Romney: Jobs report a 'harsh indictment' of Obama's policies

Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney talks about today's bleak jobs report, repealing Obamacare and his role in private equity.

SAN DIEGO -- Mitt Romney declared May's disappointing jobs report a "harsh indictment" of President Obama's stewardship of the economy, accusing the president of being overly focused on "legislative achievements" instead of putting Americans back to work.

"The president's policies and his handling of the economy has been dealt a harsh indictment," Romney said in an interview on CNBC. "In many respects their policies have made it harder for the economy to recover."

Romney scheduled the appearance in reaction to a new government report on Friday that showed the economy added 69,000 jobs in May -- well below expectations -- and that the unemployment rate had ticked upward to 8.2 percent.

The dismal numbers gave Romney ammunition to prosecute his case against Obama as a manager of America's economy.

"Jobs are job No. 1 for the presidency," Romney said.

Romney's argument on CNBC was largely similar to the one he makes on the campaign trail: that the recovery has been dampened by Obama's policies. Romney said the president's focus on "legislative achievements," like green energy policies, taxes, and health care reform, which Romney asserted would slow the recovery.

"He decided instead of getting people back to work he’d fight for something he thought was historic, and frankly the American people don’t want it and we can’t afford it," Romney said.

Economists have attributed some of the struggles in the U.S. to the ongoing monetary crisis in Europe, but Romney said that was no excuse for Obama.

"Of course the developments around the world always influence our jobs, but we should be well into a very robust recovery right now," Romney said, noting several times during the interview that the unemployment rate has remained above eight percent for 40 straight months -- longer than the Euro crisis."

The former Massachusetts governor said the most significant prescription to instill confidence in businesses in the near term would be to "elect a new president," and that his energy, tax and spending policies would stimulate more robust growth in the private sector.

Romney also voiced opposition to a third wave of so-called "quantitative easing," a stimulative effort by the Federal Reserve that, critics fear, could lead to inflation.

Beyond the economy, Romney also addressed some of the larger political issues to plague his campaign this week.

Three days after appearing at a fundraiser with controversial supporter Donald Trump, who has continued to question whether President Obama was born in the United States, Romney was asked again why he does not simply tell one of his most prominent surrogates to drop the issue.

"I disagree with it," Romney said. "there's no question that the President was born in the United States of America,"

Romney added that he doesn't tell his supporters what to think, but that Trump "knows what I believe about this."

The presumptive GOP nominee also pushed back on the Obama campaign's criticism of his private sector record.

"I'm happy to embrace my record in private equity," he said, pointing also to an interview given last night by former President Bill Clinton, who said Romney's business career was "sterling."

Well said Governor! Stay on point and you will prevail in November. Obama will have to eventually respond to these dismal jobs numbers... and it doesn't look too good in other areas of the economy either. Can't wait for him to blame Bush again.... lol!

He who laughs last laughs best - Mitt the Unfitt is Gleeful that America is in this sad state of affairs.

But there is time - job data will get better...in the next few months.

But unfortunately for Mitt the Unifitt, this sad job data is even a better argument that we should not go back to the same GOP policies that have caused this unrelenting bad state of affairs.

Gee miked,

at least jobs are being created.

when we were under the GOP plan for America we were loosing hundreds of thousands of jobs every month!

The GOP have blocked every plan Obama put forward in the past 3 years.

Imagine how good things would be IF the GOP had participated!

How? the GOP has shot down most of the major job creation initiatives Obama and other Dems have proposed to fix this Bush Depression.

Democrats should play this Mitch Clip with info about how Republicans managed to defeat most of Democratic economic measures that could have made a difference.

It's time to vote GOP bums out, vote Dem Bums in.

Is anyone surprised that Etch-a-scketch Mitt is happy people are unemployed?

He did say he would do anything to win...

On the flip side, I didn't think it was the government who creates jobs, why aren't we holding corporations responsible? Buy American, buy from businesses that are hiring Americans...supply and demand, demand that corporations hire or spend your money where they do.

Just the facts...really? I am pretty sure Harry Reid is sitting on a handful of GOP job bills that he won't even bring to the floor for a vote. So when will Liberals admit to themselves that President Obama has failed? Is everything in his current term someone else's fault? He gets to take credit for anything good (right or wrong) and then blame all the bad on the other side....really? Maybe he should have put his time when he had a majority to better use.

A "harsh indictment of Obama's policies"? What in the world could Mittens be referring to? The GOP Congress has blocked every one of the President's proposals to spur the economy.

In reality, the jobs report is an indictment of the GOP Congress's refusal to pass any meaningful economic legislation. In 2010 their mantra was 'jobs, jobs, jobs' but since they went to Washington it's nothing but birth control, debt ceiling shenanigans and Solyndra. None of which helps the economy.

Republicans are intent on blaming Obama for the economy they savaged, and now refuse to do anything to rebuild.

Just the facts - Name one jobs program that was worthwhile blocked by the GOP? Remember Obama was elected as President not King or Dictator of the U.S. If Obama was a true leader, and would do what he promised in 2008, he would be able to forge a compromise with the House. He has control of the Senate through the democrats majority. Bush 1, Bush 2, Clinton, and Regan all had to work with a congress, at one time or another, controlled by the opposite party.

Obama is egotistical and thinks he is the smartest person in the room, and that he should get everything he asks for. In his first year, he got his health care law, and his stimulus bill passed because of overwhelming democratic control of congress. Stimulus bill did not do what it was supposed to do and the ACA is about, in all likely hood, to be ruled unconstitutional by the Supreme Court. He has no foreign policy and no energy policy and no economic policy.

Let's see, Obama has blamed Bush, Arab Spring, Japanese Tsunami, crisis in Europe, the weather, and the Republican controlled House and the minority Republicans in the Senate.

Time to get rid of Obama and try something else. We can not take 4 more years of Obama economics.

MRWSR.

Two years ago, Republicans won statehouses across this country, as well as the House of Representatives and seats in the Senate. For the first time in decades, there is a Republican majority in the Maine state legislature, as well as a Tea Party governor. And what was the result of this Republican takeover? Maine is the only New England state that has not seen improving employment numbers. Standard and Poor just downgraded Maine's credit rating.

Hey Republicans: Where are the jobs you promised in 2010? Where are the jobs? Where are the jobs?

sfcret,

But, but, that is the problem. The GOP & tea Baggers don't offer anything else. It's all the same old sh!t i.e. what they did before by being greedy.

In addition to that, Their #1 strategy now is to depress turnout. Nationally, and in most states, Republicans are a significant minority, so they can’t win simply by motivating their own people to come out. They do their best to make people not want to come out and vote at all. When they scream, that has the effect of turning some voters away from the polls.

Rachel concluded, "Even in this nuts day in American politics, don't you think that candidate telling a big, blatant lie in the middle of the news cycle deserves a little follow up?" That was a rhetorical question, of course, but the answer is obviously yes, big, blatant lies from a major party presidential nominee do deserve some little follow up. It's one of the reasons I'm glad to present the 20th installment of my weekly series, chronicling Mitt's mendacity.

1. At a campaign stop in Craig, Colorado, this week, Romney argued, "The president, when he got elected, he said, look, 'I'm going to go out and borrow $787 billion and I'll keep unemployment below 8 percent.'" Romney says this just about every day.

It's not true.

2. In the same speech, Romney said Obama can't "blame Congress" for economic problems: "Remember that he had a supermajority in both the House and the Senate in his own party for his first two years." Putting aside the fact that the current Congress is more relevant,

the truth is Democrats did not have a supermajority for the vast majority of Obama's first two years.

