Team Romney, RNC announce raising nearly $77 million in May

Just hours after the Obama campaign announced that it, the Democratic National Committee, and other Obama-related committees had raked in $60 million in May, Team Romney said they one-upped them.

Their Romney campaign/Republican National Committee haul: $76.8 million. They also reported having a combined $107 million in the bank for all of their committees.

“We are encouraged by the financial support from a broad range of voters," Romney Victory National Finance Chairman Spencer Zwick said in a statement. "Voters are making an investment because they believe that it will benefit the country.”

But if the financial reports from April are any indication, much of that nearly $77 million is coming in the form of big five-figure checks from large donors.

Around this same time last month, the Romney camp and RNC reported raising a combined $40 million. But when we saw the actual Federal Election Committee filings, it was $11.7 million for the campaign, $11.4 million for the RNC, and the rest -- $17 million -- for the Romney Victory Fund.

The Romney Victory Fund -- which also includes coordination with the state GOPs of ID, MA, OK, and VT -- is the mechanism that allows donors to contribute up to $75,000 each. In mid-May, both Mitt Romney and his wife each contributed $75,000 to the Victory Fund.

There is also an Obama Victory Fund, which allows large donors to cut equally big checks. But when Team Obama announced raising $43.6 in April, the FEC filings later showed that the campaign raised $25.7 million, the DNC raised $14.3 million, although nearly half of that DNC money came from a transfer from the Obama Victory Fund.

(When Team Obama collects large checks, the first $5,000 go to the campaign, which is the individual maximum; $30,800 go to the DNC, which is the max; and the rest go to the other committees.)

We will not be able to get a campaign vs. campaign or party vs. party comparison on these numbers until June 20, when FEC reports for May are due.

He may have him beat money-wise but Obama will still win the election simply because he's the best man for the job. Mark my words.

No offense Reed, but I hope Team Obama has got something a little more resonating than that to campaign on:)

Remember, Bitch McConnel stated within the first 90 days after Obama got elected, "the the number one thing is to get Obama out of the White House". Yuuuuuuup, you heard it first from Bitch McConnell and 'Boner', so much for partisan politics. 'Go team go'..........for what???

The only way things are going to change in this country is when both parties learn to get along A marriage,a bussines and anything else won't work unless you work together. Personally, I couldn't think of a better way to spend that money than using it to get the current administration out of power. It will save us multiples on our investment.

Our elections are becoming little more than money-raising activities. What ever happened to leaders with vision and drive and concern and empaphy...who could speak the People of this Great Country in straight and honest manners...telling what they stand for and what they want to accomplish? It's all money now. Bribery disquised as potilical contributions.

We NEED campaign reform NOW. No more super pacs. No more outlandish contributions. No more political bribery.

WE are supposed to able to make the decisions regarding who is leading our country...not the big money interests. And that doesn't mean we should be endlessly bombarded with empty promi ses and half truths by candidates whose only goal is to run as many ads as they can...and say nothing.

Winning an election means getting more votes than the other candidate. Remember, the only reason Obama is President is because a whole lot of people that don't normally show at the polls bothered to vote. It’s simple, what matters most is, that we as individuals don't allow the political parties do our thinking…if you think Obama is doing a good job, vote for him…if not, vote for someone else.

And the House is controlled by Republicans, who bend over for the corporations. They have not done thier job plain and simple. A bunch of immature little brats with only one goal in mind, and that is to sabotage an Obama re-election. Instead of actually putting up a good intelligent fight. They couldn't give a crap about the American people.

Maybe people forgot, but it was the Supreme Court that ruled the political parties can raise and spend as much as they want. The ONLY restriction was that it could NOT be foriegn money. With that said, Pres BO has done NOTHING but campaign since he was elected senator in Illinois. He campaigned for being pres while being a senator that ONLY voted present, so as not to piss anyone off. He was never veted by the press or anyone else. Has Pres BO ever balanced anything, even his checkbook? How do you expect a person, so far in over his head, to be able to do anything when has control of both the House and Senate for 2 years? Now, since the Dems have lost control of the House, it is a Rep Congress. They seem to forget that they control the Senate, which has NOT passed a buget in over 3 1/2 years. The Senate even shuts down the buget from Pres BO. This year was 99-0. There are NOT 99 Rep Senators in the Senate. How do the Dems explain this without lying or changing the subject or name calling? Remember the Democratic philoslohy: Do as we say, not as we do. We know how to spend YOUR money better than YOU!

