Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell, a potential vice presidential pick for GOP nominee Mitt Romney, admitted Sunday morning President Barack Obama deserved slight credit for helping his state survive the economic crisis.
Appearing on CNN’s “State of the Union” as a surrogate for the presumptive GOP nominee, Gov. McDonnell said that federal assistance helped Virginia in the short term.
“Did it help us in the short run with health care and education spending to balance the budget? Sure. Does it help us in the long term to really cut the unemployment rate? I'd say no. But we have done a lot of things,” he said.
McDonnell, acknowledging his state has the lowest unemployment rate in the Southeast, said just to imagine, however, “how much better we'd do if we had President Romney.”
Two days before Wisconsin voters will decide whether to recall Gov. Scott Walker, McDonnell – who is also the chairman of the Republican Governor’s Association -- expressed his confidence that Walker would prevail. That vote, McDonnell pointed out, has similarities with the upcoming presidential election in November.
“It's going to be the same thing with Romney and Obama. As you put policies in place, were they controversial? Sure. Does it take guts and leadership to tell people we can't afford to do these things anymore and we need to change to be more competitive in Wisconsin? Sure. But (Walker has) done it. Now he's getting the results,” McDonnell said. “And that's why he's going to win -- people that might not have liked the reforms are seeing that they're working.”
In typical fashion this cycle, the Virginia governor did not give a straight answer when asked if he was being vetted by Gov. Romney as a possible No. 2.
“They have asked for my schedule to see where I can help them next, and it's going to be in Virginia,” McDonnell said. But when asked whether the Romney campaign has specifically asked for any vice president papers, he dodged: “No, I'll leave all that up to Mitt Romney. But I'm going to help him win Virginia.”
Gov. McDonnell will speak at the end of the week in Chicago at CPAC, the Conservative Political Action Conference.

Obama deserves credit for bringing the recession to a stop and beginning to turn it around with the help of the previous Congress. The current Congress, being controlled by the caustic confrontational TEA party, has done nothing to help Obama. Just think how great the economy would be if the House and Senate would work with Obama. The opposition party is controlled by the Treacherous Adversarial Egotist(TEA) party members, who have matured and mutated to using (R) rather than (T) when they run for office.
Obama inherited two unfunded wars and the tax give-away while America continues to lose jobs since 9-11. Obama is not the one managing the economy, the 112th Congress holds that title. The Congress is responsible for legislating jobs production, Tax legislation and approving the presidential appointments - Chapter one of any government book unless changed by the Texas textbook commission and used across the entire nation.
Bob McDonnell double spoke when asked questions about being vetted or anything closer to becoming Romney's V.P.
TEA-Republicans want to shut down Entitlement Programs like:
Home Mortgage
Interest Deduction
Hope or Lifetime Learning Tax Credit
Student Loans
Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit
Earned Income Tax Credit
Social Security
Retirement & Survivors
Pell Grants
Unemployment Insurance
Veterans Benefits
G.I. Bill
Medicare
Head Start
Social Security
Disability
SSI--Supplemental Security Income
Medicaid
Welfare/Public Assistance
Government
Subsidized Housing
Food Stamps
Remember Romney's own words when you vote:
"Corporations are people my friend"
"I like being able to fire people"
"I'm not concerned about the very poor"
"I have some great friends who are NASCAR owners"
Wow - the lib talking points in one post! Cool. Still voting Romney. Sorry.
Sorry? You probably will be, if he wins.
Honest to god -
You actually believe all of that? That the republicans, and specifically tea partiers, want to do away with home mortgages? And the government? The mortgage interest deduction? The republicans want to do away with retirement? And student loans?
I do honestly try to avoid attacks on the person writing a post, and instead concentrate on the content of the post, but you make this very difficult.
I will be very kind then when I say this - you sir (or ma'am) are at minimum a fool. I also question your ability to comprehend the issues at hand.
On the bright side, though, you do win both of my awards for the day - the chuckle of the day, because as both parties said, you did sum up the lib talking points - in a comical fashion.