3. Romney also argued, "That stimulus he put in place, it didn't help private sector jobs; it helped preserve government jobs." That's the exact opposite of reality.

Just a few of Willards LIES!!!!!!!!!....Check him out, if you dare!

Under President Obama, 4.3 million more jobs were created than under Bush. We are on the plus side jobs wise, and if it weren't for that imfamous republican controlled house of representates we could have had millions more. Let's not leave out republican governors who tried to solve the jobs crisis by firing hundreds of thousands of public employees. Many of them gave the wealthy more tax cuts that got us nowhere. Anyone who votes for Obama this year is just being stupid. When it's costing me over $100 to fill my truck with gas, groceries are getting more and more expensive to where a working middle class family can barely afford hamburger of all things, and the talk of electricity costs rising upwards of 800% by 2015? THIS is what you'd vote Obama back in for? These are issues that face the every day working class. This doesn't even count in the fact that the new CIO at the company I work might out source everything and I could be looking for a new job to support my wife and child in a stagnant job market? College kids are finding out their insurance is more than doubling under Obamacare, so they'll be thinking twice about voting for him. All he cares about is his health care, gays, illegals, unions and green energy.

For the average citizen working in the private industry, Obama has done NOTHING to help us out, in fact he's made our lives even harder with the rising costs of everything, and his policies are pushing the costs even higher.

And to Bob-324###,

I could give two sh!ts if he was pink with green ears, I still despise the guy. When will you liberals realize that for the extreme high majority of us that don't support Obama, it has NOTHING to do with his skin color? Accusations of racism is a last gasp resort of the liberal left. Give it up. The only ones that appear to be racist these days are the liberals.

Please remind us what policy's that you are referring to? Is it the Bush tax cuts? Obama has only renewed the tax rates, and Pelosi has asked that Obama to do it again...I wonder if it has anything to do with the record revenues that it produced, or maybe the unprecedented 52 month's of uninterrupted job growth. After all Obama has inherited an economy that he voted for 2 years to create...and Barney frank was asked some 6 times about Fannie and Freddy and we were assured that everything was just fine... AlexM, the president doesn't control gas or oil prices - whoever told you that is LYING to you. Prices are set by the market and though the US is producing more oil than ever, it is being sold on a world market with a much greater demand for oil. Whoever told you electricity is going up 800% by 2015 is LYING to you - that scary number is based on a single Fox News editorial.

I'm sorry you can't afford hamburgers, but really, you blame the president for this? Unemployment among college educated Americans is 3.9%. I'm guessing this ISN'T you. And yet you champion a candidate who is the poster child for 'streamlining' companies and outsourcing jobs. Do you really think 'average citizens' are going to fare any better in a Mitt Romney economy?

You can hate the President for any reason you wish, but to pretend that in many cases - I'm thinking specifically of the witch doctor posters, the watermelon patch postcard, and the racist emails we all receive from our rightwing relatives - that racism is not a factor is simply not reality.

Best of luck to you.

Look for Obama in the coming weeks and months to claim the dismal and failing economy and pretty much everything else is the fault of a growing list of fall guys. @SeekingSanity,

I find it extremely ironic when you say Romney can't answer any direct questions towards what he will do as president, when Obama did the same thing when he was running in 08. Also, I voted for Obama in 08. So to complain about how Romney is running is campaign now is the same as complaining about how Obama ran his in 08.

As far as the president not having any control over the oil prices, that is mostly true, I'm far from ignorant. BUT, he does have control over how much oil is pumped off federal lands. Him claiming that oil production is up under his administration is not a lie, but for him to claim credit for it is a lie since the only reason it is up is due to private lands which he has no control over. Oil pumped on federal lands is actually lower than it has been in quite a while. He DOES have control over that, and increasing that could help lower the gas prices. The other thing he does have some control over (along with Congress) is how and where the oil out of our country goes. They have a multitude of tools such has raising taxes, subsidies, etc to encourage oil companies to keep that oil in our country instead of exporting it. Leaving that up to the oil companies will definitely increase our costs as they are only out for $$$. So to say that the president has no control over oil prices is mostly true, but he can definitely affect them.

As far as the 800% price increase in electricity, to say that only a Fox talking point is wrong, since I don't read Fox hence didn't see it on Fox. If you had any clue as to how pricing of electricity is done, along with what Obama and the EPA has been doing to coal, natural gas and nuclear power, then you would be able to easily see the price dramatically increasing. Not only that, but in 08 when he was campaigning, he stated that electricaly prices would sky rocket under his administration. I suggest you stop reading only MSNBC and explore the internet a bit more.

I also never stated that racism wasn't an issue. I stated that to the extreme majority of us that don't agree with Obama, it has nothing to do with racism. No matter what party you belong to, or whether you even belong to a party, there are always the extremists. There are right extremists just like there are left and independent extremists.

As far as not being able to buy hamburger, that was a note towards decent (and as healthy as you can get 93/7) hamburger being over 5$ a pound. When I can take my wife and child out for a hamburger far cheaper than I can make one, then there is a problem.

Also, I don't think Romney is going to fix all the problems. I've seen him referred to as the 40% president because he'll be 40% better than Obama, so that's good enough for me. He'll screw somethings up just like every president has. He'll do things I don't agree with just like every president has. But my hope is he doesn't make my life harder than it already is at times to support my family and raise my child, which Obama has and is doing.

Selfish I know, but all I'm trying to do is watch my backyard. Think what you want about that, but my family is my responsibility that I take seriously.

Oh goody, the economy is still weak and Americans are still struggling, said Romney gleefully. And then he hurried out to orchestrate fake heckling and conduct paranoid speaking events, because that's the kind of president we all want. Not.

AlexM-3929653 --

What a Romney presidency would look like:

Day 1 –

Keystone Pipeline = Create some temporary jobs for Canadians and help Big Oil export tar sands to China, because that's the real world – Ya gotta reward your campaign donors, everyone knows that.

Tax cuts and reform = Take over a country in distress, end all entitlements/safety nets and liquidate government assets, add a least 5 trillion to the debt/deficits by cutting taxes for the rich and increasing defense spending, and redistributing wealth to the 1%.

"Repeal and Replace" health care reform = Leave debt-strapped states to deal with skyrocketing health care costs, with every man, woman, and child to fend for his/herself per the Romney Race to the Bottom Social Darwinism Doctrine.

This from David Letterman: Day 2 –

Ann Romney reminds Mitt he lost by a landslide.

Romney -- He's not in it for you.

sfcret

Time to ... try something else.

OMG I have to agree with sfcret -- Going backward to the same failed GOP/Bush-era voodoo economics that caused this mess in the first place, neocon warmongering, and religious wedge issues for distraction is NOT what our nation should do.

Teapublicans, you promised job creation to win in 2010. Where are the damn JOBS?!

Why do Teapublicans think that stealing the president's mantra of "change" is going to somehow bring them victory? Newt Gingrich, now there's a piece of work -- A piece of advice -- What ever he says, do not repeat it. It will just make you look stupid too.

"He decided instead of getting people back to work he’d fight for something he thought was historic, and frankly the American people don’t want it and we can’t afford it," Romney said.

Well, not quite. Obama focused on the economy with a massive stimulus, and since it was large and stretched out for 3 years he thought it would either fix the economy or buy him time to focus on other things. Last time I checked, millions of Americans like the individual components of Obamacare; it's just the individual mandate that they don't like. And according to the CBO, Obamacare reduces, I say again, reduces the deficit by roughly $200 billion over the next decade.

