NBC-Marist polls: Obama, Romney deadlocked in three key states

Now that Mitt Romney is the official GOP presidential nominee, President Obama placed a call to the former governor to congratulate him. Meanwhile both campaigns have already spent a combined $85 million on TV ads. NBC's Chuck Todd reports.

President Barack Obama and presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney are deadlocked in three key presidential battleground states, according to a new round of NBC-Marist polls.

In Iowa, the two rivals are tied at 44 percent among registered voters, including those who are undecided but leaning toward a candidate. Ten percent of voters in the Hawkeye State are completely undecided.

In Colorado, Obama gets support from 46 percent of registered voters, while Romney gets 45 percent.

And in Nevada, the president is at 48 percent and Romney is at 46 percent.

Read the full Nevada poll

These three states are all battlegrounds that Obama carried in 2008, but George W. Bush won in 2004.

“These are very, very competitive states,” says Lee Miringoff, director of the Marist College Institute for Public Opinion, which conducted these polls. “Everything is close.”

Results from NBC-Marist polling in three other battleground states released last week – Florida, Ohio and Virginia – showed Obama with narrow leads in each state.

Optimism, pessimism and enthusiasm
In Colorado, Iowa and Nevada, a more optimistic attitude about the U.S. economy is working in Obama’s favor. Majorities in each of the three states believe the worst is behind us, rather than yet to come.

In addition, majorities in these states say that the president mostly inherited the current economic conditions.

David Axelrod, a senior adviser for President Obama's re-election campaign, speaks with TODAY's Matt Lauer about the President's strategies for taking on the battleground states and rekindling the enthusiasm from 2008.

But what seems to be hurting Obama – and helping Romney – is a sense that the nation is on the wrong track, with 54 percent in Iowa, 55 percent in Nevada and 56 percent in Colorado sharing that belief.

First Thoughts: Still fighting on GOP turf

Asked which candidate would do a better job on the economy, respondents in Colorado (45 percent to 42 percent) and Iowa (46 percent to 41 percent) picked Romney over Obama. But the two men were tied in Nevada (44 percent to 44 percent).

What’s more, Romney leads Obama in Colorado and Iowa among those expressing a high level of enthusiasm, while the president leads among those voters in Nevada.

Obama’s approval rating, Nevada’s Senate race
The NBC-Marist poll also shows that Obama’s approval rating is above water in Iowa (46 percent approve, 45 percent disapprove), and it’s underwater in Colorado (45 percent to 49 percent) and Nevada (46 percent to 47 percent)

And in Nevada’s competitive Senate contest, the survey finds incumbent Republican Sen. Dean Heller in a tight race with Democrat Shelley Berkley, with Heller getting 46 percent among registered voters and Berkley getting 44 percent.

President Obama phones Mitt Romney to congratulate him for locking up the GOP nomination. NBC's Steve Handelsman reports.

These NBC-Marist polls were conducted May 22-24 by landline and cell phone of 1,030 registered voters in Colorado, 1,106 registered voters in Iowa and 1,040 registered voters in Nevada. The margin of error in all three surveys is plus-minus 3.0 percentage points.

This only goes to show how incredibly STUPID Americans are. How many lies does Romney have to tell before they finally realize what he is? But we all knew all this. Despite 8 years of unmitigated disaster, two illegal wars and a devastated economy under Bush Americans gave Republicans 18 months to preform miracles and when they could not put a new Mercedes in everyone´s garage, out they go and right back in go the ones who caused all the problems in the first place. Seriously??

Every single statistic shows the economy is not only steadily improving but is now better than anytime during the Bush administration. ALL of them. But all Republicans have to do is to stand up and SAY the opposite and WHAM, Obama becomes the bad guy. What ever happened to facts? Oh, that´s right: They began disappearing when the Religious Right began to take over until now nothing matters except what their chosen leaders SAY.

If you people put these people back into control you deserve exactly what you are going to get.

"The nation will emerge from this nightmare in November." Really? To what? Bush redux? Another son working out his psychological issues with the father. Romney has nothing to offer the country except cutting Social Security, Medicare and social programs, and starting up wars to justify more deficit spending. Come on.

