“House Speaker John Boehner maintained his hard line on the nation’s debt ceiling in an interview that aired Sunday, saying he is ‘not going to apologize for leading,’” the Boston Globe writes, adding, “Boehner rejected the notion that the anxiety of another debt battle could harm the nation’s economic recovery.”
He also noted though that his caucus is a pretty “disparate” one. “It is hard to keep 218 frogs in a wheelbarrow long enough to get a bill passed,” he said on ABC’s This Week.
On NBC’s Meet the Press, Paul Ryan backed Boehner. “If we fix the programs that are the drivers of our debt, then we reduce a debt crisis likelihood,” Ryan said. “Then we actually bring borrowing down, which opens up certainty for investors.”
AP’s Babington wonders: “Is GOP trying to sabotage economy to hurt Obama?”
Congressional speech has dropped a grade level to 10th grade. The top two members – Reps. Dan Lungren (R-CA) and Lucille Roybal-Allard (D-CA). The bottom two – Reps. Mick Mulvaney (R-SC) and Rob Woodall (R-GA).
Political Wire: “Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) was ‘forced to sell his dream home’ in Utah with ‘his mortgage bank taking a significant loss -- up to $400,000 -- in a 'short sale' as the housing bust in his neighborhood drained his house's value,’ the Salt Lake Tribune reports.”

The headline says it all, MSDNC starts with a biased opinion ! Both sides share blame to some degree, but somewhere along the way, our country must HAVE A BUDGET and then make a real effort to live within that budget. Anything less will push the U.S. closer to financial chaos and bankruptcy.
Please give me a break, they are both playing politics. Are you folks so blinded that you can not see for yourself. On another note, the market has be down now for the last 3 weeks, almost 1,000 point from the height of 13,350. I do not want the economy to get worse because it will hurt all Americans, but we do need a good change and that is why I'm still voting for Mitt come November.
Boehner's position and statements are exactly what this article implies... a direct attempt to hold back the economy. His play here, combined with the mindless pandering from Romney, equals a "wait and see" for big money and business leaders in general.
The last time Boehner did this, he virtually wiped out consumer confidence AND business confidence. He's misguided, but he's not stupid. He well knows the cause and effect of a stalled economy... and he is it.
Here's the play... if you were starting a business or planning on a large expansion of business and had the money to do it (and they do), would you do it when there is a high risk of low consumer confidence and zero demand? Would you expand now or wait for the Romney promise of big tax windfalls and no commitment to health insurance? And a large corporate expansion now would help Obama, so would you do it?
I think not. This is not a coincidence nor an accident. This is a well executed plan.
But here's the reality: Our economy will come roaring back the instant the election is over and the debt ceiling issue is resolved... there will be no reason to wait, unless the GOP plan takes us to our knees again. But hey, we've recovered from their "play" before, we can do it again.
Clinton passed the Omnibus Act aka Deficit Reduction Act of 1993 without a single Republican vote. The result? Clinton handed over to Bush a country with low unemployment, smaller government, smaller debt, balanced budged and no wars.
Obama inherited total crap: growing unemployment, larger government, two wars, growing debt, and defici and huge interest on the mortgage taken out by the Bush Administration. On top of that, he inherited a financial meltdown that went around the world like a Tsunami.
On top of that, as a inaguration "gift", Obama was given a secret meeting between the Republican leaders to make him a one term president no matter how obtained.
Anyone who denies that there is no obstruction by the Party of No is in denial.
You call it obstruction. I call it stopping the progressive agenda. That is what shoud have been there from day one, till now. I am one of those who is glad to see obama and the progressive followers stopped at every turn. Call it what you want, but it is not about hurting the people of this great country, just stopping the socialist agenda.
MRWSR.
Your throw away use of the term socialist agenda displays your lack of command of the English language.
There is no way you can justify the use of that term other than you got it from Mr. Limpba.
The time for you and yours to stop the "progressive agenda" was in November 2008. The Teapublicans lost the election and never acknowledged the authority of the bona-fide leader of the United States of America. Instead, it set out to use every means to frustrate his mandate.
Madate? A socialist mandate.
True fairness means rewarding merit, not spreading the wealth.
MRWSR
Appears you don't have a dictionary handy. Here's a tip. Search "Socialist" in Wikipedia, it's free and you seem to be able to use a computer. Please share the definition with your friends so we don't have to keep correcting the Limpba crowd.
If you really think that obama and his followers are not setting up, already have or going to take over production in this country, then you are as left as he is.
It is the truth. His health care bill, is not an overhaul, its an overtake. GM, 88% of green funded programs, etc........
His tax policies alone tell you his heart.
