Team Romney, RNC announce raising nearly $77 million in May

Just hours after the Obama campaign announced that it, the Democratic National Committee, and other Obama-related committees had raked in $60 million in May, Team Romney said they one-upped them.

Their Romney campaign/Republican National Committee haul: $76.8 million. They also reported having a combined $107 million in the bank for all of their committees.

“We are encouraged by the financial support from a broad range of voters," Romney Victory National Finance Chairman Spencer Zwick said in a statement. "Voters are making an investment because they believe that it will benefit the country.”

But if the financial reports from April are any indication, much of that nearly $77 million is coming in the form of big five-figure checks from large donors.

Around this same time last month, the Romney camp and RNC reported raising a combined $40 million. But when we saw the actual Federal Election Committee filings, it was $11.7 million for the campaign, $11.4 million for the RNC, and the rest -- $17 million -- for the Romney Victory Fund.

The Romney Victory Fund -- which also includes coordination with the state GOPs of ID, MA, OK, and VT -- is the mechanism that allows donors to contribute up to $75,000 each. In mid-May, both Mitt Romney and his wife each contributed $75,000 to the Victory Fund.

There is also an Obama Victory Fund, which allows large donors to cut equally big checks. But when Team Obama announced raising $43.6 in April, the FEC filings later showed that the campaign raised $25.7 million, the DNC raised $14.3 million, although nearly half of that DNC money came from a transfer from the Obama Victory Fund.

(When Team Obama collects large checks, the first $5,000 go to the campaign, which is the individual maximum; $30,800 go to the DNC, which is the max; and the rest go to the other committees.)

We will not be able to get a campaign vs. campaign or party vs. party comparison on these numbers until June 20, when FEC reports for May are due.

Hey Feisty, not sure about you, but I want my guy to raise as much $$ as he can, so long as he's staying within the rules. I care not a bit if it causes fake morale outrage from loons like yourself - actually scratch that, I consider it an added bonus if it get's you fired up.

Let's not anyone forget that candidate Obama said in '07 that he would only use public financing for his campaign........only to change his mind when he realised he could get a crap load more from special interests. But hasn't that been the theme with this guy for 4 years now. Campain on one message, govern on another.

Before you Progressive start making wild accusations, remember $750Million obama raised in 2008? Also, in a free market, if you have a good product(agenda), people will invest in it. America has seen what you leftist have to offer and it is being rejected. First Nov.2010 and now Wisconsin. The Democrats have one slim chance in hades of staying in the White House......Get Hillary to challenge obama.

what freemarket? there is no such thing anymore! As for repub product/agenda- they have none, it's simply called propaganda/fox news (hit people with enough misinformation for long enough & they will believe)& the fact that repubs everywhere no longer work at improviing things for people and this country, but do everything in their power to unseat dems (not work with them). Repubs also have the dumbing of America & ADD on their sides, in making so many think that four years is enough time to clean up the mess they made in 8! (aka:bush/cheny) nuff said!

Of course, by voters, romney means: corporations, our joke of a supreme court assured him of that. As for this story, no surprise about the money- repubs & romney have shown for a long time now, that they are great at taking money away from people (for themselves)

So Romney who has been handed everything in his life will destroy a kid that made himself out of nothing. Harvard law degree, taught constitutional law at Univ of Chicago, but you are right, the mormon will wipe him out because he is bursting with factual knowledge. What a laugher!!!!!

Yea the people of America want a leader they can idolize, someone who'll give them hope that if they take bribes from oil executives and sell millions of jobs to companies over seas they too can be a rich p rick just like Romney

I wonder if Romney will try to bet Obama in the debates? He'll have to increse it to 20K though, the 10K bets are reserved for drugged out governors. LOL

"Romney gets large 5 figure donations". Well of course, corporations own the GOP. The 1% wants confidence that they too can hide hundreds of millions of shore come November. While I am not a big fan of Obama (only voted for him because no intelligent person would ever vote for Sara Palin), but to think that people really believe that a guy who been handed everything in his life is going to fix this counties problems is ludacris!!!! Not to mention that he belongs to a cult. The GOP has failed again to nominate a viable candidate to help this country. So our options are yet again bad, and really bad. Pathetic.

the gop represents business while the democrats represent labor. the problem with those republicans that found themselves in the unemployment and welfare lines or living in tents, is that they will still vote for the republican party, instead of saying thank you to the democrats for fighting to keep life lines available for everyone in the time of need.

for those that no longer get unemployment benefits, this is pure republican initiative policy.

I've been reading these posts for two years now, and it's the same BS day in an day out. Blame President Obama for everything. Where were you all when Dubbya was sending your sons and daughters, into a fabricated war? Where were you when the housing market was crumbling around you? Where were you when this country was bleeding 750K jobs each month? And didn't 911 happen on Bush's watch? I'm an avid President Obama supporter, but here's what I predict will happen. All of you ignorant, uninformed Republicants will usher in a man who will glady take your vote, but has absolutely NO INTENTIONS of fighting for you. How can he? He doesn't know what it's like to be middle class. He was born with a silver spoon in his mouth, avoided the draft, didnt' do much for Mass, and doesn't know anything about anything other than rich, white men. You are more stupid than I think you are if you believe this guy is going to fight for you.

