Rubio decries unfinished business in speech to Latinos

WASHINGTON -- Florida Sen. Marco Rubio on Wednesday asserted that none of the major issues facing the United States have been solved during Barack Obama's presidency.

"This nation and this political process has not solved one single major issue in the last three and a half to four years. In fact, it’s been incapable of even passing a budget," said Rubio in a speech here to the Latino Coalition Economic Summit. "The single largest organization in the world -- a $3.8 trillion endeavor called the United States government -- has not had a budget in almost four years."

The potential vice presidential pick has gone on the attack against the president recently. During a high-profile GOP fundraiser in South Carolina over the weekend, he called Obama the most divisive figure in modern American politics.  Though today he did not use the president's name, he delivered a toned-down version of that same message in front of a bloc of voters, Latinos, that will be key in the November election.

But Rubio's harshest rhetoric was aimed at the body he is a member of, the Senate. He even acknowledged that, despite taking office with high hopes, nothing has changed since he entered the high chamber.

“I ran because I was frustrated by the political process. Nothing has happened over the last year and a half to change that frustration, unfortunately," he said. "Too often times, in the United States Senate especially, most of the votes we take are nothing but messaging points. Bills are brought to the floor by people and they’re not going pass...The only thing that’s being done in the Senate these days is creating material for television commercials in the fall. And it's sad."

Earlier in the afternoon it was presumptive nominee Mitt Romney who addressed the group, delivering a speech promoting education reform.

Rubio applauded the former Massachusetts governor's plans for reform, saying: "There will be no new jobs in the 21st century for people who do not have advanced education of some form. We have to provide access to that as well as affordability.  And I'm glad that the nominee of my party has taken the lead in that regard."

It is of little surprise why Republican politicians are paying such close attention to Hispanic voters in 2012. A new national NBC News/Wall Street Journal/Telemundo poll showed Obama with a 34-point lead over Romney among Latino voters.

It is a big reason why the junior senator from Florida has generated so much buzz about joining the presidential ticket. But a Quinnipiac poll released today shows that Rubio adds only two points to Romney's showing in the Sunshine State.

Though Rubio did open his speech in Spanish, little else was specifically tailored for the Latino audience. Much of his speech was focused on the broken ways of Washington and examples of what he believes are missed opportunities for job creation -- like building the Keystone Pipeline.

'These are the kinds of things that historians write about 100 years from now when they discuss the decline of a civilization of a nation -- ridiculous decisions that were made because of politics, not because of policy," he said.

Because people are sick & tired of being pandered to by the GNOP!

Not to mention, as time goes by, Marco is compiling enough baggage to sink an inner-tube!

Oh, and, where's Marco's version of the Dream Act he's been hollaring about?

Well, Ol Joe (the non-plumber) feels that he and any other 'blue collar' person is just as qualified, to be President, as those who support 'elitism' (Harvard/Yale) grads...

The non-plumber supports Pizza Mans 999 tax plan...and kinda thinks that local plumbing unions are OK (he says he's got family members).....just not at the fed level.

Too funny....don't know about Al's toilet, but I betcha the non-plumber couldn't fix it.

Liar, liar, pants on fire. Sorry, Marco, but that's you and everytime you or one of your phony fiscal responsibility cronies makes that claim and I hear it, I will call you the liar you are. That goes for Paul Ryan, too, and Mitt Romney who lies so often, the press hits Google and does instant fact checking.

Despite the Party of No, despite the GOPTP's efforts to block, obstruct, delay and deny all things President Obama proposed beginning, all things democrats tried to do; despite the times President Obama reached out to the GOPTP in an effort to compromise, President Obama has turned the disastrous Bush/GOP economic collapse and near depression around. Marco and his band of merry obstructionists now play the game of "let's pretend" and ignore that it was their party, the GOP, which created the mess and did NOTHING to fix it. Then they point at President Obama and say, see, see, it's his fault. Anyone who votes for republicans and Mitt Romney is voting for a repeat performance of 2001-2008. I'd say 3 tries at trickle down is 2 tries too many.

Chilled, Joe the Plumber was on Lawrence O sometime ago, when he announced he was running for Congress. The plumber was very polite but Lawrence pointed out how bad 9-9-9 tax plan was and recommended he study up to learn how it impacts the lower and middle class--poor Joe looked blank.

