Hey, big spender: Majority of TV ad money going to FL, VA, OH

Obama camp single-biggest spender, but outside conservative groups spent more

So far, for the general election, $108 million has been spent on TV ads by the presidential campaigns and outside groups, according to an analysis by NBC/SMG Delta.

Just 16 states have seen any spending since the end of the GOP primary, and the lion’s share of that has been concentrated in just 10 battleground states.

Nearly $6 out of every $10 spent so far have been in a trifecta of states that could very likely determine the outcome of the presidency – Florida, Virginia, and Ohio.

About 40 percent has been by the Obama campaign.

Here are the 10 states seeing the most spending, through June 5th:

1. Florida $22.1 million
2. Virginia $20.8 million
3. Ohio $19.3 million
4. North Carolina $10.1 million
5. Colorado $7.4 million
6. Iowa $7.4 million
7. Pennsylvania $6.7 million
8. Nevada $6.6 million
9. New Hampshire $4.4 million
10. Michigan $3.4 million

(No other state has seen more than $336,000 spent, the amount spent in New Mexico.)

The biggest spender so far – no surprise – in those battlegrounds is the Obama campaign, with $41.5 million poured into TV. (The Romney campaign has spent $7.4 million.)

But outside conservative groups combined – not including the Romney campaign -- have outspent the Obama campaign there with $49.6 million.

Here’s how the spenders break down:

1. Obama $41.5 million
2. Crossroads GPS $24.5 million
3. Americans for Prosperity $13.3 million
4. Priorities USA and Priorities/League of Conservation Voters $8.2 million
5. Romney $7.4 million
6. America’s Future Fund 4.5 million
7. Restore Our Future $4.1 million
8. American Energy Alliance $3.2 million
9. Planned Parenthood $1.4 million

Why do we tolerate the spending of these obscene amounts of cash on TV, radio, etc when in reality, people change the channel, turn it off, DVR fast forward through it......This money could serve much better purposes anywhere in society that you would care to look. Do I blame the contributors....not really, because they must really believe in what they are promoting to contribute to it so heavily and try to get other people to agree with their viewpoints. But I do think that this sort of thing is part and parcel of what has corrupted our political system and our politicians who do not think in terms of real policy, but how to present the glitziest image possible and appeal to the greatest number of people possible.......Our election process has turned into a national prom king and queen competition as if none of the voting populace has moved beyond high school and addressed the issues facing us in the real world. Why is it that we aren't rebelling against the process that he people more focussed on how they appear, instead of how they perform for their constituents.

freedom of speech - sometimes - equals freedom of misinformation.

People are not easily fooled - you hear what you want to hear.

Besides, such massive spending can be just another set of stimulus spending - cash for clunkers. But regular folks won't benefit - only the 1% members in the media business.

Thank you SCOTUS for opening the flood gates...

Actually .... Thank you SCOTUS for somewhat leveling the playing field.

Somebody had to do something about the $400 million to Obama from the unions and union boss cronies..

Well, as of two minutes ago, he's at least $30 closer and I've got a new t-shirt coming in the mail - thanks for asking! By the way, I have never belonged to a union in my life, much to my late union president father's chagrin.

Feisty--I don't understand how the conservatives don't seem to be able to differentiate between individuals raising money with a set of laws, which we had in 2008 and the situation today in the aftermath of the Citizens United decision where it is clear that individuals are donating hundreds of millions of dollars to influence elections. Not to mention the money being donated that we don't know where it comes from.

Cutting spending on education does not necessarily mean cutting funding in the classroom. Our school districts have become catch all institutions, often far removed from the actual teaching of students. We have made them soup kitchens, feeding as many as three meals per day to students in some districts, while our taxes duplicate and pay for food stamps for the parents to purchase nutritious meals....How many nutritious meals does any person need, particularly in a society screaming about obesity, overeating, distorted portion sizes.....If the consensus is that the parents don't feed their children at home, or send lunches to school, then stop giving the parents money for food. If the parents are feeding their kids, then why does the school duplicate it for free? That is only one example, and yet if anyone suggest that we cut the free breakfast/lunch/dinner, or that we cut back on food stamps, we are haters of children.....In many instances, there is pure waste here. Cafeteria personnel will tell you that in most school cafeterias 60% or more of this nutritious food finds its way into the wastebarrels uneaten. And then there is the social service aspect of schools-layers and layers of counselors, social workers, school nurses-before and after school care programs to keep kids off the streets. Aren't parents responsible to keep their kids off the streets? We have armies of janitorial staff, some so specialized that they only buff floors, or change light fixtures and bulbs.....We are paying for armies of people that have little to do with actual education...and we are paying through the nose for their "services" due to union agreements.

