Bushes return to White House for portrait unveiling

President Barack Obama welcomed former President George W. Bush and former First Lady Laura Bush to the White House for the traditional tribute to the president's predecessor.

Former President George W. Bush and former first lady Laura Bush were back at the White House on Thursday for the unveiling of their official portraits.

President Obama and first lady Michelle Obama welcomed their predecessors to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue for an event devoid of partisanship, setting aside the political differences between the two administrations.

“Mr. President, thank you for your warm hospitality. Madam First Lady, thank you so much for inviting our rowdy friends to my hanging," Bush said to laughter before an audience that included his two daughters, a number of former aides and his mother and father, former President George H.W. Bush and former first lady Barbara Bush.

Bush's laugh line was just one of many lighter moments in a ceremony that might have otherwise had the potential for awkwardness, given the frequency with which Obama often says his successor's policies are to blame for the nation's current woes.

Obama didn't shy away from addressing one of the biggest shared issue of their presidencies: the economic crisis that took hold in 2008.

“Over those two and a half months, in the midst of that crisis, President Bush, his Cabinet, his staff, many of you who are here today went out of your ways -- George, you went out of your way, to make sure that the transition to a new administration was as seamless as possible,” Obama said.

President Barack Obama gestures toward former President George W. Bush, former first lady Laura Bush and first lady Michelle Obama, in the East Room of the White House in Washington, Thursday, May 31, 2012, during a ceremony where the Bush's portraits were unveiled.

And Obama gave Bush his due for their shared role in hunting down Osama bin Laden:

“That's why my first call, once American forces were safely out of harm's way, was to President Bush because protecting our country is neither the work of one person nor the task of one period of time. It's an ongoing obligation that we all share.”

Any of the weightier matters were dispelled, though, by Bush's laugh-out-loud performance. He started off saying how pleased he was that the White House portrait collection now begins and ends with a "George W." (or George Washington).

“When the British burned the White House ... in 1814, Dolly Madison famously saved this portrait of the first George W. Now Michelle, if anything happens, there's your man,” Bush joked. (During her speech, First Lady Michelle Obama promised she’d go straight for his portrait.)

And former President Bush didn’t spare the current president: “I am also pleased, Mr. President, that when you are wandering these halls as you wrestle with tough decisions, you will now be able to gaze at this portrait and ask: What would George do?"

The event was somewhat of a family affair; at least 14 members of the Bush clan were on hand for the official unveiling of the portraits, which were done by artist John Howard Sanden.

Noting everyone assembled, Bush joked upon introducing Laura: “It is my privilege to introduce the greatest first lady ever. Sorry, Mom. Would you agree to a tie?”

Laura Bush didn’t miss a beat, either.

"It was really gracious of you to invite us back to the White House to hang a few family pictures. And I'm sure you know nothing makes a house a home like having portraits of its former occupants staring down at you from the wall,” the former first lady said.

Bush’s portrait, which was completed in 2011, depicted him standing in the Oval Office; Laura Bush’s portrait has her in the Green Room. The former first lady’s portrait was finished early this year. Bush 43’s portrait will hang down a hall from his father’s portrait in the White House, a point that made for a poignant moment.  “I am honored to be hanging near a man who gave me the greatest gift possible: unconditional love. And that would be number 41,” he said, to sustained applause.

Spanky - Mitt had to sneak in to speak at Solyndra - no great feat there. And, how embarrassing to have to slither in to make a speech.

How embarrassing for the GOP to have a candidate like Mitt Romney. But then, the GOP really has no one of any integrity or spine to run. Mitt's the best ya got. Truly a sad day for what was a great party.

Uh, no Seeking - the embarrassing part is Solyndra.

THat fact that you can't see that is a tad embarrassing for you. B Ut don't worry, it is in no way surprising, but rather the Liberal Cocoon effect.

By the way, if you have not seen the footage from AXE's speech today you really ought to.

Like the crowd was chanting - 'It ain't 2008 anymore.'

Poor Obama.

As far as spines and candidates, it's an interesting issue, given all the recent talk about Obama copious drug use. Plus, it really is going to be to watch Obama refuse to open up the transcripts from Occidental, Columbia and Harvard.

Oh and speaking of integrity, I'd live, love, love to hear your take on fauxohontas Warren. She lied. She just admitted she lied. And best of all, GASP, she lied to get ahead in the world.