Economists have attributed some of the struggles in the U.S. to the ongoing monetary crisis in Europe, but Romney said that was no excuse for Obama.

Remember that our economy would be in a better state if China was stronger (as ironic as it seems) and the Euro zone wasn't in a recession thanks to premature austerity.

"Of course the developments around the world always influence our jobs, but we should be well into a very robust recovery right now," Romney said, noting several times during the interview that the unemployment rate has remained above eight percent for 40 straight months -- longer than the Euro crisis."

Not really. The only way we could be in a robust recovery with all the factors overseas is if the stimulus had been over a trillion dollars and if we had continually increased spending (requiring even higher deficits) every year. We would also need to have passed Obama's jobs act and, given the state of party politics, the Democrats would have to control Congress.

People, we need to take advantage of this extraordinary moment. Right now, while our economy is slowing and our unemployment is still high, interest rates for borrowing is low. That means, quite simply, that we can now borrow money at a fantastically low rate. I know that many of you, conservatives mostly, are opposed to borrowing even more money (due to the debt and deficit); even I, a liberal Keynesian Democrat, is hesitant to push the debt even higher. But, with job creation slacking off and economic growth being tepid at best, this is a time for action. Tax cuts don't work; unless they are targeted directly at consumers and are offered in a way that makes consumption appealing, at least for now. We cannot fret about debt and deficits; if we don't spend money now, we will never get out of this recession, and thus our deficits will grow even larger. We need to spend money NOW; we can deal with austerity later.

Now, you may be afraid that, due to our large debt, creditors will eventually abandon the dollar. And, if we don't address the debt in the future, that will most likely happen. But now, thanks to the euro crisis, investors from all over the world are piling their money and their confidence in the dollar. With interest rates at record lows, we cannot forsake this opportunity. If we wait too long, interest rates will rise and we will hit by a tsunami of interest. The creditors won't abandon the dollar, at least not if we borrow a huge amount to fix our economy instead of paying off current spending levels, because they know that if we use that money now, our deficits will be lower in the future thanks to a recovering economy. As part of a plan I have been creating for months, I think I have a whopper plan to create jobs, fix our infrastructure, and boost our economy.

II. Economic Recovery Package

  • Education reform. Increase funding for Department of Education, adopt RAND education policy and further Head Start programs.
  • Create Department of Tourism with $36 billion budget to support 150,000 employees to speed up process for foreign tourists to apply for visas to US and make system more efficient.
  • $90 billion in infrastructure bank to leverage capital for infrastructure repairs to employ millions of Americans.
  • Incorporate policies of Obama's Jobs Bill.
  • Offer incentives for businesses to buy US-made equipment and to employ people in America to the tune of perhaps $2,000-$3,000 per head; includes only people earning the median salary that the companies provides for its workers.
  • Increase duties and tariffs for Chinese goods by 50% until China appreciates its currency and lowers subsidies; place more cases on Chinese fraud and stealing,
  • $60 billion in incentives and federal loans and grants to green technology every year for 4 years.
  • Regulatory overview to decrease unnecessary regulations for economy and add regulations were needed.
  • Reinstate Glass-Steagall.
  • Lift moratorium on offshore oil drilling and open up certain areas for energy exploration WITH safety and environmental precautions and insure safety.
  • Invest $40 billion in new R&D projects every year for 4 years.
  • Offer more scholarships and Pell grants; prioritize scholarships to promote getting degrees in engineering, technology, etc.
  • Negotiate lower tuition deals with private institutions in return for aid and invest more money public higher education. Negotiate with states for a state education surtax to pay for public universities.
  • Help housing market: tighten regulations on housing and financial markets, reform Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac; create partnership programs between the government and the private sector to buy houses and rent it out to former owners; persuade banks to write off parts of underwater mortgages; quicken time for foreclosures; demolish old buildings to open up to construction projects.
  • Increase federal gasoline tax to $.225/gallon and use extra revenues to revamp infrastructure.
  • Extend payroll tax cut.
  • Reform Post Office. Eliminate 60,000 payrolls through early retirement, increase stamp costs to $.51, cut administrative salaries and budgets, pay freeze, adopt methods that FedEx and UPS do, transition to an energy-efficient postal fleet and turn postal buildings "green," and find more ways to trim costs.
  • Increase minimum wage to $8.25 and institute living wage. Index minimum wage to inflation and mandate that all employers increase their employee's salary by inflation.
  • Institute living wage.
  • Regulate the derivatives market.
  • Education reform. Increase funding for Department of Education, adopt RAND education policy and further Head Start programs.
  • Create Department of Tourism with $36 billion budget to support 150,000 employees to speed up process for foreign tourists to apply for visas to US and make system more efficient.
  • $120 billion in infrastructure bank to leverage capital for infrastructure repairs to employ millions of Americans.
  • $1.5 trillion in infrastructure spending (rebuilding energy grid, roads, bridges, ports, dams, etc) over the next decade. Fund this with a 13% surtax on anyone making over $1 million.
  • Expand the payroll cap to 90% of all earnings and exempt the first $20,000 from it (boosts the economy by putting more money into the pockets of consumers and is offset by expansion of payroll tax cut to 90% of all earnings).
  • Incorporate policies of Obama's Jobs Bill.
  • Offer incentives for businesses to buy US-made equipment and to employ people in America to the tune of perhaps $2,000-$3,000 per head; includes only people earning the median salary that the companies provides for its workers.
  • $25 billion in incentives and federal loans and grants to green technology every year for 4 years.

Who is gullible enough to believe Romney's nonsense?

If "job creation" and the economy was important to Romney, this phony would not have purchased companies and repeatedly dumped the employees. This was one of his many schemes to make a personal profit. This candidate is "married" to the team of 2000-2008. Unless you are in the 1%, there is not a good reason to vote for the GOP.

The former Massachusetts governor said the most significant prescription to instill confidence in businesses in the near term would be to "elect a new president," and that his energy, tax and spending policies would stimulate more robust growth in the private sector.

A this statement indicates, Romney is basically dangling a carrot in front of big business to encourage them to push off any expansion plans until he's in office. We always have "the grass is greener" syndrome before an election, but this is a direct attempt to affect Obama's and our economic recovery.

Combine this pandering with the early economic stall tactics from Boehner (whose past debt ceiling actions virtually KILLED consumer confidence and, therefor, demand), the $100s of millions spent on hate ads, and the stepped up 24/7 all-media barrage of rancor... and you have the clear GOP recipe for success in November.

And it's working.

Unabated, it will win the day.

We are fools.

They are in it STRICTLY for the financial bottom line for the corporations, not working people. Yet people still carry their stained water. The followers of the GOP have even lost their honor. As long as the Weeper of the House wants to take pot-shots from the cheap seats, I have a couple of questions of my own Mr. Speaker?

From today's jobs report, it seems our resident FR right wingers are correct about corporations sitting on their trillions until they rid the black man from the White House!

Whatever will they do, when things don't work out according to plan for them…?

What's even worse is how ecstatic these very same people are at this kind of news.

Why is no one holding the Weeper of the Houses feet to the flames?

Wasn't he the one who promised if given the majority in 2010 - they would somehow magically make J-O-B-S appear?

Where are the J-O-B-S we were promied Mr. Speaker?

Instead you gave us a war on women...

The MSM is as guilty of this mess as anyone for not reminding America what was promised to them!

If people are stupid enough to return to everything that got us into this mess in the first place, then this country deserves to fail!