And among those Independents a net +2 points for Romney.

But how about the women … where Obama has a 29 point lead versus the men where he trails by 18 points.

Then there is the pesky white versus non-white … where Obama leads by 52 points or more in every income range among non-whites and Romney leads by less than 20 points in every income range among whites.

Overall it looks like an advantage for our President.

Dennis, did you really not understand what you were reading?

Let me spell it out for you:

Among all middle class earners polled, Romney leads Obama by four points among those earning over $36,000- which is broken down as those earning between $36,000 and $89,999, and those earning over $90,000. Four point Romney leads with both groups.

Breaking it down further, Obama does lead among non-white middle class earners- by fifty five points among those earning between $36,000 and $89,999, and by fifty two points among those earning over $90,000. However, Romney leads among whites earning between $36,000 and $89,999 by nineteen points, and by fourteen points among those earning $90,000 or more. In fact, Romney leads by ten points among whites earning less than $36,000.

Among I dependents, Romney leads Obama by eight points among those earning between $36,000 and $89,999; the two are tied among those earning $90,000 and over.

Obama's leads with middle class women are nothing to write home about- he has a three point lead among women earning between $36,000 and $89,999, and a nine point lead among women earning over $90,000.

That 38 point lead Obama supposedly has with women that you love to cite so often seems to have been an anomaly. It has never been repeated in any poll I've seen since. Probably poor weighting on the part of the pollsters.

Romney is building a solid lead among the middle class, and it will continue to grow as the election gets closer.

As always, a liberal holds the lead in segments of the population who fear that their benefits, their free ride, their assistance will cease if they dare disagree with the administration. This isn't just buying votes, but it is extorting them and akin to blackmail. Instead of offering real opportunity to move forward and improve life, the liberals offer you a minimum wage job (called job growth), part time, no benefits, no vacation-all the while telling you how big business is getting fat off your efforts. Now when minimum wage isn't enough, then we have a host of government programs to supplement the working poor, and with each program, you are brought farther into the dependency that should insure that you vote continually in favor of the hand that feeds you.....It is not liberating, but rather voting based upon fear. I don't seriously believe that the founding fathers ever anticipated that votes could be extorted, and that assistance (which should be motivated by altruistic goals-making things better for the individual and the community) would be the cudgel of blackmail.

And if Obama would spend even a fraction of his time focused on the economy as he does golfing and/or fundraising we just might be at the 6% number he promised us with the stimulus.

Yeah, I remember back in '09 and '10 when Obama had huge majorities in the House and Senate and could do whatever he wanted.

Too bad he did want to try to fix the economy, eh Amy?

Amy, businesses are the absolute LAST group that wants to see unemployment at 4%. When it's that low, the pool of candidates is 'slim pickins' at best (supply and demand). And it's not just tax breaks they want protected - it's the regulations they want eliminated that inhibit their ability to make the biggest profit off the backs of each of their employees.

      No it wouldn't.

Companies would still have the 21 new tax increases associated with Obamacare, they would still have rising fuel and energy costs (soon to be exploding if Obama wins another term), they would still have tens of thousands of new pages of regulations, they would still have the uncertainty associated with rising asinine debt ..... how many do you need?

Nope .... the only way for the country to recover - to get unemployment around 4% - is for them is to invest their money in getting rid of this epic failure of a president.

Because President Obama has turned around our country that was bleeding millions of jobs, and now we have had months and months of job growth but for this he is a epic failure.

The policies that we are recovering from are the very same policies that Romney wants to return too. The republicans don't want to mention bush they just want to go back to his policies.

First the republicans voted for a huge deficit and recession on purpose and now they want us all stupid enough to vote for another republican recession on purpose to pay for more tax cuts for Romney.

They convinced Bob that destroying America for the rich is now his ideal of success. Then he wants us to think he is smarter than the average sucker that the republicans use.

Bob, research it, I did and there was no recession that bush inherited. That was just the excuse the republicans used to go for the tax cuts.

We can't blame bush for the proven bad economy he left, but you want to go back and blame President Clinton for the lies that bush and the republicans told after they got into office.

Wow, what a good republican sucker you are.

It is good to see so many people contributing to the election of a better leader in 2012. The amount spent on defeating Obama is a pittance compared to the damage done to our economy due to his poor policy decisions the previous 3.5 years. We can't afford another 4 years of entitlement expansion. We haven't even gotten the full bill for Obamacare yet. Jeeeesh.