The question that puzzles me is, "Is the nation headed in the right track or the wrong track?" While it is media-smart, it is truth dumb, because there are so many ways to interpret the question that to connect it to any President in office is disingenuous and wrong. "The nation" - undefined - could be the public or communities at large or the federal government as a whole (Show me one person that thinks Congress is on the right track). Right or wrong "track" could reflect moral direction, fiscal direction, employment/economic, social direction, or any combination in the respondent's mind -- It's simply false measurement of the competence and effectiveness of any President. In pounding this Q day after day, the media are manipulating the public into holding Presidents as all-powerful gods/king/Wizards of Oz, which they can never be. Shame on the media for using a question like that as their bell weather for 20-second sound-byte Americans.

Well NBC means "Never Been Creditable" to me..Why they didn't publish this weekends Yahoo! Poll will be evident here in a second...Amazingly the Poll was "pulled" very quickly since I thought they kept their polls up for at least a week or a Month, but maybe in being in cahoots and knowing this Poll was coming out I can see why they pulled their Poll...and Remember Yahoo! is one of the Media Bastions of Liberal Socalists.....LMAO..

Obama got 19% of the Votes.

Romney got 37% of the Votes...

40% said they would Vote for ANYONE OTHER THAN OBAMA......

4% said they hadn't made up their mind yet.....Lol's on that group..

And I believe that is a far more accurate Poll than you'll ever see from the Liberal Brown Nosing Media....Especially because it has real and accurate numbers and NOT MASSAGED by some Brown Nosing Media specialist to give an impression that is not really true in favor of the little incompetent twerp himself....

      Reply#61 - Thu May 31, 2012 8:43 AM EDT

Really ignorant people on here today. I can't believe how stupid some people are when it comes to Romney and the rest of the Republican Congress, Govenors and other decision makers who say they have American people best interest. They do not have our back....saw a report last night where GOP millionaires expected to spend billion dollars in negative ads against President and Democratic candidates in exchange for favors given by Romney IF he gets in office. People really do we want that kind of government? Middle class and poor do not have a chance with Romney. We as American people need to wake up; do your research, read and make yourself knowlegable of what each candidate will bring to the table....stop listening to FOX News the most biased so called news station available today....they do not report the news unless you want to call all the lies they tell about the President and the lies they allow Romney to get away with news. I am shocked to see how many people fall for their stupidity.....my gosh you have to shake your head in disbelief. As far as the poll results...don't believe they are that close...think because Romney finally clinched the nomination the numbers reflects GOP getting behind their candidate that were waiting to see who got the win. Now the real battle begins and all of Romney's skeletons will be brought out for us to see....job creator my A## guy has been running for 6 or 7 years....there is a reason he hasn't won yet...don't ya think??? I believe the American people will make the right decision in November....hopefully we will not be going back to the way it was when Bush in office...think people are smarter than that count on it!!! Good day everyone!!

I totally agree. I'll ask this question again. Do you Romney/Republican supporters really think they give a damn about you? Do you really think they have the best interests of America at heart? You are all so ready to blame Obama only because the people you so steadfastly stand behind do. You post the same things they say every day as if you thought of them on your own with no credible facts to back up the poison you spew. I, for one, do not want to live in a Republican dictatorship again and that's exactly what we'll get if Romney wins in addition to war with Russia and Syria. Think about it. Romney's policies are above and beyond sensible and not beneficial to the country.

Not true. In looking at facts and figures, the national debt increase is normal spending that has been in place even before Obama took office. So he is responsible for no increase.

The right wing is selling the big lie. Truth be told, tax cuts we couldn’t afford and two unfunded wars were a main cause.

And if you are silly enough to believe Romney or Ryan on their budget plan, in which more tax cuts and spending cuts are the answer, then you really are fools.

      Hi MountainLioness.

This independent believes Romney does not give a damn about me personally but does want my vote. But I could say the same for President Obama and most of Congress for that matter.

I do believe Romney may have a better sense of what to do from an economic standpoint, and that is what we need right now so desperately. The current President's policies are simply not working and he is a polarizing figure - we are treading water (actually slowly sinking) and 86 million have stopped looking for work. The beauty of this country is we can bring in changes of leadership if things are not working out.

I don't like when people call our leaders names, so childish. I respect the office of the Presidency but I am also weary of another Summer of Recovery. We have to have someone in there that knows how to kick start this nation back to greatness. It may not be Romney, but it is certainly not Obama.

If you can't be honest with yourself, how can anyone take what you have to say seriously?

Poor PresiDEBT Obama and his little band of worshippers. Is the going getting a little tough for you? Why isn't Obama running on his record, now that he actually has one? Oh, I know, it is because it sucks.