If Rubio honestly believes that historians are going to look back in a 100 years, and claim the decline of America was caused by a delay in building the Keystone Pipeline, he is not smart enough to be in politics. What they will invariably point to as a decline will be the Bush presidency, the massive failures of Tea Party to compromise politically, and Obstructionist politics employed by both the GOP/TP.

Rubio is a good fit for Romney as they both hold such strong beliefs like a flag changes with the changing direction of the wind.

Rubio believed that when his parents were living out their lives in dignity due to social security and medicare he thought the programs should be strengthened in such a beautiful speech. But now he has evolved and thinks we are weak as a nation to provide that for other people's parents.

Why is evolving for a republican mostly to a more heartless and empty place?

"The single largest organization in the world -- a $3.8 trillion endeavor called the United States government -- has not had a budget in almost four years."

And since the Republican House DID pass a Budget the last two years, the failure is directly at the office of Harry Reid who has not even tried to pass a Budget - even when the Democrats controlled the House, Senate AND the Presidency for Obama's first two years.

And then Reid has the nerve to say that it's the Republicans that are doing nothing - even though they have passed about 30 bills that might create jobs - but Reid is sitting on them and refuses to even allow them to be debated.

Rubio knows this but will continue to carry his masters water. Completely dysfuctional and phony. Nothing rightous remains of the party and it is due to the leadership letting big business dictate to them while taking bribes. History simply repeating itself. Obama has proven his leadership. Actually, independentjim, that's not true. The Republicans do, indeed, say NO to the ongoing stupidity of this administration. That's why they were elected .... to stop the nonsense of Obama and restore the balance of power.

Republicans voted with the President on the new law to stop insider trading by our elected officials .... something that apparently was not previously considered illegal.

Maybe they could get together on a reasonable plan for term limits ..... but I am sure that would have to include a "grandfather clause" so that professional politicians like Charlie Rangel can continue to take advantage of his "perks".

I love to see you guys pretend that the republicans didn't take a thriving economy with surpluses that were expected to pay off our entire debt by 2010 to by 2008 had created the largest deficit in the history of our country.

Then you want to pretend like bush and the republicans didn't do this and blame it all on President Obama.

I mean it has been almost 4 years and how can we still blame bush for the recession his policies threw our country in? And just because the republicans have blocked any of President Obama's policies that would make our recovery faster, we can't blame the republicans for that either.

I am so sick of the republicans party being the party of more hate than brains. There use to be smart republicans who loved our country and were willing to compromise to do for our country rather than play infantile power games.

Neither fringe got what they wanted and our country ran pretty well. But now the 20% of our population that thinks that we should not have abortions for any reason thinks and is supported by the republican party that they should have the right to control all the women in the United States with their fringe beliefs.

The republicans have already outlawed abortions in Mississippi and if you elect a republican for anything your state is next.

Big differance between having a captain of a ship who has only 2 years experance and a first offcer that has had 2 years. Obamas lack of experance is proving itself everyday. So far the only thing he is good at is running for president. Something he has been constantly doing for the past three and a half years. And lets not even get into Biden's qualities. Now their is a ticket to be proud of, NOT. The only change to abortions are they are no longer paid for by the state. Like everything else they should be paid for by the persons using the service. If a person had to pay for it themselves maybe they wouldn't have so many. But like everything if it is free then people tend to abuse it. There never was a surplus, The Dot Com bubble destroyed this long ago, because it was a future projection that never happened. The democrats made it worse with the Housing Regulation they passed causing the housing/banks down fall in 08, so it was Congress not the president, but the bresident always gets the blame (except for Obama).

Rubio is no help with the hispanic vote. The vast majority of hispanics in this country are from Mexico and Central America. They are basically economic refugees who came here and had to suffer through the terrible immigration process we have in this country. They don't relate well to Cubans, whom they see as having had a different experience in getting here, almost a privileged acceptance as refugees from Castro. He might help in Florida, but that's already a red state.

All Republicans are claiming that they successfully stopped the president from doing anything to improve the economy. They did, however, fail to block private enterprise and the recovery of the financial markets to record highs, the return of the stock market to levels not seen under Bush, 26 straight months of job growth in the outsourced, consumer stagnated, workforce, and trade increases internationally.