If you had any brains you would see the stimulus turned around our economy. Even though our economy is growing slowly, it is growing in the right direction.

In England where they did basically put the republicans policies in place and are now facing another recession.

Republicans make the claim that President Obama is trying to make us like Europe and their failures when it is actually the republicans austerity policies that have caused the failures in Europe.

Europe is now looking at stimulus plans for Europe as our country is doing better than the rest of the world due to our stimulus.

But you keep repeating the lying republican talking points as if the lies alone will turn around our economy.

There is no war on business. And Romney is not pro-business he is pro-rich.

Romney wants to take food out of the mouths of children for more tax cuts for himself. Is that pro-business or anti-Americans?

Romney want to take care away from our wounded veterans for more tax cuts for himself. Is that pro-business or anti-Americans?

Romney would take health care away from your sick grandmother for more tax cuts for himself. Is that pro-business or anti-Americans?

Republicans are now so concerned about the deficit they voted into existence and how it will affect your grand-kids and yet don't seem to worry at all that these same grand-kids will need clean air to breathe and clean water to drink if we are to survive as a planet. The republicans want to kill the EPA and then pretend they care about our future of our children.

A sucker born every minute and all of them are voting for a republican to destroy America for the rich 1%.

Obama had a democrats majority his first 2yrs but that majority was constantly nullified by the intransigent blockage by the minority welding filibuster used to block progress. I remember no other than Gen. Colin Powell advising that Obama should slow down his many legislation's being introduced. But each one of them was filibuster to death. Even health care escaped by the whiskers. Brown election in Mass almost derailed it. Jobs, jobs, jobs election sales by the GOP ended up being post office naming and women womb investigations by the GOP after they tricked the people to bring them back to work with our POTUS. What happened to the job infrastructure bill submitted by the president? Did the GOP act on it? America is the only place in the world where the minority not only can have it say but deny the majority its way as it pleases. So why elect a majority if it can not govern within its set objectives and a minority that cannot pass any bills on its own?

Republicans will never agree to get rid of the citizens united decision that is their tool for gaining permanent control of our government. The republicans are not interested in democracy they are only interested in control.

Citizens united is their tool for destroying the voice of the people and replacing it with the propaganda of the rich.

For republicans it is all about protecting the rich and nothing about protecting America. We couldn't pass the jobs act because we can't ask the rich to invest or even be patriots in their own country. Republicans would rather see communist China get rich on our American interest dollars than ask the rich in our own country to be American patriots like we have done in past wars.

Add that to the fact that the republicans are protecting the job creators that have send our jobs to China. While the republicans have created a strong Chinese economy, they have destroyed the economy in America.

Vote for a strong Communist Chinese economy, vote for a republican.

Isn't it clear by now that GOP/Romney can outspend Obama/DNC without breaking a sweat. Obama is having to spend precious resources early and often while the GOP and PACS have guys who write million dollar checks every day. Remember Ricketts of TD-Ameritrade? After his Rev. Wright campaign idea blew up, he just writes another check for $10 million to fund another ad campaign. Every dollar that Obama and the DNC spend on him is a dollar less that can be spent on Democrat House and Senate candidates. The GOP on the other hand has unlimited resources. The Kochs have already announced that they will spend $370 million into the 2012 campaigns.

Shocker here. I'm very uncomfortable with all this PAC money in the elections. I am a conservative and I am 100% behind Romney because he is everything a President should be(I don't believe the crap being said about Bain and I have researched his actual record as Governor and find him to be a very competent leader).

That said, I believe this is too much power for the few to have even though I agree with them politically.

I can see where Betty White might sway some votes, but I don't think George Clooney and Robert De Niro have that much clout. And while these Hollywood guys are rich (and we can throw in Alec Baldwin) but they are not on the list of richest Americans, then income is not constantly increasing, and they don't own vast financial and manufacturing assets like the Kochs, Trump or Sheldon Adelson. I think when you really need to worry is if you see Big Bird wearing the Obama button. Now that's impact.

Don't say what about Bush. Bush was never this disrespected and he TANKED THE ECONOMY, and let President Chaney and the NeoCons talk him into a War of Destruction on our young men and women in the Military, which NONE of the Kids will ever fight and the total destruction of the Iraqis and their families.

The Democratic Congress made an attempt to work with him on some things good for the Country. The Republican Congress is doing EVERYTHING AND TOTAL OBSTRUCTION to the DETRIMENT OF THE COUNTRY because of total HATRED, mostly wrapped in Racism and Bigtry to Defeat this President.
