More 2012: Warren admits to claiming Native-American status

MASSACHUSETTS: The story that just keeps on keepin’ on…  “Democratic Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren acknowledged for the first time late Wednesday night that she told Harvard University and the University of Pennsylvania that she was Native American, but she continued to insist that race played no role in her recruitment,” the Boston Globe writes.

Warren said in a statement, “At some point after I was hired by them, I . . . provided that information to the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard. My Native American heritage is part of who I am, I’m proud of it and I have been open about it.”

The Globe does point out: “Two key people who recruited her to Harvard have said they did not know of her purported heritage or take it into account when hiring her. The school did not promote her as a Native American when she was hired, despite the fact that it was under intense pressure to diversify its faculty with more minorities.”

Hey everyone, guess what? The rich are still paying 15% taxes and most of us are paying over 25%. Every political story that comes out that is not about that fact, is a distraction so the rich can continue to pay 15% and the rest of us 25%. And the difference between Brown and Warren is that Brown signed the Grover Norquist No New Tax Pledge. He supports the shrinking of the middle class. And the rich are STILL paying 15% and we are paying over 25%.

These bastards are so afraid of Gover Norquest it's downright embarrassing. Out of the entire GOP Congress, only a handful have refused to sign it.

My adoptive mother was 1/8 Cherokee, and believe it or not, when I was adopted in 1961, they took her Cherokee heritage into account - back then, they tried to match babies to parents according to race, and because she was eligible for tribal membership (although she never bothered to sign up) they ended up with me, and all I know is that I'm somewhere between 1/4 and 1/2 Cherokee, plus the Scots-Irish and French. My mom's family are all big, ruddy folk who just look like your average white folks from the midwest, and I look about as Cherokee as Sam Bradford. My mom always told me to mark down my Cherokee heritage on any form that I filled out because, as she said, you just never know. (I think she thought there might have been some money in it somewhere, which there might have been if anyone in her family had ever bothered to register!) So - I dutifully mark down "Native American" and "Caucasian," but I don't think I've ever gotten a job or not gotten a job because of either of those designations.

I don't see any reason why Barack Obama couldn't mark down his race as "Caucasian," if he wanted to - mostly, people go by what you LOOK like, though, and if a person doesn't LOOK ethnic, then I don't think they're going to get any benefits for BEING ethnic!!! (Did Sam Bradford get any special consideration for being part Cherokee? I doubt it...) At any rate, I don't see where it's that big a deal.

At the end of a long day occassionally peeking in to the forums, I am left with one unavoidable conclusion. The right-wingers either outright lie about facts or twist them so much to their advantage that all truth was left far behind. And to think that these people are about half of our population. Somewhere on one of these posts Plotinus showed testing that indicated the more conservative (right wing) one is, the lower their intelligence scores. I wonder if they have tests for ethical scoring? If not, maybe they need to.

What alternate reality do you come from? It is the Democratic candidate for Senate who lied about her ancestry.

      urong,

My parents and grandparents on both sides of the family told us that we had Cherokee back down the line. Me, like Warren, never questioned it. It would seem quite plausible that anyone whose family has been in America for the number of generations that mine has would have some Cherokee blood. Whether or not it can be "proven" that I have, I still mention it occassionaly. Does that make me a liar? Think not. Nor do I feel a need for DNA testing to prove it. What my family passed down to me is plenty good.

As far as her leveraging this to get a job, methinks you need to read some more. Perhaps the spokesman for the law school was using it for some kind of leverage, but she never did.

And I also think it speaks highly of her that she appears to be proud of this heritage. Most of the white folk used to think the only good indian was a dead indian, remember?

There is nothing in the actual facts of the story to indicate that Ms. Warren lied about anything. She is part Native American, just as much as the current Chief of the Cherokee Nation. There is also nothing in the facts to indicate that she ever used this fact of her heritage for personal gain or advantage over anyone.

If you would take the time to read the actual facts, you might realize how stupid your question really is.

        hjack,

Where did she lie? She simply stated what her family had told her. This is what I was getting at in my original post. You are taking the FACT that she has not been able to or taken the time to back up her statement and twisting it to make her look like a liar. Typical reichwing tactic.

Try this one on for size then. http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/the-scientific-fundamentalist/201003/why-liberals-are-more-intelligent-conservatives

I did some searches and came up with the above link. The search engines are full of the same info so if you're interested just take your pick. There was even one that was somewhat apologetic about it and tried to show extenuating circumstances that made you guys look so stupid in the tests. From your post and your uncanny ability to twist facts to fit your emotional state, I would assume you fit into the little red square down at the bottom left on the page I listed. A little above baboons, probably.

The same can be said about literacy. Read the facts and you'll understand that there is no issue of integrity in this story whatsoever. She told the truth, she never tried to make anything of it and her opposition is trying to twist it into something that simply isn't there.

This, by the way, is the only thing that Scott Brown has any real talent for doing.

Despite a couple of Democrats employed at Harvard claiming that she was not hired based upon her phony claim that she is a Cherokee, perhaps they are no more honest than she is. When you have two candidates for office and both are qualified, and one is a known liar, why vote for the liar?

Does repeating family history as told to you by your own family make you a liar? Methinks not, and that this whole issue is another reichwing tactic to confuse and mislead the public. Character assassination? And really, it is such a non-issue guys.

My family on both sides have said we have Cherokee blood, and if I had told that story to someone who called me a liar, the fight would be on. Don't disrespect my ancestors.

Can I prove it? Of course not. Nor would I waste my time trying to if someone challenged me on it. My father and mother's words were good enough. But it is kinda interesting and maybe someday I'll find it worthwhile to check into. Not to see if my parents were "liars" but just for the general information.

My parents could not get certain educational benefits for me because they made too much money. We weren't rich, just middle class with a lot of expenses. That wasn't fair, but that is the way the system works. I went to school with african american girls who got there through welfare. I had to pay it back, and they didn't. If you need help financially or an edge to compete in the job world, I don't see anything wrong with it whatsoever. I am 1/8(?) Cherokee (My grandparents were both half Irish and half Cherokee on my dad's side), and I listed Cherokee on my job application (along with caucasion), it was the first time I had seen Native American on a job application, and I know that I am the only employee at my location who is listed as American Indian out of 500 people. If that helped me get in, I am not ashamed of it. It is the truth. I went through the normal interview process, was tested, I have the qualifications and I do my job well. If you choose not to use it, and you have it, that is your decision. In this day and age, you have to stand out.

In a simpler time you told the truth or you lied. Then came a time when Reagan got caught with some real whoppers and the GOP spinmeisters invented a new term - he didn't lie; he just misspoke. In the past year they even improved on that. When Senator Kyl made the outrageous statement on the Senate floor that 97% of what Planned Parenthood does is abortions, he didn't even blink. His office quickly told us that it was not intended to be a statement of fact. I'm assuming that this is the new standard, so I sugest that Ms. Warren just simply adopt that phrase and we can then move on to what she and Senator Brown think should be our national priorities.

"Killing Cong in the jungles of Vietnam" but never left the States and was in the reserves to boot but declared he was a Vietnam vet and now she has "high cheekbones" so that makes her 1/32 Cherokee. Those two people aren't very happy being who they are so they have to make stuff up. Does she call her husband "Chief" and does she use the command "How" around the house very much? Does she wear a headdress made of feathers too? How much dumber can it get for her. The votes should send her ass packing back to the tribe IMO.
