Democrats enjoy a slight advantage over their Republican challengers in three key Senate races in Ohio, Florida and Virginia, according to three new NBC-Marist polls released Thursday.
Democrats lead by varying margins in a series of contests that could determine whether Republicans are able to achieve the net-gain of four seats they need to retake control of the Senate if President Barack Obama wins re-election; they need to pick up just three seats if the Democratic incumbent loses.
A separate poll shows a virtually tied race in a fourth state, Massachusetts, that the GOP is battling to hold in November.
Obama edges Romney in 3 key battleground states
In Ohio, Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown leads his Republican opponent, state Treasurer Josh Mandel, by a 14-point margin among registered voters. Fifty-one percent of registered voters said they would re-elect Brown if the election were held today, versus 37 percent who would choose Mandel; 12 percent were undecided.
In Virginia, former governor and Democratic National Committee Chairman Tim Kaine leads former Republican Sen. George Allen, 49 percent to 43 percent, among registered voters.
The Daily Rundown's Chuck Todd reports on polls in three states – Florida, Virginia and Ohio where President Barack Obama has a slight lead.
And in Florida, 46 percent of registered voters prefer Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson to 42 percent who said they would vote for Republican Rep. Connie Mack.

The Florida, Ohio, and Virginia polls were conducted by Marist for NBC News between May 17-20. Each sample of registered voters has a 3 percent margin of error.
Democrats are tasked with defending 23 seats in this year's elections, many of which were won in 2006 in swing or Republican-leaning states. The three states in the NBC-Marist polls are also battleground states in the presidential election, and are expected to be heavily contested by both the Obama and Mitt Romney campaigns.
First Thoughts: Economic pessimism returns
Republicans argue that the variety of states where Democrats must play defense gives the GOP a number of paths toward capturing the majority, but the GOP's once-heady prospects for winning the upper chamber have been tempered by recruiting flameouts and some degree of Democratic resurgence.
The tightening battle for control of the Senate has also raised the pressure on Republicans to defend each of the seats they currently possess. For that reason, there's arguably no more highly-scrutinized Senate race than the one in Massachusetts, where Republican Scott Brown is working to hold onto his seat in a deeply-Democratic state.
A Suffolk University poll released late Wednesday night showed Brown's battle against Democratic challenger Elizabeth Warren, a favorite candidate of liberal activists, locked in a virtual tie.
Forty-eight percent of likely voters would elect Brown, who first won office in a Jan. 2010 special election to fill the seat of the late Democratic Sen. Edward Kennedy, to a full term. Forty-seven percent of Massachusetts voters said they would send Warren, a former Wall Street watchdog, to the Senate.
That race has been particularly hard-fought, involving most recently a controversy involving instances in Warren's career when she listed herself as having Native American heritage. But the Suffolk poll found that most voters in the Bay State didn't view the controversy as a significant story; likewise, Suffolk's numbers found that they didn't view a vote for Brown as akin to a vote for Wall Street.
The Suffolk poll, conducted between May 20-22, has a 4 percent margin of error.

Each Marist poll cited is a registered voter poll. These polls are meaningless in that they don't weight for the likelihood that a registered voter (most do not) will vote. Likely voter surveys on the other hand are showing strong signs of enough GOP pickups to take control. Intrade currently has the Dems at only a 1 in 4 chance of retaining control of the Senate. The Dems have slightly better odds, 3 in 10, to regain control of the House. Obviously, there best chance, at 57%, is that the incumbent, Obama, will retain the presidency but there are many uncertainties like the European monetary issues that could quickly knock Obama down.
If Obama is re-elected Im going to retire and pay no more taxes.. screw him and the occupy wall streeters. Oh and the friggin unions.. beggars all.

How is this possible? Liberals in the Senate have not passed a budget in almost 4 years. They passed Ocare in defiance of the will of the people. Why would there even be a contest? The one thing that these 'polls' ALWAYS fail to mention: they're not as accurate if you're polling registered voters. Polling LIKELY voters will give you a far more accurate picture.
It also depends upon your definition of "likely."

"Likely voters", those that cast votes in the last three elections have Obama down 43-46. That in of itself isn't too bad but that leaves 11% uncommitted and in every election since 1964 the uncommitted vote has gone AGAINST the incumbent so....when all of these wishfully thinking Obama fans look at the polls they see "victory" while the rest of the world sees a crushing defeat for Democrats in the House, Senate and the Presidency.

It seems to me that conservative economic polies have failed and liberal social policies have failed and yet neither side wants to own up to it. I find that hard to believe. Conservatives certainly don't mind lowering taxes and fighting two wars at the same time they are deregulating the financial markets. Liberals don't want to spend time fixing the policies they believe in.
They actually believe in something? I thought they were all like the plants in my landscape....out there consuming what give them without the ability to think, speak, form a coherent thought or produce anything at all.

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Thursday shows President Obama earning 45% of the vote and Mitt Romney attracting 44% support. Six percent (6%) would vote for a third party candidate, while another five percent (5%) are undecided
It's going to come down to ABO..."anybody but obozo." We'll be kicking this clown and his big top circus act to the curb in Nov. The only "poll" I want to see is the main tent pole coming down from the Whitehouse.
Maybe a little less flipflopping on Mitt's part and he might do better in those battleground states...

Obama won the election because he said he would not be the typical politician. No more shadiness, backroom deals, bribery, finger-pointing, touting to lobbiests, and the dreaded Washington status quo. The reason his numbers are down and is VERY likely to lose his re-election is because nothing has changed. Same old thing still going on. The Change campaign slogan may come back to blowup in his face. Independents will be the deciding factor again as it was 4 years ago.
Mandel lied to Ohio voters when he said he would serve out his full four year term. Eighty-seven days later he publicized his bid for the Senate. In less than two months he changed his mind? For the benefit of Ohioans?? Not hardly. Just another lying politician.
When will American citizens wake up and see that all the fighting between the Dems and Reps are as about as rediculous as a Jerry Springer show. Pointing fingers at each other when they both endorse the same military industrial complex and corporate banking system that has bankrupted our country while destroying any chance for real change that would restore our constitution and earn them any respect.
Time we had a government that spent it's time governing, instead of fighting over profits for corporate interests and illegal immoral wars.

We need to unite and reform our government who appears to be out of control, when in fact, they are in control..just not our control.

I tell you what I would have like to see a Ron Paul or John Huntsman match-up to againist the President then Mitt!!! That way we would have a vote up or down or principle (meaning the role of government and can it work for the good of the people or it can't be trusted) rather then the President who think we can have good government and a two-faced sellout like Mr. Romney who rather train people fron India and Israel for 1.25 million engineering jobs instead of his fellow unemplyed or undermeployed American citizens.
I agree. The reality of our current situation is that when you are forced to vote again, for just another lesser of two evils, as is the Obama verses Romney ballot, anyone who is a true patriot knows that it is still voting for evil.
It leaves many people feeling like their vote is wasted and unheard to write in an alternative, or leads them to not vote at all. Just as the Reps and Dems real leaders planned. Pretty tricky huh?
Nobody stands a chance against the tag teaming of Dems and Reps in politics with their stranglehold on mainstream media that has helped convince people that there is only two choices, when in fact, they are playing for the same team and we have no real choice at all.
