The Week that Was: Obama vs. Romney

Mark Murray and Domenico Montanaro discuss four stories from this week that could impact the 2012 campaign. New Obama ads attack Romney's work at Bain Capital while a GOP super PAC considers rehashing the Rev. Wright attack on Obama from 2008. Romney nearly matches Obama in April fundraising, and John Boehner hints at another debt ceiling showdown.

I don't know about anyone else, but this past week has left me exhausted! lol

Revisiting Jeremiah Wright was one of the biggest blunders from Camp Willard so far in this campaign!

Just happy to see, he was pushed back on it... HARD!

Meanwhile, here in Chicago Land, Rahm Emmanuel is still refusing to talk to the Rickett's family & we get a weekend of protests during the NATO summit!

Oh the JOY!

I would like to think Romney finally showed some courage, but alas, I suspect he doesn't want to go down the "Religion Path." Just like McCain, who was born in Panama didn't want to go down the "Birther Path." Of course this never stops surrogates and ads from unknown sponsors from doing it. Call me cynical, but hey, just sayin...

Okay, totally off subject but do you guys think Romney hits the same tanning spa Boehner does? They look amazingly similar. Okay, Boehner IS a little more orange but otherwise - just sayin....

hueydriver9id, et al, we realize you have amnesia or some other learning disability... The Jeremiah Wright distortion (taken out of contest--listen to the complete sermon) was all over the news for a long time during the 2008 election -- So much so that President Obama made his now famous speech about race. Where the hell were you people?

Anyone who believes that supporters of the president just haven't seen the "truth" of this, and if they saw this (or any other rightwing tinfoil hat conspiracy) somehow they would be "converted" and no longer support him -- You are truly an idiot.

Further to my post above about the "Religion Path," if the rightwing claims President Obama was shaped by the teachings of his church (and contrary to being a Muslim therefore?), then it would be fair game to investigate the influence of the Mormon church on Romney -- Most notably the discrimination against blacks being able to hold the priesthood up to 1978 when Romney was proselytizing (teaching/defending this position) as a missionary.

Come on, do you people have no logic, no ability to connect dots or powers of deduction, no Rule of Reason? No, we already know the answer.

Looks like B.O. tried to use pleadings and then sought to use money to get old Wright out of his hair. Course, if you have been attending Wright's church for twenty years. Connecting the dots - how about this:

Obama’s Broken Promises

Increase the capital gains and dividends taxes for higher-income taxpayers

Increase capital gains and

(couples) or $200,000 (single)

Create a foreclosure prevention fund for homeowners

Create a $10 billion fund to help homeowners refinance or sell their homes. "The Fund will not help
speculators, people who bought vacation homes or people who falsely represented their incomes."

Provide option for a pre-filled-out tax form

Will direct the Internal Revenue Service to "give taxpayers the option of a pre-filled tax form to
verify, sign and return to the IRS or online. This will eliminate the need for Americans to hire expensive tax preparers and to gather information that the federal government already has on file."

maximum credit of $800.

Create a retirement savings tax credit for low incomes
A tax credit for retirement savings up to $500 (couples) or $250 (singles). Phases out when incomes exceed $65,000 (couples) or $32,500 (single). Indexed for inflation.

End income tax for seniors making less than $50,000

"Will eliminate al lincome taxation of seniors making less than $50,000 per year. This will eliminate taxes for 7 million seniors -- saving them an average of $1,400 a year-- and will also mean that 27 million seniors will not need to file an income tax return at all."

End no-bid contracts above $25,000

"Will ensure that federal contracts over $25,000 are competitively bid."

Repeal the Bush tax cuts for higher incomes
Repeal the Bush tax cuts for those making more than $250,000 (couples) or $200,000 (single)

Phase out exemptions and deductions for higher earners
Restore the phaseouts of personal exemptions and itemized deductions for those making more than $250,000 (couples) or $200,000 (single), with threshholds indexed for inflation.

Sign the Employee Free Choice Act, making it easier for workers to unionize

"Obama is a cosponsor and strong advocate of the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA), a bipartisan effort
to make the unionization process more transparent and increase penalties on companies that violate employee rights. He will sign EFCA into law as president."

