Subscribe to RSSMASSACHUSETTS: The story that just keeps on keepin’ on… “Democratic Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren acknowledged for the first time late Wednesday night that she told Harvard University and the University of Pennsylvania that she was Native American, but she continued to insist that race played no role in her recruitment,” the Boston Globe writes.
Warren said in a statement, “At some point after I was hired by them, I . . . provided that information to the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard. My Native American heritage is part of who I am, I’m proud of it and I have been open about it.”
The Globe does point out: “Two key people who recruited her to Harvard have said they did not know of her purported heritage or take it into account when hiring her. The school did not promote her as a Native American when she was hired, despite the fact that it was under intense pressure to diversify its faculty with more minorities.”

What is the big deal? The head of the Cherokee Nation used similar documentation as Warren and, like her, is 1/32 AI. This isn't an issue.
What's an issue is that Scott Brown is purely a Wall Street stooge. And that's why the Republicans would rather keep focus on this non-story. Hopefully, MA won't fall for such an obvious deflection.

The News story will be when Mitt Romney admits that he is Mexican/American. His father born in Mexico, his mother in America. Census records prove it. The COPY of his birth certificate HE had posted on the interet, PROVES it.
Yes, Romney's father was born in Mexico, but to American Parents, which according to US Law, makes him a US citizen at Birth. This is nothing unusual. Many children of Military members are born overseas, but are American citizens.
The constitutional issue that all of you birthers claim invalidates Romney or Obama for the Presidency, is being misinterpreted by you out of political convenience. The requirement for becoming president is that you are born an American Citizen, not born in America. Even if Barack Obama had been born in Kenya, his mother, as a US Citizen, could have decided to have him be a US Citizen from birth as well.
The birther issue is a non starter on both candidates. This issue is only brought up by people who lack the intellect to actually engage in the deeper political discussion here.

As has been stated before she lied. Things would drastically improve in the country if people called a spade a spade instead of backing an individual because they agree with them ideologically. I have my own political beliefs but the last thing I want to be associated with is a liar. Yes she lied. There is no record of her having even a smidgeon of Cherokee Indian blood. Again, this country would go along way towards healing if people would start having a little integrity.

A very white looking Native American very easily could have lied on a cense record simply to "pass" and not be harrassed or killed.
I grew up being told that I am part German, Irish, French, Native American...but I have no real abilty to prove or confirm that. My genetic links on my mothers side dont go very far because her family is non-existant in many ways for a variety of reasons...that doesnt mean I am not any (or all) of those things simply because i cant prove it.

So many of you are missing the point. According to genealogy experts and Warren herself, they have absolutely no record of any Native American blood within her ancestry. So claiming she's Native American or even just 1/32 Native American to voters or Harvard is lying. I'm 1/16th Native American and can prove it by getting a copy of my maternal great-grandmother's birth record which lists her mother as Native American. It isn't difficult to prove if its true, especially for a politician.
Its also dishonest to avoid a question for weeks before finally admitting something. I wouldn't label her a liar for avoiding a question because she didn't contradict herself but it does speak to her character a little. Shouldn't we demand a little more from a candidate for Senate, regardless of whether we agree with her positions?

Bottom line is she is a liar. If Mass chooses to elect known liars, they (and we) get what is deserved.
People actually still believe Warren has proof she is part Cherokee? The originally cited genealogist has already recanted his proof. He ultimately said he got his proof from a mention of a 2006 Warren family newsletter which stated there was a marriage license application. The genealogist then found out that marriage license applications did not exist during the time in question, so he has since stated he has no proof whatsoever. Where are people getting this "proof" from? From the original assertion that has already been recanted?

Why is this a big deal? Because our nanny government has chosen to reward certain ethnic groups with special privileges, and have further defined those ethnic groups in finite terms. Being 1/32 Cherokee makes her no more NA, than being 1/8 Hispanic, makes me "Latino". Many folks are from mixed heritages. The problem is cherry-picking which one to use when trying to scam the system...

