Romney claims Solyndra is Obama's 'Symbol of Failure'

Justin Sullivan / Getty Images

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney speaks during news conference in front the shuttered Solyndra solar power company's manufacturing facility Thursday.

SAN DIEGO -- The Romney campaign has moved quickly to exploit the candidate's unannounced visit to bankrupt solar energy company Solyndra, producing a web ad entitled "Symbol of Failure," designed to highlight the president's role in the failed business.

The ad intersperses audio from national news broadcasts' coverage of the bankruptcy and subsequent federal investigation of Solyndra (including NBC's coverage), with clips of Barack Obama visiting the plant in 2010, and Romney's press conference there Thursday.

Graphics highlight what the Romney campaign is presenting as the vital statistics of the Solyndra failure, which took place after a series of federal loan guarantees were put in place which Republicans decried as the height of cronyism: 1,100 employees laid off, $535 million in taxpayer dollars spent.

After Tuesday's Texas GOP primary, Mitt Romney was able to clinch the party's nomination with more than the 1,144 delegates needed. Vanity Fair's Carl Bernstein and the Washington Post's David Ignatius join a conversation on why the race between Romney and Obama is so close. The panel also discusses Romney's recent hits against Solyndra.

The quick-turnaround ad comes as the Romney and Obama campaigns are concluding a week spent battling over Romney's record as governor of Massachusetts, and the salience of his role as CEO of Bain Capital when it comes to expertise creating jobs -- not just wealth for investors.

Thursday, the political theater reached its zenith (or nadir - depending on your perspective) with dueling press conferences on the East and West coasts, as Obama campaign strategist David Axelrod attacked Romney's record as governor in Boston, and Romney attacked the president's record, standing on a highway median in front of the vacant Solyndra headquarters in Fremont.

“Two years ago, President Obama was here to tout this building and this business as a symbol of the success of his stimulus. Well you can see that it’s a symbol of something very different today. It’s a symbol not of success, but of failure,” Romney is shown saying near the close of the 1:38 second web video, as uplifting music begins to play.

"I can tell you that my experience in the economy tells me how it is businesses make decisions to hire people in America. I want to use that knowledge to get Americans working again. The idea of 23 million American families out of work or stopped looking for work or underemployed is unacceptable and crony capitalism like this did not help,” the ad concludes.

The truth is that this program started in 2005 with President George W. Bush. It was continued by President Obama and this amounts to less than 5% of that program. This program is still a necessary part of the future energy puzzle. Luddites will deny the need for alternate energy and recall fondly the steam engine and coal stoves and state that the verdict is still out on electricity.

I just saw a little blip about the Texas Teachers Retirement Fund being invest in casino's and losing big money. Casino's that invested in the Rick Perry campaign. I need to go find out more about that. It's just never ending with these losers.

How odd. I thought his specialty was firing, not hiring. When did that change? And as to crony capitalism, he should know all about that because you couldn't even get a seat at the table to talk to him or Bain for less than a million dollars. That sounds a little like cronyism to me. Does this man know how to open his mouth without lying?

Romney's business experience was a well funded company by very wealthy investors; the goal of the company was to make money for that limited group.

They did not care about the lives they destroyed along the way.

Hey Ronney,

Why don't you tell the truth by standing on " Corporate Banking background"?

"This is what happens when GOP treats Corporation as Your leader "

The budget that is being debated so heavily in Congress and the Senate is "only" $3.5 trillion. Take all of the outrage and debate over the $1.5 trillion deficit into consideration, and swallow this Red pill.

In late 2008, the TARP Bailout bill was passed and loans of $800 billion were given to failing banks and companies. That was a blatant lie considering the fact that Goldman Sachs alone received 814 billion dollars. As is turns out, the Federal Reserve donated $2.5 trillion to Citigroup, while Morgan Stanley received $2.04 trillion. The Royal Bank of Scotland and Deutsche Bank, a German bank, split about a trillion and numerous other banks received hefty chunks of the $16 trillion.

G.W.Bush $16,000,000,000,000.00 Contract had been secretly given out to US banks and corporations and foreign banks everywhere from France to Scotland. From the period between December 2007 and June 2010.

The Federal Reserve had secretly bailed out many of the world's banks, corporations, and governments. The Federal Reserve likes to refer to these secret bailouts as an all-inclusive loan program, but virtually none of the money has been returned and it was loaned out at 0% interest.

Why must you mentioned the only not even a billion Green-Earth projects?

Must I SPELL OUT in details to you where this 16 trillion went?

I must had forgotten that all GOPers have Balzheimer's disease

The truth is that if we followed your narrow minded thought process we would not have most drugs or electric/hybrid cars on the market today. Billions of dollars is spend on R&D failures before the right product is developed. Car automakers would have dumped hybrids or EVs long time ago because they are not money makers for them.

Driving through Lancaster County, PA the other day, I was amazed how many people have solar panels on their roofs. Progress costs money - lots of money. If it was easy to be successful at something all the time, every time, everyone would be doing it.

Romney has some of the same things happen to him while Governor of Mass., Romney also lied yesterday while giving his speech when he said it was investigated and found Obama gave money to friends (this is a lie and Romney knows its a lie). Fact check most of what Romney says and you will find he mostly lies. Now if you want to vote for someone that doesnt care that he lies to you with a straight face, by all means do so. But dont come back in a year crying that you were lied to. Romney doesnt care about anyone, not his rich buddies and certainly not the people of the USA. Romney is a rich little boy that has bought everything he has ever wanted, now he wants to buy the presidency and you righties are going to let him do it. Then when he takes everything away from you that you love you will finally see what he is all about.

@ksw62118"Yes but in Solyndra it is

Romney's company received millions in tax subsidies and as they ripped off
employee’s pensions guesses who was left to pay that bill? That’s right tax
payers paid for all the pensions Romney pocketed & he did because he knew
that the government will pick up the tab. My, doesn’t that sound like a welfare
queen without the dignity of work he yaps about all the time. Even his Olympics
claim, when you look closer at the stubborn facts you will know that Romney was
failing at being able to manage the Olympics UNTIL the federal government came
in and provided funds which then saved the Olympics. Romney is a coddled
government leech. His claims of his father being poor are a lie as well. Romney’s
father had a damn pony at the age of 5 for Pete’s sake. His family received
refugee funds given out by the government when they escaped Mexico’s wars. Romney’s
grandfather used that money to make a home for himself then start a profitable
home building company. Romney’s family also SUED the Mexican government &
was awarded compensation. All of Romney’s life the government has had his back
and provided a stepping stone to become successful. Now a day Romney says screws
everyone else. Government money is only for the rich.

I am still waiting to hear exactly what Romney has done for this economy in any form. Even his position at Bain was not one to create jobs...it was all about making MORE profits for BAin. Nothing he, Romney has said so far shows that he is capable of running this country..Bush and his republican ideas put this country into the debt we have today..and Romney and his republican friends want to make it worse with even more tax cuts..along with cuts to everything else..except of course, any thing that has to do with big business. Romney has NEVER walked in the shoes of the middle class, he has no idea what the middle class has to do to make ends meet today....and he and his republican friends could care less about the general pubic as a whole. Nor do they care about those on SS, medicare or medicaid. Granted...there is abuse in both medicaid and medicare..but..just who's fault is that.? Politicans ...looking for more votes...including the republicans...Which direction do we as a nation want this country to go in...one that takes care of its own..or one that is only concerned with the welfare of the wealthy and their increased profits..for as long as it can last ??

One thing for sure is that Obama never would have made it as a venture capitalist. Bain Capital would have been belly up with Obama at the helm. Obama doesn't seem capable of picking the winner of a one horse race. We have endured 3.5 years of record deficits, an anemic economy, division, hatred, and blame. This country has suffered enough under Obama. It is time for Obama to ride off into the sunset with the lavish perks and benefits afforded all presidents, even failures like Obama. Yes we can has been replaced by why we couldn't. If Obama had a record to run on, he would.

that's ok, Rick -- because almost 2/3 of the Venture Capitalists in the US, who had been successful for many years, were bankrupted during the Dumbya Bush years, especially when Dumbya collapsed the Housing and Banking Markets and introduced America to the Bush Recession that we've all been enjoying.

So, Obama will never be able to claim the body count that GOP Dumbya Bush racked up.

Only when the GOP is soundly drummed from office will they understand that they were elected to represent the American People, not just the rich ones.

I am an Independent as well; I believe it is just the opposite way though. You all say Bush was bad and he was but one of the greatest bitc*es the Lib Dem had was about his spending. Obama has over sent Bush and there are no two ways about it. Bush spent $4.5 trillion in 8 years Obama has spent $5.2 trillion in three years and is asking for $1.2 for t6his year. Now you say Bush sucks up to the rich well so does Obama. Obama is rich you didn't see Obama selling $40 dollar plates at any function. He is for illegal immigration that hurts America no matter what the Lib Dem's say. He is against state in forcing immigration law even though the government will not enforce it. He is against voter ID; I wonder why that is could it be so the illegals can vote for him? He gave his top contributors at three solar company’s money that totaled just under $1 trillion of our tax payers’ dollars.