Positively fantastic, right?

Ok we all know im not a fan of bush. but remember even if he did botch things up pretty badly he was our president for 8 years and we should respect that. Being President is not easy.

Also it takes a lot of courage to face his replacement, Obama, who has repeatedly criticized Bush for his poor handling of the financial crisis we where heading too. and to be able to joke with the President, I actually find that kinda cool.

Also this is a first where there has been a event devoid of partisanship between a Republican and a Democrat, isn't that a win in itself.

can some of you please stop being so judgmental over everything and try to look at things in an unbiased view.

just my opinion here, but it would be nice to take a break from all the bickering once in a while, if Obama and Bush can do it for a day why can't you guys do it.

Amen! I am a die-hard Democrat, but Bush definitely deserves his place on that wall. It isn't an easy task. And I have been proud of the way that him and Obama have handled each other personally. Obama calling Bush after the Osama raid; both acknowledging what a hard job the other has; and the sweetness the Bush's showed the Obama girls when coming into the White House. There are few people that understand what a hard, thankless job being President is.

We are clearly in a divisive country where Democrats and Republicans as well as Liberals and Conservatives are in wide differences of opinions and these forums throughout MSNBC are proof positive of this divisiveness. But I will say what a great country we live in when the two sides can STILL be together at the White House and joke among themselves. Is it possible that WE in this forum can do the same? Unlikely for very long but this is a nice break from the "finger pointing". All I can say is "God Bless America" and what a great country, the GREATEST COUNTRY, that we live in..........

Now, speaking of leaving the WH, let's get the current Socialist out of OUR house. The current Oval office occupant is in need of moving back to his homeland of Indonesia (where he got citizenship to visit for a while) and leave the USA to its citizens. LMAO about all those who insult anyone who brings this point up. Sorry you are too blind to see the truth. Tell me, how does a "college student" afford to travel to Indonesia on the "poor income" of his single mom???? Hmmmmmm, makes you wonder. Oh thats right, I was able to do anything I wanted before I graduated from college. Everyone KNOWS college students are SO WEALTHY. Right? Hmmmm? Liberals?? Did he use welfare? Did he use "found" money. Wow, if he found it he would have to report it to the IRS. Did he do that???? Anyway you slice this POTUS' stories, it is OBVIOUS he needs to go. Like you, I am not a fan of former President Bush; however, I respect the office that he held and the tremendous burden of responsibility that office places upon its occupant.

My hope is that people who disagree with President Obama would have the same respect for the man and his family. If you disagree with him on policy issues, fine....but don't try to make him out to be un-American or non-patriotic just because his point of view is different.

No reason to BASH anyone.

Laura bush was, and is, a lovely lady...and George W. has as much right to have a portrait as did his predecessors.

Remember when he was yucking it up with his 'base', who he fondly referred to as the haves and the have-mores? It was that luncheon where he was looking under the table and chairs in his "hilarious" schtick of "looking for WMD's...nope, not under here". Oh Spanky - you truly are pathetic. The Solyndra investment was highly recommended by Bush. And, yes, turned out bad but at least we are looking into other energy for the country - against all GOP wished since the oil companies own the GOP!

Don't really care about those planted in the crowds today. President Obama will wipe the floor with Romney in November.

Obama admitted his experimentation with drugs. So what? Bush was an alcoholic and a druggie but you voted for him - twice. And, thankfully our current President has more respect for our military than to send them off to unneeded wars for his ego - like Bush.

Warren I frankly don't care about. She's not anyone I vote for so it really doesn't bother me. You know, like the "I'm not a witch" idiot in Nevada probably didn't bother you. (But she was a hell of a lot more embarrassing!)