Lift the payroll tax cap on earnings above $250,000

"Barack Obama believes that the first place to look to strengthen Social Security is the payroll tax
system. Obama believes that one strong option is increasing the maximum amount of earnings covered by Social Security by lifting the payroll tax cap on only earnings above $250,000."

Forbid companies in bankruptcy from giving executives bonuses

"Protect the jobs and benefits of workers and retirees when corporations file for bankruptcy by
telling companies that they cannot issue bonuses for executives during bankruptcy while their workers watch their pensions disappear."

improve awareness of ASD and improve the training of medical professionals to identify and treat ASD. By establishing one top-level point person to coordinate ASD efforts in the White House, they will ensure that ASD receives the recognition and priority it deserves in the federal government. The Federal ASD Coordinator will also be tasked with eliminating bureaucratic obstacles that may be delaying mplementation of important ASD measures and ensuring that all federal ASD dollars are being spent in a manner that prioritizes results. The Coordinator will work with state task forces on ASD to ensure effective
communication and collaboration among federal, state, and local agencies."

Double federal funding for cancer research

"Will double federal funding for cancer research within 5 years, focusing on NIH (National
Institutes of Health) and NCI (National Cancer Institute)."

Direct the Secretary of Health and Human Services to conduct a comprehensive study of federal cancer initiatives

As president, Barack Obama will immediately direct his Secretary of Health and Human Services, in
collaboration with agency officials, academic researchers, cancer survivors and advocates for people with cancer, and state public health officials, to comprehensively examine the various cancer-related efforts of federal agencies, and provide recommendations to eliminate barriers to effective coordination across federal agencies and between the federal government and other stakeholders."

Provide the CDC $50 million in new funding to determine the most effective approaches for cancer patient care

assist not only navigation of cancer patients through diagnosis and treatment processes, but also provide easy-to-understand information on the necessary follow-up steps to ensure continued lifelong health."

Fully fund the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)

"Barack Obama has been a strong and consistent advocate for fully funding the Individuals with
Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Congress promised to shoulder 40 percent of each state's "excess cost" of educating children with disabilities, but it has never lived up to this obligation. Currently, the federal government provides less than half of the promised funding (17 percent)."

Create a National Commission on People with Disabilities, Employment, and Social Security

the SSDI, SSI, Medicare, and Medicaid," among other things.

treatment for federal contracts.

the Small Business Act that provide preferences in federal contracting to small businesses owned by members of socially and economically disadvantaged groups to include individuals with disabilities."

Reduce the threshhold for the Family and Medical Leave Act from companies with 50 employees to companies with 25 employees

"The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) provides eligible employees of larger employers (i.e., 50 or
more employees) with 12 weeks of unpaid leave to care for a family member's or their own serious health condition. Barack Obama and Joe Biden will guarantee that millions more workers have access to FMLA leave by reducing the threshold for which employers are covered from companies with 50 or more employees to those with 25 or more."

Provide a $1.5 billion
fund to help states launch programs for paid family and medical leave

"As president, Barack
Obama and Joe Biden will initiate a 50-state strategy to encourage all of the
states to adopt paid-leave systems (as part of the Family and Medical Leave
Act). Barack Obama and Joe Biden will provide a $1.5 billion fund to assist
states with start-up costs and to help states offset the costs for employees
and employers. Obama's Department of Labor will also provide technical
information to the states on how to craft paid-leave programs consistent with
their local needs."

five million Iraqis (who) are refugees or are displaced inside their own
country."

Work with Russia to move
nuclear weapons off hair-trigger alert

"The United States and
Russia have thousands of nuclear weapons on hair-trigger alert. Barack Obama
believes that we should take our nuclear weapons off hair-trigger alert --
something that George W. Bush promised to do when he was campaigning for
president in 2000. Maintaining this Cold War stance today is unnecessary and
increases the risk of an accidental or unauthorized nuclear launch. As
president, Obama will work with Russia to find common ground and bring
significantly more weapons off hair-trigger alert."

Close the Guantanamo Bay
Detention Center

"As president, Barack
Obama will close the detention facility at Guantanamo."

Develop an alternative to
President Bush's Military Commissions Act on handling detainees

"He will reject the
Military Commissions Act, which allowed the U.S. to circumvent Geneva
Conventions in the handling of detainees. He will develop a fair and thorough
process based on the Uniform Code of Military Justice to distinguish between
those prisoners who should be prosecuted for their crimes, those who can't be
prosecuted but who can be held in a manner consistent with the laws of war, and
those who should be released or transferred to their home countries."