We need some in the White House that is a leader, Obama is not that person he is a boy in the world of men. He does not have nor has he learned the lessons that should warrant another chance. Obama himself said if I have not turned the country around in 4 years I should not get a second term, well the country has not turned around the unemployment is still above 8% it should be down at 7% with as much money Obama has dumped into our system to falsely inflate the GDP.

HERE IS THE BIGGEST REASON AFTER 3.5 YEARS IF YOU CANOOT STOP BLAMING THE PREVIOUS ADMIASTRATION YOU SHOULDN"T BE IN THE WHITE HOUSE. This is all Obama keeps is blaming Bush who has been out of office now for 3.5 years man up and make tough unpopular decisions to get our country back on the right track.

The total collapse of the system was brought on by Clinton and him telling banks they needed to loan money to people who could not afford to pay their mortgages back or over bought, here are just a few web sites that back my claim up

There are many other symbols of failure. Like the complete lack of honor and ethics unsurpassed in american political history brought by the GOP. The republican leadership the last 3.5 years OBVIOUSLY have become so polarized as to cost this country it's honor. Republicans are continueing to bring the biggest failure in our country's history. Self respect. Only a polarized fool can not see this simple truth. The GOP has EARNED nothing in this next election. Only the insecure and uninformed will vote republican. It has nothing to do with "party". Go to governmentgonewild.com and look at "the list" where they list members of "both" sides of the aisle who have profited the most while our country was in a financial tailspin. Both sides watered down the bill against them using information gained in office to profit in the stock market, to where it's no more than a slap on the wrist, or impossible to prosecute. Greed, and corruption are not strangers to either party. Ever notice that when they can't do their jobs in bringing in a budget, the first people they threaten are the most deserving, and vulnerable saying military, and medicare checks will not go out. Never their paychecks, or checks that pay for their perks! And they're they ones who failed!

Well, let's see there, William Root... We're still feeling the effects from a Bush Recession, the magnitude of which cannot disappear overnight. It is a fact that it takes longer to rebuild something than it does to destroy something, no matter who would come in as President after Dumbya Bush to clean up his mess.

I agree it takes longer to build than destroy! But what exactly has been done by this administration for the 3 1/2 years they've been in office? I'm not looking for a "problem solved" answer, just a "it's better since I took office answer". And before you dazzle me with your brilliance, consider that the numbers of people on Food Stamps have "increased every month" this administration has been in office. If anything improved, you'd think those numbers would go down for at least one month!

http://www.fns.usda.gov/pd/34SNAPmonthly.htm

For the fiscal year (FY) of 2009 there were 33,489,975 people participating in the Food Stamp program.

Those numbers have risen, and not shown any decline in any month since 2009.

The latest figures for the FY 2012, Feb 2012 show 46,326,352 people participating in the Food Stamp program.

How many cowards did your momma raise? I mean, seriously, what does it take for the right wing to gather up enough courage to man-up and own their crap? Do you think nothing remains Dumbya's fault just because he took his bags and (finally) walked out of the White House??

cal20: rocky: a little partisan? or a Union hack? The economy tanked the last 2 years of Bush because of the Reid- Pelosi congress. Review Billi summary 5 posts above.

Cal. Have some self-respect and stop the lies.

The Bush Recession describes a collapse of the banking and housing markets. The secondary market (do you even KNOW what the Secondary Market is? -- i doubt you do) – was collapsing due to defaulting short-term refinance and HELOC loans that had largely begun getting awarded in 2002/03. The failure of the secondary market was already apparent in 2005, it was already starting back then. This is what caused banking to collapse, and this collapse initially started in 2005 when the first wave of defaults began to show up; it picked up speed by 2006, and was in full swing by 2007. Sorry, but even though Nancy Pelosi seems to cause you some urinary tract infections, she and the DEMs had nothing to do with the Dumbya Bush/GOP-caused collapse of the houseing and banking markets. You really need to watch something other than Faux Noise.

I'm willing to see this as a partial failure on Obama's part if, and only if the Conservatives accept the truth that their failed policies led to the recession of '07, the economic meltdown of '08, the huge debt caused by two unfunded wars, deficit spending from 2001 to 2008, the socialization of the banks, Wall Street, Medicare Part D, and the truth of Romney's record as governor, and his roles in and records with Bain!

Sure William Root. Glad to answer your questions.

Firstly, the reason why more people are utilizing the Food Stamp Program in the last three years. Well, during the last three years, we have seen significant changes in ARRA and FCEA legislation which finally ALLOWS more people to utilize the program, including military personnel who, prior to these changes, were forced to utilize their entire military income, including combat-related military pay, when determining food-stamp eligibility and benefit levels. This is no longer the case. Of course, people like you hate the military, so using them as part of this demonizing the food stamp program just because the military and their families have greater access and benefit levels that they need, is really pretty disgusting and cowardly. These changes have also eliminated the cap on deductions for dependent care expenses and allows families (including military families) to subtract the entire amount of dependent care expenses when calculating eligibility and benefit levels. This brings more families to the Food Stamp Program and also allows them the benefits they need to feed their kids.

There is a lot more to it than simply those examples, but it tells you why there is greater usage, and it also shows one of the reasons why it's better "now" than it was "then".

Also, millions of people lost their retirement investments since the Dumbya Bush recession hit, dropping the bottom out of the stock market. What has gotten better? Market recovery. Just look at the simple market analysis over time, Dumbya Bush vs Obama. The results: G.W. Bush - negative 3.5 percent annually. Obama - positive 20.1 percent annually. Fact: The US stock market performed better under Obama than G.W. Bush by a staggering 23.6 percentage points a year.

My comments about cowardly liars still stands.

Cheers!

Oh, and by the way, in true Republican form, the GOP's led by John Boner, are trying to cut these programs for our military families, and maintain all the huge contracts for their rich friends (like Halliburton) who deal (steal?) with the Pentagon.

Can't get around the Food Stamp numbers can you? I see no links to validate your answers, did you forget? You must've been an accountant for ENRON, their figures weren't validated either!

Keep up the stupid personal attacks. U.S.M.C. 1964 - 1968, yeah, I hate the military!

Cowardly liars? Lets see, you have my "real name", "where I live", and everyone knows that anyone who hides their identity, where they live, and makes personal attacks behind that brave anonymity is not a coward, but a brave, and honorable individual who is not ashamed of their views, or opinions! Or is "afraid" to be associated with their own personal attacks of others they know nothing about!

Go back to your cell, video game, room, or wherever your kind feels safe. And let the honorable men, and women debate issues without making juvenile personal attacks on each other!

Come back when you grow up!

William, I gave you the info you needed to look it up yourself, as well as anyone else reading this. Know how to use Google? I assumed that even someone in Smallpenis, Illinois, could use Google...

Did you see where I mentioned ARRA and FCEA legislation, and mentioned a couple parts of the legislation I'm familiar with? Do you know what ARRA and FCEA are, punkin? I notice you had a sock in your mouth when it came to my market numbers -- so obviously you were able to look those up and see that i'm right there, too. (snifffle, whimper, whine...)

there wont be many dems on here shooting there mouths of when it comes to the truth.

You won't see too many zealots of any stripe seeking or necessarily spouting the the truth - here or anywhere else for the next few months.

Solyndra is interesting regarding their technology, their dishonest / misleading marketing regarding their efficiency, and the impact of a global drop in solar cell prices. Had it not been for the timing of the latter, they might have had a shot at surviving. However; when prices plummeted for traditional technology, their market advantage went away.

Hahaha, Romney thought he was being so clever to sneak a speech in front of Solyndra while his staff and aids orchestrated heckling of David Axelrod in Massachusetts. Nonetheless, politicians who worked with Romney when he was governor, gave testimony to his failed record. Aside from the fact that neither event received live coverage due to the Edwards trial, note a couple of things.

1) There is a BIG difference between spontaneous heckling of Romney from a crowd (e.g., the video on "corporations are people") and gleefully taking credit for orchestrating Town Hall-style drowning out--not just heckling--as Romney has.

2) Romney's paranoid stunt merely drew attention to this:

Many people are criticizing President Barack Obama for the failedSolyndra debacle. However, if you look across Party lines, you'll see that one of his main competitors in this year's U.S. presidential race, Mitt Romney, has had similar failures of his own – green technology investments that also have gone belly-up but aren't quite getting the same amount of press.

...For instance, Romney gave $1.5 million to solar company Konarka and $2.5 million to Evergreen Solar. Romney even announced plans to remove $15 million from the state's renewable energy trust fund and to allot it for the development of a private venture capital outfit that would financially support green companies.

However, Evergreen Solar eventually filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2011. Several other companies that received aid from the Massachusetts Green Energy Fund also met a similar fate. For example, the fuel cell company CTP Hydrogen Inc., which also was backed by this green fund, laid off most of its staff of 10 individuals and closed its doors in 2008. The Colorado plant of Protonex Technology Corp. – a fuel cell company that additionally was an initial member of the green energy fund – further facilitated layoffs in 2010 despite receiving government aid.

Why does Romney try to attack the president on issues that will draw media attention to his own failures?

rico-3714896

So Realist Pondering do you think Rummy is so stupid that he doesn't know when this Solandra thing started or do you think he counts on his constituency being so uninformed that they'll believe this drivel? That's the teahdist...manipulate and tell half truths.