You also win my prestigious "Oh god - you actually get to vote" award
Sincerely - congratulations
We honestly believe they want to make all these programs capitalist programs. Not sure how that is going to work out.
Sheila -
With respect, that is an entirely different thought than what I responded to, which was the thought that republicans/tea partiers want to entirely do away with them.
I also am not certain how that would work out, but I do know for sure that if nothing is done about the spending/revenue issues, our current problems will look like a pleasant summer day picnic.
notalkingpoints thats what the tea party /repugs said better watch what they say, they don't even sugar coat it anymore.Just say bend over.
There has been several articles in the last year-DC is booming. There has been a big carry over into Virginia. Under Obama we have had major expansions in government, up to 25%, WHILE THE PRIVATE SECTOR SHRANK.
Obama's stimulus saved his union buddies and kept afloat GM when it should of gone into bankruptcy. Teachers, firemen and government jobs were kept in place but no REAL ECONOMIC GROWTH RESULTED. It just kept the ever growing government going. And all the czars and new agencies out of DC benefit people working in DC and living in Virginia.
You can say thats great but there are only so many taxpayers to pay for it. Our country's debt is staggering and without TRUE ECONOMIC GROWTH who will pay for it?
Our kids and their kids and their kids and their kids because this Country has gone mad. Pure fiscal insanity by the Amateur.
Hell I say start a ton more printing pressess and screw it - give everyone 100K! More maybe! I mean, if we can save a teacher's job and she is paid 55K a year and it cost 72K to save it we can do that all day and it will work.
Right? You can buy my vote Obama. 100K Just send me a check!
What class this Republican shows - during a time when we have a person in the whitehouse willing to lie at the drop of a hat, blames EVRYONE but himself for his own f&ck ups, tries to take credit for taking out a terrorist when he had about as much to do with that as he did putting a man on the moon. This Republican govenor gives some credit to obama - obama deserves neither this kind of respect or honesty
Good for you! Now we know you work with the burden of room temperature IQ.
I"ll be voting for Obama because the Tea Party and the religious right scare me (especially the religious right). They claim to be for small government but they want to dictate personal behavior......they wouldn't dream of regulating corporations so stay the hell out of the lives of private citizens you crazy b*stards!!
Maybe if each and everyone of us incorporated, the TP would leave us alone.
okiejoe, inc.

The Science of Fox News: Why Its Viewers are the Most Misinformed
Authoritarian people have a stronger emotional need for an outlet like Fox, where they can find affirmation and escape factual challenges to their beliefs.
ha ha ha ha LMAO ha ha ha stop it your killing me ha ha ha. Better come up with a new plan for 2016 because our other hero Hillary will finish off what hero number one started. Mr Obama Sir, Mr Biden Sir we thank you for caring enough for America to protect us from the Joke party!!!!! We love Barack, Michelle, Sasha, Malia,
Joe, and Jill. PS Don't make Bo ride on the roof of the car!!!!!!
I must have missed your point, because I saw not a single accomplishment listed.
A non sequiter about Newt Gingrich, yes. A qoute from an anti fox news piece, yes.
Yet another tired reference to a dog on a roof top, yes.
If this is the best you can do, then perhaps you might want to try another site to post on - I even have a suggestion for that.
My understanding is that Bert and Ernie from Sesame Street have a new news site - oriented for the very young. Give that one a try, and when you are not being laughed at there you might want to try this one again.
OK I will give Obama credit............Obama has destroyed the Economy and the job market..........By the way in Obama's own words he said a few months ago. "WE OWN THE ECONOMY"
Perfect example of someone who can not face reality. Refuses every real fact and does it proudly. A true Republican Soldier. Follows and doesn't question what he is told. Just keeps on marching to the Conservative talking points. Facts have no purpose for a soldier of the conservatives.
That was a well-spun headline for Obama lovers. That made me LOL!