You can SAY PresiDEBT Obama saved GM and Chrysler, but why don't you tell the truth? The American TAXPAYER saved them. We are still on the hook for billions with GM. The GM stock price will have to MORE than double for us to recoup our money.

PresiDEBT Obama's record---Highest sustained unemployment rate since the Great Depression. The only credit downgrade in our nation's history. Lowest employment participation rate in over 30 years. Highest deficits in history. The largest and fastest growth in our national debt in history. Highest number of people recieving government aid.

And for God's sake people, let me try to give you a clue. Bush is NOT running, nor did he run LAST Presidential election. If you think stoking hatred for Bush is a good campaign strategy, that is wonderful news for the GOP. God knows PresiDEBT Obama can't run on HIS record.

      Vote ABO in 2012.

Neither Bush II or Obama met a bill they wanted to veto - both of them use terror to destroy our 4th Amendment - and both of them spend like Secret Service Agents at a Colombian Brothel. To this day - no one can name one major single policy difference between Obama and the Shrub

Mike. it is true that bush isnt running! It is also true that the damage he and the 2 prior GOP presidents did to this country will take generations to fix-- assuming there is no more GOP obstruction! Remember, the last 3 GOP presidents signed TWENTY deficit riddled budgets that added over $11T to the national debt AND saddled Pres. Obama with a $1.3T deficit before he even took office. That latter fact is THE REASON there have been $1.3T deficits under Obama. They dont just magically disappear!

And it was all deliberate--- adopting a strategy called "STARVE THE BEAST", where they used massive tax cuts and overspending to create a debt crisis.

Wow. Where were the Dems when all this evil-doing was going on? Standing idly by doing nothing? Or did Nancy and Harry add to the wild Bush spending by ratcheting it up even more. While Bush was FAR from a fiscal conservative, spending increased MORE under Bush when the Dems took Congress. Federal tax revenues had steadily increased under Bush during his first term, but so did spending. Doesn't sound like it was all Bush's fault, when only Congress can spend it.

WHen, if ever, will the Dems take ANY responsibility for ANYTHING? The Dems like to point out ALL the bad things that Bush did, but where were the DEMS? Why didn't they stop the GOP? And don't you dare say that they were the minority and were powerless. You don't get to blame the GOP when they are the minority and also let the Dems off the hook.

I guess the Dems are just useless while in the minority, completely powerless to stop any bad legislation or policy. Adn while in th emajority, the Dems can't pass any good legislation because the mean old GOP "obstructed" them. Sounds like the Dems are kind of useless in either role, and yet you continue to support and vote for those clowns. Nice job.

Tom--just answer the one question---Where were the Dems?

MIke ---- Why dont you go find out!! The FACT is that raygun/bush/bush DID sign all those budgets!! The FACT is that they DID have a plan "to starve the beast" whose purpose was to create a debt crisis and eliminate/privatize social spending. It WAS Grover Norquist's plan back in the late 70s, and he DID brag about it and does to this day. MOST of these budgets were passed using "reconciliation" which permitted no filibusters. My hunch is that the DEMS had no idea that a US political party would actually endanger the country's finances.

If you have a problem with the post, then contacts those who wrote the documentation!! If course, you can always try to refute what I posted, with the suitable documentation , of course!

One fact can NOT be denied.... the GOP did this, and they had a PLAN to do it! And they're almost there.

PS. in 16 of those budgets, the GOP controlled the Senate, or the House, or both! So, stop shooting the messenger and take a hard look at the message which is a matter of public record! And if you value you country, and your own future, you will NOT allow "starve the beast" to succeed.

I agree with most of what Jack Mack says above: Social Security fix - eliminate the 106,000 cap. The millionaires and billionaires don't need to collect so this will be considered their investment to maintain the schools, airports, highways, etc., to train and get the middle class to work for them. It would be deducted from their gross income thereby giving them a massive 'tax' break. By the way all their income should be taxed and it should be illegal to put it in offshore banks to avoid taxes..No more secret bank accounts. That would be a sure fire way to force them to invest in jobs in this country, not foreign banks.

Cut the military budget by 50%. Even I think Jack's cut from 800 billion to 200 billion it too much. I suggest that 50% of the current budget is wasted in the form of over billing, contracts not finished on time, planes that don't fly as projected, donating used equipment to police forces which is nothing more than militarizing the police. Some of them are already crazy enough without giving them more incentive to be bullies. We can think of better ways to recycle!