This is exactly what is wrong with this country. Money buys things. The USA is failing and these so called men only care about money, power and being lazy. Looks at how republicans conducted their pitiful selves these last four years and there followers can't wait for them to take over. Our childrens future is dying right before our eyes. Romney is all about money, mormans, money, and misplacing our future. HE IS A CULT MEMBER!

Too much money in elections. I would to see that a candidate can only collect money from registered voters in their district if running for the House, their state if running for the Senate, and only from our country for President. The key part, is that only registered voters can donate. Since PAC's and Corporations are not registered to vote they cannot do anything. Just think no commericals with lie after lie. How refreshing.

My question is this... does it matter how much money our fiends at Citizens United throw at this clown? A bad candidate with a bad plan for the country is exactly that. I'm still waiting for more detail on all of these jobs he plans to create. How is it possible that he has the solution and no one else can think of one? Smells like a spoiled fish to me...

I wonder if Queen Elizabeth donated anonymously? There reason I was thinking of this item was that I realized BO and Michelle had not been invited to the Royal Jubilee (as well as they were not invited to Prince William and Kate's Wedding). It must be killing the Queen not being able to invite any nonroyal heads of state to events because if she does she has to invite the Obamas (noted for their fantastic gift giving and understanding of etiquette, as well as being able to stand back and not jump in front of the lime light every second --- NOT).

If Obama is re-elected which I doubt then he and the Moocher would have a shot at going to the next coronation. I can see the Queen now sending anon checks to Romney's campaign fund just to not have to meet up with the Obamas again.

I was thinking of this when I was watching Jon Stewart's show entitled "The Queen who starred at boats" and realized that the Obamas had not gone to the Jubilee. I am sure she would have invited the Clinton's, the older Bush's, the Reagan's, the Kennedy's, the Ford's, the Carter's, the Johnson's, and etc. (I would put Nixon and the younger Bush in the maybe category).

If you happen to check out that episode of Jon Stewart on line also check out the "polish the t$rd" session regarding Obama that he has posted.

Nothing about this surprises me, for those posting negatives on the income disparities in this country (1%, anti union, pro-republican forces) here's a little tidbit for you. The deregulation you love so much, the lack of oversight on the captains of paper pushing, no value added, no product produced capitalism have left over 100 trillion dollars of fairly worthless Home loan derivative investment stocks on the ledgers of the to big to fail criminals. 55 trillion of that was switched out of Merrill Lynch last year by its owner, BofA, onto its FDIC insured books. What happens if the republicans gain the totality of government, both houses and the presidency, and they enact their ideas of austerity? Could there be a return to recession, a continuation of the home foreclosure crisis, a escalating exposure to those investment instruments going to 0 and the debt being switched over to the National deficit? Think about that, the repubs are screaming about a 16 trillion deficit, one they contributed to greatly, but their plan for our economy could add 10's of trillions to the debt.

The Wisconsin results only mean that 1. people are willing to vvote against their best interests, no surprise there, many voted for Bush even after it was understood that he lied about WMD's, invented a 50 billion sinkhole for the budget in the form of the Department of Homeland Security (small government republican) and cut taxes while we were prosecuting two wars. 2. The multinationals now see a chance to silence any real disent, or opposition by stamping out the Union, the real reason for the big contributions to Walker.

It really doesn't matter to me much, I've watched it going on for over 30 years now and have resigned myself to the demise of the U.S. as a world power, what lies ahead are the ruins of this failed experiment in democracy. The Plutocrats win again.

Not surprising, since Romney has the support of the wealthiest of the rich and the biggest corporations, wheres Obama has the support of the little guy and the working American.

Considering all the billionaires backing Romney, the real story here is that he raised only $77 million.