Fiesty, I have to agree with you, I was smiling too, but not that he was leaving the WH shortly. Because President Obama and his wife were so gracious and warm to the family. As Pres. Obama said you really don't know everything until you sit in the office. The hard choices of both parties who have held the position, I would not relish one bit. And like the President said you are not going to please everyone with the choices and decisions you have made, that is so true. Not everyone in this country is going to agree to the decisions and politics of either party, but today I was proud to be an American and watch this on TV. I don't agree on everything the Bush administration did or what the Obama administration does. But I respect the office they hold. But that doesn't mean I will vote for the same again. I read and decide my vote on the issues, no matter what I am registered as in regarding as party affiliation. Some people just can't get past the party issue and vote accordingly. My mom who was under the democrats rule for many years always told me, as I got older, your vote is private and never talked much about who she voted for. Even my grandparents never talked about who they voted for, it's private they said, and I agree. Everyone who has an issue with the sitting President can voice their opinion, but are they right in that assumption in all aspects? I think not. We are not the fly on the wall to determine why they chose the decision they did or are we privy to the details. Yes mistakes are made in every admistration, but hopefully the ones in power will learn from the prior mistakes. Today was a good day, and the personal feelings in politics were set aside. I wish all of them the best. I can't imagine trying to be the leader of such a nation as the US. It's not so cut and dry as some will say. Peace and Goodwill to you.

I will always call whoever is elected "my president," but I will not honor a man, president or not, who is responsible for the unnecessary deaths of tens of thousands of people and the torture of hundreds if not thousands more. I so could not stand W when he was a Pres - I quit reading/listening/following *any* news for 4 very long years, 2004-2008. What I call my personal Dark Ages...

It's only later that I realized that it really was not his fault... And I really mean it. Imagine yourself being a Pres with Uncle Dick as a Veep! Geez, talk about an active/passive combo. But I am the first one to admit that W did mellow towards the end of his 8yr term, and became more presidential than he ever was! And that tells me - he was never the evil dude I always thought he was, and in the end he found the courage to stand up to Dick Cheney. Good for him! So, I really do not begrduge him anymore.

Cheney? Well, I'm sure I will find some ways to humanize him too, I bet his father beat him as a child, or something. But not at this time...

I do respect the office. It's sort of like the old expression from Commodore Stephen Decatur, "My country, right or wrong!" I feel the same way about the presidency. He was my president, right or wrong, but the problem was that his policies not only affected people's lives negatively in numerous different ways, he also ended people's lives without need in many different ways. I respect the position Bush was in. He made choices. He chose poorly.

It appears the new distortion of the day is that Solyndra was Bush's baby .....Are you kidding me ?

Bush put an end to Solyndra funding upon learning of their financial instability. Solyndra had received a "going concern" report from their independent CPA's which is basically a statement "we don't think they are going to financially survive".

The obama administration took the ball and kept the campaign contributions from Solyndra's hierarchy, fast tracked it and rammed it through so Biden could make a timely speech. Obama OWNS Solyndra from start to its dismal finish. Obama even obliged their eventual bankruptcy by putting others ahead in line over U.S. debt ..... basically a financial giveaway should they go bust ..... which they did !

Lie all you care to, but Solyndra and Obamacare belong to the Dems.

Shouldn't they be hanging Dick Cheney as well with Bush?

Nonetheless - Bush's humor today was quite good - especially calling out his mom and asking for a Tie w Laura.

This INDEPENDENT thought that the warmth of the portrait presentation was handled with class, humor, and an authentic genuine enjoyment for those who attended.

          No reason to BASH anyone.

Laura bush was, and is, a lovely lady...and George W. has as much right to have a portrait as did his predecessors.

The President was complimentary of the transition, and ONCE AGAIN, lauded the Bush Administration for their efforts in the capture of Bin Laden.

Nothing to snicker about....so let's not be petty.

          Politics aside...PLEASE.

What I find interesting is that folks who add to the vine, including myself, have clearly already decided who they will vote for come November.

You would be able to tell an undecided voter, mostly independents, by their posting. It would likely be a question rather than a statement. We need to ask a lot more questions and stop littering the vine with our personal comments.

          Don't you agree?

AND ... sometimes our personal comments are in response to an idiots statement ... are the independents the only ones to respond ... with a question????

AND ... there's nothing wrong in already knowing who you're going to vote for ... and if you think that independents are going to make that decision by something they read here ... get real Tommy .....

"And Obama gave Bush his due for their shared role in hunting down Osama bin Laden:

"That's why my first call, once American forces were safely out of harm's way, was to President Bush because protecting our country is neither the work of one person nor the task of one period of time. It's an ongoing obligation that we all share". So, you see, it was not Mr. Obama alone as others think and make claims to, that this end came about. Admission by Mr. Obama himself.