Republicans announced their primary intention was to make Obama fail. We have seen their MISSION ACCOMPLISHED banner before.

      AffinityGW,

You just provided the answer to your own post. The stock market has improved because the elections of November, 2010 successfully "neutered" Obama politically so that he was unable to inflict more harm. Hell, if November, 2010 had not happened, the Dems would have rammed through "Cap and Trade" (a.k.a. Cap and Tax) which would have raised the costs of energy here in the U.S. for everyone ..... businesses and individuals.

The results of November, 2010 happened for a very clear reason. Obama was hell-bent on ramming through his ego-driven "Obamacare" at all costs to those who supported this hor$e$hit legislation. Obamacare puts government bureaucracy and inefficiency in charge of a private sector function.

i like how building the pipeline is so important and it will create so many jobs and blah blah blah. but rebuilding bridges and fixing highways and schools thats evil government spending. ill call bs on the whole job creating crap. its about the top having easier ways to make money. thats all the pipeline is. most of the oil that travels through it will NOT stay in this country. the only reason the want to bring it thru here is because canadians voted it down because its dirty to ship and dirty to refine. you dont hear them mentioning that tho.

the pipeline is bogus. A shiny object that the media can focus on and do the "correct" thing and state per Romney the pipeline will create 16,000 jobs and per Obama its an ecological disaster. But the confcept of the media being the truthteller- naw it might effect our commercial stream of income.

One is prvate money and the other is my money. I'd like to keep more of mine. And I can if the private money is spent. Less people will be on unemployment, more tax $ will be raised, US will be less dependent on ME oil (lowering the cost of fuel?). That's the difference that y'all don't see.

Do they think people won't associate the problems today with their stubbornness to help when we had a decent chance at correcting the devastation left by Bush on this country and the world. That Axis of Evil is a Tag will forever be tied to Republicans/Conservatives. Took them 8 years to set mankind back a century and they want another shot? GET REAL.

No waistful spending, No bloted government, No to forcing people to join Unions. No to Higher Taxes, No to buying friends overseas, We need to go back in time when the Constitution was followed more closely. No Judges "inturpit" it to mean anyting they want to. Years ago an American was respected, now we are a joke. I know of Millions of people who Love Bush, many overseas that have a much freer country today because of him. Obama wants a government run state, like Europe, and Soviet Union. I like the eariler times when a person could go out and start a business, without having to jump over so many regulations they just had to quit. Spending/printing Money is not what we need we need a president that will allow the americans to go out and make a life fof themselves, and not make everyone dependant on social programs. What kind of future will we have if our children will have to pay this dificet off, or will we be forclosed on by China? The Obama future looks a lot worse to me.

Where was Rubio when George Bush and Dick Cheney falsified intelligence reports, creating the myth of WMD's in Iraq, causing the American Invasion of a sovereign nation, and spending trillions of American Tax Dollars on two wars that served no purpose whatsoever? Where was Rubio when Banking Regulations were reduced, allowing Wall Street to create a "depression" not a recession that cost 4.5 Million American Jobs prior to the January 20, 2009 swearing in ceremony for the current president? Where was Rubio when Wall Street pulled the same tricks last week, and we see everyone in Washington trying to explain the need for stronger regulations for Wall Street? As a Republican Voter, I think you are not getting through to me Mr. Rubio!

The Democratic 2006 Congress Made those banking regulations, that didn't reduce regulation, but allowed Fanny and Freddy to make government backed loans, to poor people who couldn't afford them. Then force the Banks to accept them. JPM and other banks are still allowed to inverst, this time they lost 2% of their money. I just wish the Government would only loose this much. instead of the 2 Trillion a year, and not a peep. Of course the people will have to bail out the Government, not JPM. All world intelligence agencys believed Iraq had WMD because for the 10 previous years they had been using them in the north against the Kurds. So they did have them, but with the Gutting of the intelligence agenticys all of US Europe thought they have even more. So from what I read Romney needs to have a illegal mexican as a vice presidental nominee for the Latino's to vote for him? But it is ok for a community organizer and a big mouth to run, go figure. Romney would not have been my choice but he is far better person to run the country then Obama. The side everyone forgets is it is congress that controls the purse strings, and we need more tea party people in there that are willing to really get back to Constitutional values and stop all this waistful spending.

sorry to say, nycl, but you are wrong. Intel was pushed to find any evidence of WMD, which were then touted as proof of wmd. When Cheny was secdef, I had the ill luck to brief him and our conclusions did not match his. I lost one pound of hamburger off my backside as he ripped me a new one. So, everybody on you tube you refer to to were taken, even the New York Times.