Secure ratification of
the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT)

"The United States has
maintained a moratorium on testing since 1992. It signed the Comprehensive Test
Ban Treaty (CTBT) in 1996, but it has not been ratified yet. Since the U.S.
Senate last considered the treaty in 1999, significant progress has been made
in our verification capability to detect nuclear explosions, even at extremely
low yields, and to ensure confidence in the reliability of our nuclear
stockpile without nuclear testing."

Seek to negotiate a
political agreement on Cyprus

"As president, Barack
Obama will show U.S. leadership in seeking to negotiate a political settlement
on Cyprus. He believes strongly that Cyprus should remain a single, sovereign
country in which each of the two communities on the island is able to exercise
substantial political authority within a bi-zonal, bi-communal
federation."

Reinstate special envoy
for the Americas

"In the past, American
presidents have filled the position of special envoy to bring senior-level
attention to hemispheric matters that might otherwise get buried in the normal
diplomatic process. Unfortunately, the position was eliminated after the post
was vacated in June of 2004. As president Barack Obama will reinstate the
position."

Double the Peace Corps

"Barack Obama will
double the Peace Corps to 16,000 by its 50th anniversary in 2011 and push
Congress to fully fund this expansion, with a focus on Latin America and the
Caribbean."

Create a public
"Contracts and Influence" database

"Will create a
'contracts and influence' database that will disclose how much federal
contractors spend on lobbying, and what contracts they are getting and how well
they complete them."

Allow five days of public
comment before signing bills

To reduce bills rushed
through Congress and to the president before the public has the opportunity to
review them, Obama "will not sign any non-emergency bill without giving
the American public an opportunity to review and comment on the White House
website for five days."

Tougher rules against
revolving door for lobbyists and former officials

"No political
appointees in an Obama-Biden administration will be permitted to work on
regulations or contracts directly and substantially related to their prior
employer for two years. And no political appointee will be able to lobby the
executive branch after leaving government service during the remainder of the
administration."

Double funding for
afterschool programs

"Will double funding
for the main federal support for afterschool programs, the 21st Century
Learning Centers program, to serve one million more children."

Expand the Employment
Non-Discrimination Act to include sexual orientation and gender identity

Will "place the weight
of (his) administration behind...a fully inclusive Employment
Non-Discrimination Act to outlaw workplace discrimination on the basis of
sexual orientation and gender identity."

Urge states to treat
same-sex couples with full equality in their family and adoption laws

As president, "will use
the bully pulpit to urge states to treat same-sex couples with full equality in
their family and adoption laws."

Allow bankruptcy judges
to modify terms of a home mortgage

Will repeal provisions of
the Chapter 13 law that prohibit bankruptcy judges from modifying the original
terms of home mortgages for ordinary families -- regardless of whether the loan
was predatory or unfair or is otherwise unaffordable -- "so that ordinary
families can also get relief that bankruptcy laws were intended to
provide."

Increase the minimum wage
to $9.50 an hour

"Will further raise the
minimum wage to $9.50 an hour by 2011, index it to inflation and increase the
Earned Income Tax Credit to make sure that full-time workers can earn a living
wage that allows them to raise their families and pay for basic needs such as
food, transportation, and housing."

Restore Superfund program
so that polluters pay for clean-ups

"Will restore the
strength of the Superfund program by requiring polluters to pay for the cleanup
of contaminated sites they created."

Re-establish the National
Aeronautics and Space Council

Will re-establish an
organizational authority in the federal government with a sufficiently broad
mandate to oversee a comprehensive and integrated strategy and policy dealing
with all aspects of the government's space-related programs, including those
being managed by NASA, the Department of Defense, the National Reconnaissance
Office, the Commerce Department, the Transportation Department, and other
federal agencies. This Council reporting to the president "will oversee
and coordinate civilian, military, commercial and national security space
activities. It will solicit public participation, engage the international
community, and work toward a 21st century vision of space that constantly
pushes the envelope on new technologies as it pursues a balanced national
portfolio that expands our reach into the heavens and improves life here on
Earth."

Support human mission to
moon by 2020

Will "endorse the goal
of sending human missions to the Moon by 2020, as a precursor in an orderly
progression to missions to more distant destinations, including Mars."