Yes Rico, Romney counts on his low-information supporters. But Romney also says "What's sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander" as justification for bald-faced LIES (e.g., taking the president's statements out of context in his ad) and now orchestrated drown-outs. This also makes one question Romney's maturity, mental competency, and general temperament to be POTUS yet again.

But for these guys to seriously believe the White House would sabotage a Romney press conference is deeply strange, and more than a little paranoid.

Are we to believe Romney and his team would function this way if elected?

It is said that the way a candidate runs a campaign is the way they would govern. This makes the idea of a Romney presidency even more disturbing.

Bill,

You all say Bush was bad and he was but one of the greatest bitc*es the Lib Dem had was about his spending.

No it was much more about the Treason and Lives he tossed away in Iraq, and the ad naseum 911 excuse for furthering the MIC and Oil Cartel Initiatives. Much of the World is still suffering from his Presidential Puppet Reign and New World Disorder. The War spending, yes, I will continue to bitch about when it is another protracted loser and death trap. Iraq, and now Afghanistan come to mind...Iran and/or Syria anyone? Nation Building needs to end, but the War Profiteer$ will never let that happen.

His being in Office(W) when the Bail Outs were instrumented by the self-serving Fed(Paulson, Bernanke, Etc) were not his choice, just as continuing TARP was not in Obama's. Iraq just happened to fall in place with BushII's personal values, which lead him to pitch it with such fervor and genuineness. Obama has allowed so many of the Previous Admin's Policies and Wars and Spending and Big Energy Support Groups that it cracks me up to see the Repuplican/TPers attacking him so viciously, when they are still collecting their subsidies and Tax Gains. The Humanity of it all....

They all just selectively accept the responsibility for actions when it suites them/their Administrations. It is a Puppet Show, My Friends, and Mitt is a Muppet, with the full force of the Corporate Hand up his arse. They just can't seem to get the Mouth Part working very well yet...

By Default,

Obama/? 2012!

And I have always said I would bet Partying w/ W would have me laughing my ass off! He seems like a funny guy, if he ain't ruining the World. That part stopped a lot of the laughs. He and W and Family had a very civil ceremony at the WH, and that was a good thing.

After all, who hates a good Puppet Show!

I think it's probably time to admit that this wasn't just a recession. It was a depression. And while the brakes were applied, we haven't broken its back. And we're unlikely to as long as international economies are intertwined and others like the EU are on the ropes. India has slowed,.China has slowed. This was many years in the making, actually I would say decades, and it won't be fixed in 3 years, especially when you have a big chunk of the political system ABSOLUTELY DEDICATED TO MAKING SURE IT STAYS BROKEN.

This is a very big and complex problem and won't be fixed by a band-aid like cutting taxes. No one is going to get us rolling again quickly. If Romney "creates 500,000 jobs a month, they will be Taco Bell jobs for 7$/hr with no benefits except being abused daily while you help an owner get rich.

There are so many Romney lies it's hard to choose which is worse, but in relation to this topic, Romney LIED yet again with this statement in front of the Solyndra plant:

“It’s also a symbol of a serious conflict of interest. An independent inspector general looked at this investment and concluded that the administration had steered money to friends and family – to campaign contributors. This building, this half a billion dollar taxpayer investment, represents a serious conflict of interest on the part of the president and his team.”

“It’s also a symbol of how the president thinks about free enterprise,” said Romney. “Free enterprise to the president means taking money from the taxpayers and giving it freely to his friends.”

Romney is taking this LIE from a dubious author, but both failed to fact check -- Though in Romney's case I doubt facts matter. The inspector referenced did investigate Solyndra dealings and found nothing illegal or unethical.

Stop the LIES, stop this depression now, throw out the Teapublicans -- Obama/Biden and Pelosi & Reid - 2012!

Obama is nothing but a community organizer, he will never get past that mentality, he has no idea of how to make money, or what it takes to make money, all he knows how to do is spend other peoples money. Obama is anti business unless its his brand of ideological business (green), if its not green, he wants it to fail, he cant help it, thats who he is. If he had any sense the first thing he would have done after taking office is gather all the business leaders and manufacturing leaders and said "tell me what it will take to bring you back to the U.S. and I will make it happen", but he didnt, his ideology wont let him do that. You can bet the first thing Romney will do is find out what it will take, and make it happen.

He had his chance, he couldnt get the job done, its time to give somebody else a chance.

    #1.62 - Fri Jun 1, 2012 3:17 PM EDT

Steve -2081387..... Actually, there was a meeting that occured at the whitehouse during the first 6 months of 2009. I doubt if any realistic ideas came out of it. Sorry to say, this president may have all the right intentions but if congress & business leaders are commited to bringing him down as a one term president, they are succeeding.

I recall that the first time news of Solyndra going under came out, there was an article that GAO found descrepancies with the company during vetting process, yet the loans was pushed through and expedited at some point. We will never know if Obama was lied to or someone else with a personal agenda was behind to push the loan thru knowing this will be a bad record for the President Obama.

If congress is aware of this GAO findings and they did not stop it, like what they have been doing on almost everything, they are just as guilty and it is pretty much a symbol of their failure if that is how Mr. Romney wants to frame it.

They will, when this story and campaign tactic is revealed for its half truths. People keep forgetting to look at what really caused Solyndra's downfall...the world economic crisis that caused the cancellation of many orders from Europe (their primary customers) and China's repeated state-subsidized solar industry that pirates US copyrights, etc., then gluts the market with their underpriced merchandise. This isn't the only business that has been destroyed by the actions of the Chinese. That is why you see all of the stories recently about the US and Europe starting to assess massive duties on Chinese products. I was actually communicating with the company about residential applications of their solar design because they had developed a real break-through in energy efficiency in their tubular solar design. I wish they had been able to continue in business.

This "failure" you are spouting off about belongs to the Tea/GOP.

The TRUE FAILURE is that YOU, Mr. Romney, are a NORQUIST PLEDGER... YOU signed that pledge to put the 1% wealthy ahead of the United Sttes of America didn't you.

Norquist said his group plans to spend about $8 million in the campaign season preceding the Nov. 6 elections, highlighting candidates who have signed the pledge and those who have not.

Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney has signed the pledge. So did nine of the 10 initial Republican presidential candidates.

Norquist's pledge, which started in 1986, has become Republican dogma for many federal or local party candidates.

Only six Republicans in the House of Representatives have not signed the pledge. Seven Republican senators have not signed.

Yes, Anti trust proponent, good points! :) I hate this and it really is sad that so many people are still being lied to and believing what Romney is attempting to claim about Solyndra. What planet is he on? Anyone educated has already looked into the reality of the situation. No one in their right mind, with what is going on these days like nukey tuna, should stunt conversion to the new clean technologies or businesses trying to supply the demand for any kind of residential needs for solar heating supplements or wind VAWTS (Vertical Wind Turbines) in their private homes or the greening of buildings, cars, etc.! What is wrong with this supposed conservative attacking independent decentralized business enterprises? Rather contradictory isn't it? I guess its just that this one got a lot of support and enthusiasm from people Romney does not like?

      http://www.politifact.com/florida/statements/2011/nov/15/americans-prosperity/solyndra-ad-president-barack-obama-taxpayer-money/

So they just keep lying in the face of facts like they did with the birthing thing. People out there who have a limited access to media will only hear the right wing messages on their TV stations locally, or their a.m. radio station talk shows. They keep believing the lines and it is so sickening to hear these politicians continuing so blatantly to go so far in the face of our knowledge that what they are saying is not grounded on any truth, lacking any real details, mostly false claims.

How can people vote for a politician who lies and claims that those who know the facts are the liars? They bank on the probability that too many Americans are not educated, will believe hearsay, and not check or do any research even on a computer to google up sites that can explain...because they do not know how to? They do not go there? They are too fearful or lazy? They only believe what their pastor or clean looking guy who poses as a fine upstanding business man will tell them? They hope to get some future pay off or crumbs of kindness from the elite? What is this stupidity in these people who are usually so poor that they are somewhat naive and localized in their knowledge or point of view?

Even the small town hick knows that the clean cut businessman or salesman is out to get your money! Nothing new here! This is your door to door salesman. Your used car dealer. They want your money. They have the whole deck stacked to keep your money coming in to them. If you do not believe this, just take utilities...your own monthly bill will be the ultimate proof in the pudding regarding your own place of living. I say place of living because so many folks have been kicked out of the homes they once were trying to buy and become the owners of. Unless you have paid off your mortgage and can pay your property tax every year, you are not a homeowner. You are renting or in a contract where you are still buying from the owners.

Whatever, rent, own, or buying; if you pay an electric bill or a gas bill...look at it. Gas bill....even PUCO knows this...nothing hidden or mysterious here. You now pay nearly 25 dollars a month just to keep your gas service turned on...before you pay for the actual product! No matter how little you use or try to keep your gas down, the majority of your bill is not the unit cost if you are thrifty in a medium sized home or apartment, it is the set service and distribution, paper work cost or whatever they wish to define this other stuff they add on, which changes month to month... (usually an increase). How about the estimated meter readings? Have you read your own meter every two weeks and compared it to your bill and what they say you are using, what are those numbers? Notice any discrepancies? Where are those extra pennies going to? We have had to call and get bills revised and corrected on an average of twice a year for both the gas and electric. The ones getting your payment every month bank on your not looking and not checking. If a few pennies from a million customers get kept back in that barrel in the back room, that adds up for them!