That's your problem. And, the people like you. Quit waiting for someone to "fight for you". Fight for yourself. It's too bad people like you think some schm(u)ck in Washington can control you life, run your business and spend your money better than you can!

P.S. The housing market crumbled because of p(u)tzes like Chris Dodd, Barney Frank, Maxine Waters, Freddie & Fannie. It was Bush that warned us in 2003 of the coming fiasco but Barney Frank told us "everything is fine".

well said. Problem is that the ignorant folks on the right get their facts from entertainers. When someone says that only half of Americans pay taxes they are smart enough to look at the facts and realize the majority of those that do not pay taxes are either, seniors on SS, kids that are not in the workforce or people who are too dirt poor to rub two nickels together. Oh yeah, and the uber rich who hide their money overseas or work every loop hole possible to give NOTHING back to the country they supposedly love so much. The conservatives are so patriotic up until it comes time to pay their fair share. The best thing that could happen to our country this November is if Grover Norquist walks into on coming traffic. then we could have sensible debate about taxes.

Since 2008, the GOP has spanked the Democrats in virtually every nationalized election (with the possible exception of the "all hands on deck" effort to save Harry Reid's job).

Romney is not a perfect candidate, but Americans are in the business of cleaning house right now. Even long time GOPers are not necessarily safe (see Orrin Hatch and Dick Luger). At the end of the day, the Obama campaign was hoping to win this thing on Obama's likeability and the GOPs stance on social issues. Day after day we see this tidal wave coming, and Obama simply isn't slowing it down.

Your kind, the republican scum, seem to be the majority in the population. It was not always the case. But regardless many of the fools voting for the republican party are simply cutting their own throat. But I'm nearly 50 years old and when this nation seperates into two distinct classes, poor and rich, I'll be long since dead. For all you hispanic citizens, who will be in the majority over the next 50 years, I hope you enjoy being poor because the elite republicans of all races will make sure you have no retirement, low pay, and no social security because they will raise the retirement age to 80 and almost all of you will die before then. Enjoy your endentured servitude. As for me I'll be checking out long before then. Goodbye Middle Class!

Their was a time when I thought the Democratic Voters would put these greedy, self centered, republican fools in their place but now I have my doubts. After the Wisconsin voters kept that corupt corporate governor in office I am a little less secure in that belief. To be honest I think the country has swung to far to the right and I'm not sure it will ever change or if it does change it will be long after you and me are dead. I know my daughter who was majoring in education, and hoped to become a teacher, just changed her major to engineering. With low pay, reducing benefits, and no real job security she simply felt teaching was no longer a good job opportunity. She is young and only a sophmore in college so she was lucky enough to be in a position to switch majors. Some students are just to far along in their education and would have to start over. This nation will learn it's lesson. It will take 50 years but we will learn or maybe we won't! With the changing demographics the hispanic population will surpass everone else and maybe we just don't want to educate those folks even though those folks will most certainly be the new American Majority in 50 years. I feel bad for my children and grandchildren but I will be long dead before this nation falls apart under the republican feed the rich policies. In 50 years you will have two distinct America's! You will have the poor and the rich and one will get educated while the other is doomed to meanial jobs. Good Bye Middle Class!

JasonInNYC Europe will recover and eventually out due America in every way. If being a socialisty means I believe folks should have something to look forward to besides working till they die then ok I'm a socialist. I have no issue with being called a socialist. America's day is coming. I'm sad to say it because I love this country but in the end it will fall by the wayside like so many other societies that leave a large number of it's citizens behind. Just because you, scum, republicans are in the majority does not mean a large manority, that disagrees with you in every way, does not exist. Wait until the unfairness gets so deep rooted that it creates violence. It will happen, perhaps not in my life time, but it will happen. Good Bye Middle Class!

Obama truly is the country's Great Destroyer!!!!! Every time he goes out, the Deficit lurches forward to the detriment of our Children and Grandchildren.

Think what a waste of money Holder is, since he has alzhiemers and cannot remember anything. A department head that can't remember? Needs to be replaced. An imbecile could make that decision. Oh, you say he can remember, but he's he's lying? Just what we need a LIAR to head up the Dept of Justice. So much for any hope of Justice, huh?

Just think how that money could actually help real people instead of these stupid politicians who have no care what so ever over people. They only care about themselves and the party. Disgusting. Would love to be able to post a list of what companies/individuals have wasted money giving to campaigns. They should be outed and shunned by society.

Within the last week Romney flew in here to a secured airstrip, not the main airport here, and a caravan of cars took him to the secluded private home of a multi-millionaire farming family. There a fund raising reception was held...$2,500 per person to get in the door, $10,000 to have your picture taken with him & $50,000 to have a private reception. The general public didn't even know he'd been in the area until it was published in the paper the next day. Struck me as almost a hit and run, as he was in town less than three hours, then was on his way to do the same thing in another town. He hit at least three different cities that same day, in the same way.

Now the libturds want to make it legal for 40-50+ year old perverts to seduce and sodomize 17yo boys AND get a tax credit for doing so!

Now that is the party of FAMILY VALUES.