Do you have any idea how many senior citizens do not have a birth certificate? Do you know how many were birthed at home in a day when there were few hospitals and even fewer doctors? my grandmother was born in a covered wagon somewhere between the Canadian border and Nebraska, her mother was 1/2 Sioux , she has no birth certificate so she can not prove it , yet you and your stupidity will slam someone because you say she can't prove it? If she believed or believes that she has American Indian blood in her veins, she is not lieing. Many people have stories handed down to them that they have Indian blood. Most of them just accept it, tell their friends and move on. When they tell their friends they are part Indian, they are not lieing.
The point is, if she believes the stories handed down from her parents or grandparents she is not a liar. There isn't enough evidence to prove or disprove her claims. Case closed - it is a non issue.
Maybe she believes she was hatched from a chicken egg or her parents came from Krypton, it doesn't matter. She made a claim she couldn't prove. It was her error she decided to list it on her application. What if I said I was the second coming of Christ on my job application? There isn't enough evidence to prove or disprove that claim either.
I think the sadder thing is that ancestry/race was on the application in the first place, and Harvard did some of their hiring based on race, encourgaged by the government.
I think we should have government-mandated genetic testing to insure racial identification is 100% accurate. We can put tattoos on people's foreheads with the percentage of their top 4 or 5 racial backgrounds.
This way we can be sure of how to tell one race from another, and no one can lie about their race.

The school clearly said that her heritage did not come into play. The recruiters clearly said that heritage never came up nor brought up (meaning there was never a focus on her racial background). She clearly state that she was proud of her heritage, but it was not beyond that...
So where was the point that she lied? where was the point that the school took race preference? shere was the point that the appointment was made base upon her heritage? As someone else pointed out earlier it isn't like Elizabeth invented the Cherokee thing. Her family's Cherokee ancestry was something relayed to her by her family. Who doesn't trust their family when it comes to ancestry? I've been told a fair number of tales by my family regarding our ancestry and I believe them.
Who on here has the right to try to tell her about her own family history? How do you know that she's not telling the truth? You act as if she needs to prove TO YOU what her ancestory says. She only needs to prove it to Harvard who can make any decision they want as a private organization. I thought Conservatives were all about leaving the government out of private decisions??? I'm not "Native American" because someone's ancestors got here before mine. Though I and several generations before me were born in America, I a cannot claim I am a native American. So I guess I am homeless when it comes to having a native country. When people ask what's my native country, what do I say?

Before you call someone stupid, perhaps you should research a little. Many genealogy experts, including the New England Historical Genealogical Society, which initially backed up Warren’s claim, do have access to records of her ancestors going back far enough to either prove or dispute Mrs. Warren’s claim. They have birth records, death records and marriage records (which was the initial proof that later turned out to be inaccurate by NEHGS standards). Unlike your grandmother or seniors without birth certificates, Warren’s ancestry records aren’t sparse and have been researched a great deal over the last month. Based on those records, not only is there no evidence to back her claim, here is a great deal of evidence that disputes her having any Native American ancestry. So, if all of her parents, grandparents, great-grandparents and great-great grandparents did not have any Native American ancestry, its fairly safe to assume she doesn’t, especially since she hasn’t specified where that ancestry came from.
Before you accuse someone of bias or stupidity, perhaps you should do a little research and possibly learn the usage of the word “there” vs. “their”, it will make your argument much stronger.

On my grandmother's side she was 1/4 American Indian. Many years later, while applying for scholarships I saw one being given for those with American Indian heritage. BTW, I am also Irish and frankly look almost entirely Irish and so I laughed at the prospects of applying for that scholarship feeling that I was too far removed to be legit. So I wanted that scholarship to go to somebody that had a lot more Indian blood in them than I did. Warren felt differently. She is how much Indian? 1/32? Please.
The jacket on the Obama book says he was born in Kenya. Obama says that isn't so, but he was o.k. if it was used to promote the book even though it was a lie. He could also use the excuse that he didn't see the jacket, but who in the world has a book written about them that doesn't look at the jacket? He used that Kenya connection to make him look exotic, and Warren did the same to enhance who they really are. I could have used my Indian connection, but took the high road feeling it was "using" the system.

You that can state you were part Cherokee, please be reminded that if your Ancestors were not involved with the Bataan style DEATH MARCH aka the "Trail of Tears", your Ancestors were not listed in "The Book" that was written naming all that took part in the march to Oklahoma. Thus you cannot "Prove" your ancestry. Been there, tried that.
I believe most tribal membership is cut off at 1/8th, and using an ineligible percentage is both wrong and dumb. I am 1/8th Pottawatamie, but because my grandmother was not registered, that is not open to me, and becomes irrelevant, except when I am asked my heritage (because I apparently look Native American, although I never thought so). It was funny when the daughter of a cousin asked if she was eligible for Indian Health Services. She actually applied. I had to tell her that even if her dad had been eligible, being 1/8th (same grandmother), she was not. As an attorney in "Indian Country," I encounter this issue periodically.

I am not really sure of the point to this article. Warren IS part Native American. You are supposed to put that down on your application for employment in many places, which she did. They did not hire her because of that. They hired her because of her qualifications. She did not make much todo about it. Her opponent's SuperPAC tried to make a big deal out of it and failed. She did not tell a lie, they did not catch her in anything.