On the other hand, as consumers, homeowners may decide that twenty five bucks into a black hole to run one gas stove in a home is not worth all the risks no matter how nice they are or the service or anything else! It used to be a safety back up so we would not freeze in the winter if the electric goes down. No more, because it will be a wood, coal, or pellet corncob burning stove. Amish style and the sooner I can get solar laminates up on my south roof, with a good VAWT or two, an inverter and some batteries with a good generator, with some cisterns, and good old fashioned oil lamps, all the better to get off this silly stupid rich man's grid. If I have a computer at home, why should I go pay the Western Union cashier at my local market to simply use their computer for me and charge me two bucks to pay a bill I can pay online myself or just send a check for free? Stupid! Pretty soon they will do the total recall movie number; they will charge you for the air you breathe... and the water you drink? We already pay for the water.

      http://www.scorecard.org

Just what does that water you drink have in it and is it worth the fifty bucks a month you spend to use your tap or do a load or two of wash, flush a toilet? Well that is also another interesting story, but enough for now, to keep on topic. The good news is that other companies are doing fine in this area, Solyndra was only one of many.

How we live, what we use, what we buy, what we trash, and our habits do make a difference. Innovation has, must, and will always save our behinds. Of course, not every venture capital investment pans out, and as pointed out above, this one suffered from unfair Chinese government-subsidized competition.

NBC's Richard Haake blew this one terribly, failing to note that Romney's speech included FALSE CLAIMS against the Obama administration:

At that press conference, Romney went and lied (and later stuck with this lie) erroneously claiming that "an inspector general investigated and found that the Obama administration's friends and family inappropriately benefited from this". It's just not true. Romney could have blamed the "mistake" on his staff, but instead he continued defending the statement and incorporated it into his media ad produced that same day.

There are too many lies, false claims, distortions in America today.

Solyndra is banckrupt along with these other winners the Obama admin has chosen to give our tax dollas to. Quite a record if you ask me. Looks like a waste of another 10 billion or so and a recipe to turn a recession into a depression.

Blame someone else.....It has worked for him in the past... He can read another book on how great socialism is...and just keep going...Maybe Hugo will give him another book...

J.A.Bush was a businessman. The only thing he knew how to do was spend money on wars and keep it off the books.

As for Solyndra.I'm amazed that Romney and the GOP consider the failure of an American business in an emerging technology a victory. This was a business which could have competed with China, provided jobs and paid taxes.I thought that was the goal. There should be tears, not gloating and dancing on the corpse of American industry.

So tunanut, have you invented anything better? What are you saying here, that you think we should not put any effort into alternative energy supply? You sure do like fail. Is that part of your plan for your fellow American citizens? Is the GOP all doom and gloom now? Funny how they used to call the concerned scientists against nukes that and now we have nukey tuna! Way to go and so...a little ray of sunshine to clean out that infected depressive failure perspective of yours which has obviously made you quite blind to the full spectrum of reality. The symbol for failure for me is the republicans loss of honor. This single fact is the root of the circumstances we all find ourselves in. Nothing more, nothing less. Truly...the GOP would not know honor if it were staring them straight in the face. Completely obvious for years now. Flat unamerican and unforgivable. A stain on our flag that will show in future history books regardless the outcome of future elections.

President Obama won a clear majority in 2008 and clearly had a mandate from the people, the first president to do since 1992. When the Repugnican Traitors conspired on Inauguration night, it was really US they conspired against because we hired Obama to do a job which they have been hell-bent on preventing. As frustrated as I get with Mr. Obama, it's impossible to separate his lack of progress from the treasonous teapugnicans recalcitrance. They didn't simply conspire against him. They conspired against us. Most regrettably, he has done many things to appease these traitors. That was a serious error on his part. The only thing these roaches will understand is a boot stepping on them.

                Thomas Blue,

Obama did not win the popular vote though. Do you under stand Obama had the house and the Senate with majority's in both for the first two years he was in office. Obama himself said Bush spending as much as he did was un-American but Bush spent $4.5 trillion in 8 years; Obama has spent $5.2 trillion in 3 years and is asking for another $1.2 trillion for this year. There have been plenty of referendums on Obama just like the Dem's losing Kennedy's Senate seat? We cannot keep up this rate of spending if you actually knew how economics work and that The Fed Reserve is a private company and is not an American entity but make laws about banking for America and the world you would know we are going into dark times. You cannot give all people what they want and there needs to be someone in the White house that can make tough decisions and say this is not going to be popular but it needs to be done to help America get back on the right track.

We need to close our borders to all immigrants not just Mexico but everyone. Start taking care of Americans first not the world. We need to get rid of welfare with 35% of all Americans receive welfare as a working income or make them go to work doing menial labor that we will need some to do after we close all of our borders. You can not keep getting people to depend on the government and think that nothing is going to happen to America as a whole. 49.5% of Americans don't pay Fed income tax so 50.5% pay all the income tax. All of those that pay nothing are the ones saying that nobody else pays there fair share now that is a crock of sh*t if you don't pay taxes in these country and are not disabled, or retired, than you should not get a say as to what goes on in this country. WE have to many lazy welfare recipients (not all but most as i grew up in the ghetto and i know how they almost all of them game the system) not contributing but getting to decide policies that affect those of us that do pay taxes and it is not right. Maybe if people got of there as*ses and moved to where there is work America would be in a far better place.

But don't try and spin it as though Obama is the best president he sucks and could not make a hard decision if he had to. Oh, The intelligence about where Osama Bin Laden was, was gained under Bush not under Obama all Obama did was said shoot. Also Obama could of called our troops home like he said on the campaign trail but he didn't and the war expired under Bush's original withdrawal date but Obama tries and spins that also. You need some history in you life. Quit listing to the Lib Media and go out and read both said and then read the facts from those that have nothing to gain. Then come up with your own opinion because we can tell your opinion is that of the medias.

Bill1488: Obama did not win the popular vote though

Actual results from the 2008 General Election:
                Obama/Biden: 69,499,428 52.87% (pop vote) ----- 365, 67.8% (electoral)

                McCain/NumbNutz: 59,950,323 45.60% (pop vote) ----- 173, 32.2% (electoral)

OBAMA CLEARLY won the popular vote. And the electoral vote.
Since your first statement is an OUT AND OUT LIE (which never surprises me from dishonest right-wing cowards who can't debate without telling lies), then I'll go ahead and ignore the rest of your screed, since you cannot be trusted to be honest with simple facts that are easily researched.

BTW...do you homework. A clear majority of my fellow Americans wanted Barak Obama. We won. Black and white. Period. Without voter suppression or court fights. But as usual, an election doesn't mean much to the GOP unless they won it. It would be hard to say who the GOP holds in more contempt- dems or voters.

No doubt Obama won the popular vote in 2008, and after 2 years of his failed policies,(which were actually Pelosi and Reids failed policies because Obama let them run the show as he had no idea of what he was doing) the American people in the mid-terms shoved it so far up his A$$ it broke his nose. This is a failed administration and the sooner we come to terms with it and move on, the better. Obama came into office thinking he could talk anybody into anything, he found out he was wrong. And I know libs are going to say he saved GM, but the reality is that he only put off the inevitable for a few years, at taxpayer expense.

I had Solyndra quote me to solarize my shopping center, about 17,000 sq/ft. They came back with a quote of $660,000. The solar panels had a life expectancy of 25 years and would save me $1000 per month on my electric bill. A 25 yr life with a 60yr payoff and does anyone really wonder why they went bankrupt. I guess you really don't have to sell anything if the government is kicking you 550M to play with. It's clear to me that the company would never make it because it was a bad business model. The half billion loan from the Obama admin was clearly a payoff for a generous contribution to the Obama campaign to a company that had no chance. I suppose if you don't pay taxes, you're OK with that.

Another example of Obama's absolute incomptence and thinking that government should be able to pick the winners and losers in business.

The Chinese competition was well known before Obama shoveled hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars to a company whose CEO was a big Obama supporter and actually visited the White House more times than General Petreus. This whole thing is yet another Obama cluster hump that libs would have been screaming holy hell about if it was Bush in office.

Obama is as dirty as anything that ever slithered out of Chicago. Come November, he can crawl back under a rock in Grant Park. I'm sure Rahm and Oprah will have a nice one picked out for him.

The attack on Solyndra discounts our children's and grandchildren's future. The easy political smear on this company negates our lack of a viable solar industry. This should expose a do-nothing Congress that hasn't funded a successful solar industry or research to create the same.

Obama is a corrupt president. It's a simple fact. It doesn't matter that he's not Bush. etc. It doesn't matter that they're all to some degree corrupt. What matter is now...and suddenly you're gonna fall back on the "future" and the "children." Huh, what's next? Some silly notion like God or responsibility? Seems to be a lack of consistency in your liberal "logic."

