White House confirms Al Qaeda leader's death

The White House confirmed today that deputy Al Qaeda leader Abu Yahya al-Libi is dead, and called it a “major blow” to the group.

However, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney offered no details on how his death was brought about and avoided other questions about the CIA’s controversial drone program.

Carney said al-Libi's death is "part of the...degradation that has taken place to core Al Qaeda during the past several years.”

Earlier today NBC's Jim Miklaszewski confirmed that al-Libi was killed in a weekend drone strike in Pakistan.

War is hell and I certainly wouldn't want to be on that side of a drone strike!

The president is doing a fabulous job of beating up on our enemies without putting our troops into harm's way. Hurrah for the president for having the political courage it takes to dispose of our enemies wherever they may be, and hurrah for our armed forces for making this possible!

The liberal view of the Law of War and the Constitution regarding islamic Terrorists is "evolving" :

2007: Terrorists captured on the battlefield while planning mass murder cant be questioned or suffer from basic cable TV, they must have HBO. The terrorists must get an ACLU lawyer and a full civilian trial after ten years of appeal, followed by an appearance on Oprah. Any American who asked the terrorist a question, or forgot to serve desert, must be prosecuted and sent to jail.

2009: Obama alone will decide who lives and dies outside the US border; foreigners and US citizens alike; a drone will kill whom Obama decides, and any family member unlucky enough to be near the Obama target.

Yes Bob, and everyone knows that when we put boots on the ground that no innocents die! If we had sent armies after these same men, MANY more would have died. The president is handling this beautifully while keeping our troops out of harm's way. He is making the best use of our technological advantage.

So what say Obama sends some drones down to Gitmo?

Let 'em loose and get rid of the problem?

Or take all the lovely citizens at Gitmo out to the Middle East, give them a 10 minute head start, then release the drones?

Then we can shut down Gitmo and save us all a butt load of money.

you know this entire problem reminds me of reading about dropping the atomic bomb on Japan, some didn't want to drop the bombs at all because the cites we dropped them on where civilian targets, some wanted to drop more bombs, everyone had different views back then, same as today we all have different views.

the fact is yes dropping the atomic bombs kill hundred of thousands of lives, yes thousands more would die from radiation even today there are still traces left, yes they where civilian targets, here is something else to ponder, what if we didn't drop the bombs. well if we didn't we would have had to invade the Japan, the estimated death toll of American troops was to be in the millions, and an untold enemy people would die. so in the end dropping thous bombs actually save more lives in the long run. im not saying it was right or wrong, im just saying it is fact.

my point here is whether we kill these terrorist without risking American lives and risk getting innocents involved by using, or do we send in our troops and let them die and getting innocent people involved. now i know it isnt as black and white as that and there are more factors to it, but essentially this is what it all comes down too in the end

either way innocent people die, that is war. i may sound harsh, but i look at the bigger picture here, and that is, is the job getting done effectively.

I am not going to approve or disapprove the use of drones, i think there could be better ways, but im not in charge, Obama is and right now from what i see at least he is getting the job done. no one can say anything differently.

Pizza Boy- So you're all in favor of blasting these Islamofacists to HELL without a trial or "due process", but put them in prison and you get all upset? You notice a little contradiction there, Perry Mason? I do. I notice that basically, Obama is prez NOW. Bush was prez THEN. This can only mean ONE thing. Your selective approval of when to be mean to terrorists is based ENTIRELY on politics. which means your opinion is friggin' worthless. Big surprise.

Obama hasn't started 2 unnecessary wars, while Drone strikes are morally questionable, at least Obama is getting the job done, in the 8 years of bush administration how many of the Al Qaeda leaders did he kill.

like i have said before i wont approve of or disapprove of the use of drones, i agree that there could be better ways, but right now fact is Obama is getting the job done and that is more then i can say about Bush.

By the way. I am in full favor of killing these A holes anytime, anywhere. I hope they suffer, in fact. I was in favor of doing it when Bush was Prez and I'm in favor of it now. In fact, kudos to Obama for CONTINUING Bush's anti-terrorist policies and, like Bush, IGNORING the pantywaist, bleeding heart, anti-American jackasses who are against sending these vermin to their 72 ugly-ass, hairy, uni-browed virgins.