There are fewer Federal Workers today than when President Obama took office. States as well have cut State Workers and most have taken pay cuts as well. Only the Military has sean there pay go up.
I think you hurt some Republican eyes and hears with this truth. True and these foot soldiers can't face a real fact. They have to feed on the breast of Limbaugh.
don-72 - Let me help you out here. Keep in mind I've voted 3rd party since 1984.
Congress controls who is hired by appropriating the funds in the budgets they pass. The Democrats had control of Congress from 1962 to 1980, from 1987 to 1994, and from 2007 to 2010. There were split controlled Congresses from 1981 to 1986 and 2001 to 2002, but in all those years the Democrats in the House controlled the spending. The only years the Republicans controlled Congress were from 1995 to 2000 and 2003 to 2006. Virtually every year the Republicans had control of Congress the employment dropped or remained within a few thousand, but during control by the Democrats you will find the big increases. In 18 of the Democrat controlled years there were increases, it only happened 3 times in Republican controlled years.
So now you know why the federal workforce has decreased since Obama took office. And don't forget the average Federal worker now makes much more than the private work force person doing the same job.
So why was the budget nearly balanced during Clinton's second term? Because he lived in reality having been a governor of a conservative state, and went along with budget-balancing policies the conservatives proposed. He even approved tax cuts which resulted in one of the biggest growth periods in US history. Good for him. Obama, on the other hand, is an ideologue and does not live in reality. Consequently when his policies fail, he pushes them even more and blames everyone else for his failure.
You mean you voted for Ross Perot, and will admit it in public? Thanks for playing.
There are 4 things the Republican TeaBilly Conservatives can’t stand: Anyone who disagrees with them, Da Middle Class, Da Facts, and Da Truth. You Bet Cha…Fer Sure.
Don’t worry Folks, the Republicans Tea Billy Conservatives are going to Focus on the Economy and Job Issues, just as soon as they solve those really Important Social Issues like Gay Marriage, Babies, and Gawd . You Bet Cha….Fer Sure
Mitt is about as real as a “Plastic Banana”.
Is it Mitt ______________Romney.
“Country Club”
“Profits Over People”
“Not To Much…Out of Touch”
“Corporations are People Too”.
“F” da Poor
"Let Detroit Go Bankrupt"
“Pray da Gay Away”
Mitt “Profit Over People” Romney Solution to all Problems…….Prayer and a Moment of Silence.
I actually feel bad for you - your level of illiteracy is equalled only by your obvious ignorance.
For the record, only one of your qoutes is actually accurate, and that one qoute is a factual statement, according to the Supreme Court.
Next time, try actual qoutes, and you might want to think about them in terms of being in context.
Or are you so much the hill billy that actual facts disturb you?
talkingpoints, explian why this comment is low? It simple but true. Romney is a puppet. Come on! Admit it. He even looks like a puppet. Just a fact! If you are having trouble understanding this comment, grow a sense of humor.
So what would you do without the Evel Corperations, to have a job to go to?
Yes, Corperations are people too. They are run by people, people invest in them, and they employ people. So unless they were all taken over by computers.
Yes, Profits for the people. that means the owners, the shareholders, and the workers. Without profit, non would get any money.
Detroit, (meaning the Car Companies) should have been alowed to go Bankrupt. It would have saved the US taxpayer Billions of dollars, Both GM and Chrysler would have both come out of it by now, probably a little smaller, leaner and better equiped to handle the future. Now Chrysler after being sold off to Fiat is showing a large profit. Meanwhile (GM= Govenments Motors choice) is still bleeding and its profit is half of Chrysler's. Boy can the Government pick the winners. Hopefully the stock can double in price so the taxpayers can get back what they paid for it. (maybe someone with a little businees since would have come in handy here?)
Profit means Jobs, without profits there can be no jobs. Unless you are the Govenment that can take other peoples money and use it to create a job costing half a billion dollars.
And how is Obama's Tax the rich (meaning anyone who makes money) and his community organizing skills come in handy. The only state skill he is using is his "Present" voteing before his vacations.