Yes bush started the whole Solyndra thing but like most of Bush's bad policies Obama went ahead with it anyhow and against the advice of the Treasury Dept and several other agencies because he was helping out a campaign donor friend. Obama owns this failure and to say it is Bush's fault is totally ignorant. Obama knowingly screwed the taxpayers on this deal.

Solyndra should go down as an example, among other things, of what happens when you run a business with any other goal besides making a profit. Yes, I said profit, it is NOT a dirty word. They were selling a product to people for less than it cost them to make, and expecting the government to just keep sending the millions to keep them going "for the greater good." Well, it turns out eventually the well went dry, since their business had never generated one cent of profit they folded instantly, and all those jobs went away instantly. A business that operates at a PROFIT, will keep employees, and grow, and add more. And no working for a successful company does not mean you deserve an even share of the profits just for working there. A company that doesn't make money will always fail, whether they "want" to keep employees or not. A company that makes a profit will sometimes have to make hard choices and let people go in bad times, but a strong company will stay around and hire more people back, and keep going. Government intervening in simple business principles just results in taxpayer WASTE like this.

to buy into romneys thinking is moronic. romney has destroyed thousands of jobs, he is not then not now or never will be a job creator.

he dismantled companies in this country and sold them to communist china. he robbed pension plans which the tax payers had to reimberse.

jobs are not important to romney, social security is not important to romney, education is not important to romney, health care is not important to romney, racism is not important to romney, the economy is not important to romney, and we the people are not important to romney.

what is important to romney is tax cuts for the billionaires, more money in his pocket, and less money for everyone else. he doesnt need health insurance for hes self insured. he doesnt need social security, or to worry about the cost of medicine, or gasoline, or clothing, or transportation, he doesnt worry about housing, he has five houses, he knows nothing of these struggles, because he lives in a nonexisting world to 99% of us. 99% = 356,400,000 people out of 360,000,000 citizens.

he is an elitist and his job is to conquer and destroy, thats how he makes money. how can that be good for our country, for our people, for our parents, for our children?

Solyndra should go down as an example, among other things, of what happens when you run a business with any other goal besides making a profit.

And, FOR PROFT companies, like BANKS, are a HUGE example of what happens when the GOP controls the legislative & executive branches together.

You had a GOP Controlled White House from 2001 – 2009. And a GOP controlled Congress (BOTH houses) from 1995 – 2007. The collapse initially started in 2005 when the first wave of defaults began to show up; it picked up speed by 2006, and was in full swing by 2007 when huge banks like Countrywide and Washington Mutual began failing.

AND, try this scenario: Even if you could show this was due to Democratic controlled policy before 1995 (which you cannot) – then, with 12 years of full GOP legislative control after that in BOTH HOUSES, why the hell didn’t the GOP solve the problem before this happened? You people keep claiming the GOP is brilliant, with all the talent – then what the hell happened for the almost 12 years they controlled both houses and the Executive Branch? Didn’t they have the talent and smarts to FIX ANYTHING? Or, were they just hoping their false economy would make them look good long enough to ride it out?

The car drove soundly into the wall. GOP Pres Bush was in the driver’s seat for all that time, as was the GOP Congress. How long you gonna try to blame this crash on someone else? When do the right-wing American cowards grow their cajones enough to man-up and own their crap?

                Frogmorton,

                ...

I want to say this one more time, and I want to thank again all the people here
from the private sector who have worked with Secretary Cisneros on this: Our
home ownership strategy will not cost the taxpayers one extra cent. It will not
require legislation. It will not add more Federal programs or grow Federal
                bureaucracy.
                ...

What we are doing today will allow more homes to be blessed by more families.
I hope it will start all these young people on a path that will take them to
great joys in their personal lives, and perhaps to other homes, but something
they will always know that their country wanted them to have because they were
entitled to it as a part of the American dream.

Bill Clinton from "Remarks on the National Homeownership Strategy," June 5th 1995.

I refuse to agree with anyone who thinks they can blame this recession on any one man, party, system, or incident, because their is plenty of blame to go around.

We are in a recession because in the 90's and early 2000's, a huge number of people decided they were tired of waiting for the American Dream, so they took out reverse mortgages on existing property, new mortgages, consumer loans, business loans, every credit card they could qualify for, and they BORROWED everything they ever wanted. Suddenly everyone had three new luxury cars on lease in the driveway, used high interest CC's to buy flat screen TV's, stainless appliances, new furniture, and on and on. As long as they figured out the payments they needed to make based on their income, they would borrow and borrow and borrow with no regards to whether they would ever actually be able to make headway in ever paying down that debt, and thinking about how quickly they would no be able to make payments if their work situtation changes.

The government meanwhile, as seen above, decided that every American had the right to own a home, and guarenteed loans through Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and required banks to give mortages out to people that never would have qualified under traditional requirements. But hey, homes are a solid appreciating asset, so that wouldn't be risky right? With the easy availability of these loans, and people foaming at the mouth to buy houses with payments they could barely afford to start, and ARM rates in the future that would become completely unpayable, it created a huge artificial demand. Now I am not absolving the banks of guilt, for their part they were more than happy to be lending all this money and making the interest, and they had the government's promise the loans would be backed on default anyway; it seemed like a win-win. This demand skyrocketed the price of homes far beyond traditional growth, creating an investment market. Whole new subdivisions were being built, and signs hung before the ground was even broken "Sold out, check with _____— for availability in our next project." Except all they had was deposits from investors who never intended to own or live in these homes, but rather expected by the time the houses were built the market would have risen netting them a healthy profit.

All it took was a few people to stop making their payments, and the first domino had fallen, the bubble was burst, and the whole system came tumbling down. Suddenly all these high risk loans were defaulting as people lost jobs, couldn't make payments at adjusted interest rates, the investors who were buying homes and new projects out on speculation instantly tried to cut their losses on what they owned, slashing prices, and walking away from deposits on unbuilt projects, leaving whole ghost towns of unoccupied brand new homes. The shortcuts taken by contractors in these projects such as the Chinese drywall fiasco didn't help things either. All this just furthered the lowering of value of homes to where they actually were undervalued. More and more people got underwater on their mortgages, owing more on their homes than they were worth. Even those that had jobs and could make payments, instead of honoring the contracts that they signed under no duress, handed the banks the keys and said "good luck."

The government was in an impossible place, they had a fairly large part in creating this idea that everyone should be allowed to buy a home, and had told the banks the loans were guarenteed, and that came back to bite them. I hate the idea of the bailouts as much as anyone, and completely disagree with the auto bailouts (Ford didn't take them and came out the strongest, while GM and Crysler and stil saddled with the same union pension nonsense that got them into their mess in the first place. GM would be a stronger company today if it had undergone a true bankruptcy), but the Government had blood on their hands here as well, and couldn't just wash it off and let the financial system collapse.

While this period of artificial wealth was going on, everyone was happy because they got exactly what they wanted, and blinded themselves to the frieght train tracks they were occupying. The American public was living the high life, all on debt, the banks had more business then they could dream of, and were all happy to be making big paydays, from the top management to the loan writers. The government was so proud they had helped millions of American's buy homes that wouldn't, and as it turns out shouldn't, have. Everyone was happy, but they were literally living on borrowed time, and that time ran out while GWB was in office.

To just dismiss everything I said, and say "But it was Bush's fault," is willful ignorance at best, and malicious delusion at worst. Bush didn't make anyone buy a TV on a credit card, reverse mortgage their house to take a world cruise, make someone working minimum wage take out a ARM, make anyone take out a lease on two brand new BMW's who should have kept driving the 3 year old sedan they owned outright, he didn't tell the banks or credit card companies to give that debt out either. I am not claiming he was a perfect president, nor does he, but the sheer amount of blame people put on his shoulders for things he had no control over is rediculous.

If anything your point reinforces mine, ANY TIME the government decides businesses should be doing anything but trying to make money, everything gets screwed up. If banks had gone on only giving out mortgages to people who were qualified by traditional means, maybe this whole mess wouldn't have been so bad.

Baloney. You clearly have no idea what brought us to this mess... honestly, we are doomed to repeat all the same tragic errors, if people continue to tow the GOP party line and repeat this mindless, moronic rhetoric. The right-wing is great at repeating talking points from Faux Noise, but little more... It shows how quickly people are ready to repeat the same mistakes, just to see their moron "leadership" back in power to drive their ridiculous social agendas and bash on gays and women...

Banking and housing both started their decline when the Bush Admin virtually eliminated the Federal Agencies dedicated to regulation and investigating predatory lending practices at the Federal Level. I know – my partnership owned a large regional mortgage company up until 2003. When Bush’s own stimulus policies weren’t working and he was burning through the surplus handed down to him, he cut all those federal agencies way back – one example (of many) is the RESPA division which, in early 2002, he cut down to TWO PEOPLE for a total of 50 states – and, when he did that, his administration actually sent an official mailer out to every bank and mortgage company in the US. (I know, because we received one of them). And, magically, every major mortgage bank in the US who had questionable ethics and unquestionable greed, started up all the “really cool” predatory lending practices, especially toward subprime customers, to make a quick buck (and, lots of them).