Even if Bush told the TRUTH (which I doubt), wars are UNFUNDED and a war TAX should be passed to pay for those war games. Republicons wont mind paying for a WAR TAX because they believe that anyone opposing WAR is being unpatriotic.

I dont condone any pandering, especially to certain groups as if they arent americans, i think its offensive to everyone and very divisive. IMO, its as bad as the lobbying problem we have, its the primary issue I have with Obama, being divisive.

Obama has done at least ONE big thing since taking office--instead of hanging on the EDGE of the cliff, we are a SAFER distance from it and are edging more and more to safer ground.

If Mitt Romney is voted in, OVER the cliff we go...and FAST. Ask Mitt for any NEW solutions he has besides:

                1. Giving tax breaks to BIG business

                2. Deregulating BIG business

                3. Continuing war...FOREVER

                4. Complaining about the deficit while running for office, then driving it sky high with unfunded WARS and unfunded TAX CUTS for the wealthy

                5. Supporting benefits cuts of workers by corporations (which means sticking the middle class with even MORE higher taxes). Benefit cuts are a HUGE drop in wages for the middle class.

                6. INSENSITIVE to ANY needs of the middle class working poor INCLUDING social security and medicare (which they want to demolish). Remember this was the FIRST thing Bush went after when he was elected.

                7. Dismantling government that serves ALL to government that serves only the RICH. In other words....privatize EVERY service so that an unaffordable PROFIT (for the middle class ) can be gotten from it.

                8. Blame the poor, while pushing policies that take away the livlihood (meaning...means of making a LIVING wage) of more and more people FORCING them into poverty.

Mitt Romney, we have had YOUR KIND in public office for over 30 years and YOU and all YOUR comrades need to go live where you stash all that hidden cash OUTSIDE this country.

This country, the average American simply can’t take a return to “more of the same”, Bush-Cheney style, with the “puppet” politicians performing as their “strings are pulled” ... and that is exactly what “the money” wants, what they are paying for. The likes of Rove, Cheney, Norquist, SuperPacs and several others are all selling just that, the organization, control and power over the party, and then the likes of Boehner, McConnell, Cantor, Ryan, Bachmann and several others are dutifully performing. “The money” is aggressively paying for it to emphatically assure their interests are the total concentration, without any concern for the majority, as has been totally proven over the last twelve years. They say whatever they feel will excite and sway the people, always rationalized as “conservative”, but do only what “the money” wants and then depend on the power and influence of “the money” to help con the people and manipulate public opinion. The Republican / Tea Party has literally become owned and controlled by “the money” and the only way to break that stranglehold that continually pushes this country further into being a two-class society, with “the few” (1%) competing in having it all while the majority (99%) keeps loosing more, is to firmly and totally reject their “puppet” candidates / politicians, and thereby render “the money” ineffective. It is up to the voters.

Well said Cogito.... Not one single military budget cut and the banking bailouts are sailing all over the globe for the last 4 years to the tune of over $18 TRILLION! The handoff for all the bailouts was absolutely seamless when Obama took over from Bush. Every single bailout put on the table by Bush was passed without question by Obama. The borrowing just keeps growing out of control.

The two party's are two heads feeding the same body. They are still existing only for the ignorant to believe they have a choice. When you look at the lobby contribution lists the party's are so identical you would think they both have the same exact national committee running them.

The 2012 election is completely rigged. Watching the corruption, collusion and racketeering going on during the GOP primary made me sick. They are so sloppy now they don't even hide all the crap anymore. The Democrats refuse to even discuss a "plan" to correct their miserable failure.... Just more of the same crap.

Follow the money flowing into the party's and NOT the senseless babbling they do.

Considering that Republicans have been planting ideological Toxic Amendments into every budget process (NDAA was a military budget by the way) such as the sections 1031/1032 of the NDAA. Howabout funding something with cuts to social programs, how about cutting social programs completely out. The Tea Party a minority like the bolsheveks, are like the tail wagging the dog.