All groupings by "race" are mixtures of genes from many previous tribes/ethnic groups that have the same ultimate ancestors. We are all part of the same race with the same ancestors. I am 1/8 Sac and Fox, 1/8 African American, and 3/4 German/Irish/English/Portuguese, Italian, Polish and Russian. I am a Heinz 57 just like every person that has family here for many generations. I don't qualify for mocassins, I would be listed as a "Negro" if I was born in the South, and I am 6' tall and look any type of WASP. I do mention I am part Native American, sometimes it just comes up in conversation. People are amazed at the AA, since I was a blond headed child. So I guess the only way to put it is "I am an American."
Like any one this ancestry nontroversy matters. It's just a distraction from Scott "Centerfold" Brown giving banks 19 million of tax payer money in exchange for his vote on Dodd-Frank. As if TARP and the economic meltdown weren't bad enough, Brown gave the banks an additional 19 million of YOUR money, not as a loan, but in return for their campaign contributions to him. That's what matters--Throw Brown out!

This precious America has long standing broken commitments perpetrated entirely to secure land rights to themselves. This still stands contested in the courts. Has been for 40 or more years, if recollection serves. The other response I typically get from abusers when confronted is, "let us not live in the past, you have to look forward."

Daryl - Did you read the article? MSNBC's short article above tells you how her story has changed. Even better, go read the AP and ABC report that gives much more details. Then maybe you will understand that she not only did lie, she also was dishonest when she sidestepped the question for weeks.
Ram - I don't deny its a diversion tactic but its Warren's fault its still in the headlines. By refusing to answer the question for weeks, Warren turned this into a major story. And now admitting part of the Republican claims are true makes her look even worse. Her campaign should have done a better job at advising her and she should have been more upfront.

Her claims have been researched and rejected by the Cherokee nation, so she isn't claiming a heritage she actually has at all. She lied about it so she could benefit from Affirmative Action as a minority; Harvard reported her as a minority hire, violating Federal Law since what constitutes Native American Heritage is plainly laid out and even if what Warren said wasn't a lie, she would still be ineligible. Harvard qualified under various Federal financial aid programs due to this lie as well. She now admits she lied, but makes up a new lie that she didn't benefit, when she did. The rest of your post appears to be inane garbage cut and pasted from one of the various liberal websites that people who want to live off the labor of others apparently love. Scott Brown is a true bi-partisan legislator and while I don't agree with him on everything at least he's not a fraud and a liar like Warren.

She has repeatedly been asked for proof by the local media and can provide none. In fact her relatives were actually involved in rounding up the Cherokee's and putting them on the trail of tears. The fact is she lied to get an advantage and apparently if you are a Democrat that is perfectly acceptable. If you have an ancestor on the rolls, you get a CDIB card. However, the people that got out of the Trail of Tears in Arkansas, florida or anywhere in between cannot get a card, and cannot get any advantages of being NA. My ex was 7/16 due to his Mother's grandfather being on the rolls. And he had a card. But you cannot use any advantages of any Native American group without a card. So even if Ms Warren told everybody in town she was part Cherokee, she could not get any advantages at all. I'm part Sac and Fox, but because there were a few generations between my ancestor and me, I cannot claim any at all, and without a CDIB card, I can't get any casino money, can't use any medical facilities, and cannot get any freebies for education.

My college roommate, - an ex-Marine from Iowa, - did not look Native American to me, but claimed to be because he was 1/16 Cherokee. This is how Native Americans look at it. 1/16th is enough to claim identity. It took a lot less than that, - one drop of blood, - for people to be labeled African-American by slave-holders & their sympathizers.
I have seen CDIB cards for card holding Cherokees that state something like 7/264th. Or something outrageous. One drop of Cherokee blood is enough for the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma. But to get that card, you must have an ancestor that was there at the time they took the rolls in Tahlequah Oklahoma in the late 1800s or early 1900s. There were many Cherokees that snuck out of the Trail of Tears in Oklahoma. I know descendents of these people. And they cannot get a CDIB card because they left. Who knew that sneaking out of the Trail of Tears would be a lousy deal, that staying until they reached Oklahoma would mean free medical and education for all of your ancestors for generations.

However, the school benefits are good.

I did not find out about my Cherokee portion of my Heinz 57 bloodline until I was in the last job I would ever work at and was in the final stage of my college education. I suppose that I could add that to my entrance ap if I go back to grad school. The thing is, there are a lot of us who have this type of heritage; discussed in one part of the family; not in another. I have always been honorable in my dealings with others; so, I think the Cherokee, whom I now live near after 62 years at the beach in SoCal, would think I was OK to represent.