Countrywide, Dime, First Franklin, MILA, and a whole list of others started the ridiculous 1.5% loans, and the $125% LTV loans. They were mostly 3-, 4- and 5-year loans with massive balloons. These kinds of loans are the biggest reasons why the housing market began to crash, and thus, banks began to crash. Once we saw the big guys doing this in 2002/03, we put our mortgage company up for sale and sold it within 6 months of listing it. Had we held on much longer, it would have been worthless.

Bush and the GOP knew his economic policies weren’t working, so he built a false economy based upon the largest increase in signature debt, HELOC debt and refinance debt ever seen in any presidential term. And when these short term 1.5% loans and 125% LTV loans came due 3-5 years later, many ballooned and fell
into default. More like avalanched into default. This all started LONG before Obama’s election. And it is directly related to Bush’s policy, fully back by the GOP Congress – which was specifically written to encourage banks to build up a false economy based on spending that was derived from more debt, NOT more jobs. For a period, more jobs followed of course, due to more spending. But it was all spending of borrowed money (mostly signature debt and refinance debt -- by the way, we saw the greatest percentage increase in new issuance of signature/credit card debt during the Bush Administration over any other president in history, by a factor of .5, or 50%!!). Of course, the secondary market failed, and then, who was the first major bank to finally drop? Countrywide – the first major lender to offer these crazy loans after Bush wiped out every federal agency dedicated to regulation and to investigating predatory lending practices. Others followed. the huge IndyMac Bank collapsed in 2008. Washington Mutual, the largest S&L in the US, also failed in 2008. The list goes on! Right-wing cowards want to blame these colossal disasters on Obama? Really??

None of this happens overnight. This took a few years and it didn’t happen a few weeks after Obama was elected, like some morons would like you to think. We saw it coming a mile away in 2002, and took action to get out before it got bad. So did many other smaller mortgage companies who also sold off at that time.

Seriously, the right-wing can “blame the DEMs” all they like. It’s simply ridiculous.

Goodness sakes man, I never said I blamed any of it on Obama?

I just don't see how you can deny the Democrats had any fault, and blame the republicans.

What Democrats have and had to say about Freddie and Fannie:

“I want to begin by saying that I am glad to consider the legislation, but I do not think we are facing any kind of a crisis. That is, in my view, the two government sponsored enterprises we are talking about here, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, are not in a crisis. We have recently had an accounting problem with Freddie Mac that has led to people being dismissed, as appears to be appropriate. I do not think at this point there is a problem with a threat to the Treasury.”

                Barney Frank, Democrat, 9/10/2003

”I don’t see much other than a shell game going on here, moving something from one agency to another and in the process weakening the bargaining power of poorer families and their ability to get affordable housing,”

                Melvin Watt, Democrat, NC

“I think the responsibility that the Democrats have may rest more in resisting any efforts by Republicans in the Congress, or by me when I was President, to put some standards and tighten up a little on Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.”

                Bill Clinton 10/31/2008

“Like a lot of my Democratic colleagues I was too slow to appreciate the recklessness of Fannie and Freddie. I defended their efforts to encourage affordable homeownership when in retrospect I should have heeded the concerns raised by their regulator in 2004. Frankly, I wish my Democratic colleagues would admit when it comes to Fannie and Freddie, we were wrong."

                Artur Davis, Democrat

                And the Republicans:

The Bush administration today recommended the most significant regulatory overhaul in the housing finance industry since the savings and loan crisis a decade ago.

Under the plan, disclosed at a Congressional hearing today, a new agency would be created within the Treasury Department to assume supervision of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the government-sponsored companies that are the two largest players in the mortgage lending industry.

The new agency would have the authority, which now rests with Congress, to set one of the two capital-reserve requirements for the companies. It would exercise authority over any new lines of business. And it would determine whether the two are adequately managing the risks of their ballooning portfolios.

                NYT 2003: http://www.nytimes.com/2003/09/11/business/new-agency-proposed-to-oversee-freddie-mac-and-fannie-mae.html

For years I have been concerned about the regulatory structure that governs Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac–known as Government-sponsored entities or GSEs–and the sheer magnitude of these companies and the role they play in the housing market. OFHEO’s report this week does nothing to ease these concerns. In fact, the report does quite the contrary. OFHEO’s report solidifies my view that the GSEs need to be reformed without delay.

I join as a cosponsor of the Federal Housing Enterprise Regulatory Reform Act of 2005, S. 190, to underscore my support for quick passage of GSE regulatory reform legislation. If Congress does not act, American taxpayers will continue to be exposed to the enormous risk that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac pose to the housing market, the overall financial system, and the economy as a whole.

                John McCain 5/25/2006

And I still don't see how any of this at all attempts to nullify my point that government should stay out of the way of telling businesses how to do business.

And you can list quotes all day long. I was in the industry when it began to fail, our partnership had a considerable regional mortgage company and we saw this coming a mile away. We could look down from the smoke, see the fire, and see who lit it. I really don't care how many people you quote -- I know the forces behind this mess, I know exactly how and why the secondary market failed in the manner it did leading to the housing and banking collapse, and what led up to it.

Try a different point of view: Why didn't the Dems solve the problem they created? Try to think more independently, you are on the wrong side on this one.

cal-nutz: so you admit that Clinton signed the act.

Cal -- let me help you with something:

The Community Reinvestment Act (CRA, Pub.L. 95-128, title VIII of the Housing and Community Development Act of 1977, 91 Stat. 1147, 12 U.S.C. § 2901 et seq.) is a United States federal law designed to encourage commercial banks and savings associations to help meet the needs of borrowers in all segments of their communities, including low- and moderate-income neighborhoods. Congress passed the Act in 1977 to reduce discriminatory credit practices against low-income neighborhoods, a practice known as redlining.

Jimmy Carter was president in 1977, punkin!

And you have never proven that the CRA caused the Bush Recession...in complete ignorance, you suggested it did, but you also failed to show that. And, in fact, you have no personal or educated knowledge which could tell you that -- because it's a wrong conclusion. That wasn't the trigger. OOPS!

Maybe you want to suggest that Harry Truman signed it? That sounds like a good story, too!

Obama loves bringing up Romney's history with Bain, and I feel its about time Romney has hit back. When Romney was running Bain, he was not in the business of creating jobs, he was in the business of running Bain, and making as much money for them as possible. Obama as president of a country with High unemployment, has the duty to help create jobs. Weather this company failed on its own, or because of China's patent stealing, really doesn't matter. The fact that he has not been able to create enough jobs, is a real failure. He has enough time to meet with Black pastors in this country to talk about Gay marriages, but not enough time to constantly invite the top business leaders in this country to the white house to talk about job creation. He actively works to promote his own agenda, not the agenda of what Americans need. I say he invites the 10 Top business leaders to the White house every day, for thirty days. Thats 300 people who would be able to give him ideas to spur the economy. Not invite people to discuss Gay Marriage!!

Sorry but once again a right winger is wrong. It was Romney who mentioned Bain not Obama or the democrats. Romney decided that since his record as governor of Massachusetts (born in Boston) was abysmal he would give Bain as part of his resume, bad idea. Another misconception you make is that the president should concentrate on creating jobs, government does not create jobs, President Obama has all but wiped out the large government hiring that occurred under George Bush and shrunk the government payroll. President Obama has invited many business man/ women to the White House, if you did a little research instead of relying on FOX news to give you your opinion you'd know this. Why exactly is it that a president should not be speaking about equal rights for gay people? He is the president of ALL Americans he should be out front setting an example of inclusions unlike right wingers who advocate genocide and murder for our gay citizens, how nice, in America sounds more like the Taliban or Al-Queda who we just fought a 10 year war with. Taxes are at the lowest rate in 40 years, President Obama has lowered small business tax rates by half. Exactly what has the congress done? Except for holding the nation hostage and doing absolutely nothing since taking the house? They have concentrated on taking rights away from people shoving their religious beliefs on the rest of the nation, they have done nothing to help the economy in fact they are trying as hard as they can to destroy what they didn't finish in the last presidents term. Maybe this is why congress's approval ratings are what 11% approval? ABYSMAL!!!! Please provide a list of what congress has done to fix/help the country?

Actually, considering Obama was the one who dragged the red herring of gay marriage across the campaign trail. Can't blame him though. What else can he run on? The economy? Trayvon?

TRUTH??? What the hell does a right winger know about truth? First of all here is Mitt making claims such as this when he had MANY companies in Massachusetts that he gave tax payer money to who were BIG campaign supporters and donors once the money got to those companies they failed and went out of business. Second Mitt makes a claim that it was looked into and discovered that the money from the stimulus was funneled to family and friends of the president which is an out and out LIE no one ever found any improprieties in the funding. So, to sum up, Mitt and the right wing are the failures from George W. Bush to this congress who have stood in the way of any meaningful recovery. President Obama has done a great job for America and he will continue to do so in his next term. You anti-American Taliban type should simply shut the hell up and face your lies and live up to them. The American Taliban Party cannot run on it's record since it is abysmal and almost ruined the country as a whole, the debt we now face is because of them, President Obama has held government spending low, lower than any other in 60 years. Now that's a fact, but it doesn't matter to right wingers they aren't interested in making sure all Americans do well only their rich friends. You guys posting on here I'd love to know if you're wealthy or just fools for following such morons? Tell ya what, stop watching FOX news and do a little research for yourself if you really care about America and it's people, ALL OF ITS PEOPLE!! Tax weary1 please give a factual list of failures I'd love to know what you call failure.

