Obama seen as best for women, but warning signs on deficit in new poll

A new Kaiser Foundation finds people think President Obama would be better for women than Mitt Romney on a host of issues, including who's looking out for their best interests, who'd be best to deal with the future of the health-care law, education, and even national security.

But the one place where Obama doesn't enjoy big leads is on the federal deficit.

On who looks out for the best interests of women, Obama leads 52-26%. Among women voters, it's 59-25%. But on who's best to deal with the deficit, Obama and Romney are essentially tied, with Obama getting the narrow edge, 40-39%, hardly a good sign for an incumbent president.

That vulnerability is one reason the Romney campaign has been pushing the issue. Even on jobs and the economy, President Obama has a 10-point lead.

Here's the question from the poll:

7. Which presidential candidate, (Barack Obama) or (Mitt Romney), do you trust to do a better job (INSERT AND RANDOMIZE)? How about

(NEXT ITEM)? (ROTATE OPTIONS IN PARENTHESES ACROSS INTERVIEWS, BUT NOT WITHIN SAME INTERVIEW) [READ IF NECESSARY: Do

you trust (Barack Obama) or (Mitt Romney) to do a better job (INSERT ITEM)?]

Based on half sample A (n=613)

                                                                                    Obama             Romney            Both     Neither/other     Don’t know/refused

a. Dealing with the future of the 2010 health care law       50                     31                     1          10                     8

b. Making decisions about women’s reproductive

health choices and services                                           52                     25                     1          14                     8

c. Looking out for the best interests of women               56                     26                     2          10                     6

d. Dealing with the federal budget deficit                        40                     39                     1          11                     9

e. Improving education                                                  53                     27                     3          10                     7

Wait until the average everyday American gets a look at what Willard's plans are for women!

Women will come running to President Obama in droves...

Feisty and Beverly, as we all know, intelligent women are looking past Romney's weak attempts to convince us he is "for" women in any way. He has shown through all of his campaign he believes that women are nothing more than 2nd citizens and should be treated as such.

When President Obama campaigns more and more women show up. We are not impressed with trinkets like the Romney campaign thinks they can toss out to appease female voters. And, the young college age women will turn against him and the conservative movement in droves.

How is it not only women are groping to be close to our President, shake his hand, or get his autograph. People fall asleep when the wooden Mitt speaks.

There are scenes of some amusement on the steps outside the Massachusetts state house, as Romney campaigners and supporters try to squat on the site of the Obama campaign’s press conference scheduled to start shortly.

I'd say this poll looks like dire news for The Mittster.

How badly does he want to be president anyway? He kind of acts like he could take it or leave it, which might be his way of preparing himself for an epic loss in November.

Bring it on!

Obama has done nothing for women or anyone else that is not part of a union or a crony that helped him get elected. Obama does nothing more then talk a good game, which seems to be more then enough for his supporters. This contrived war on women conjured up by Obama is nothing more then an affirmative action moment where women are just trying to grab while the grabbing is good. Let everyone else pay for what a few women think all women should have for free. Obama is if nothing else, one of the all time great panderers. Yes we can is now why we couldn't and the excuses are endless. Other then hatred, division, blame, and partisanship Obama has nothing positive to offer, or he would.

Rick you are an idiot if you think women aren't watching what the republicans are doing to deny us our rights in states. There is no reason for a woman to trust republicans at this point. The Planned Parenthood ad that quotes Romney on repealing Planned Parenthood, Roe v. Wade, stalling about the Lilly Ledbetter Act for equal pay, etc. is awesome. Women need to be reminded time and again about the Teapublican War on Women.

Unfortunately, conservative women like Ann Romney who are married, suburban, often stay-home mothers, who have a husband that provides for them -- Who lack empathy for their sisters who are bread winners with no income from a husband, no life insurance for retirement, who are discriminated against with higher health care costs, lower pay, who therefore do worry about unplanned pregnancies and safety nets like Social Security, Medicare, unemployment, etc. How do you get through to conservative women to fight for women's rights for other women--maybe a sister, a daughter even? Clearly they have been socialized from birth by churches run by men. Gagh!

