The guarantee is also notable because Romney has repeatedly claimed President Obama broke a promise to hold the jobless rate under 8 percent. Romney’s 6 percent promise bears the appearance of bold one-upsmanship.”
“Mitt Romney on Wednesday proposed a significant restructuring of the American education system, one that would revamp the funding formulas, encourage more charter schools, and revive the debate over how poor and disabled students choose the schools they attend,” the Boston Globe writes.
Reuters: “Romney said millions of American children are getting a ‘third-world education,’ and offered proposals that he said would reward teachers for their results instead of their seniority. And he would give parents greater choice of where to send their children to school and take other steps to reduce the influence of powerful teachers’ unions.”
The AP: “Despite his criticism of Obama, the president has embraced some reforms that started as Republican ideas, according to Michael Petrilli, executive vice president at the Thomas B. Fordham Institute, a Washington-based think tank. Through their ‘Race to the Top’ competition, for example, they have encouraged states to lift caps on the number of charter schools, a policy that Romney supports as well. ‘It doesn't leave a lot of room for Mitt Romney to draw contrast with President Obama,’ Petrilli said. The Obama campaign responded by releasing comments from a series of Republicans — high-profile Romney supporters Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell and Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels, among them — praising Obama's education policies.”
Colin Powell yesterday took shots at Mitt Romney on foreign policy. In 2008, Romney said he’d pick Joe the Plumber over Powell.

Romney "managed" to decrease unemployment in Mass by 0.9% and that was thanks to the almost non-estining growth of the <65 demographic. And that was pre-Financial Meltown time when things were still good.

He would try to accomplish this by giving the middle class a 250 buck tax break and giving the wealthy 200 grand. He would use austerity and try to make things better by laying off another half million public service jobs and therefor killing the tax base. He would let financial institutions and corporations to throw other people's money away in risky investments. He'd start another war or two to throw the "defence" contractors tens of billions. Instead of sending our kids to school he'd send them to war again. It's the same old republican bs that didn't work for 30 years and wouldn't work again.
It's a good thing that Romney will never be president.

Romney would help poor school districts by underfunding them and then hiring for profit corporations to take them over. In such districts, 40% of the tax money goes to management which leave 60% for the kids. Programs that work like Head Start would go extinct, and classroom size would grow.
Romney would rather send our kids to war than to school.

Colin Powell's main objective is what's best for this country. Powell may have a different vision than me of how to get there but nonetheless, I respect the man. It does not surprise me that Romney would prefer someone like Joe the Plumber who is neither a Joe or a plumber.

I like Powell, but why does he want to hear what ideas the republicans have before he makes a presidential endorsement? They have had the same middle class killing ideas for the past 30 years.

Palm Springs - I totally agree with most of what you have to say, but I would much prefer you use "unplanned" rather than "un-wanted" children. From my way of thinking, there's a big difference.
I worked with a lady who had one of those unplanned pregnancies and believe me there were times when her son felt unwanted, unloved and unimportant.

The WSJ already postured that economists have predicted that unemployment will be at 6% in 2014 at the current rate no matter who is President. Since Mitt has already stated during the Primary season that 6% would still be considered a FAILURE for President Obama then how come it isn't a FAILURE for his lying a$$!!!

It looks like the office "yes man" is running for president. Those of us that work in offices know this guy, that never has any original ideas and rides the coattails of others to success. If the idea works, they say they were for it all along, but if it fails they will be hiding in their office trying to look busy.

Romney said President Obama had to have unemployment down to 4%...so why is Romney's goal 2% higher?
CBO says if we stay on this track unemployment should be down to 6% in 4 years....but shsssss...Romney doesn't want you to know that.
I think President Obama taking over in the midst of the meltdown, stopping the bleeding and bringing the rate down from 10% to 8% is more impressive than Willard's plan to bring the rate down to 6% in a stable but still weak economy. Maybe reading between the lines, Willard is admitting the best he can hope for is to do what Obama is doing and that he has no fresh ideas on how to bring the rate down. Besides, it's not the goverment's job to create jobs right righties?
Thats a bold prediction. If he gets it below double digits that would be good news for the country.

The CBO forecasts that unemployment will drop to 6% by 2016 if current policies are continued. Does that not mean that Mitt the Barber is endorsing President Obama's policies?
Anyone can forecast anything. that means nothing. If O is still in charge unemployment will be over 30%. Thats a low forecast from me.

The real story is that Romney is admitting to the "new normal," that we cannot get to what used to be considered full employment. AND he's lowering UE by 2 percentage points in 4 years - that's now different that what he blames Obama for doing in 3.5 (but really even less because the recession had to peak first).

My neighbors are teachers at a charter school in Minnesota. They own two homes, one for the school year and one for spring/summer breaks. They own a boat in both states.
If you want to see prices skyrocket, pay $100K per teacher at these charter schools.

"Third World" education?! The man has no shame. This country has not committed to the education of our children in decades. We have seen endless gutting of programs and personnel by whatever party is in power in whatever state (think Wisconsin as a recent example). But the Republican administrations in my lifetime (longer than I want to think about) have been the most shameless about it.
Charter schools are not the answer. Studies (see attached) have shown that, all other things being equal (location, staff, money), charter schools produce no better outcomes than public schools. Charter schools are just private schools that use public money. And in my part of the country, private schools have agendas, be it religion or some other more insidious agenda (think segregation). Do the charter schools have agendas as well? If the things that truly make them better are that they are free of bureaucracy and regulations, then why not give all schools those benefits?
Education should be the most important priority in this country. Seriously, more important than anything else. It is where we should be putting all our effort and money. Nothing else will affect the future more. Nothing else will secure the country.

Mr. Romney has told us he will do exactly what the Republicans are doing in Wisconsin (Scott Walker) go after the unions. He wants to privitize public education and make sure he and his wall stareet buddies make lots of money from our tax payer dollars via charter schools. It would be easy to get things done in Congress, especially since the GOP will tell Mr. Romney what to do and what to sign-- and being the puppet that Mr. Romney is, he will do it!
I am so shocked that this country is willing to go back to the Bush era on steroids and vote Mr. Romney for President.

Unemployment has been dropping steadily for two and a half years, and will continue to drop. Of coarse it will reach 6%. Obama is building an economy to last.
