More 2012: Judge strikes down FL voter-registration measure

FLORIDA: “A federal judge on Thursday struck down a key part of Florida's recently revamped election laws, saying the Legislature's restrictions have made it "risky business" for third-party groups to register new voters,” the Tampa Bay Times/Miami Herald write. “U.S. District Judge Robert Hinkle told the state it cannot require groups to submit voter registration forms within 48 hours or face $1,000 fines. Nor can the state force those groups to disclose names of volunteers who don't collect the forms, Hinkle ruled.”

“A lawsuit brought by the League of Women Voters and New York University School of Law's Brennan Center for Justice ends with a ruling -- cheered by Democrats -- halting implementation of some pieces of a controversial Florida voter registration law,” Politico writes.

“The Justice Department ordered Florida's elections division to halt a systematic effort to find and purge the state's voter rolls of noncitizen voters,” the Miami Herald writes. “Florida's effort appears to violate both the 1965 Voting Rights Act, which protects minorities, and the 1993 National Voter Registration Act, which governs voter purges, T. Christian Herren Jr., the Justice Department's lead civil rights lawyer, wrote in a letter sent late Thursday night.”

WISCONSIN: “The outcome of the election on Tuesday will not just decide the state’s leanings on matters of budget, taxes and policy, as well as the ultimate trajectory of Mr. Walker’s fast-rising political prospects. It will also send a message about a larger fight over labor across the country, and about whether voters are likely to reject those who cut collective bargaining rights, as Governor Walker did here last year for most of the state’s public workers, setting off this battle in the first place,” the New York Times writes. “Broadly, the results will be held up as an omen for the presidential race in the fall, specifically for President Obama’s chances of capturing this Midwestern battleground — one that he easily won in 2008 but that Republicans nearly swept in the midterm elections of 2010.”

But would a Walker win really impact November’s election? A Marquette poll out Wednesday showed Walker leading by seven points, but Obama leading by eight.

“The first vote hasn’t been cast in the recall election of Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker, yet labor unions already are offering excuses for why their efforts to oust him could fall short,” Bloomberg reports. “The election is no longer a fight over workers’ rights to engage in collective bargaining, which sparked the recall, union leaders say. The debate has turned to the economy and negative campaigning. In addition, they say, recall supporters are facing a significant financial disadvantage after Walker raised more than $20 million this year -- five times that of his opponent -- in his quest to keep his job.”

no, selecting American citizens just because they have "funny" names or are Democrats or are Independents or are minorities is a big no-no.

And that's 5 months before the election.

And that's in a state that elected Bush by 500 votes and pregnant chads.

By the way: don't mistake voter registration fraud with voter fraud. Dead people/duplicate names/ineligible names on the registration list does not equal voting fraud. It means an outdated registration list which they can start updating on November 7, 2012.

The voter fraud is like 0.00003% That's more accurate than a DNA test. The accepted standard for DNA testing is 99.5%

Will you people STFU about the voter fraud? Not one Republican has been able to prove it so let it go along with Obama's place of birth!

The registration process is where fraud is caught, and it has been made more difficult due to fears that illegals might try to vote. Fair enough.

But once a person becomes registered, how does purging the rolls, or requiring photo ID help prevent fraud? It doesn't. Anyone can get a drivers license--you don't have to be a citizen in many states. The purging in Florida is being stopped because at least 60% are minorities. Have you heard of civil rights, profiling, targeting? PULEEZE, take your bloviating ignoramouse mentality elsewhere.

This is an even more blatant attempt by Rick "Voldermort" Scott to repeat what Katherine Harris did to steal the election in 2000. The election was so close in Florida that the number of voters purged from the polls would have made a difference. The judge allowed the shorter early registration to stand. Same-day registration, and of course ID laws are still being contested -- Isn't that enough for you Haters?

Thank goodness the purge has been stopped, as well as the ridiculous 48-hour submission of registrations or having to face criminal charges in Florida. Criminal prosecution -- WTF?! Now we have Citizen's United and unlimited, untraceable money to contend with as well. Stand up for democracy you fools.

The Republicans are "worried" about some names on the regostration list - like it's a flesh eating disease, yet, they hold the job for a Secretary of State that committed voter fraud. The person who is in charge of voting commits a voter fraud and it's no big deal but they will go after a 91yr old WW2 vet.

    Bunch of lying hypocrites!

If every American can be issued a social security number, then I see no reason why a voter ID card cannot be issued to these same people...

This is America! Many have died for the right to vote... For any party to try and restrict voting should be a crime...

because this has nothing to do with voter fraud (which no Republican has been able to prove). It has to do with eliminating the inconvenient vote.

Issuing everyone a voter ID, for free, would make sense. It has to be free because the government cannot charge $ to vote, and charging for an ID to vote would mean that. It also cannot be a process 5 months before a presidential election. The day after would be a great start.

this is so stupid it is funny. If you want to vote, get off your ass get a voter ID card, which most people have and go vote. No one is telling anyone they are not aloud to vote. If you are not alive and here illegal, then guess what, you can't vote. For God sakes people, no one is denying anyone of anything!! Put it this way, if we all showed a voter ID card there would be no reason for a RECOUNT!!!

The whole ACORN false scandal was to stop voter registration. Now they are after The League of Women Voters. Poor people and minorities vote their interests. Republicans are making it very difficult for them to even vote.

Why win an election by getting the majority of votes when you can steal an election by preventing people from voting at all? Unions and other Democrat constituencies are under republican voter suppression attack by laws and union busting. Corruption is rampant from virtual bribery to anti-democracy attack in order to grab power.

I think you need to go do your homework!! It says NONCITIZEN voters, what part of that do you not get?? No one is denying any minority the right to vote. You libs can spin everything. I guess you are all for illegals voting??

plsthink90 - you should do your homework as well. The operative word here is "non-citizen" which, in Florida's application, turns out to be subjective in definition. When you question the citizenship of a 91 year old man born in Brooklyn, NY (therefore a citizen per the Constitution), served in the US Army in WWII (therefore entitled to citizenship) at the Battle of the Bulge (therefore put his life on the line for me AND you) and has been voting for years in New York and Florida (therefore either a citizen or one heck of a con man). I am no lib, nor am I a conservative, but I am a born and bred American & Viet Nam vet who says what Florida, and several other states, are doing vis-a-vis voting right now is un-American and the lot of them should rot in Leavenworth.