Beverly in Chicago -- the Urban Dictionary term of Teahadist is what you're looking for. Jon Stewart also did a joke about the "c" word and "n" word having a baby = "socialist." Ain't that the truth with the far-Right extremists these days?

If you look back at Reagan, Bush Sr, Clinton, and Jr....who had the smallest deficits relative to GDP? Why do people constantly think that "Deficits don't matter" Repulicans will lower the deficit once in office?

Firstly, the War on Women isn't something Obama came out with. As far as I can tell, it came out of the blogosphere in reaction to the horribly egregious legislation coming out of state legislatures, i.e.:

Texas attempting to shoulder Planned Parenthood out of its role as a primary care facilitator for poor women.

South Dakota and other states leading the way by proposing legislature to legally allow killing abortion doctors.

Personhood Amendments attempting to define life as beginning at conception (in one place, even earlier), and some places even proposing filing death certificates for miscarriages/abortions and possibly even attempting to investigate miscarriages to ensure no "foul play."

Forcing women in many states, like Texas and Virginia, to go through more hoops and hurdles to obtain what is still an ostensibly legal procedure.

Aside from all these "legal" hurdles, they have made many places so much more hostile to abortion providers that women have to travel for hours just to see a provider. This de facto discrimination puts undo burden on both women and health care providers for what should be a medical decision not involving the state.

So yeah, you guys can take your "there ain't no war on women, it's just a PR gimmick" attitudes and shove them right up your asses. With an ultrasound probe.

My God, Domenico,

Obama trounces Romney in every question in the poll except on the debt, with which he ties Romney and your headline is: Obama seen as best for women, but warning signs on deficit in new poll

50% of women prefer President Obama's handling of Afghanistan vs 28% preferring Romney's plans!

I can think of numerous more accurate headlines you could have written, for instance:

President Obama preferred by women on social issues, foreign policy and handling the economy

Women more confident in President Obama's abilities than in Romney's

Women to Romney: Drop Dead!

Point being, though, that, yes, there are these positives and yet there is a stark drop off on deficit, which is why Romney camp is pushing that issue. Economy, jobs, debt, deficit are central issues.

Given that Democrats have an edge with women, and this poll isn't just women, aren't these results HUGE? I suppose, what you are trying to say is, the Romney campaign is going for the only opening they can see...?

True, Domenico, but let's not ignore the source of the current U.S. budget deficit: two unfunded wars and a tax cut, courtesy of George W. Bush.

The issue now is recovery, and Obama's policies are moving the country in the right direction, slowly but surely.

Romney was asked

"Is there some new idea, some original idea, that you have that you think would lead to a lot of new jobs?"

His response: "The wonderful thing about the economy is that there's not just one element that somehow makes the whole country turn around...It is a whole passel of elements that come together to create a strong economy, and for someone who spent their life in the economy, they understand how that works. And it's very clear, by virtue of the President's record, that he does not, and he is struggling. Look at him right now. He just doesn't have a clue what to do to get this economy going. I do." (TIME, June 4)

"A whole passel" of elements??? Who is Mittens pandering to now, the Appalachian voter who eats possum stew?

The economy gets better every day under Obama's leadership.

Romney doesn't have an answer as to what he, in his wisdom, would do to turn the economy around.

Any gay American that votes Republican is voting against their best interests. Anyone collecting government benefits that votes Republican is voting against their best interests. I'm not interested in helping rich people. They dont need my help. I'm not interested in supporting wars & death. I'm interested in MY rights & the rights of WE THE PEOPLE. (Single women with children, Veterans, the elderly on Social Security & Medicare, the working middle class, the poor, the homeless, the mentally ill, etc, etc) I believe in my heart that this is what God wants- to help those less fortunate. Mitt won't repudiate Rush, or Trump or Ted Nugent or any of the other crazies on the far right. This is because he wants to attract all possible voters and that includes the bigots, women haters, birthers, gun lovers, bigots, religious nuts and any other faction of the lunatic fringe of the Republican party. Should the horrible come to pass and he is elected, I sincerely hope these folks don't expect much out of Romney because he will be unable to deliver. He will take care of his own - rich white guys.