Pay for the national
service plan without increasing the deficit

"Will maintain fiscal
responsibility and prevent any increase in the deficit by offsetting cuts and
revenue sources in other parts of the government (to pay for a national service
plan that will cost about $3.5 billion per year when it is fully implemented).
This plan will be paid for in part by cancelling tax provisions that would
otherwise help multinational corporations pay less in U.S. taxes starting in
2008 by reallocating tax deductions for interest expenses between income earned
in the U.S. and income earned abroad. The rest of the plan will be funded using
a small portion of the savings associated with ending the war in Iraq."

Reduce the number of
middle managers in the federal workforce

"Barack Obama will thin
the ranks of Washington middle managers, freeing up resources both for deficit
reduction and for increasing the number of frontline workers."

Strengthen the Age
Discrimination in Employment Act

"Obama will fight job
discrimination for aging employees by strengthening the Age Discrimination in
Employment Act and empowering the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission to
prevent all forms of discrimination."

Limit term of director of
national intelligence

"Will insulate the
Director of National Intelligence from political pressure by giving the DNI a
fixed term, like the Chairman of the Federal Reserve. Obama and Biden will seek
consistency and integrity at the top of our intelligence community -- not just
a political ally."

Give annual "State
of the World" address

"I'll give an annual
'State of the World' address to the American people in which I lay out our
national security policy."

levels

"Barack Obama is
committed to returning earmarks to less than $7.8 billion a year, the level
they were at before 1994."

Enact windfall profits
tax for oil companies

"Will require oil
companies to take a reasonable share of their record-breaking windfall profits
and use it to provide direct relief worth $500 for an individual and $1,000 for
a married couple. The relief would be delivered as quickly as possible to help
families cope with the rising price of gasoline, food and other necessities.
The rebates would be fully paid for with five years of a windfall profits tax
on record oil company profits."

Create cap and trade
system with interim goals to reduce global warming

"Will set a hard cap on
all carbon emissions at a level that scientists say is necessary to curb global
warming - an 80% reduction by 2050. To ensure this isn't just talk, I will also
commit to interim targets toward this goal in 2020, 2030, and 2040. These
reductions will start immediately, and we'll continue to follow the
recommendations of top scientists to ensure that our targets are strong enough
to meet the challenge we face."

Require plug-in fleet at
the White House

"Within one year of
becoming President, the entire White House fleet will be converted to plug-ins
as security permits."

Use revenue from cap and
trade to support clean energy and environmental restoration

"A small portion of the
receipts generated by auctioning [cap and trade] allowances ($15 billion per
year) will be used to support the development of clean energy, invest in energy
efficiency improvements, and help develop the next generation of biofuels and
clean energy vehicles – measures that will help the economy and help meet the
emissions reduction targets. It will also be used to provide new funding to

state and federal land and wildlife managers to restore habitat, create
wildlife migration corridors, and assist fish and wildlife to adapt to the
effects of a warming climate. All remaining receipts will be used for rebates
and other transition relief to ensure that families and communities are not
adversely impacted by the transition to a new energy, low carbon economy."

Require more flex-fuel
cars for the federal government

"Government should lead
the way here. I showed up at this event in a government vehicle that does not
have a flexible-fuel tank. When I'm president, I will make sure that every
vehicle purchased by the federal government does."

Mandate flexible fuel
vehicles by 2012

"Will work with Congress

"I will report to the
American people every year on the State of our Energy Future."

Allow penalty-free
hardship withdrawals from retirement accounts in 2008 and 2009

"Obama and Biden are
calling for legislation that would allow withdrawals of 15% up to $10,000 from
retirement accounts without penalty (although subject to the normal taxes).
This would apply to withdrawals in 2008 (including retroactively) and
2009."

Recognize the Armenian
genocide

"Two years ago, I
criticized the Secretary of State for the firing of U.S. Ambassador to Armenia,
John Evans, after he properly used the term 'genocide' to describe Turkey's
slaughter of thousands of Armenians starting in 1915. … as President I will
recognize the Armenian Genocide."

No family making less
than $250,000 will see "any form of tax increase."

"I can make a firm
pledge. Under my plan, no family making less than $250,000 a year will see any
form of tax increase. Not your income tax, not your payroll tax, not your
capital gains taxes, not any of your taxes."