Drunk on Republican....Talking Points Micheal? That's all you typed. Hot wind and no substance.
Whatthe -
It is not a lack of my comprehension, or a lack of a sense of humor.
Try doing this - go back to the original post, and count up the actual qoutes that are presented as qoutes and count how many are actually real, or attributable to Romney.
If your answer is more than one, I will be extremely surprised. This despite it being presented as qoutes, and therefore factual. That is why the comment is wrong, not a fact.
I also never called the comment low, but thanks for putting words in my mouth for me.
To address one other thing, I would prefer a candidate other than Romney, as I happen to agree that Romney has some fairly puppetlike appearances. However - given a choice between Romney and President Obama, I will take Romney.
""notalkingpoints"", sorry have to use two sets of quotation marks for your name. The reason I'm replying in short is because I'm actually doing several other things like laundry and cooking dinner. Giving the wife a break. Ah look. I just mentioned another topic Republicans hate: Women not barefoot, pregnant and in the kitchen.
What the -
No worries - I can appreciate that you are busy, and could in no way blame you on that.
I would disagree with you on the idea that republicans hate women not bound into the roles of the 30s or 40s, though - at least not extremist republicans. Personally, I respect the fact that you are spending an evening giving your wife a break - in my eyes, that is a plus in your column in my my eyes.
I dont actually hate much of anybody - in fact, even though we obviously disagree on many things, I respect that you have replied to me, in an honest and generally respectful way. I have tried to return answers in kind to you, as best as I can.
Peace to you and your family, and have a good dinner.
300michael: Who was going to pick the bones of the former car makers? NO ONE HAD ANY MONEY OR RESOURCES. There would have been nothing to come out of bankruptcy.
Try looking up Bob Lutz, a staunch republican who supports what Obama did.
I can imagine how much better off the RICH would be in Virginia with fascist romRICH. The poor and middle class would be turned into the peasant class and slaves for the RICH to exploit and use serving them.
Ah yes, obviously the RICH would be better off with"fascist from rich" - whatever the heck that means....
And of course the obvious republican goal is to turn everybody not rich into peasants and "slaves" to exploit and "use serving them".
It is good that you can imagine these things, since reality has absolutely nothing to do with either of your assertions, so you have to imagine them
By the way, just for your information, since you appear to be a bit short on current events- slavery has been illegal since roughly 1860 (not sure of the exact year).
Try logic, reason, and reality next time.
It would be a change for them, at least they wouldn't have to wait hours in line for food stamps, getting their homes take away, paying higher utility costs. They would have a job to go to.
300Micheal, you are showing prooff that Republicans are against freedom and rights. Very un-American of you.
The Top 10 Poorest States in the U.S. are Republican States. Do you ever hear the Republicans talk about the Poor or Poverty in those States? The answer is “Never”. It just so happens most of those States are in the South and have “Right To Work Laws”. How’s that working out for ya?
And here is da Real Kicker: All those Republican Politicians in those States have Good Salaries, Health Care, Pension, Vacations, and all kinds of Special Perks……paid for by our “Tax $$$$”. Hmmmmm.
The most impoverished state is Mississippi, and it's followed by Arkansas, Tennessee, West Virginia, Louisiana, Montana, South Carolina, Kentucky, Alabama and North Carolina.
Lets break this down in Simple terms. Republican TeaBilly Conservative = Self Righteous Hypocrite.
Poverty can mean you can live well for less there. Housing, food, utilities all cost less so you don't need to make as much money to live at the same rate as one would in Mass. NY, NJ, we are doing quite well thank you. The Democrats are much worse though. Nancy P. touts Womens rights and such but pays here house woman workers $26,000 less then her male counterparts. Obamas cabinate officials can dodge there income taxes, until they get appointed to their Washington jobs, then and only then do they pay their taxes. Bonny Frank tax evasion scandle is only pushed under the floor, (anyone else doing it would be in prison). Also you noticed that the Federal stimulas funds were given out in much smaller amounts to those Republican states. I suspect much of the additional money given to the Democrat states will return in the form of Obama election funds. If the Tea Party people are Hypocrites, then the Democratic followers are not only Hyprocrites, but immoral, ignorant.
