Obama calls Romney to offer congratulations

Updated 12:20 p.m. - President Obama called Mitt Romney on Wednesday to congratulate the former Massachusetts governor on winning the necessary delegates to secure the Republican presidential nomination.

The Obama campaign released a short readout of the call, which occurred at 11:30 a.m. ET on Wednesday.

"President Obama said that he looked forward to an important and healthy debate about America’s future, and wished Governor Romney and his family well throughout the upcoming campaign," said an Obama campaign statement emailed to reporters by spokesman Ben LaBolt.

"It was brief and cordial," said a Romney campaign aide. "Gov. Romney thanked the president for his congratulations and wished him and his family well."

Romney, per NBC News projections, surpassed the necessary 1,144 delegates he needs to clinch the nomination after winning last night's Texas primary.

Neither Obama nor Romney has any public campaign events on the schedule today.

You sound just like an idiot. Didn't all the former presidents use the jet, have parties and took vacations? I swear bigots are always saying things that make no sense what so ever. And now that you have made this wise discovery, what's your point.

I will vote for and support monetarily the candidate(s) that want the Supreme Court changed so that rulings that allow corporations and monied interests to control our elections are never allowed to happen again. There must be a way to rid ourselves of people who want those with money to get special and better access to those things we are all entitled to.

unlike the racists, rude, irreverent, ill-mannered republicans.

      DemElizabeth -

I am a republican, but allow me to disagree with you on one little thing, and demonstrate your error here.

Despite the fact that you were both rude and ill mannered in your comment about republicans, I will reply in the same way that a person with some class would respond to you.

I revere the office of President, including its current occupant, and wish him (President Obama) nothing but the greatest success possible in helping our country recover - so much for me being irreverent.

You will no doubt assume that I am a racist as I self identify as a republican, but I assure you that I do not care in any way about the race or religion of the sitting president, whatever those happen to be.

I do hope that you do not consider this to be rude or ill mannered, but I would ask of you that you do not lump all republicans into one monolithic group, any more than I lump all democrats into one group.

Generalisations of that type do nothing but hinder actual thought, and in the end accomplish very little.

      Have a good evening, ma'am.

Our President was very nice to have extended his hand in congratulations. I am sure Willard will now stop all the swift boat ads headed toward the president in the coming months, that he totally disagrees with publicly, while rubbing his hands together and dancing with his rats behind closed doors privately.

Politics is for the rich. You will never see an average middle class man/woman occupying any high level political office. Too bad, having a lot of money doesn't necessarily mean you are qualified to hold a position with as much responsibility as a Senator, Congressmen and President.

In addition to my comment on your previous post about how false everything you're saying is, Romney isn't even a bishop anymore. In the Mormon church, a bishop is a 5-year, volunteer-basis callling to preside over one congregation of a few hundred people. Once you're released, you have no more leadership or authority than someone who was never a bishop in the first place.

(Also, Mormons use the KJV all the time, they haven't practiced polygamy since 1898, the only abuse has been in splinter groups that the Mormon church has consistently condemned and excommunicates you for joining, Mormons believe Jesus is their Savior, so they don't want to "fire" him, you need to stop reposting the same fearmongering comment multiple times, etc.)

All this single-minded, left versus right, ideological one dimensional bull has got to go! This is the problem with our country. It shouldn't be about Democrats or Republicans! It should be about Americans, especially our elected officials, doing the right thing for our country and it's citizens.

I consider myself an independent voter, but going back to the Reagan days and with the only exception having been Perot, I’ve always voted Republican. We need whoever wins the next election to Start Protecting American Jobs and do whatever it takes to bring back the jobs they let go. They should've given us somebody who would stand up for the American people.

Both parties have sold out the bulk of the American citizens, who they're supposed to represent, by allowing the "out-sourcing" floodgates to open wider and wider without taking any sensible measures to stem the tide. Our leaders are elected by the Citizens of the United States of America to represent the interests of those citizens and the country itself. They are NOT elected by the Global Market Place or foreign citizens!

We need to bring manufacturing back to the United States of America and both parties are ignoring tariffs as a way to level the playing field, raise money and bring jobs back home. Let's guess why. Oh that's right, tariff is a dirty word. Hum, maybe it’s that our so called leaders (political leaders) are beholden to the same people who are exporting our jobs.

I guess we should keep letting Corp Boards, Wall Street, CEOs and Foreign Lobbyists promote sending US jobs to countries where they work for slave wages, no benefits, no OSHA safety standards or no real environment regulations. How's that been working for us?