Negotiate health care
reform in public sessions televised on C-SPAN

To achieve health care
reform, "I'm going to have all the negotiations around a big table. We'll
have doctors and nurses and hospital administrators. Insurance companies, drug
companies -- they'll get a seat at the table, they just won't be able to buy
every chair. But what we will do is, we'll have the negotiations televised on
C-SPAN, so that people can see who is making arguments on behalf of their
constituents, and who are making arguments on behalf of the drug companies or
the insurance companies. And so, that approach, I think is what is going to
allow people to stay involved in this process."

Create a public option
health plan for a new National Health Insurance Exchange.

"The exchange will
require that all the plans offered are at least as generous as the new public
plan and meet the same standards for quality and efficiency."

Introduce a comprehensive
immigration bill in the first year

"I cannot guarantee that
it is going to be in the first 100 days. But what I can guarantee is that we
will have in the first year an immigration bill that I strongly support and
that I'm promoting. And I want to move that forward as quickly as
possible."

The more I watch that ad by Romney, the more mind-bending it is that he would pick these three LIES:

Day 1 Lie – Keystone Pipeline will create 1,000s of American jobs blocked by Obama. Riiight.

Day 2 Lie – Tax cuts and reform.* (*Tax cuts only for the rich).

Day 2 Lie – "Repeal and Replace" health care reform.* (Repeal, yes, replace not so much.)

Come on, couldn't his campaign come up with a better plan pandering than this?

FR Moderators - Please collapse Thomas Weaver's cut and paste post above. It almost busted my scroll button. Expressing a view point is one thing, but to consume so much space, really?

It seems that a good number of people on the right are determined to drag Rev Wright back into another election and are quite upset at Mitt Romney for "repudiating" the notion--even though that was simply because his side was caught. First, the gain of Rev Wright remains questionable because voters didn't buy it the first time and heaven knows they were subjected to it 24/7 for weeks. Those voters who would buy the attempt to connect the two for anything more than going to church are the ones who already bought it the first time; they bought it and the birther nonsense, he's Kenyan and a secret Muslim. Those who are ignorant out of choice are already in the tank for Romney. Second, if Rev Wright is brought into the election again, it means that Romney's Mormon faith is fair game as well.

It's been the week that was alright, just getting on First Read and/or Newsvine has been a challenge. Maybe one of these days, the press will get serious about covering Mitt Romney and challenge his daily lies--then again, that is as likely to happen as Romney telling the truth is. Oh, wait, he did say that "I don't remember what I said before (about Rev Wright) but I stand by it". Well, that'll do it.

Jody, I hope the First Read Tech people resolve their problems with the site soon. Just being off for awhile today, and visiting other websites while First Read was down, reminded me how much I value this forum.

Meant to say, Jody, I also enjoyed your wrap up on First Thoughts. Thanks for paying such close attention to the news - so I don't have to!

Thoughts go off to all those regular posters facing medical challenges. Your contributions are valued too, and I miss the "regulars" when they aren't posting.

I hate it when the media tries too hard to be "fair and balanced". Fair and balanced means providing both sides of the issue, it doesn't mean trying to paint both sides as equal. There is no comparison of what Bain Capital did and what happened with the auto bailout. Bain Capital isn't in the business of creating jobs, it is in the business of creating wealth for its investors--if they happen to create jobs in the process, so be it but it's the flip side that needs to be fully exposed. Bain borrowed millions against the profitable companies they bought, they bled those firms dry, raided the pension funds, bankrupted the firms, closed the doors and left the employees and the towns and cities high and dry while Bain reaped millions in profits. It is a false equivalency to claim any similarity between the two.

Splain to Me Mark, How much $$$$$$$$ President Obama made PERSONALLY from the Auto Bailout as compared to Malibu Mitt & Bain Capital ?

I think that raised a red flag for quite a few of us - it stopped me dead in my tracks. As Jody says, Bain is not the bailout business, they are in the takeover business. From what I have read, Bain wouldn't touch the auto companies with a 10-foot pole.

Feisty - yeesh, more Wright wing-nut crap this week with a new spin that those of us wanting religion out of politics are now religious bigots. What a stretch.

And poor Romney, making off with a Newt style line. I wonder how long it will take before he denounces the liberal media and accuses them of misquoting his quotes, because whatever he said, he meant it, unless it is a quote, and then he didn't mean it. (my, my, Romney is making this too easy.)