What did McDonnell mean Virginia's budget was balanced? Our budget is not balanced at all and most of the credit for our economy should go to the good Democratic Governor's that came before him.
It is the State house and Senate chambers that should get the credit for ballanceing budgets not the Governer, unless he cuts it more. The same goes for the Federal Government. The House and Senate make the budget (except for our Senate which hasn't for the past 3 years),
Washington is the one place that never had go go on a budget. Jobs, wages, homes, never went down like the rest of the country. Virginia and Maryland get most of the overflow due to there proxcimity to Washington. Democrats write the rules, so they can change them to suit their ever changing ideals. One of the reasons I liked Republicans is if a Republican is caught of wrongdoing they get canned. (Nixion, Trent, Newt) are some examples. Democrats can do illegal things and say (in some cases get promoted) anyting they want and say in office. (Clinton, Frank, Kennedy). I figure at least most Republicans still have moral values. The Second things are the terms they use. Democrats call "Cuts" spending increases that do not meet the amount they wanted. and "Racist" is used for any one that disagrees with them in principal. The Term "Fair" is used when unequal treatment is wanted for different groups.
Dead wrong and spun to make you Republican the poor poor victims. Your satement is full of pathetic cries as you reverse the whole story. Give us a break!!!
whatthe -
would you like to point out the exact inaccuracies in 300's post?
Or is the only inaccuracy that you disagree with him?
Who's in charge of the house?
If Republicans still have moral values, what was pointed out? I believe guilty guilty guilty.
What the -
Fair enough - I will give you the morality charge, and actually agree with you on that one, with the proviso thrown in that the dems are equally guilty of immoral behavior over the same period of time.
The more central point to the original post was that Republicans who get caught doing immoral things tend to get "canned", whereas with certain exceptions the democrats do tend to have a record of doing the exact opposite.
I will grant you that this is a generalisation, but still, roughly true.
As far as who is in charge of the House, allow me to direct you to the last 30 years or so, or if you prefer to go back to the time of Nixon, call it 50 years. Give or take a session or two, seems like that is about even, so your question is sort of not an issue at all for the purposes of this debate.
I never said there wasn't scum in the Democratic Party. I just hate the fact I have to concentrate on how crazy Republicans have become. It's overshadowing many Democrats criticism of their own party. Trust me, there was a time I could hate both parties. Now, Republican have become so extreme and dangerous that who wouldn't keep an eye on them?
what the -
I would contend that the Republicans are actually no more extreme at this point than the democrats, as a general truth.
I would agree that we all need to keep an eye on the politicians - all of them, regardless of party. It is perhaps unfortunate that 24/7 news coverage has polarised the situation far more than any group of politicians ever could have, and that talking opints have replaced logic and thought. I hate talking points. In my view, talking points are the worst possible form of logic, and one of the most misleading things that currently exist in politics.
Thus my chosen name - I hate talking points, and consider them to be the worst possible alternative to actual thought that currently exists. They only conceal the lies from both sides, in canned sound bites that only serve to mislead.
Thank you for saying out loud that there are bad politicains on both sides - I do truly appreciate that.
You might not believe this, and I would understand, that I try to assign blame where it actually belongs, rather than resorting to partisan opposition to anything.
You sir, come across as reasonable, once a discussion is entered in to - thank you for that.
notatalking, Democrats are not spending their time findings to alienate themselves or spead an atmosphere of hate, fear, intolerance and distrust. Pure Republican tactics you and every other Republicans can not hide from.