The so called “Global Market Place” is not a level playing field. Companies may have made higher profits by "out sourcing", but they've been putting middle class Americans who are a good part of the world’s customer base out of work. I’m not a lefty or member of any union. I run a business that employs over 20 people and produces products that are purchased by customers that do manufacturing and packaging. I’m just an average Joe, but I've been saying this for more than 10 years now. If I can see it, so can our so called leaders (political leaders) who are beholden to the same people who are exporting our jobs.

We need to add tariffs that are proportionate to the inequities in wages and regulations in the country where the goods were produced and or where we’re importing them from. We could then use the money raised by these tariffs to help companies build state of the art manufacturing plants here in the USA, which would create more jobs here at home for US citizens, which would then in turn increase our income tax revenue.

Bringing manufacturing back to the US not only gives jobs to the US citizens who would be working in those manufacturing facilities, but to the people that would be working in the businesses that would spring up all around them. This should also include the safe harvesting, production and distribution of our own natural energy here in the USA, rather than paying for fuel from countries where they hate us. Let’s keep that money and those jobs here in the US.

These so-called “free trade agreements” have to go. It was obvious when they were passing these agreements as to what was going to happen and sure enough it did. Our leaders had to have known this as well when they were passing these bills. It’s just common sense.

The “Global Market Place” is not a level playing field! The whole idea of the tariffs is so we can pay our factory workers a decent wage and not be blown out by these other countries where they don’t play by the same rules.

We may have to pay a bit more for products made here in the USA by US citizens, but at least we'll still have jobs and a future for our children.

The bottom line is that “Our Government” has to protect American industry and the jobs that those industries provide. If they do that, the rest will take care of itself.

(Under Clinton jobs to China, Under Bush I & II jobs to Mexico/NAFTA and huge influx of illegals or cheap easily abused labor into the US driving down wages, taking jobs, driving up healthcare, scamming our tax system, etc) Our leaders are elected by the Citizens of the United States of America to represent the interests of those citizens and the country itself. Great Post. Wish it were possible, but don't have much faith in the American people anymore. We seem to have totally lost our moral fabric and are willing to sell our lives, security, future, prosperity and hopes to deceitful, self serving politicians who offer the Most Promising "Goodies". Our Economic, Social, Educational , Racial and Ethical pursuits as a Nation are dwindling to nothing. And what do we do??? Elect a self-proclaimed Socialist who has attempted to redistribute both public and private wealth of this Nation using dictatorial moves at every opportunity in conflict with both our Constitution and our Legislative Branch of government. MOST AMERICANS would not allow his associates and friends and cohorts into their living rooms due to their despicable deeds and actions. Yet there is a question as to whether this man will be re-elected??? Due to the voting constituents attracted to him...perhaps. Hopefully NOT!!

RESTORE: I do believe it was Clinton who opened the Border Floodgates to illegals from Mexico and SIGNED ON TO NAFTA, against all warnings from Ross Perot and the U.S. Trade Unions.

                      Restore -

Your passion is obvious, and congratulations on your success.

I agree that our politicians were not elected by a global marketplace or foreign citizens.

But, as a business owner, do you not see that making a profit is the reason that a business exists, and that if it does not, then it soon ceases to exist? Do you not see that cutting costs is a current business model that works well for the companies, that then provide the jobs that we so desperately need, via the growth of the company in question?

Do you not see that outsourcing jobs, particularly by large companies, is a result of the imperative to make more money for the companies by cutting a cost that can obviously be cut?

You call for tariffs to "level the playing feild". Dont you see that if that happens, we rapidly invite similarly high tariffs from other countries, only increasing the problem of trade inequality, rather than fixing it?

You say that we might have to pay more for domestic products in that scenario, but do you understand that if we lose foreign markets, a lot of people would lose their jobs, making them unable to even pay current prices?

You obviously want manufacturing jobs brought back this country - a laudable goal. The unfortunate, or if I can steal a phrase here, inconvenient, truth is this - that is entirely unrealistic. The simple truth is this - labor costs in this country are very high, and until that changes, companies will outsource in order to save money on those costs. Add to that the reality that manufacturing jobs are nowhere near as prevalent as they used to be, and I am sure that you can see the problem.

So, tariffs is not a dirty word to republicans - it is simple business logic. The very same logic that does in fact create jobs - not trickle down, just logic. Not some shadowy leaders that our politicians are "beholden" to, just trying to preserve their companies.