Romney isn't great, but....his Church does not scream racist epitaphs about America deserving to have 9/11 inflicted upon it. He does not consort with the likes of admitted domestic terrorists that brag, "we didn't do enough". He doesn't admire Saul Alinsky, a known anti American communist. He doesn't have the American Communist Party endorsing his election campaign the way Obama does . He doesn't travel to every ally we have and apologize for being the USA. He won't take Air Force One on vacations to Hawaii and bilk the tax payers out of hundreds of millions to support his extended family when he does go to Hawaii .He doesn't and won't be going to George Clooney's Studio City Ca. home for $15 million dollar fund raisers from people who essentially hate the USA!

Those are a few of the reasons I am going to be voting for Mitt Romney in November for President and not Obama!

He won't take Air Force One on vacations to Hawaii and bilk the tax payers out of hundreds of millions to support his extended family when he does go to Hawaii .

Here we go again - don't you all ever get tired of repeating YOU lies?

Those who criticize the cost of Obama’s Christmas vacation don’t want you to
know that George W. Bush spent at least $20 million taxpayer dollars just on
flights to his ranch in Crawford.

The right wing has been outraged at the four million dollar plus price tag
for Obama’s family Christmas vacation, and they constantly hold George W. Bush
up as an example of how thrifty a president should be when going on vacation.

The problem is that W. wasn’t thrifty. He was the most expensive vacation
president in US history. Not only did Bush spend more days
on vacation than any other president
, but he used Air Force One more often
while on vacation than any other president.

During Bush’s two terms, the cost of operating Air Force One ranged from
        $56,800 to $68,000
an hour. Bush used Air Force One 77 times to go to his ranch in Crawford, TX.
Using the low end cost of $56,800, Media Matters calculated
that each trip to Crawford cost taxpayers $259,687 each time, and $20 million
        total for Bush’s ranch flights.

If cost of the flight was the only expense involved to taxpayers Bush’s
vacations would still seem rather economical, but there is more, much more.
        Unlike the Obama’s $4
        million Christmas vacation price tag
, which includes the cost of everything
from transportation to accommodations for the First Family, the White House
staff, and the White House press corps, Bush’s numbers only include the cost of
flying the president to Crawford. The cost of transporting and accommodating
staff, media, friends and family is not included in Bush’s vacation numbers.

In response to growing criticism that the president was on vacation too much,
the Bush administration adopted the Rovian tactic of scheduling, “work events,”
while the president was in Crawford so that they could claim that President
Bush’s vacations were working vacations. During his
infamous pre-9/11 August vacation, the AP reported
        that, “Using the ranch as
a base, he will promote White House initiatives in Rocky Mountain National Park,
Denver, Albuquerque, Milwaukee, Pittsburgh and San Antonio.”

        Bush’s
“working vacations” cost taxpayers a small fortune in travel costs
        because
President Bush and his staff would make day trips on Air Force One all across
the country in order to counter the criticism that he was on vacation too often.
For eight years, Bush essentially used Air Force One as his personal vacation
        taxi service.

Mr. Alinsky is a communist - who would have known?, especially considering he refused to join any group.

Alinsky did not join political parties. When asked during an interview whether he ever considered becoming a Communist party member, he replied:

Not at any time. I've never joined any organization—not even the ones I've organized myself. I prize my own independence too much. And philosophically, I could never accept any rigid dogma or ideology, whether it'sChristianity or Marxism. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saul_Alinsky

Alfie.......Oh you need to educate yourself on the Mormon faith, it is not too long ago that black people were less than welcome in their midst. And it is safe to assume there is many a Mormon today who was trained under these beliefs and who have carefully taught their descendents too. Here is a very brief lesson on their history towards African Americans:

Consider this excerpt from Wickepedia as your lesson for today on Mormonism and their relationship with people of a certain heritage.