Election year changes a lot of of things. For example:

"Much has been made of the difference between the speech given by President Bush when the U.S. captured Saddam Hussein and that given by President Obama when bin Laden was killed, with the former focusing on the bravery of the troops and the latter seemingly focusing on the president's own role in bin Laden's killing. But I'm not here to be petty and parse words, and in any event actions are much more important than speeches. Last year the president did not gloat over killing bin Laden, and he deserved praise, just as his complete about-face this year, in order to win votes, deserves to be criticized.

He cannot leave the US for fear of being arrested for being a war criminal. The rest of the world agrees, this guy belongs in jail. So keep toting him as a great pesident, to the rest of the world he will always represent a dark period of American history.

Mitt will have to make do with hanging his photo in some restaurant he regularly eats at - if they'll let him.

I can't tell. On the one hand they are really good at trying to cacoon themselves away from dissenting views [a la Feisty and her use of the ignore button], but how do you explain this?

Today's polling is terrible for O when compared to just last month. Much Like the Wisc. Polling. Every every night big Eddy Schultz is talking about the race being tied.

Now Schultz is a straight up monkey, but our Gal Anna Molley does it too.

Most likely it's the result of the libs hero worship of this man. Results obviously do not matter else the polling numbers would be that much worse. You see Spanky, it's not the results of the liberal actions, it's the intentions that the liberals so much admire about their hero's like with Obama. Use that as filter when reading some of the lefties posts here and you start to understand a little about the left wing delusions they spew. Not that they are correct or anything, but it just shows how nuts they really are.

Now Schultz is a straight up monkey, but our Gal Anna Molley does it too.

AM really journeyed of the reservation the other day when she attempted to connect Romney's behavior while in high school to that of Robert Byrd's work in the KKK. Certainly pushing around another kid in school isn't the highlight of any ones life, but it's a little hard to compare that to man whose main goal was to eradicate a certain race from the country.

And we wonder why the elected are so partisan? We had the opportunity to celebrate a non-partisan moment, where President George W. Bush (nope, I didn't vote for him and quite frankly loathe his policies, but he was still the President of these amazing, incredible United States and deserves that respect) was funny, mostly articulate and poignant in his love for his father, but all the partisan hacks could not either (i) acknowledge that, or (ii) shut their foaming pie holes and simply not post.

I, unfortunately, am as partisan as the next person and in my less stellar moments, even more so. Maybe a time to take a page from Mahatma Gandhi. "Be the change that you wish to see in the world". Or, as you're much more likely to do, just go back to seeing the world through whatever singular focus you choose, all the while complaining about that "other guy" and his myopia.

agreed. I wanted to come post about how I chuckled at GWB's wit when telling Obama to ask "WWGD"

then was disapointed to see everyone just freaking out as usual

Did the artist paint the burning towers in the background? How about the names of the 4000 dead U.S. troops on the wall behind him? Or how about Dubya waterboarding someone in a secret CIA prison?

Obama will be elected to a second term just like GW Bush, and the election is almost eerily similar.

Romney and Kerry are both Massachusetts politicians, neither draw much excitement from their own parties, and people will vote for them only to vote AGAINST the President.

Wow ! Maybe you deserve a visit from the FBI ! You do realize, don't you, that you just posted a threat to a former President on a public website ???

Wait for the knock on your door ..... where is Tyler or Sally today ?

Jim - I'm sure cincytoy is just kidding around. After all, wasn't Bush just the biggest joke ever perpetrated against the American public.

We have four living former presidents. That is a record. Can you imagine the conversations behind closed doors directed at the current pretender? Every move this president makes must put a smile on their faces. Like watching a high school coach running a NFL team. They want to say "Don't do that, you idiot" but they cannot.

Actually, I remember seeing a picture with Bill, Richard, Jimmy, George Sr. and Gerald at the funeral of someone...

Road - you're clearly 3 1/2 years behind in your assessment. Our current President is doing a very good job with a real mess he inherited from the buffoon!

And seeking you continue to believe the hype the media feeds you. The labor participation rate is at the lowest point since the 1990's. It was Obama that had all of the information from all of his advisers that promised us he'd cut the deficit in his first year. As the article said - it must have been hard for Obama to face the man that he blames for everything that happens in the world. When is Obama going to man-up and own his record?