Feisty: Why is it that you cannot look at the failed policies of the Obama administration and not his skin color. What is always amazing to me is liberals continue to bring up race but then call Republicans "racists"? We don't care if the president is white, black, purple, or green. All we care about is a president that loves this country, is proud of this country, and wants to help this country grow. Obama doesn't care about ANY of those things, has initiated policies that are killing this economy, and all you can do is try to bring race back into the debate? Sorry, YOU are the racist - not Republicans. We have not ONCE brought up race. Only you do that. We care about POLICIES!!

But the more important question is WHY you bring up race? Because that is all the Democrats have left in their arsenal. CAN'T run on the economy. CAN'T run on the success of Obama policies. CAN'T run on Democrat ideology. The last three years have confirmed each of those incredible failures.

So you just keep playing the "race" card and see how far that gets you. But I'll tell you in advance - not far............

So far I've seen and heard the likes of John Boehner and Eric Kantor bemoan the fact the President is not doing enough etc. etc. Not a single one has offered to work with him, except to cut taxes, war on women's right, they are doing nothing to help. NOTHING! Except of course to undermine him and his efforts to help people.

And those on the right call themselves patriotic Americans, they claim they work harder, their way is right, my way or the highway, build up the military, send the unemployed to fight their wars, I am better than you, little missy you go in the kitchen and mind your children I'll tell you what to do. There was nothing we could do. We are not with "glee" that the report was bad. We are DISGUSTED!! And why? Because ANYBODY who has ever taken (and passed) a college economics course KNEW the policies would hinder economic growth. We TOLD you this would happen!! Not because we are psychic but because this economic decline happens EVERY TIME these policies have been tried. We only had to look at history.

It is simple: When you have DISDAIN for the private sector and businesses and your policies are INTENDED to punish the private sector and businesses then you damage private sector and businesses. Anybody with the IQ above a turnip can clearly see this. But, unfortunately, you STILL can't see this even though it has been happening before our eyes over the last three years. I suggest you take your head out of the sand and look around. You will see these policies are damaging to businesses. Okay Feisty, you want everyone to be convinced of your ignorance I'll take that challenge:

1) Obama's skin color is of no concern to us - just his failed policies

2) You say "Whatever they will do...". What does that mean? You can't even articulate what you are meaning to say?? Fact of the matter is Obama said in 2008 he would fix the economy. He didn't. He has made it worse over three years. So what's your point?

3) We are not "ecstatic" - we are disappointed and frustrated. Why? Because we TOLD the Democrats their policies would do EXACTLY what we now have. Nobody's fault but Democrats and Obama.

4) Speaker of the House can ONLY pass House laws but when the Senate won't even ALLOW a vote then how is a Speaker of the House to create jobs. We said if elected we can create jobs, have offered MULTIPLE jobs bills, but the Senate won't even allow a vote. Sorry, you lost that argument.

5) Where are the jobs? Why hasn't the Speaker created them? Refer to #4. You lost again.

6) War on women? Boy, you are really REACHING for some way to distract from the failed Obama policies.

I suggest you take an economics course and, just a suggestion, when starting out with an argument don't try to make race your most important point. It simply confirms your inability to put together any valid arguments.

1) Obama's skin color is of no concern to us - just his failed policies

The comments here say otherwise!

You say "Whatever they will do...". What does that mean?

It means, when they run out the clock & President Obama is re-elected will they sit on their trillions for another 4 years while running this country to the brink?

Why? Because we TOLD the Democrats their policies would do EXACTLY what we now have

Got it! Let's go back to the very same policies that caused the crash in the first place! Quit pissing on my leg & telling me it's raining!

3) We are not "ecstatic" - we are disappointed and frustrated.

Again, comments speak the opposite - you all are so giddy you can't contain yourselves! It's cool with me because Team Red is doing a much better job showing America they're willing to do anything to win!

4) Speaker of the House can ONLY pass House laws but when the Senate won't even ALLOW a vote then how is a Speaker of the House to create jobs

Is Mr. Speaker didn't view compromise as a deadly sin - something might get done!

5) Where are the jobs? Why hasn't the Speaker created them?

Then why was he running around the country PROMISING if elected in 2010 he would create them?

6) War on women?

I would suggest you keep your head tucked between your cheeks! You appear to be very content there!

It simply confirms your inability to put together any valid arguments.

Nice try but a rookie mistake! ;o)

Taking this page for example, the only two people that have brought up race are bought left leaning posters (only read the first two threads).

As every day goes by, I grow more and more confident that he will not be re-elected as his policies have been out long enough now to show the effect they'll end up having on the country. While the republicans definitely will not be able to give us the utopia they keep promising, they sure can't screw us up anymore than Obama has, and would if he was to get another four years.

Alan, NJ - So why don't they cut taxes?

Business taxes were cut in 2003. So why did we loose jobs? Because tax cuts do not create jobs, demand does. ECON-101. You could cut corporate taxes to 0% and not one job will be created. Only when demand is there will businesses hire.

tackandcover, i know. all that pent up money on the sideline waiting for some stability from government on healthcare and taxes. its all playing out so nicely. healthcare bill will be ruled unconstitutional and that alone would create millions of jobs. then coupled with the bush tax cuts getting permanetly extended. we will see an economy like never before. get your money ready, we're all about to become rich.

How come we cut taxes in 2001 and 2003, and we didn't get rich??? Only the wealthiest Americans did. Everyone else almost to the poorhouse in 2008. Yes, businesses want stability; but we the people cannot sell out our long-term welfare for economic growth. Obamacare is essentially a free-market alternative to single-payer healthcare, which I support. It is a bit of a handful, but it's good for the US over the long-term, and will help slow down the increase in insurance prices. Sometimes there are perfectly good reasons for enacting policies that don't necessarily cause economic growth, but will serve society good. In fact, Obamacare might be able to stabilize costs for the medium-term, buying us time to expand on this and hopefully achieve broader healthcare reform. I once heard that the program could cost approximately 700,000 jobs over the next decade, but that is merely speculation. We cannot sacrifice fixing healthcare just for growth's-sake.

And as for the Bush tax cuts, they had virtually no positive effect on the US. Look up the Tax Policy Center for more. In fact, in the case of small businesses, the Bush tax cuts was detrimental, as it drove up costs for acquiring capital. The deficits raised interest rates, making it more difficult for small businesses to get additional capital for expanding their operations. It adds $3.8 trillion to the debt over the next decade. We might as well do away with them, as they are half of our future deficits. They limit our abilities to actually promote real economic policies. That, my dear friend, is the truth.

The most powerful "harsh indictment" this country is experiencing is the GOP's loss of honor and their agenda of dividing the country with their phony lies, fear and hate. This one simple fact is effecting our lives more profoundly than ANYTHING we have seen in these last few years. And people still carry their tainted water. Flat weird and strange. Unhonorable and unacceptable in a free country.

What? Romney and Republicans aren't taking credit for this? They try to take credit when unemployment goes down. Gees, what happened with that? (Insert rolling of eyes here.)

The fact is that job growth in the private sector has continued for 27 months straight, despite Teapublican obstructionism. And if the public sector could hire back employees like the teachers we need, the unemployment rate would be a full point lower (i.e., it would be 7.2%).

Speaking of Teapublicans, I was stunned by cow pie distortions like Cantor's snarky BS about how the economy could be better with proper leadership. Leadership, really, seriously, this from the Party of chaos, no leadership, Party of all we can say is No? And Boehner saying things would be better if the president/Dems had followed their advice. What is their advice? Tax cuts for the gazillionare "job creators," and let's see now, seems to me the Bush tax cuts were extended. Hmm, so where are all those jobs? Cantor, Boehner, et al, are nothing but dirt-bag blowhards.