From 02/17/2009 to 03/31/2012 the state of Virginia has received $4,885,110,000 in Federal Stimulus money while creating allegedly 3865 jobs. More money is scheduled to be sent in the future. So I believed Virginia got a little more than "a little help" from the President. Every state in the Union has received Stimulus money, although Wyoming only $500,000.00,+ as the lowest. Florida, $8 Billion plus and Texas $13 billion plus, yet these are the states, along with many others, including Oklahoma, whose politicians do nothing but complain about Federal interference. They want the money but not the responsibility to show how it's spent, like most Republicans. Source, Recovery.gov
This is the biggest waist. Why send money to the Federal Government so that can send it out to the States, with orders on how it can be spent? The problem is the FG gives out this money and then when it is used up the states have to keep the projects going with no more money. The Federal Government should get out of the Schools (get rid of the department of education) and since the state collects the property taxes for the schools at the state level, let them keep it instead of shipping it to Washington to get skimmed off, then sent back to the states with all the rules attached, The Federal Government should have a uniform standard for all states in terms of education. but it ends there. The Same goes for the Gas Tax for roads, and such. The Republicans believe the States should deturmin where the money is spent, not some desk jockys in Washington.
At least e is honest and not partisan!
Here's a nice reality check:
California is closing a lot of state parks this summer due to lack of funds. Ironically, a family member, who is a tea party supporter and all out follower and a co-worker who is also a tea party drone, both are complaining that they have to cancel their long planned vacations to these parks. They want something done about. Go figure. A little off topic but you get the point.
Folks all ya Heard from da TeaBilly’s for the past few years is:
We want our Country Back.
We Cleaned up or Rally really Nice.
Now all ya hear is:
Anybody but Obama.
It Shows ya how they have no Leadership, Direction, Solutions or Substance and have Lowered all Expectations and Standards.
You Bet Cha….Fer Sure.
I live in Virginia and the whole state is not full of federal workers as some that live in other states believe. Virginia is a large state. While I didn't vote for Governor McDonnell, and don't agree with all his policies he has done a great job for the entire state. It is nice to see him give credit where credit is due unlike the rest of the GOP.
shhhhh, gov. don't let the tea pottiers hear you give Obama any credit for anythng. Their whole purpose is to put him out of office.
I'm sure by tomorrow, they'll find even more ways to spin his statement to sound much different than reality.
You have the say th egov of Virginia is a classact, even though his policies such as mandastory ultra sound tests for pregnat women are beyyond the frince of american medicine today. Most of the governor's recocord in Virginas is more severe than Rmney's.
Also int was interesting heaslth care was mention, butnot Romneycare and the payment for abortins under Romney care-a signifincat ommision. And where was mention of Romney signing 189 gay mairriagew oicenses up north? Or the gay foriegn policy spokeman that was forced to step down that was the public face of the campaign..
Clearly the governor over looked a lot.
Two administrations had balanced budgets. Carter and Clinton. Both of those Presidents had Congress working for the good of the country. Great things happened. Horrible things are happening now because Congress is not working for the people. Nothing is getting done. If Congress worked in the real world they all be fired for doing nothing.
Attention all Politicians: It's the Economy and Jobs Stupid. Time to get your feet off the desk, put the coffee and paper down, lean forward, throw the Lobbyist out of the office and focus!
Here is a start. Let's eliminate the Greed, Corruption, Waste, Mismanagement in the Government and quit giving away Billions of $$$$$$$$$ to Foreign Countries just to be our "Little Friend". “Pakistan”…Did they ever Apologize for Hiding out Bin Laden?
The Simple Solution to Social Security and Health Insurance. You make every Politician have what we have to go thru. Not the Separate Special Perks they have strictly for themselves. They would solve those issues immediately.
Those that can afford not to live on Social Security should “Opt Out” and get a “Tax Deduction”.
Half of all money raised by Politicians should go towards the National Debt and Charity. Why don't we "Tax" the Millions of dollars that they collect for their Campaigns? (Including Super PAC’S).
What's wrong with this guy? Doesn't he know good republicants don't allow this President credit for anything. Trust me, Governor, the President has done way more good than he has bad....and under very adverse conditions.
