Veepstakes: How to pick a veep

Real Clear’s Cannon looks at the history of picking vice presidents and the considerations, including: geography, ideological balance, doubling, down, complementary choice, diversity, doing the heavy lifting, running alone, and the Hail Mary.

BUSH: Jeb Bush STILL doesn’t want to be veep.

HALEY: In a Facebook chat, the SC governor said, “My preference would be Bobby Jindal or Condi Rice.”

HUCKABEE: Hogan Gidley, Santorum’s ex-spokesman and spokesman for HuckPAC, was pushing Huckabee for veep.  Real Clear’s Conroy writes: Gidley is going to call Romney camp members to push Huckabee’s cause. “The way the news cycle is now, the vice presidency is more high-profile than it used to be, and you need to have someone who’s vetted and doesn’t have any major surprises,” Gidley said. “I think one of the reasons to pick Mike Huckabee is that he’s done it before. He’s been vetted, he’s good on the stump, he’s great on a debate stage, he’s inspiring, he was a governor, he energizes the base.” (h/t: GOP 12)

THUNE: Sununu says “no question” Thune’s on the list.

Jeb Bush -- Too superior to Romney to play second fiddle regardless of interest.

Nikki Haley, Bobby Jindal, and Thune will not add anything to the ticket. In the case of Haley, she has scandals to bring to the table.

Condi Rice, not interested, and once again more qualified than Romney.

Huckabee -- He hates Romney and has a good paying gig he won't give up for a miserable gamble like this.

Who ever it is, if Romney numbers keep getting better, you can bet your life that Hillary will be asked by Obama. Biden will develop some type of issue or he will say that he wants to spend more time with his family.

Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell fits in two of Cannon's criteria.

McDonnell has been on the short list since the beginning. Despite the liberal attacks regarding the issue of ultrasounds, and informed consent for an abortion, McDonnell remains extremely popular in Virginia.

In my opinion, his selection would lock up the critical swing state of Virginia for the GOP.

Not to mention it would aggravate liberals.

Sorry Bob but us Liberals would be over joyed with Bob McDonnell as VP (vaginal probe) pick. The comedians would be particularly pleased, it would give them material for months.

How was Condi Rice missed by this story? She is, after all, the Republican Party's most popular/favored option.

      Romney/Rice 2012!