The REAL reason the economy has stalled is because the Teapublicans refused to support the Jobs Act. We would have millions more people working right now, but the sad truth is that the GOP/TP have thrown the American people under the bus as part of their plot to take over all branches of government. "Pass This Bill," and pass it now!

The President has always been honest that this turn around wouldn't be easy and that there would be ups AND downs. Overall though, the trajectory has been up.

Of course, in the twisted Teapublican mentality, if it's bad then it's the President's fault and if it's good, the President had nothing to do with it. Just remember...

Funny how even the LIBERALS have accepted the fact that Obama is useless and cannot fix this economy. You don't bother telling me ALL about the policies Obama implemented and how he was going to be a SAVIOR!! Obamacare, Solyndra, Green Energy, EPA, Unions, etc. ALL of these things were going to make this economy GREAT!! So when all the Obama policies fail you don't have an answer. Liberals say "what do we do now!! Everything Obama has done has FAILED!!". So the only option left is to somehow blame the Republicans?? That is so silly it is funny!! Obama is the president.

Obama said in 2009 he would "fix it" and "if the economy doesn't recover by 2012 he will be a one term president". We had the Summer of Recovery in 2009. Then the Summer of Recovery in 2010. Then the Summer of Recovery in 2011. And then when the Summer of Recovery didn't happen in 2009 nor 2010 nor 2011 and obviously will not occur in 2012 because the Obama policies have now become apparent to the economy the answer by Liberals is (wait for it - this is the HILARIOUS PART!!) they try to blame it on Republicans. Sorry, only about 30% of the population (the true diehard kool-aid drinking Obama supporters afraid to actually take their head out of the sand) will buy that nonsense......

Okay, then let's go with that unintelligent argument because that IS your argument. So when Democrats took over the house in the 2006 election and blocked all of Bush's policies over the next two years and the economy tanked then no way was Bush responsible for that. The Speaker of the House is responsible. Right? That is your point? Okay, so now you are saying that Nancy Pelosi was responsible for the financial market collapse and not George W. Bush. Boy!! So glad to FINALLY hear a Democrat confirm the "Great Recession" was NOT the fault of George W. Bush and it was actually the DEMOCRATS!! Thanks for clarifying that for EVERYBODY!!

Do a little research and you will find that was NEVER, EVER part of any Tea Party Platform. The Tea Party was a reaction to the Government overreach and overspending, growing over many administrations but thrown into hyper-drive with Obama and his Democrat-controlled & veto-proof congress.

The Tea Party simply wants the Government to get out of the way of the economy and stop picking the taxpayers pockets in return for vote-buying boondoggles.

      Ruken.

I think it is you who need to do a little research.

The entire reason for the Financial crisis was the collapse of the sub-prime mortgage market.

That market (no money down mortgages, no income verification, basically "ez-credit") was a bubble entirely created by Government intervention in the housing market under the aegis of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. It was a policy of "give everybody with a pulse a mortgage...they deserve a house. And if they can't pay, don't worry about it, we, the Great Government, will cover your losses."

You can blame the banks and Wall Street all you want, but they were simply taking advantage of the fact that they could make these deals with little risk.

There's enough blame on both parties to go around on who got us into this mess, but the root cause--Government intervention in free market.

      ARE YOU SERIOUS???

It was Government Regulations that changed the lending guidelines that banks had established for many, many years. Those guidelines (like 20% down, good credit, verifiable income) were tossed by the wayside in the name of "fairness" and "everybody deserves a house." In return for the banks accepting that new set of Government-sponsored rules for mortgages (with a higher risk), the Government insured those sub-prime mortgages.

Do some research. The sub-prime mortgage fiasco was entirely rooted in Government Regulation.

This recession which is really a modern day depression, call it the The Great Bush Depression had it's beginning in 2007 when we who make under $250,000 were issued a check from the treasury dept. for $1425 for a couple and $725 for individuals and were told by George Bush to go out and spend it on consumables, anything and everything. They knew then we were in for tough times.Well 65% of American's either paid off credit or saved it, which is the real reason for our economic chaos. Personal debt is at a all time high at a saturation level unsustainable, so it came crashing down and stalled the economy. It is the downside of cyclic supply and demand whatever you want to call it. And it probably will not recover until 2014. I don't care if Big Bird is in the oval office. You can blame both parties on wrong legislation or lack there of, whatever it is. Taking Obama out and inserting Romney in probably won't cure a thing except that as improvement is seen 2013-2015, someone will be able to gloat on something they had really no contol of.

      ForePlinger,

No, guns were not involved. However, law suits were. In fact, the current President was one of the ring leaders and represented the 'community' in several of these law suits against banks for not offering these loans in the name of 'fairness'. Also, Clinton's Secretary of Housing and Urban Development pushed the banks into 'Affirmative Action Mortgages'. Giving loans, albiet at a much higher default rate, to offer families and opportunity to own a home that would not otherwise qualify.

      http://www.washingtontimes.com/blog/watercooler/2010/oct/16/1998-sec-cuomo-pushes-affirmative-action-mortgage-/

      Kimba and Rick:

Lawsuits against "red-lining" had nothing to do with the untrammelled greed of the banking industry. It merely assured that EVERYBODY has the same consideration for housing loans instead of codifying ghettos into financial practices.

Secondly, those mortgage back derivatives wouldn't have been there to purchase if banks weren't making "meat and asbestos" sausages (the meat being good loans and the asbestos...well, do I really have to explain it again?). Once again, that action was due to the 43rd President's failure to appoint oversight at the executive branch level.

When you look at the robo-signings, the N.I.N.J.A. loans and the other shenanigans of the for profit banking system, it's easy to see where the blame lies. This Teapublican Congress has been doing everything it can to stymie progress to fix this problem and that's a huge drag on the economy. Why you would support that, I don't know. Why don't you compare what the range of dollars on the table was in comparison to 2009, and 2010 and 2011. You see I work with Payroll and you will be surprised how those gaps have diminished making folks reach the limits faster thus you fall to next bracket.

You probably don't know what I'm talking about. Just go to the IRS tables and do the comparison.

It's Republicans policies of "starving the beast" that got us into this.

You don't cut taxes, go to war twice, and yell "deficits don't matter".

So Obama inherited an awful economy, with fewer revenues which makes it look like he's spending more when in fact that isn't the case at all.

Nice try, the informed people know how the right is spinning everything.

Eric - Obama did not inherit and awful economy, he asked for it. No one died and left Obama the Presidency in a will. Obama had been in the Senate two years before volunteering for the job of President. He said he could/would fix it and he could lead the country and unite the people.

He was not up to the job and has failed miserably. He was not ready for the job of President, but the democrats couldn't see that, because they drank the left wing cool-aid. It's time to replace this failure and try something new.

Remember when Rush Limbaugh said that the GOP shouldn't work with Obama??? Didn't think so.

He is nothing but a egotistical person who thinks he is the smartest people in the room. Remember he was elected President, not King or Dictator, he is not entitled to getting everything he wants.