It is what we call family values. It appears that women aren't stupid (I never thought they were) as some rwnj think they are. Barefoot and pregnant doesn't work any more. We don't play "Leave It To Beaver" any more. Actually June Cleaver would probably be for Obama too. Few elections have had as much consequences for women since they could start voting in 1920. I hope the ladies turn out in droves this election. Women know REAL values when they see them.

Strange that if you have a household budget greater than the average annual income and you chose to be a stay at home mom you're a heroine. But, if you're a single mom forced to stay home because there's no way to get babysitting you're a lazy slut with no pride.

So, let's stop all abortions, ADC, birth control, food stamps, job training and stop funding Planned Parenthood. That should create lots of jobs and eliminate the deficit in short order.

People are really brainwashed about the deficit. It can not come down under Romney unless he raises taxes. It will balloon no matter who the president is except Romney will decimate the middle class and poor to keep the rise as low as possible. If Obama loses unless you are incredibly rich your in big trouble.

The bottom line is people vote there pocket books. They have been empty for 4 years and welfare is not an option. Jobless claims are up again for the 4th straight week which proves we are rolling into the 2nd dip of the Obama bailout recession. In all those states where he isn't carrying 50% of the vote now he loses. He has no more room to grow in the polls. He has been campaigning for 4 years and that means he is topped out at that number. Look at incumbent election history and approval ratings. They tell you all you need to know. Romney just secured the nomination and doesn't even have a VP nominee yet. Obama is in deep trouble.

The above cited poll numbers are actuall very good news for President Obama. I think America understands that all Romney does is just carp about Obama - while offering nothing new or visionary. Women show once again that they are smarter than men (include me in the latter). Recent demographic trends indicate that women are studying and reading more, getting more degrees, etc. And, of course, straight women just don't hate gays as much as straight men do. So Republicans can't peel them way with bigotry as easily. Also, women can be counted on to vote in slightly higher numbers than men. (They also make better campaign volunteers.)

The difference between what Obama says and what actions Obama takes should be a warning to all of us as these Obama words point out.

              * In February 2009, Democratic President Barack Obama stated:

I refuse to leave our children with a debt that they cannot
repay. And that means taking responsibility right now, in this administration,
for getting our spending under control.

"Remarks at the Fiscal Responsibility Summit." By Barack Obama. Government
              Printing Office, February 23, 2009. http://www.gpoaccess.gov/presdocs/2009/DCPD200900102.htm

Obama has managed to push this country's debt to almost $16 trillion. There is no way he can make the above statement a reality with his out of control of borrownig and spending.

How can anyone believe anything Obama says?

Obama inherited two wars, a mini-depression, and two tax cuts. Moreover, he tried a grand bargain of 4 trillion dollars in deficit reduction (2/3 cuts and 1/3 tax increases), but the Republicans (who almost all owe their allegiance to Gover Norquist) said, "NO!" And remember the CBO scores Romney's budget plans as WORSE than Obama's on the deficit. His tax and spending plans will INCREASE the deficit at a greater rate. (Romney wants MORE tax cuts and MORE defense spending.) Do the math! Not even his support for the destruction of medicare will make it better.

PS...To the TEA-PARTY nuts ,If You're are going to re"POST" again the lie on "DEFICIT" on our Present President, I'll Cut and Paste this Anology, as your "REPLY".

What is truly amazing his how all you Obama supporters excel at being uninformed. Did Obama have the Bush tax cuts to the rich repealed. NO!

Did Obama propose his tax reform when the democrats had control of Congress, NO! After all, Obama claims its the next best thing to southern fried chicken.

Has Obama done anything to reduce the amount of debt his government is creating, NO!

LIke everything that comes out of his mouth about what he's going to do and then what he does doesn't even come close to being one and the same thing.

Yes, WH @10:08 you are correct!! Sounds like you, I and others in this discussion have been EDUCATING ourselves on the candidates, their backround and views on what this election should be about. WH, if you haven't already, two great pre-election reads are "The President's Club" and "The Amateur". The latter is an eye-opening book about President O'Bama. This is no time to joke around as many discussion posters are doing these days.