I think Mitt should stand on his own record, for what he has done for the people of Massachusetts as governor. Having left the state myself, under his tenure, due to all those jobs he never created, 'Nuff said.

And yeah, I've been working every day since then. So, when Massachusetts goes Obama in '12, you can say what you want, but those of us who have experienced him and his "contributions" know why.

Romney had a similar program while Governor of Massachusetts to invest money into alternative energy companies. Lots of states have programs like this. He had two of them go bust and both were run by people who were campaign contributors. Romney's claim that the Solyndra money went to 'friends and family' is more BS. He basically described what he did as governor and attributed it to the President's administration.

States do not have their own money, doh doh. It is all based on taxpayer money, other than the very rare self-sustaining, near break even project, which is still funded under a budget based on Tax Income. How do you even come up w/ such drivel?

Ever drive on the federal interstate? Or fly through one state into another? Or hear about the Federally Funded Army? Or have a Federal Agency enforce an Act which makes sure you can drink your tap water?

When there is a Federal subsidy given, is that an investment?

96ws6: Provide a reputable source to support this post. You are beyond the pale. What is it with your President's college transcripts? You don't believe that a black man can achieve at Harvard Law what your President achieved? Let me give you a hint about what is REQUIRED to get into Harvard Law, since I have a daughter that competes at that level: You need a stellar undergrad resume, not just grades but achievement outside of school, a 170+ on the LSAT, 180 being a perfect score, and grades in the 3.8 + category. You have those grades 96ws6? If so, apply and see if you can get in. Even with those credentials, Harvard Law accepts less than 10% of applicants. It is the the BEST of the BEST to get in. You won't make it.

Harvard has said that your President graduated Magna Cum Laude. For the ignorant, like YOU that means with honors. The fact that President Obama was the Editor of the Review tells you all you need to know, an honor, by the way, not given to Romney.

                                Now, Grow up.

The Washington Times, 96ws6? Really, the Unification Church Washington Times?

NO ONE takes that rag seriously, nor would I accept it in a college freshman paper as a source.

Since I am pretty convinced you did not attend University, let me try to make this as simple for you as I can.

Harvard Law Magna Cum Laude tells you your President's grades.

That he was accepted at Harvard Law tells you his undergrad grades and LSAT.

That he was Law Review Editor tells you his rank and status.

SO you ask for a source then poo poo it. According to your information his Columbia U transcripts should be very impressive, why not release them? Btw I did graduate from a University. No need to get testy, Don't you know that once you resort to insults you have lost the intellectual argument?

Columbia is Ivy: same measures apply. They accept about 11% undergrad.

The Washington Times is not an acceptable source, it is as agenda driven as Fox News is. I am serious when I say I would not accept that in a college freshmen paper.

IF you attended University, and I suspect that you may be exaggerating, it would not have been at a highly competitive one. Why do I know this? You have no knowledge about what is required to be accepted.

You know all you need to know about your President. Your problem is that a black man should not have entre to places that would refuse you.

How do I know you are a racist? You and the other nutcases running around demanding the President's transcripts have NEVER done this prior to this President.

There is an element of common sense missing in your posts that cause me to laugh. I have made this as simple for you as I can, and you are unable, due to some irrational hatred for your President to take in the information I have given you: to wit:

To get into the Ivy League schools, you must be in the top 2% of the nation. They do not have to accept anyone with less than that. Too many want to get in.

To get into Harvard Law, your credentials must be the best of the best. They accept less than 10%, and probably get about 14-15000 applications per year.

To be Editor of Law Review, you have to be at the top of the class.

To graduate Magna Cum Laude, you must have grades at the 3.7 level. It is only awarded for a numerical value.

Now. Do try to get off this irrational bent of yours, and realize that a black man can have the requisite requirements to achieve Harvard Law, and concentrate instead on bettering yourself.

Since democrats insisted that President Bush release his college transcripts during the 2000 election, I am assuming by your logic that you and your liberal bretheren acknowledge that you all are "racists" and "nutcases"

There was ZERO demand that Bush release his transcripts. Bush's problem was that he attended college prior to FERPA laws and they got out. I think it was Newsweek did an article on how he would not make it into Ivy today based on his grades and SAT scores, even as legacy admit. Kerry's were leaked too.

What we wanted to see was his National Guard records, which were fair game.

Don't try to make an equivalency argument where none exists. It makes you look ridiculous.

And riddle me this: Where in the Constitution would I find a requirement for Presidential candidates to release grade transcripts. Hmmmm?

That is not true. The media badgered George W. Bush into releasing his transcripts which showed what he had already told them...that he was a C student. There is not any law that says the president HAS to release his transcripts but I think both Romney (who by the way also has not released his) and Obama should release them. Like I said, if they want the most important job in the world, they should be willing to show the same information you are expected to show when applying for a job. By the way, you should really think a little more before you start insinuating someone is racist.

Yes, of course Bush released his transcripts. Let's see, that would be around the time that he released his National Guard records and his DUI records, correct?

What is confusing the two of you (which I imagine is quite easy to do) is that feckless George was pretty proud of being an incompetent student and bragged about his less than stellar record.

Nope. It was leaked. So was Kerry's. www.insidepolitics.org/heard/heard32300.html.

I will use the term "racist" when I decide it applies. If you don't like the term, don't engage in the behavior.

Maybe it would be wise for the two of you to sit down and do a real self inventory about why you want to spread rumors about your President.

I just mentioned on another seed that calling someone a liar(or in this case racist) is fair game if it is true. Saying you are not a thief while repeatedly in the process of a burglary does little to get the thief off the hook, despite his/her protestrations.

Especially when he keeps returning to crime.

It is in his/her blood. Like lying. Or the repeated use of false logic to justify/rationalize unwarranted arguments.

Just like the hate these racists have for Obama.

Exactly, notsojingle. I can't think of a time a President has been challenged to prove he is a citizen or that he deserved to be in the University that he was in.

There can only be one reason.

Honestly? I didn't care about Bush's transcript, nor have I thought about it in regard to any other President. You are a different person when you are a young 20 than you are as an adult.

Great to see you again, Friend!

It has become apparent that many with no possible/plausable connection with the Republican Politicians' Bottom Line(If You Are Rich, We Got Your Back) Mentality are somehow drawn to feel some alegance towards the very Party consistently tearing down the foundations for Middle Class to ever reach the most common and regular goals toward which We have strived for with Our Labours.

The Selling Out Club (Romney qualifies for President of THAT!) has flipped so much of the Trade Balance and GDP away for achieving a larger Corporate Profit, more Million$ for the Suits, that it is beyond peculiar that those very folks affected through job loss and diminishing Buying Power by the attack on the Economy through illegal Invasions and Occupations, Improper Energy & Banking Oversights(not discounting the so many other factors, domestically & internationally including many things the Dems do themselves, or don't do to not stop or correct their conterparts in crime, ie) yet do not even realize it. In discussions with several I know, they often just appear the detached from reality, obfuscating and annoyingly consistent at saying the most stupid things without the ability to hear themselves, full of misplaced hate and blame, usually blathering with no instigation to upset an otherwise calm and reasoned situation. And racism is something they ARE very good at disguising, but ultimately will slip their true natures out in the tangled web of lies they live.

It is one thing to espouse a principle in debate, another to claim a lie as a truth.

It is NOT just the Republicans that do it, just most damagingly and frequently.

The Bush/Cheney debacle caused the lives of over 4000 Americans and probably a million Iraqis.

Cheney is obviously embarrassed by his own record...was a no-show at the unveiling yesterday at the WH.

Not even close on the moral equivalency scale.

The truth is that the Solyndra business plan didn't account for the Chinese dumping cheap solar panels on the world markets. And, of course, we all know that none of Willard's Bain ventures ever failed.....RIGHT?

The cheaper Chinese panels were available before the Solyndra loan. This is just one of the reasons why the Treasury advised against the loan.

How would a leveraged buy out have saved Solyndra? Mitt could have sold off some equipment or patents? We know he would have charged millions in fees and raided any available funds. Look at his real record at Bain. He should have worn an eye patch and had a parrot on his shoulder.

Solyndra's other financing came from several equity firms. Mitt is now attacking venture capitalism. Ironic and creepy.

One of these days you are going to SURPRISE me and everyone else and RESEARCH, instead of paste and post. The Bush administration REJECTED Solyndras application. Obama because it seemed to ADVANCE his "green jobs" agenda gave the "green" light to the DOE to give Solyndra the $535 million, and the rest(including taxpayers money) is HISTORY.

Wrong, Mruseurhead, and perhaps you ought to use yours.

Bush advanced 16 projects, including Solyndra, out of 143 submissions. Source: Media Matters; "What the Press is Getting Wrong about Solydra"; 9/19/2011.

Do read the article, you might learn that Romney is lying AGAIN! By the way, why is it that Romney lies, and those of you who detest your President, for no better reason than his party affiliation or ethnicity, slobber it out without checking and verifying?