Dude, where did I blame Bush. And by the way, the thing about the Republicans trying to sabotage the President on his inauguration day was true. Check out the book Do Not Ask What Good We Do. And by the way, Reagan, Bush I, Clinton, and Bush II didn't have to deal with such an extremist party that refused to compromise. Obama offered to cut spending by $3 trillion, and all he asked for was $1 trillion in revenues; and the GOP said no. Obama tried to fix the economy via a jobs bill paid for only by a tax on millionaires; GOP said no. Obama tried to pass healthcare reform that was based on a Republican idea, the individual mandate, similar to the cap and trade concept that Republicans put forth on controlling carbon emissions; GOP said no. See a pattern here??? The GOP has moved so far to the right that even Ronald Reagan (who by the way raised taxes 17 times and tripled our national debt) would derided as a tax-and-spend liberal. It's the truth, sfcret.

If one had leadership abilities one would be able to get concessions and compromise on important issues. Leadership is bringing people with different ideas together, Obama lacks that ability. He is nothing but a egotistical person who thinks he is the smartest people in the room. Remember he was elected President, not King or Dictator, he is not entitled to getting everything he wants.

Nor did the President get everything he wanted. He didn't get a balanced deficit reduction deal (Bowles Simpson or the summer "Grand Bargain"). He didn't get to repeal tax cuts for the very wealthy. He didn't get the job-creation plan that he wanted. He didn't even get a Republican Party that would compromise with him. He may or may not of pissed of the GOP, that is debatable, but they should at least have had the dignity and integrity to compromise with him when they had the cards. They could have gotten anything they wanted; spending cuts, entitlement reform (in the case of Simpson Bowles), tax reform, anything. All they had to do was compromise. Tell me, then, name five times when the Republicans compromised with Democrats on a major issue. And by the way, compromise means give-or-take, not getting 98% or what you wanted. Obama is not a perfect president; not by a long-shot. He has many flaws and mistakes. Conservatives and Republicans like to deride him as a socialist, but that is only because they have moved so far to the right that even Ronald Reagan would be a socialist. Obama, in actuality, is actually a centrist president, a bit more centrist than Bill Clinton himself. Unfortunately, unlike Clinton, Obama did not get nearly as enough done to help the economy and with the other problems facing this country.

Amy says spending is lower under this president than any President in the last 60 years. She also says taxes for the middle class are lower and then she links to an article on politifact.com. What she doesn't mention is that the politifact article does not mention spending. That information comes from sources www.democrats.org and thinkprogress. You think they are biased to the left much.

Of course they could be going by what what Rex Nutting came up with. According to him since the Obama stimulus of 2009 was on Bush's last budget year then that money has to be charged to the Bush presidency. And they also do not include the emergency supplementals that Obama appropriated that same year. Liberal democrats get a little sneakier with each passing year.

The fact that he can't get a consensus only shows that he has no leadership ability. Remember he asked for the job, he said he could unite the country and get unemployment down below 8%, just give me money to throw at the problem as I see it. Tax and spend, tax and spend, that's all I hear from Obama and the left. We have to cut spending and revise the tax codes.

BTW, Obama was the one that walked away from the so called "grand bargain", because he thought he could get a better deal from the so called "gang of 6 Senators". Obama has been the most divisive President in my life time, which covers FDR to Obama. He preaches class warfare, and every other wedge issue, all because he is incompetent and in way over his head.

Oh, so I am deflecting?? What about those five times the GOP compromised??? Seems like I proved my point and all your doing is trying to save face, right?? There is a fine line, my dear friend, between leadership and capitulation. If Obama ever wanted bipartisanship, he'd have to literally grovel before McConnell and Boehner. He'd have to accept all of their demands, and then they would attack him for being ineffective and submissive. Leadership only works if the opposing party has a shred of dignity and integrity, or if the leader has effective control of the government. Enough with your deflecting and try and answer me like a man.

Ahh, falling for right-wing lies, are we??? Obama never predicted to get unemployment below 8% with the stimulus; ask Politifact. He did say that he would unite the country, but he couldn't, I'll give you that. But how can you unite a country when your opponents are dedicated only to your downfall??? And by the way, Obama has only raised sin taxes, not regular ones. All he did was spend money, which ultimately lifted our economy out of the recession. Cutting spending will only ruin our economy; ask Romney himself. We need to spend more money, but we can offset that spending by simply raising taxes, cutting spending, or doing both. That is our solution. I do agree that we eventually need to reform the tax code and cut spending, but not during a fragile recovery. We did that in 1937, and got dragged right back into a recession. Same's gonna happen in 2013, I assume. Funny how history has a way of repeating itself...

If this low job creation is a report on Obama's economic plan.

WHAT is the message from the GOP economic plan in effect from 2001-2008.

we had lost 2 million jobs BEFORE the 2004 election. another 4 million before he left office!

Bush RAN in 2004, on a platform of ANOTHER tax cut to create jobs, since the first 1.7 trillion cut wasn't big enough apparently.

The primary message of the GOP economic plan in effect from 2001-2008 is that it was in effect from 2001-2008.

I happened to be at work today, and took a look at a calender - and lo and behold, it appears to be 2012.

Unless you are seriously trying to say that what George Bush did in 2001 is still the primary reason that we are in very bad shape today, maybe we could concentrate on actual current events.

Or maybe your point is that the Obama tax cuts are the reason - the only reason - we are in trouble.

Either way, that does not seem to be looking at the whole picture.

Oh - wait - could it be that the situation is slightly more complex than Bush in 2001 and the Obama tax cuts?

Nah, couldnt be - then Obama might actually be responsible for something, and we cant have that now....

Example of the politics of "Flip" Romney:

Ever since the news broke last Friday that our economy added 257,000 new private-sector jobs in January, Mitt Romney has been grasping for a way to morph the positive news about our economic recovery into something that will benefit him politically. In his Nevada caucus speech this weekend, Romney said:

“[H]e's been trying to take a bow for 8.3 percent unemployment. Not so fast, Mr. President ... We welcome any good news on the jobs front, but it is thanks to the innovation of the American people in the private sector, not to you.”

Far from taking “a bow,” President Obama has been clear about the fact that we still have a long road ahead of us. When President Obama took office in January 2009, we were shedding nearly 800,000 jobs a month. His immediate, decisive action to stop the bleeding reversed the trend. We’ve now seen 23 straight months of private-sector job growth, creating a total of 3.7 million jobs.

Now, today, with the numbers going the other way, ol' "Flop" Romney says, it is NOT due to "the American people in the private sector", but President Obama.
So which is it Willard? Flip or Flop?
The truth is, it is neither one exclusively, but poor Mittens is too out of touch with America to realize the truth of the matter.

Better ditch Romney! He is a Norquist Pledger - he has signed up & made the vow - who will NOT advance the interests of America!

Jobs are directly the result of strong middle class demand. That is the only thing (other than more Government spending) that forces employers to take on the liability of new employees. So the question is this... what is the Republican plan for boosting middle class demand? If the answer is tax cuts for business and rich guys, all I can say is 'thanks for playing'.

Mitt knows about business: not about the economy. He doesn't realize that tax cuts for the wealthy don't create economic growth. He doesn't realize that the consumers create jobs, not the wealthy. He doesn't realize that deregulation caused our recession; that businesses don't hire because of tax cuts; and that demand-side, not supply-side, economics is the solution. And if Romney knows a lot about budgets, how come he increased the debt in Massachusetts??? How come he, God forbid, he raised taxes as governor??? He had his chance to translate his business experience into executive leadership as governor of Massachusetts, and he failed. It became the 47th in job creation under his term. How exactly is he ready to lead now???