MRWSR
Signing off, no point discoursing with an extremist true believer. No, I am not a socialist but I am a rational person.
Don't use loyal Texan. It is offensive to us that are. bye, bye, come back when you got something.
LOYALTEXAN - you cannot argue with MRWSR. He's been brainwashed by the stupidity of the GOP. clearly intelligence is not his strong point so he's going to keep throwing out "socialist" whenever he gets the chance - hoping someone will be dumb enough to believe it and be frighted by the word!
You can't fix stupid!
SeekingSanity,
Sorry you feel that I am stupid. This is a quoute from a very wise conservative, whom I agree with very much,
There are different classifications of who and how the GOP has hurt the economy.
The first group are those who still believe in failed Milton Friedman and supply-side voodoo economics, for example the Tea Party who are divided between those who want smaller government and those who want no government at all (anarchy). These 'minions' are easily manipulated by the oligarchy propaganda.
The second group are those like Boehner who find themselves between a rock and a hard place, with the Tea Party applying pressure from the bottom, and his oligarchy masters (the 1% and Big Business) pressuring him from above. This is why many such as Olympia Snowe and other more moderate Republicans are leaving Congress.
Then there is the third, and most dastardly group, such as Grover Norquist and Paul Ryan, who are in cahoots with propaganda artists like Karl Rove and Frank Luntz, with FOX Noise and Hate Radio as their mouthpiece. Paul Ryan knows very well that his "budget" is despicable. Too bad the media doesn't do more investigative reporting into the money behind Norquist, and what's in it for Paul Ryan.
But we know, with certainty that the GOP has conspired with premeditation to obstruct the president and Dems with a united front. To do this, they have had to vote against their own legislation/ideas, and worst of all they have thrown the American people under the bus. They rationalize that is is only until 2012, and so what if thousands suffer in the meantime -- for them the ends justify the means. They are NOT representing the people -- They aren't even being good citizens, and are bordering on treason.
Throw the Teapublicans out -- Obama/Biden - 2012!
He is staying in line with what he believes and what the people who elected him want him to do. He is correct in his statements and I commend him for standing up and not backing down. Good job Mr Speaker. Thank you for standing firm.
The GOP is making a concerted attempt to keep the economy bad - in a desperate hope it will bolster the GOP in November. However, intelligent Americans know who is to blame for this debacle and the GOP is set to lose big time in November. Their obstructionist tactics in Congress have kept our recovery from moving as quickly as it should. Once we get rid of some of the GOP in November, we will be able to make strides in recovering from the mess Bush created.
The recovery will still be slow - it's just the nature of this recession - but it will be better once many of the obstructionists from the GOP are voted out.
Obama/Biden 2012
I think what you meant to say was, 'no matter what happens with the economy, libs will always vote democrat, they wont even look at the name they are voting for, they will just vote party lines regardless because they truely believe democrats do no wrong'
Just wanted to clear that up for you.
trudate6445 - I think what you meant to say was, Republicans will vote to kill the middle class because they are too stupid to understand that destroying the middle class also destroys the country. I understand you will vote a straight GOP party ticket because you don't understand that Romney has no ideas and will continue down the same path Bush did and to hell with the country. I know you don't understand the economy so there is no reason to try to educate you. You will vote with the far right who want to take the country backward because you don't understand progress.
Just wanted to clear that up for you but I know you won't understand it anyway so it's really a waste of time with you!
Wow, the 'i know you are but what am i' defense, I see that alot from libs. Too bad everything you said about me, was wrong, where as everything i said about you and your fellow libs, was true.
Seeking Sanity,
I am middle class and I am not being destroyed. Glad you are a MSNBC robot that a programed talking point.
Democrats have control of the White House. Democrats under Harry Reid control the Senate where House passed legislation is halted by Harry. Obama has been frequent and aggressive with the usage of "executive commands" and with his appointment of unelected "czars" for everything.
So now the Dems want to blame the lack of economic turnaround on the Republicans ? Are you kidding me ? Republicans have been unable to do anything and they are at fault ??? LOL !!! It must be Bush's fault !!!!!
What happened during Obama's first two years of office ... when the Congress was still dominated by the Dems ? What happened with the Stimulus and all those "shovel-ready" jobs ?? Are you going to try and blame that on Republicans as well ???
The Stimulus didn't work and the "shovel ready" jobs, according to Obama, were not so shovel ready. Then, along comes Obamacare to chill American entrepreneurs down to their bones. Along comes threatened "Cap and Trade" legislation which will raise energy costs. Along comes a further proliferation of new, unchecked EPA regulations.
The only thing the Republican's are hurting the the progressive agenda.
Until we get a budget in place, how are we supposed to reform the deficit? Anyone with a blank checkbook would be grinning from ear to ear!
