shame.

This is truly the beginning of the end for representative democracy in this country.

The American for prosperity fiasco has now made grass roots contributions meaningless.

No longer could you consider the Scott Walkers or Mitt Romney's of the world as elected officials. They are nearly spokesmen for the Sheldon Adelson's and Koch Brothers of the world, and of course they don't have to be voted in or adhere to any constituents.

                                    Truly depressing.

No more $87,000/year lawn mowing jobs at the City Parks Division financed on the backs of taxpayers.

                                      The voters are speaking!

It is totally outrageous that this kind of money is wasted on this. I just wonder how much of my money that I spend at the grocery store goes into this? I wouldn't give a politician a dime, but then again, I don't matter. It just makes me cry to know that so many people could be helped with this kind of money and it is just thrown away by the rich & powerful.

I agree. The politicians are looking out( Democrat or Republican) for themselves and themselves alone. The only way things will anyway change is if they learn to work together. A marriage, a bussiness or anything doesn't work without working together. All the campaign money is spent on mud-slinging and making promises that never seem to happen.