"Unecessary" is YOUR opinion, Annoyed. Do you have any idea how many THOUSANDS of Islamofacists were slaughtered in Iraq and Afghanistan between 2001 and now? I remember left-wing comedians and late-night talk show hosts ridiculing US fairly regularly because every few months there was news that we had killed "yet another Al Qaeda number 2". And "how many number twos do they have"....and blah blah blah. The difference is then, you, like Pizza Boy, either didn't like it, support it, or ignored it because you let your hatred for Bush get in the way.

Without looking anybody up. I remember Zarqawi or whatever that POS's name was being blown to bits in Iraq. And that was just a name we recognize.

President Obama is getting the job done in a most efficient manner. The right wing chicken hawks are hating it because their M.I.C. cronies aren't getting to sup upon the taxpayer teat.

Personally, Pakistan kept Bin Laden hidden for over 6 years, so now the bill is coming due. Don't like that Pakistan, stop taking our foriegn aid.

Bush and Cheney's war crimes have more to do with Iraq than Afghanistan, but don't let the facts get in the way of your precious little rant.

So, how much intelligence did we get from this guy before Obama offed him?

    I'm guessing none.

It is particularly amazing to watch Obama cult members cheer for their idol choosing who lives and dies- when they have conniption fits when people of the same band of outlaws were dunked in water in an effort to get them to cough up information about their future plans to execute Americans.

You people have the weirdest set of ethics known to man. It's actually pretty frightening that you not only condone, but cheer, whatever Obama does. Thinking like that has never benefited the human race.

I'd tell you to think about that, but it seems to be above the pay grade of the cult members.

it was unnecessary because Bush could have sent in a elite seal team (like Obama) and get all the bastards with out having to send thousands of men to die.

and everyone knows the Iraq war was all about the oil, and the Bush administration falsified claims of WMDs.

that is why they are 2 unnecessary wars in my opinion

The 6th Amendment to our Constitution reads as follows:

In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the State and district wherein the crime shall have been committed, which district shall have been previously ascertained by law, and to be informed of the nature and cause of the accusation; to be confronted with the witnesses against him; to have compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in his favor, and to have the Assistance of Counsel for his defence

So, uh, those Gitmo detainees...they're being denied those rights, yes?

Now, don't get me wrong...I have no problem with seeing another al Qaida member put in a box but if we're going to keep them in a prison it seems we need to follow the law, don't you think?

Which war is that? Last I checked, Congress has to formally declare war and I don't seem to recall them doing so.

...and if there is a war, then perhaps we should continue the argument about torture and violations of the Geneva Conventions.

Let's see - what was it Mitt Romney said at AIPAC a couple months ago?

"Hope is not a foreign policy,” he added. “The only thing respected by thugs and tyrants is our resolve, backed by our power and our readiness to use it.”

And what was Romney's foreign policy plan again?

"I will engage Iran’s neighbors. I will station multiple carriers and warships at Iran’s door."

North Nevada is a barren wasteland. Them jews could come along and turn it into a economic powerhouse, the 51st state.

Look at what they did in Israel - no resources, in the middle of millions that want them dead, and yet their country is 500 times better than all the arab/muslim states combined. Turkey used to be something, but it slides backward every day.

        Spanky,

I know you follow Fast and Furious, so what do you think about the latest information coming out today?

House oversight committee chairman Darrell Issa said Tuesday that congressional investigators now have documents that prove senior officials in Attorney General Eric Holder’s Department of Justice approved gun-walking in Operation Fast and Furious.

“The Committee has obtained copies of six wiretap applications in support of seven wire intercepts utilized during Fast and Furious,” Issa said in a Tuesday letter to Holder.

Issa said those wiretap documents “show that immense detail about questionable investigative tactics was available to the senior officials who reviewed and authorized them.”

Issa said these documents prove that the Department of Justice again provided “false” information to Congress.

Why are we still keeping peace with Pakistan after they have lied once already and now again harboring terrorists? We really do not have to worry about having them as allies as much as we are a nation of peace and democracy. They have proven yet again they cannot be trusted. Stop all trade and moreso, aide to them when they are just not worth it!