Again, I say, as a business man yourself, this should all be fairly evident to you.

The people with all of the excuses as to why we can’t or aren’t willing to manufacture products here in the US are the same people who have provided us with the thinking that’s gotten us into this mess in the first place.

Over the past 15-20 years, I've seen too many of our customer's close manufacturing plants here in the USA and move those plants to different countries and decimating entire areas here in OUR COUNTRY. And I'm not alone. I don't have a problem if they move to a cheaper area within OUR COUNTRY and hiring AMERICAN CITIZENS, because they'll still be providing jobs to Americans who will then in turn provide income tax revenue to OUR Government versus our government having to pay unemployment benefits to those who would be jobless instead.

It's obvious that the foreign interests are influencing our media as well, just watch the ABC Nightline special on Apple’s iPhone and iPad products being made in China that ends with the biased comment “That you can be the nation that lines up to make these products or the nation the lines up to buy them, but it’s impossible to be both”. The people with all of the excuses as to why we can’t or aren’t willing to manufacture products here in the US are the same people who have provided us with the thinking that’s gotten us into this mess in the first place.

Over the past 15-20 years, I've seen too many of our customer's close manufacturing plants here in the USA and move those plants to different countries, decimating entire areas here in OUR COUNTRY. And I'm not alone. I don't have a problem if they move to a cheaper area within OUR COUNTRY and hire AMERICAN CITIZENS, because they'll still be providing jobs to Americans who will then in turn provide income tax revenue to OUR Government versus our government having to pay unemployment benefits to those who would be jobless instead.

What bull crap propaganda! ABC has direct ties to Apple and Foxconn.

Bringing manufacturing back to the United States of America not only gives jobs to the US citizens who would be working in those manufacturing facilities, but to the people that would be working in the businesses that would spring up all around them. The “Global Market Place” is not a level playing field! The whole idea of the tariffs is so we can pay our factory workers a decent wage and not be blown out by these other countries where they don’t play by the same rules.

I'm sorry, but America does not want a Muslim trader running its country.

                            Good- bye Osama.

A lot of the groundwork for taking out Osama bin Laden was laid during the previous 8 years. You can't really expect me to believe that if the Obama administration had to start from scratch on intelligence for the location of Osama, they still would have taken only 36 months. Come on.

If you honestly believe that Bush was such a good President and Obama was such a bad President, then I would expect you to believe most anything!

Jackie: If Bush had all this groundwork, why is it that he didn't take out Bin Laden himself? He may have "laid the groundwork," but he failed to follow through.....the mission was NOT accomplished.

Because it would have taken that long to get the intelligence no matter who was in office. Your statement that he "failed to follow through" would make sense if there had been instances where he COULD have taken out Bin Laden, but decided to not make the call. But that's not what happened - he simply didn't get the opportunity, because although he was working towards it, it just took longer than his term in office.

Don't get me wrong - I'm not a Bush fan. I just happen to think that the President has less influence over the whole Osama thing than most people seem to think. I doubt the CIA was working any more or less hard under Bush vs Obama. They just happened to accomplish it while Obama was in office, so people give him the credit.

President Obama called Mitt Romney on Wednesday to congratulate the former Massachusetts governor

Good to see them getting along. Obama can help the Romney family pick out new drapes in January.

I'm glad that Mr. Obama is in the congratulating mood. He will be doing it more and more over the next several months. I can not wait until he congratulates President Romney on inauguration day !!!

I never thought of Mitt Romney as a sanitation engineer, but he will be taking out that Chicago trash and cleansing our White House. We should be discussing President Romney's agenda for the first of his eight glorius years as our beloved leader.

Eventually it will be considered an insult to even be called a Democrat. Like calling someone a n****r or an idiot. Just bad manners to even mention that "party" anymore. Still have a two party system though. Republicans and Conservatives. LOL

The Rs in Washington don't seem to represent the people much anymore. I know actual Republicans in my city and not one of them resembles the bunch of clowns you see in Washington. Most of the folks I know are sane, rational, reasonable people - I don't know how they can look at Trump and Romney and think their ideas are being represented.

I think I disagree. Mittens should be able to debate against himself. After all, he sits on both sides of most issues. I just cannot imagine being a Mitt; not knowing who you are or what you stand for.

I would agree that it shows class to make the phone call. When the transcript is released to the media to show how classy someone is it it becomes another vehicle to campaign.

Right up there with authoring a book on Gardening and being featured on every media outlet to talk about gardening????
