Team Romney, RNC announce raising nearly $77 million in May

Just hours after the Obama campaign announced that it, the Democratic National Committee, and other Obama-related committees had raked in $60 million in May, Team Romney said they one-upped them.

Their Romney campaign/Republican National Committee haul: $76.8 million. They also reported having a combined $107 million in the bank for all of their committees.

“We are encouraged by the financial support from a broad range of voters," Romney Victory National Finance Chairman Spencer Zwick said in a statement. "Voters are making an investment because they believe that it will benefit the country.”

But if the financial reports from April are any indication, much of that nearly $77 million is coming in the form of big five-figure checks from large donors.

Around this same time last month, the Romney camp and RNC reported raising a combined $40 million. But when we saw the actual Federal Election Committee filings, it was $11.7 million for the campaign, $11.4 million for the RNC, and the rest -- $17 million -- for the Romney Victory Fund.

The Romney Victory Fund -- which also includes coordination with the state GOPs of ID, MA, OK, and VT -- is the mechanism that allows donors to contribute up to $75,000 each. In mid-May, both Mitt Romney and his wife each contributed $75,000 to the Victory Fund.

There is also an Obama Victory Fund, which allows large donors to cut equally big checks. But when Team Obama announced raising $43.6 in April, the FEC filings later showed that the campaign raised $25.7 million, the DNC raised $14.3 million, although nearly half of that DNC money came from a transfer from the Obama Victory Fund.

(When Team Obama collects large checks, the first $5,000 go to the campaign, which is the individual maximum; $30,800 go to the DNC, which is the max; and the rest go to the other committees.)

We will not be able to get a campaign vs. campaign or party vs. party comparison on these numbers until June 20, when FEC reports for May are due.

Maybe Obama should have been in DC to welcome the D-Day survivors and treating them with respect instead of blowing them off to fund raise in CA on our tax $$$$$. These are the guys that saved our nation from being invaded. Obama has no respect for anyone but himself and how can he?

Obama is against voter ID because it is racist but you have to have a photo ID to get into a Michelle Obama book signing! HUH?????

That would be the Bush's and Rice's who profit from Oil, Shrub and Condi has her own fleet of tankers for crying out loud. What do you get when you have TWO Oil Robber Barons in the White House at one time? They get a 'free' war! They have been in business with muslims their whole lives, Iraq/Afghanistan only made them richer. Get educated or get lost.

Romney; By the Corporation and For the Corporation, it should read 'Corporations are making an investment because they believe it will benefit themselves.' GOPers, we're still paying for the Oil Robber Barons Afghanistan Pipeline, a decade and 5 TRILLION later. Please ask your Robbers to reduce the price of gas and maybe 'Voters' will actually have a buck to contribute.

Be very proud of Mittens that corporations and wealthy ba$tards funnel money to his campaign. Because you simply don't matter to them red and neck unless your checking account has a ton of zeros.

YES. voter suppression!! It is ONLY the GOP controlled states that passed such laws. They are also the states who have the biggest proportion of poor, minority DEM voters. That is the reason that FL started purging 180,000 registered voters who "looked like" they might be illegals. Im glad the DOJ put a stop to THAT and voided a few of these voter ID laws because they violated the Voting Rights Act of 1966!!

So in addition to trying to BUY the election, they are also trying to steal it! WHY? So they can privatize SS and Medicare. After all, that is the reason the last 3 GOP presidents deliberately caused this debt crisis!

Many poor and minority voters dont have the means, transportation etc to go and get a Voter ID! Notice which states they are. a large percentage of them are on the watch list of the Voting Rights Act, which says they may NOT alter voting laws with the approval of the Justice Department! at least 4 of these laws were deemed void because they violated the Voting Rights Act of 1966! Why not do some reading ( if you're serious and non-biased) and find out what the issues are!! REMEMBER, the ONLY way the GOP can win this election is with a LOW democrat voter turnout!

        #34.2 - Thu Jun 7, 2012 2:05 PM EDT

OMG!...who in this country that is a legal citizen DOESN'T have to have some form of ID at one time or another? Seriously??

And if they don't have the means to get (and don't already have an ID, yeah, right) a voter ID, how do they magically have the means and transportation to go and vote??

Do people even think before they post????