Let's spin a possible positive spin on Mitt: In his endeavors he has taken a Bain capital and was highly successful at making it extremely profitable,I have heard he is extremely talented and ripping thru objectives and initiatives to get to his final outcome. However, how he created a plethora of jobs doing this is debatable. He was also pretty successful as Olympic CEO. These two examples are typical hierarchical management where you call the shots and people generally carry out the objective. But now the big question is can he accomplish the same thing when there is 438 congressional people and 100 Senators, that is the big unknown. Personally, I think Obama has more guts to this kind of work, where it would be eternally frustrating to Romney.

Do you have any numbers on how much Romney increased the debt in Massachusetts? I do.

Why isn't Romney holding his corporate America buddies' feet to the fire, considering profits are up over last year? I was just on another site where an analyst pointed out:

Company profits, after tax and unadjusted for inventories and capital consumption, increased at an 11.7 percent annual rate from the previous quarter and were up 14.8 percent from a year ago. As the economy has improved, companies have been able to make more money with about the same or maybe a slightly larger labor force. This is good news for stock prices, which have almost doubled since the March 2009 lows. But improved profitability hasn't helped enough of the 12.7 million Americans get back to work, nor has it trickled down into meaningfully higher wages for those lucky enough to be employed.

That's the real problem here. Whether or not there are tax cuts, corporations just keep on turtling with their revenues, to attract shareholders, pay management bonuses, or just amass a profit hoard.

They don't increase the regular workers' wages, and they don't seem to need more regular workers to make money when they can just raise prices and hoard the revenue. It's just disgusting really.

The former Massachusetts governor said the most significant prescription to instill confidence in businesses in the near term would be to "elect a new president," and that his energy, tax and spending policies would stimulate more robust growth in the private sector.

                ...and those policies are...?

Economists have attributed some of the struggles in the U.S. to the ongoing monetary crisis in Europe, but Romney said that was no excuse for Obama.

Ah, so now he's the President of Europe as well.

"I'm happy to embrace my record in private equity," he said, pointing also to an interview given last night by former President Bill Clinton, who said Romney's business career was "sterling."

Yes...he created wealth (that is what businesses do)...but did he create jobs?

Back in 2000 when we had a budget surplus, Al Gore wanted to put the money in a "lockbox" and use it to pay for medicare and social security when the baby boomers retired. George Bush said "It's your money, I want to give it back to you." Of course by 2001 even before 9/11 and the war on terror it was no longer our money, but our children's and grandchildren's money that was paying for Bush's tax-cut for the rich. That was 12 years and 2 recessions ago. How much longer do we have to wait for the Bush tax-cuts for the rich to start working?

That is pure BS. First there was a little matter of a 5 trillion public debt that Clinton had to deal with. And secondly the tax cuts did not happen until after the "surplus" was put back where it came from - social security.

What ever happened to the Romney 'Tax Returns from 2003 thru 2010?

Romney was required to file a financial disclosure form, (a less detailed requirement than submitting past tax forms) when he filed for president. He argued that he should not have to release his taxes since the disclosure form revealed everything of any importantance. the problem is, there were 23 different investment funds shown on his taxes that did not appear on his disclosure form and 11 of those were in overseas, confidential banking centers, conceivably a sign of what he's embarrassed to disclose if the government can prove it was deliberate and not just a careless slip-up. The biggest concern is his Swiss bank accounts, one of the items not on his financial disclosure from 2003 to 2010, when his accountant closed. He closed it in the middle of an amnesty that the IRS had declared for owners of previously unreported Swiss bank accounts if they came clean, they would not face criminal prosecution for not reporting it in previous years (which was illegal plus most weren't paying taxes on that money). Was the sudden shutdown of Romney's secret Swiss bank account part of this amnesty program? We can't know unless and until he releases prior returns, which he continues to refuse to do provide. We should insist the former Governor provide the 10 years of tax returns he's hiding.

I wonder why Mitt thinks anything will change in the fantasy world of him being President. Will Congress begin to act like adults and work together? Hardly. They'll fight each other tooth and nail until they're removed from their positions of power, plain and simple.

People need to stop thinking a change in Presidency is somehow going to miraculously make a fractured and spiteful Congress work together. Because it won't.

I know, but come on, people need to get their heads out of the sand and realize the President can't do anything, if the House and Senate aren't actually working. The GoP has made it a top priority to stonewall anything related to Obama, the Democrats, in turn stonewall everything the GoP wants to do. I may not agree with some of the things on either side, but the fact remains, changing Presidents will solve nothing. What needs to be change is the culture of Congress. Otherwise, we're simply going to be replacing a new President every 4 years, thinking that because he/she hasn't done something to immediately fix everyone's problems, the next one will. It's stupid and really just ignores how our Government works (or in this case, doesn't).

Look at the naturalization exam questions for example, the vast majority of said questions most members of this board couldn't answer. It's no wonder that many posters have no comprehension whatsoever on how our own government works, much less the economy.

It's rather sad. With an "education" system like ours, I fear for the future of this country.

So far it is clear his only goal is to remove Obama from office. And at any cost. The Super Paks just would not be enough so now we have to deal with voter repression. Is it just that the republican party needs to have such large amounts of money, voter repression and who knows what else to beat Obama? Why not run on their ideas?

@BigBen: Such as what, exactly? Can you even name one that's passed the House and Senate? Any policy that's made it into legislation would have to pass through a Republican controlled House, and a Democrat controlled Senate. So, essentially, any of his policies, are actually Republican and Democratic policies.

Alrighty then - Mitt is not running for president....

Interesting in the extreme that he is essentially neck and neck in that race that he is not running, particularly when he is not running against Obama, frequently called the greatest President ever on this board.

Wouldnt you think that someone you think is so clueless, evil, spineless, bullying, devoid of ideas, and so very out of touch (according to the left) is doing that well against such a personally popular President is a sign that perhaps those perceptions of Romney might not be 100% spot on?

Could it be the lack of obvious, popular successes by the president?

Nah, it couldnt be that simple....

@NoTalkingPoints: Or that the public are sheep, and are more swayed by PAC funded smear campaigns, propaganda from the mainstream media and not doing their own research on candidates to have more than a cursory idea of what either candidate stands for. That's really the more likely scenario.

Anyone who thinks the President is directly responsible for the jobs numbers, is either ignorant, or is completely ignoring that the only legislation that reaches the democratically controlled Senate, is done so at the whim of the Republican majority House.

Alrighty B - then riddle me this - if the senate is democratically controlled, which it is, and the only legislation that gets to the senate comes from the house, which it does, why wont they even allow a vote on it?

As I have said before, if the legislation is so bad, then put it to the vote- let the vote decide. The senate is firml democratically controlled, so it seems that if the dems disagree the votes would be pretty safe - but still they wont do it.

                            I wonder why?

And oh yeah - as far as the pacs go, check out the USA today, published today, claiming that the influence of the pacs is much smaller than anticipated.

I do agree with you that most people are not well informed, to the detriment of the country. I also agree that the president is not solely responsible for job creation numbers - there is plenty of blame on both sides for the failure of government to respond on that issue to go around.

However - my post earlier was in response to Mat, who apparently has decided that Romney is not actually running for president, despite all obvious logic indicating otherwise.

People who think that blue dog Democrats are really Democrats don't understand how it works. They are Republicans, but they run as Democrats so the Democrats in red states might vote for them thinking they MIGHT be better than the Republicans. They aren't, and they are dishonest for calling themselves Democrats. They don't vote Democratic and they aren't...saying they are and counting them as Democrats skews the voting results. They vote against the rest of the Democrats most of the time and shouldn't be in office in the first place. Yes, I live in a red state and I see it...ugh.