How is this not "PRIORITY #1"?
Maybe you can remind Rep. Boner that it is the responsibility of the House of Representatives to formulate and pass the Federal Budget. That carries with it a duty to propose a realistic budget that can be debated in the Senate. Throwing out a series of partisan political budgets with no hope of adoption has been a pattern of irresponsibility by Mr. Boner and his House of Representatives.
Enough with blaming POTUS.
As the Dems would sez, "We don't need no damn budget! Wez gots the continuing resolution-which if those frigen Repulicians don't vote for, the checks to the welfare bunch will not fly! Then they will burn every city in America. WE got dem by the BALLS!!HEHEHEHHE An our friends, da media will enforce de heat for us!Nice thang bout that resolution, Barrack can spend it anyway he wants too! Esp in Dem Districts:)
This Country is divided about equally between the moochers and the workers. Moochers vote for pols who promise them more thangs that they steal/tax from the workers. They also borrow on future workers tax monies to give the moochers even more stuff to keep them loyal voters! Moochers who do not work have time to "occupy, riot, and terrorize the weaker workers who live in fear of the Moochers.......The Dem party is a coalition of moochers, 3rd world brown people, hollywood elitists, ugly feminists, militant homosexuals and transsexuals, and white apologists. Collectively, they equal the working middle class vote wise. These are the two divides in America. Don't see alot of room for compromise>
That is a FACT. They have on purpose failed to do anything that would help America out of the doldrums that George W. Bush gave us. They have hung on to the Bush tax cuts as a ransom for everything they wanted. They want to reward the 1 % at the expense of the other 99% and they want to do anything that will make Obama the fall guy. The Republicans don't care about the middle class, they want to break us but President Obama won't let them. He has succeeded despite little or no help from the Republicans who to this day continue to play partisan politics. The Neo-Con Nazi's would rather see the U.S.A. fall than to see President Obama succeed. Even Ronald Reagan wouldn't pull this crap. John Boehener & Mitch McConnell [even our democratic leaders too-REID & Pelosi] should besent packing out the door. All four are a big wastes of human beings. Maybe someday both parties can get some real leadership instead of Obstructionists...
Let me think about this for a minute - HELL YES! Finally an article THE PRESS SHOULD BE TALKING ABOUT.
The President can't get JUDGES Dept. Heads Sorely needed appointed. The MOST IMPORTANT - JOBS. The Republican House and Senate are BLOCKING this bill which will create JOBS in their States.
They are putting the Health and Safety of the Country for Projects that are ready to go, such as Repairs of Bridges, Roads, which is part of Highway Safety which Leads to Local Governments hiring Staff and awarding Contracts to Private Contractors; Republicans are also Against this providing Health Care for everyone, which puts us behind the Rest of Industrialized World.
All of this is at RISK, because of this TOTAL OBSTRUCTIONISM and the DAMAGE they are doing to the Office of the Presidency because President Obama is in it. Republicans have let DIVISIVENESS BECOME THE MAIN thing they Govern ON by Pitting the Young and the Old against each other BY calling those Safety Nets for people ENTITLEMENTS". Entitlements People have paid into all of their Working lives. We will NOT TALK ABOUT those Minorities they let in to AFFIRM THEIR MIS-INFORMATION about their LIES AGAINST their own Ethnic Groups. It is like the Average American who VOTES Republican against their own Interest.
It took Sunlight Foundation and Money to say Freshman Republicans are not up to the Grade? They could have paid me WAY less to get the same answer. Intelligent thinking people need only look at how most of these REPUBLICAN/TEA came to Congress, HATRED/ BIGOTRY for President Obama and AMNESIA that it was Republicans who GOT THEM into the ECONOMIC MESS they are railing against.
One also ONLY needs to WITNESS the DEBT CEILING DEBACLE with these folks and the pure DISRESPECT, for the Office of the Presidency, Starting with "You Lie Congressman" Joe Wilson (I hope he gets VOTED off the ISLAND). From there it has been downhill with Republicans trying to AT LEAST give the Appearance of trying to GOVERN the Country, which they are not and have not Since Obama became President.
Boehner / Nor McConnell cannot Control these people, so they GO ALONG to keep their Chairmanships. So what we have is TOTAL SLASH AND BURN of the United States Government.
SORRY NO JOBS FOLKS. These Republican/TEA Folks LIED to GET ELECTED and all they are doing is making the Country WORST OFF in order to OBSTRUCT any Good President Obama could do, if they would just meet him half-way.
They actually want the Country to Fail to Hurt President Obama's re-election chances. REPORT ON THAT PRESS!
It is no surprise that the GOP has and planned to destroy Obama and the country