From 1849 to 1978, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) had a policy against ordaining black men of African descent to the priesthood. Whereas other churches usually have full-time salaried clergy of whom individual members are often the chief minister to several families, in the LDS Church virtually all male head-of-household church members are part of the priesthood. Under the pre-1978 policy, black men of African descent could not hold the priesthood in this way, and were also prohibited from participating in the temple Endowment and sealings, ordinances that the church teaches are necessary for the highest degree of salvation. However, the LDS Church has always had an open membership policy for all races, but few black people who were aware of the racial policy joined the church.[1] In 1978, church leaders ceased the racial restriction policy for black men, declaring that they had received a revelation instructing them to do so. Today's church opposes racial discrimination and racism.[2]

In 1997, there were approximately 500,000 black members of the LDS Church, accounting for about 5% of the total membership; most black members live in Africa, Brazil and the Caribbean.[3] Since 1997, the black membership has grown substantially, especially in West Africa, where two temples have been built.[4]

Ah Gingerbread - as it was taught to me in the 60s/70s, the mark of Cain. I could never understand why a black person would join the church if there was no possibility of attaining the highest level of reward (the Celestial Kingdom). What I could also never understand is why the exclusion was only for blacks, all other races had equal opportunity. I do laugh because they hated my persistent questions like, what about children of mixed racial marriages. Do you think the Mormon church, after 30 years, has completely scrubbed away the bias? Only actions will tell.

It also makes one wonder, if God's bigotry against blacks was unfounded, could it also be that God's bigotry towards LGBTs and gay marriage might be unfounded? Perhaps God will take a page from Willard's book, and perform a giant flip-flop.

Ignorance at best Gingerbread, you seem not to understand the Mormon religion, but if you want to go down that road lets talk about Black Liberation Theology, you know the one Obama belonged to for over 20 years? I would rather deal with a Mormon than a Marxist. Below explains what Obama wants to do and even said it.

"Liberation Theology was bolstered in 1968 at the Second Latin American Bishops Conference which met in Medellin, Colombia. The idea was to study the Bible and to fight for social justice in Christian (Catholic) communities. Since the only governmental model for the redistribution of the wealth in a South American country was a Marxist model, the redistribution of wealth to raise the economic standards of the poor in South America took on a definite Marxist flavor. Since those who had money were very reluctant to part with it in any wealth redistribution model, the use of a populist (read poor) revolt was encouraged by those who worked most closely with the poor. As a result, the Liberation Theology model was mired in Marxist dogma and revolutionary causes."

Guess Repubs need to keep their defense contractor buddies happy, you know the ones that charge the US outrageous costs, and then go on to not do the job, or do it poorly.

And how are they going to pay for this....cut Medicaid, cut federal programs for the poor, cut federal retirement benefits. As usual for the GOP it is "to hell with avearge Americans".

Defense Budget That Breaks Spending Agreement Passed By House

WASHINGTON -- The House passed a defense budget Friday that exceeds the deal cut by Congress and President Barack Obama last summer, and that would have to be paid for with cash taken from poverty programs, health care and the federal workforce.

The National Defense Authorization Act permits $642 billion in defense spending next year. The White House has threatened to veto the bill, citing more than 30 changes to the budget it was seeking.

But the measure also adds $8 billion more than called for in the Budget Control Act that Congress agreed to last summer in exchange for raising the nation's debt limit.

"We increase the spending for defense due to the priorities that we feel are most important and the constitutional requirement we have to provide for the common defense," Armed Services Committee Chairman Buck McKeon (R-Calif.) said. "But we will cut in other areas of the budget so that we comply fully with the deficit reduction act."

Those other areas were spelled out in the broader budget plan passed last week. Written by House Budget Committee chairman Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), it would cut more than $80 billion in federal retirement benefits, nearly $50 billion from Medicaid programs and more than $36 billion from programs to feed the poor.

The defense budget bill would also spend more for certain items than the Department of Defense wants to spend, and would ignore the department's priorities. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has warned the changes could endanger security.

Among other unasked for changes, the bill keeps aging aircraft and ships the military wants to phase out, keeps the Army and Marines at larger force levels and orders construction of missile defenses.

If you look at a $642 billion defense budget, it represents 17.8% of the federal budget. this also represents only 4.14% of the GDP. When you consider that the national defense is the one of the modern functions that is required by the Constitution. This is not an outrageous expense.