Maybe instead of imposing the burden on the voter you should be hounding the secretary of states and finding out why they apparently, by their own admission, can't manage to keep up with their voter rolls. Your ID to vote is that little card they send you in the mail after you register. It's called a voter registration card. It's their responsibility to make sure they are registering legal voters. So in essence what all the red states are saying is "we're too stupid to do our jobs". If that is the case, then they shouldn't have a job.

Jax A....... we think alright. that is why we know this is all about voter suppression. Republicans KNOW that is one of their ONLY chances to beat Obama. They made THAT clear when they announced this plan 2 years ago. And all of your tirades arent going to change that. The country knows what's going on! in 2000, Kathrine Harris purged 40,000 felons from the voting lists in FL. Ppssstt..... turns out MOST OF THEM were NOT felons at all, but WERE overwhelmingly black and likely democrat voters. The current governor purged 160,000 thousands of voter who "appeared " to be illegals until that was STOPPED by the Justice Department . Everybody knows what's going on. And it certainly is not patriotic and borders on treason. Denial of voting rights is illegal.

          #34.5 - Thu Jun 7, 2012 6:37 PM EDT

Oh jeeze Tom...back to the 2000 election that Gore just couldn't find a way to steal. If you want to talk about purged votes, what about all the absentee ballots Gore wouldn't allow from the military overseas? Funny, that gets lost...and STILL doesn't matter, because Bush won the first count, the second count, and the subsequent recounts done by independent auditing firms. It was 12 years ago, you lost then, and you're bigger losers for whining about it still.

Now...back to THIS DECADE and YOUR ridiculous "logic."

YOU...yes YOU.... still haven't backed up YOUR laughable talking point, and I quote:

Many poor and minority voters dont have the means, transportation etc to go and get a Voter ID!

I notice you didn't address it, you just had a twelve year old tantrum to cry about to deflect. So...how is it all the poor and minority voters DON'T have the means or transportation to get ID, but somehow, magically DO have the means or transportation to vote??

Can you explain that laughable soundbite, or are you going to go off on another tangent because you can't??

The Unions don't have a high enough membership to put pressure on anybody. You just confirmed that yourself. The unions were used by the 1% as a 99% organization to go after. That is why Walker followed up his Koch funded union busting with bills to remove labor laws. However, your NAFTA (North Americans F*cked in the A*ss) GOPer party will make sure your job is outsourced as well, or they'll bring in an HB-1 Visa holder cause you just aren't as smart as the foreigner who is going to replace you for half the salary and ZERO benefits. In fact, India wants to bring charges against the USA for not approving more HB-1 Visa holders to replace skilled american workers. Quote from Forbes magazine today from an Indian IT company, ' we had a job in San Francisco and told them we would supply 10 workers from India to complete it on time. Only 3 HB-1 Visa's were approved! Our client was very angry because the only option was to complete the work at a higher cost with poor quality workers. Guess who's poor quality........ You. So yeah, you want this bs to continue then vote for Mittens.

When the lack of effective domestic policies by Bush (a.k.a catering to the rich) nearly destroyed the US economy back in 2008, economic experts said that it would take at least a decade or more to recover. Republicans not only conveniently forget the Bush $10 trillion deficit and his tanking of the economy, but they claim that Obama should have fixed it all in 4 years contrary to what the experts predicted. All of this while they keep saying that government needs to keep out of the private sector! But once again fickle Americans have short memories!!

The Democrat party is done. This 2012 election will probably be the last that a Democratic presidential candidate will even collect near to what the Republicans will collect.

Big money and corparations are conservative and Republican by nature and will put far more money into Republican candidate in the future then a Democrat.

The Democratic party will fall in popularity to be not much more then the Comsumer or Green party.

Unfortunately we are ALL on the same ship and no matter who wins an election, we still will have major problems that need to be addressed. 1% vs. 99% is a real problem. If the masses are starving they will eat the wealthy. Who say the country is bankrupt?? meanwhile we spend in excess of 2Billion to elect a president. ANYONE who does not see a problem here is insane! Our greed has murdered our democracy but most of us don't even know it yet. A metaphor:: "Our country is like one of those people who use to be very attractive when they were younger but booze, drugs & poor diet have taken it's toll over the years. The rich and super rich deal internationally and among themselves. The only value the middle class and poor have is what they can provide or do for the rich and wealthy.