@NotalkingPoints: I would think that's pretty obvious, the House doesn't let any meaningful Democratic legislation go through, so the Senate won't let any meaningful Republican legislation go through. It's just that simple, and increasingly frustrating. Neither side is willing to let anything go, and just sits there and holds onto past slights.

It's literally like High School, seriously, they're no different than kids on a playground who won't let anything go. It's pathetic, and infuriating that these guys get paid no matter what, and receive some of the best health coverage in the country, for successfully bringing our Government to a stand still.

Yes, the ratings of the congress is dismal but the rating of the republicans in congress is less dismal than the democrats.

@Rick: Yes, but the real question is, do the Republican's have a chance of taking the White House, Senate and House? Or the Democrats? Because that's literally the only way anything is going to happen, and even then, it will require a super majority in order for anything to be not filibustered to death.

That's the real question. And from where I'm sitting, and from the polls I've seen, neither Republicans or Democrats look to gain enough seats in either setting to gain a super majority. Which makes the Presidency pretty much irrelevant. What? You think the Democrats aren't going to turn around and do the exact same thing the GoP has done to Obama? Seriously? I guess you haven't been paying attention because the gridlock has become more and more pronounced over the past 3 Presidential elections.

So, enjoy the absolutely paltry difference in approval for either side, and then enjoy the Government doing jack squat for another 4 years.

How many times do Obama's supporters need to realize the results of his failed policies? The answers is: They will never see or admit Obama's failures - because Obama and his party are bribing their allegiance with hand outs and crony politics. What Obama promised was "hope and change." What America got was fear and blame. Blame Bush, blame the European economy - Obama is a national joke, but nobody here is laughing.

How many times will the folks who simply hate Obama realize that it takes more than a sitting President to pass legislation? Did they suddenly forget that it requires cooperation between the House (Republican controlled) and Senate (Democrat controlled)? It appears not, because apparently every law that's passed these past 3.5 years Obama created, voted into law, and signed all by himself.

                                          Grow up.

And well might he. The president's response to this latest news was to ask Congress to do something. Nothing demonstrates how clueless the president is about jobs. Congress does nor create jobs, at least not productive ones, businesses do. If these small and medium sized businesses were not so hampered, no make that crippled by onerous chicken manure regulations they just might be able to take on more workers. In stead of calling on Congress why does the president not call on the business community for suggestions? if Obama had just once in his life had to make a payroll in the real world of business and commerce he might now better understand why going to Congress for jobs is a fool's errand.

All those agencies you mentioned produce no thing of value, only a service of dubious necessity. This explains why the DC area is actually thriving in the midst of an economic downturn and why the folks in that region are prospering , prospering as a bloated bureaucratic elite while ignorant of the suffering in the rest of the country. God help us if Congress does pass another "jobs" bill. The only new hires will be more government drones who will justify their new positions by hampering any real economic recovery with their inane interference and regulation.

I maintain that if we cut the Federal Government's agencies, most of them, the only change we would notice is the saving of money.

It will help by reducing the costs of government, enabling taxes to be reduced thereby putting more spendable cash into the pockets of American consumers and ridding the scene of federal regulators who keep finding things to regulate to justify their existence on the government payroll. These parasites produce nothing of value. They inhibit creativity and productivity and serve as dead weight on the backs of those entrepreneurs who would invest their capital to grow manufacturing, producing tangible wealth in the form of goods and tangible recovery in the form of jobs. Obama and his ilk have no conception of what will create productive jobs if they think calling on Congress to create jobs is the way to go to restore prosperity. Those states that cut their government work force were able to turn crushing budget deficits into modest surpluses resulting in the lowering of state and local tax rates. Those that refused to go this route, California and Obama's Illinois come to mind, are close to fiscal collapse. Experience runs an expensive school but fools will learn in no other.

                                              Kevin McGonigal

It will help by reducing the costs of government, enabling taxes to be reduced thereby putting more spendable cash into the pockets of American consumers and ridding the scene of federal regulators who keep finding things to regulate to justify their existence on the government payroll.

What's with the anti-public worker sentiment around here??? If you don't like people on the government payroll, why aren't you bitching about our men and women in uniform?? And tax cuts don't work; check the Bush tax cuts and their negligible effect on the economy. Plus the government usually is better at spending money to generate economic growth in a recession, as they don't put money into savings accounts or use it to pay off credit cards.

They inhibit creativity and productivity and serve as dead weight on the backs of those entrepreneurs who would invest their capital to grow manufacturing, producing tangible wealth in the form of goods and tangible recovery in the form of jobs.

Actually, government workers create demand in the private sector, creating jobs and a measure of economic growth that encourages investment and innovation and creativity on the part of the private sector. Not to mention that the regulators keep the investors and bankers from getting too big and manipulating the market for their own schemes. And wasn't it a lack of regulation that caused the financial crash???

Obama and his ilk have no conception of what will create productive jobs if they think calling on Congress to create jobs is the way to go to restore prosperity. Those states that cut their government work force were able to turn crushing budget deficits into modest surpluses resulting in the lowering of state and local tax rates.

Tax cuts DO NOT WORK. Those states that laid off workers made unemployment 1% higher; if they had retained those workers, unemployment would be at 7.1% and our economy would be better. And since when should you balance budgets during a recession??? I know about the balanced budget amendments, but those are stupid. They force states to make devastating cuts that hurt both education and the economy in the long-term just to satisfy the demands of some crazed fiscal hawks.

Those that refused to go this route, California and Obama's Illinois come to mind, are close to fiscal collapse. Experience runs an expensive school but fools will learn in no other.

Well, here in California we are suffering because of stupid actions like Prop 13 that damaged our education system and our unfortunate reliance on property taxes as a source of income. And I do believe that Illinois is leading in job creation, are they not??? Deficits don't matter during recessions; it's the economy, stupid. That's where you focus during a recession; if everyone balanced their budgets during a recession, we would still be in a recession.

Romney and the GOP are celebrating, champagne corks are popping, Karl Rove, PhuckedNoose are besides themselves, yeehaaa, wooohooo!!! They are doing it, they are succeeding in their strategery of blocking, obstructing every move forward, every compromise, every statesman-like gesture by the President to undo Dubya and the GOP's mess of the previous administration 8 years that brought us to this point, and now Romney and the GOP are saying "I told you so!" to America, they are saying, "You see now, folks? Barack Obama cannot solve the mess we made, and even if he is trying and things are headed in the right direction, he cannot succeed without us lifting a finger, and he's not doing it fast enough, he can't solve the mess we created over 8 years overnight, how can we keep him for another term when he can't make us do a thing for America, that's why it's his fault, yeeehaaaa, we be making him a one-term Prezdent, yeeehaaa!"

The economy is totally the fault of the obstructionist, do-nothing-to-help GOP! We don't expect that Obama will be able to turn the disasters around that Bush created in three short years, especially with a congress that is committed to be AGAINST ANYTHING he wants to do.

Just keep on passing those anti-abortion, anti-gay, anti-environmental laws GOP!!! Those really create JOBS.

I love how everyone is writing off Obama as a one term president, when in the ONLY poll romney is close to Obama is the "White Male" voter

Obama as the majority of Women, Latinos, Black people ect.

Sorry, Reagan is dead and Bush is gone. The only socialist I see in Congress is Bernie Sanders, and thank God he is still around. Obama is more of a moderate, but you conservatives just like to call him a socialist for the hell of it. How would you like it if I called Romney a Nazi??? Would you like it??? So shut the hell up and try using a good argument, Jason.