And you are wrong "fiesty", the mainstream media "played up" an ad proposed by a "super-pac" in which Rev. Wright was "revisited", there has no actual ad been made. The "biggest blunder" Romneys campaign made was not going forward with the idea. I wish someone on the left or right for that matter would explain to me by simply stating FACTS is racist? Rev. Wright screamed anti-white and anti-American slurs, Obama sat in that church for years listening to the rants, even calling Rev. Wright as his "mentor", please tell me why it would be "racist" for an ad to remind America these FACTS? The DNC has no problem digging up "hit-pieces" from Romney's past, from 50 years ago, and there is nothing wrong with that. So lets look at the facts at why "vetting" Romneys past is okay, but vetting Obama is "racist", oh I know Obama is "black", oh I get it now that explains everything....NOT! This is the mistake that was made in 2008, ignoring the TRUTHS about Obamas past and not VETTING him, all out of fear of the word "racist".

Like all evil in the world, it begins with a lie. A lie that a group of elites can set up a socialist utopia without guns. A lie that one group is smarter, wiser, morally superior to all others—narcissists, in other words. A lie that a group of elites create their own morality—psychopaths, we call them.

The lie that began this road of destruction and death was simply that the Mexican drug cartels get most of their weapons from American gun dealers. Ninety percent, to quote our Commander-in-Chief. Of course this number was a fantasy. But fantasies can become realities with some creativity. Simply encourage American gun dealers to sell to drug cartel front men with the lie that the weapons would be tracked and intercepted. Then let them walk into Mexico. What's a couple dead Americans, a few hundred Mexicans dead in order to achieve a socialist utopia without guns? For narcissists, socialists, and psychopaths—nothing.

Although the media would love to present Barack Obama as seven times brainier than George W. Bush, Byron Tau of Politico reports "President Obama's 2012 State of the Union address again rated at an 8th grade comprehension level on the Flesch-Kincaid readability test — the third lowest score of any State of the Union address since 1934."

Eric Ostermeier of the University of Minnesota's Smart Politics initiative conducted an analysis on the last 70 State of the Union addresses and found that President Obama's three addresses have the lowest grade average of any modern president. (Obama came in 13th out of 13; George W. Bush was at number eight.)

Ostermeier reports "each of Obama's three addresses are among only seven of 70 in the modern era that were written shy of a 9th grade level, and among the six that have averaged less than 17 words per sentence. Obama's 2012 and 2010 addresses averaged 16.6 words per sentence with his 2011 address coming in at 16.8."

He said "The Flesch-Kincaid test is designed to assess the readability level of written text, with a formula that translates the score to a U.S. grade level. Longer sentences and sentences utilizing words with more syllables produce higher scores. Shorter sentences and sentences incorporating more monosyllabic words yield lower scores,"

                              Tau added:

"Obama's average grade-level score of 8.4 is more than two grades lower than the 10.7 grade average for the other 67 addresses written by his 12 predecessors," they conclude...

Obama's use of simple language is in part a reflection of his audience: the American voter in an election year. And it's part of a larger trend in simpler State of the Union language as the speech as transitioned from a simple address to Congress into a prime-time televised event.

Knowing our media elite, they would process this information and then praise Obama for talking down to the people, just as Time's Michael Kramer did for Bill Clinton in 1992: Clinton seemed instinctively to know how to put the hay down where the goats were."

Conservative song costs coach his job

A Tennessee middle school football coach is looking to the future after his termination for alleged political incorrectness.

Twenty-six-year-old Bryan Glover is a Christian who co-wrote a song called "When You're Holding a Hammer, Everything Looks Like a Nail," which takes a dig at the current administration and what he believes to be the wrong moves for the U.S. He sent a link to his song to everyone in his personal e-mail inbox, which included parents from Grassland Middle School, where he coached football.

"An hour-and-a-half after sending out the e-mail, I got the phone call from the head coach saying that he had had complaints from parents; he was told to fire me," the former coach accounts.

He notes that he was surprised by the allegations against him.

"When the coach first called me, he said his phone was blown up with parents saying that I was being politically incorrect -- quote, unquote -- if you will, and that some of them were even reading into racial overtones in the song," Glover explains.

But he points out that the lyrics make no direct or indirect reference to race.

A number of supportive parents met with the principal and asked for reinstatement, but the school district is remaining firm. The Williamson County superintendent refuses to say why the coach was fired, but he speculates that it could be an issue of how he obtained the parents' e-mail addresses -- even though the e-mail was sent from his personal account.

Meanwhile, Glover says he has read the Constitution and believes he is standing on firm ground because of the provision for free speech.