It may not be much of a difference whether we have Obama or Romney in the White House if we have a strong, honest Congress which calls for replacing over half of the current occupants especially the Tea Baggers. I think Obama would be less inclined to "compromise" with an honest Congress. Romney is so out of touch with ordinary people that he would be a total disaster. His rip-off of ordinary working people in his past should be enough to justify not voting for him.

Speaking of honest Congress, make it illegal to take an oath of office to represent the people of the United States and then turn around and sign a pledge to that fat, nasty looking Grover Norquist. Who the hell is that slob anyway? Signing a pledge to him or anyone like him, should be considered treason. Along that same line pass a law that says once you run for & elected to a seat in Congress you should never be allowed to become a lobbyist. And while on that subject, severly limit lobbying of Congress by companies, corporations, etc.

Reinstate laws that regulate the greedy, self-enriching banks.

Invest in solar and wind power. The hell with the greedy oil companies. They have increased the cost of gasoline from about 89 cents per gallong to over $4 per gallon. That should be enough to satisfy the most greedy among us but of course we know it is not.

Regulate, grow & process marajuana just like alcohol. That would put a huge dent in illegal drugs from Mexico and other locations south of us. It would also create thousands of jobs and might even eliminate that massive debt that has been run off the charts by illegal wars (occupations) of small countries that have never done us any harm. Recognize that 9-11 was a criminal act & should have been prosecuted as such. Yes, it was a massive loss of life but so has been Iraq, Afghanistan & other countries that we have stuck our noses into & tried to dictate their policies.

Those who lead us into illegal activities with a pile of lies should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law as murderers, thieves, etc. That action is definitely treason. Those people should be sentenced to life in prison without parole. All their assets should be seized to help offset some of the damage they have done to our country. Yes, a life in prison without parole & totally broke would be real justice that even they could understand.

Rescind that obscene law that requires the U.S. Postal service to set aside money to benefit employees who have not yet been born and instead work to maintain the post office as is. It is one of the very successful programs run by the government & provides a much needed service & jobs for the country. We do not need to privitize the post office or turn it's business over to the costly private services which are limited in their delivery services.

I'm sure there are many more ways to stop waste in this country that have nothing to do with these polls which benefit only a select few and often feed false information to us.

Completely agree with every point. Why aren't you running for election? You've got an excellent platform.

you do realize that SS benefits are tied in to what you contributed, right? If you increase the contributions, those people will collect much more when they retire. And surely you aren't suggesting that people who paid in shouldn't get their money back, right? I mean, you don't want someone else financing YOUR retirement, do you?

As far as Grover Norquist is concerned, many of us ACTUAL income tax payers feel we pay enough to a government that has proven themselves to be unwise. Why would giving them MORE money to waste be a good thing? Would you give a gallon of whiskey to an alcoholic?

                          #74.2 - Thu May 31, 2012 9:31 AM EDT

Actually, SS benefits are tied to what you earned in the last 5 quarters of your working career! Grover Norqust advocated tax cuts for the rich..... and overspending. which is EXACTLY how we got into the debt crisis. It was intentional, so the GOP could eliminate SS and Medicare etc. even tho neither contibuted ONE DIME to the deficits or debt

That is the stuff of treason!

Just curious.... why is the right so hateful? And what is there to hate about Obama? I think he's done a tremendous job considering the fact that the Republicans have filibustered everything he's wanted to do. They have declared war on him from the start without even thinking about the consequences to their constituents and the country at large. For once, we have an intelligent, thoughtful leader who does not have a knee jerk reaction to volatile situations.

If the Republicans get their way, and they just might, our country will be in for a real eye opener as to who the real enemies of our country are.

Ever occur to anyone that the Dems took a shellacking in the midterms for a REASON? Like maybe enough of us wanted to put the brakes on the Dems agenda? So maybe the GOP is doing exactly what their constituents VOTED them in for!

Obama entered office with a paper thin resume and that has be very evident these lat years. His polices have deserved the effort to be blocked. We have no interest in being more like Europe. Romney 2012

Romney can certainly defeat the recovery, increase joblessness, and reopen the corruption floodgate for Wall Street. Depression trumps recession and wiping out the middle class will end class warfare on the poor 1%. Billionaires know how to run a country. Just look at Saudi Arabia if you have doubts.