Quit blaming Feisty for being right and try to do some research yourself.

Shellback: what is it with you Bushophiles: facts are facts. Quit behaving like that Presidency did not have a tremendously negative impact on America.

It was started under Bush but Executed by Obama and after plenty of advice against it. So you are letting Obama off the hook because he merely continued bad ideas and policies put forth by Bush who you call incompetent? Yet when Obama furthers this incompetence you are A-OK with it? You are a total hypocrite.

                                    Bo,

                                    from YOUR LINK:

Bush Administration tries to take Solyndra before a DOE credit review committee before President Obama is inaugurated.
                                    1 Jan 2009

In an effort to show it has done something to support renewable energy, the Bush Administration tries to take Solyndra before a DOE credit review committee before President Obama is inaugurated. The committee, consisting of career civil servants with financial expertise, remands the loan back to DOE “without prejudice” because it wasn’t ready for conditional commitment.

Looks like they TRIED to get it through before Obama got in office but it was shot down until it was passed by THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION.

Not a "brain dead dem".....really? Anti trust....really? Your half truths may fly with "Fiesty" about this being "Bush's baby" but the TRUTH is the Bush administration rejected Solyndra, And anti-trust it was neither Bush's fault or China's that Solyndra failed........"green energy" failed. The reason new technology replaces the old is because either it works or it is necessary. We already have enough viable energy on the market right now. It is cheap and available and already on the grid, the only problem with it is the "environmental wackoos" who DEMONIZE it. Government cannot force CHANGE, the market controls that. And TAXPAYERS should not be FORCED to bank roll FAILURE. Over here on the "left coast" where I live, most of our electricity comes from "hydro dams", the simple harnessing of water(which we have an abundance of) turning turbines to generate power. But "environmentalist" claim that "wind" not water(tell me what is more "natural" than water?) is a RENEWABLE resource, and so they put hundreds of wind turbines up in the gorge to "supplement". Here is the problem, and here is how our "mental giants" in our liberal Government SOLVES it. We have had plenty of water behind the dams to provide the electricity we need, BUT........the grid cannot handle both hydro and wind, the grid cannot handle the "over abundance" of power. SOLUTION; they shut down the wind turbines, but because this means the company that contracts to sell wind power is now "off line" and is losing money, taxpayers and utility customers are FORCED to reimburse the wind company for their LOSS. Again just like all great ideas from the left it is US that pays for THEIR GOOD INTENTIONS.

"Green energy" is in it's infancy and has not failed. The fact that the grid cannot handle this production highlights the need to invest in our infrastructure and the future of energy solution. This is a failure of both parties and their silly pandering and catering to lobbyists and oil companies.

We need "green energy" to succeed and should encourage the oil companies to control it's growth. They have the money, experience and most important-the political clout. Money talks and the politician walks.

This is not a industry to fight over but an industry to encourage and grow. It is only a part of the energy puzzle but it is not a part we want to pay China or Germany to make.

Conservaterds and their two brain cells, one for breathing and one for standing

As governor of Massachusetts, Romney handed out loans to firms in emerging technology fields, some of them ended up (like Solyndra) going bankrupt. The governor's office noted that those expenditures were part of a stimulus bill he initially opposed but reluctantly supported.

Another reason why the Solyndra hit may prove tricky to execute is that, despite the conventional wisdom, it wasn't simply an Obama administration-backed project. Though the current White House accelerated the loan guarantee -- even as evidence emerged that it could go bad -- the roots of the loan actually emerged during the Bush administration. And the process was facilitated, in part, by a cadre of industry lobbyists of different ideological stripes.

With China owning 26% of all our foreign debt, its no surprise that Solyndra would go under to cheap Chinese imports. Obama has to favor China in order to keep his sugar daddy happy. Even if it means American jobs, lost investments and tax dollars. Its what happens when you're indebted and rely on a foreign nations for your out of control spending.

China owns 8% of our debt. We as taxpayers own the largest percentage through SS fund buying bonds.

In 20 years when we're all powering our homes with solar panels made in Japan, I'll bet some of these same Romney supporters will be wondering whatever happened to American ingenuity and know-how.

The government has given seed money to new industries until they get up to competitive speed for a long time. Take a look at the civil aviation industry some time, for instance. But hey, if Romney is really against the government picking winners and losers, could we see him come out against ethanol, agriculture, and other subsidies? I didn't think so.

Bush was stupid enough to start it but Obama was stupid enough to follow through with it, and after lots of advice not to. Give credit where credit is due. Hypocrite! Continuing this project was more incompetent than starting funding for it because by the time Obama got a hold of it there was all kinds of advice to scrap the project which the president ignored in an effort to do favors for campaign donor.

Poor Newday, its just so hard for you to admit that your Dear Leader is nothing but a cluster F looking for some place to happen. Obama approved it, he didnt have to, its on him, or is this another of the libs "blame Bush" excuses.

I read just fine, can you say the same? Seems like Obama has some explaining to do. September 2009, wasnt your boy Obama President at that time, or maybe youd like to use the ever popular "its Bushs fault" excuse.

Coulda stopped there! And Obama has been ordered to follow many of the paths W already was ordered to. None of these guys actually dream up any of these projects nor funding, they just sign the checks and make the factory visits.

Romney is the one who says he can turn around our economy, guess he would tear American Apart like he did other countries, then sell us to higher bidder. Romney need to learn to be a person first, the an AMERICAN, he is the worst kind of person anyone could ask for. I am going to vote and it will not be for this loser. The Repubs could not find anyone in their entire party that was better than this, guess not. This man is not for a person that works a 40 hour week. good for nothing, he is a liar and thief. guess that is why he stays in government.

So, the "business" candidate doesn't understand some businesses can fail. I think the biggest failure is in the foreground.

its not that the business failed, it was investigated for years and found not viable, then secret bundlers were handed cash to keep a failing business alive for short term. then gave bonuses to the execs after bankruptcy. obama is a turd. a crooked, lying, communist that we have all had enough of.

Again, Right you are wrong. Here are some facts. Not name calling and a smear campaign.

Let us be clear about the good free enterprises here. There are many that have done well, many that do are ethical and provide a product or a service needed by many. Everyone is happy. Prosperous. We need more of the honest and beneficial businesses here in our towns and cities. We like success. However, many businesses, factories, and Main Street stores have been destroyed in the USA by run away shops and the resulting restrictions on trade that make for a one sided gain and drain away American moneys to internationals and private profits for a few, moneys that do not trickle back in trade to the 99% of us. Nor do we get equally efficient or excellent quality products like we used to have, extra costs are involved in shipping things that we could better make here and use at home...there is a whole big bunch of businesses and problems and solutions here. Things do need to be changed, and some of the policies of the last twenty years have not worked out very well. When a trial or experiment does not work well, it needs to be changed back to what had worked out better. We need to stay open minded enough to admit it and go with what works best.

As for this case, Solyndra, we can spell it out again. Its rather simple. Have you noticed the quality of those nice terry cloth bath towels you got last month at the big mart? Falling apart? Uh oh, guess its not real cotton. More like paper? One of our trade partners where enterprising manufacturers flocked to is CHINA. One of so many things, laminated solar strips and panels, were made more inexpensively there. The USA could not compete because of our laws here for minimal quality and wages, so they could not under price the labor or make their products with shoddy materials that would not pass USA inspection.

However, do not be so sure that solar enterprises like Solyndra are completely gone. It may very well be too early for that as it is such a new innovative field and developments are ongoing. The cylindrical model may disappear or come back in the future in another form or more streamlined and efficient package. There have been recent discoveries with VAWTS in wind power, Vertical Axial Wind Turbines covered with mesh or screens solves the bird problems and more can be gained from the wind in less space too. There has not been a real push to convert over to new tech heating and energy use in the vast number of private buildings and homes here in the USA because of the gatekeepers at the top of the current energy and utility provider enterprises.

No one wants to lose their place, power, wealth, or their business, but I will tell you gung ho righties, theoretically, it is ironic that for all your claims about caring about your fellow man and centralized this or that...the guys at the top of these archaic and damaging businesses are very centralized indeed and not in a good way. In this biz we are decentralized, serving private residences and homeowners, and also commercial buildings. It is not all that way or this way here, there are Republican leaders now driving electric vehicles and very proud of it. No problem. No need for the hate and extremisms. For all of us at the end of the day it is coming down to what actually works.

Here is a link explaining some details and reasons, who's who's, and facts. Please take a moment to read this. These claims against Obama are so outside of the real players and people in charge of this company. Name calling does not explain the topic, offer solutions, or influence anyone...nor does it make YOU look like any kind of an expert on your attempted mean-hearted, immature, name-calling and ego centered explanation at what? Loose words, false claims, accusations and labels backed up by nothing. One thing we all can see that you are very good at is persecution. Who taught you so well. Your parents? Yes, it appears from your own words, you've got some personal projected "issues".

From what we are reading in current events about dangerous pollution, many today are more concerned about the future of our planet and our resources, and we want to get our clean energy alternatives in order to save money, have a better future, manage our work, make our livings, keep healthy and happy, care for our children, avoid murderous wars and achieve the peace to continue to survive into the future. Finding real solutions: That is what is important here.
