Biden on WV's vote for felon: 'They're frustrated. They're angry.'

Vice President Joe Biden stayed mostly on message during a two-day swing in eastern Ohio this week, but one comment made to a local TV news station may have earned him some rolls of the eye at Obama campaign headquarters in Chicago.

In an interview yesterday with WTOV-TV, NBC's Steubenville-Wheeling affiliate, Biden said that he doesn't "blame people" for voting against Barack Obama in West Virginia's Democratic primary earlier this month, when an incarcerated felon won about four in 10 votes against the sitting president.

"Look, I come from a household where whenever there's a recession, somebody around my grandpop or my dad's table lost their job - a brother, a sister, a friend, a neighbor," he said.  When you're outta work, man, it's a depression. And a lot of people are still hurt because of this God-awful recession we inherited that cost 8.4 million jobs before we could really get going. And so I don't blame people. They're frustrated. They're angry."

Biden quickly pivoted to make the case that the administration's economic values would prevail nationwide over Mitt Romney's in the general election.

"At the end of the day they're going to decide is the way back to their employment, is the way back to being able to have a job and raise a family, is it under the value set and the ideas of Romney? Or is it under ours? And we feel confident we'll do just fine. "

Keith Judd, also known as Prisoner 11593-051, is serving a sentence at the Beaumont Federal Correctional Institution in Texas for making threats at the University of New Mexico. He makes occasional cameos on state ballots and won about 40 percent of the vote in West Virginia's May 8 primary, embarrassing national Democrats and highlighting Obama's challenges in coal country.

Finally this guy said something I agree with!!!!!!

I'm sure the Big "O" is thrilled to know Good Old Joe agrees that people could vote for a felon over him.

I don't see what Joe said that was so damaging, except he was being too kind. This felon gets on the ballot all the time, and 40% fell for it.

This brings up the the ABO mentality, and proved that just voting for ABO could result in ending up with a damn felon. So get your heads out of your arse and don't just support someone blindly because s/he has an "R' next to his/her name.

And I love the way they say they inherited this God-awful recession that costs 8.4 million jobs. The only people that I saw get anything out of this administration were corporations and multinational banks that received bailouts, green energy companies and companies that invest in green energy. Bush wasn't very good fiscally, but no one in this administration could pass a high school economics course. These people prove that you can be very well educated and still know nothing.

Responding/ Affirming John 2387.....

Since the Congress was controlled by the Democrats in 2007-2008, I guess what Obama/Biden inherited was the result of the Democrat's actions in Congress or the Democrat's ineptness in being able to pass legislation that would have changed the direction of the economy. It always mystifies me that the Dems fail to mention this point when they stress that they inherited a big mess.

Tom the mystified -- At least you admit to being mystified. The Dems had a filibuster proof super majority for about 7 months from the time Al Franken was confirmed to the time of Ted Kennedy's passing. It can be argued they should have focused on jobs more than cap and trade, or even ACA.

However, what is the Republican's excuse for having a majority during most of the eight years of Dubya, and not balancing the budget? Come on, stop with the selective amnesia or trying to rewrite history.

What you might want to understand here is that Reid hasn't passed a budget in over THREE years, in order to balance one, you first must have one True! By the way balancing it isn't a Constitutional mandate, having it IS!

TruePatriot- There is a differance between haveing a majorty and a Veto Proof Majority. Simple majortys can not pass much, but a Veto Proof Democrat (2009-2010) could pass anything they wanted (and did). So don't equate them as being the same.

The seven months (back in 07/08) would be enough to pass quite a few bills. But they had enough votes plus the (so called Indepenants that voted with them most of the time) to tip the scales for bills to pass the bills they wanted, like the bills forcing the banks to lend on home mortgages, or face lawsuits from the govenment, on home loans from people who could not afford them.

Who knows? Maybe if Massey Energy's successor company (Alpha Natural Resources) -- just for one example -- would invest a little of the massive amounts of money it makes from circumventing safety regulations and the money it spends settling criminal complaints on developing alternative energy sources, they could have it both ways.

The restrictions put on coal plants are designed to put them out of business and the president admitted this publicly. Do you think it is that simple to just stop using coal, flip a switch and change to gas? Does WV have anywhere near as much gas available as coal? Would getting gas from another state help employment in WV?

The best solution to our energy problems is algae based biodiesel. The technology is there, contrary to popular talkign points about there being no substitute for oil,. They've converted this algae based biofuel into rocket propellant that gives 94% of the thrust of current rocket fuels, and it could easily be put to use in other avenues.

What this would require is a complete shift of our energy economy, which would require massive investments to move the entire country away from an Oil base. However, there would be advantages to moving to this type of energy supply if done properly.

          1) can build production facilities anywhere, and i would promote a model that made smaller plants in each community. This would prevent natural disasters from affecting our overall energy supply, as each facility could ramp up production and send that surplus to the affected areas. This would also prevent any sort of terrorist attack on production facilities from crippling the country.

          2) creates an entirely new industry, and therefore new jobs. because each production facility would be local, these jobs would be permanent and could provide stability in the local economy. You would also have to build the facilities, and there are new construction and maintenance jobs that would be required.

          3) The cost of good would decrease with an abundant energy supply that won't have to be transported long distances except when responding to emergencies. Right now the costs of all goods and services are a slave to the price of gasoline. If we can eliminate that cost, the cost of goods and services can be reduced, easing the burden on working families that is currently dragging them down.

          4) The technology could be exported, and can be generated and used anywhere.

Where there is a will, there is a way. Unfortunately, the will is to keep us as slaves to oil in order to continue making record profits on a dying resource.

Of course, another option to reduce the impact of coal burning on the environment would be to re-forest the North American continent. Looking at deforestation maps from the 1800 - modern day show that about half of our forests have been removed, and this hampers the ability of the ecosystem to fix itself. A reforestation project would allow the earth more capacity to counter polluting effects, and would cause our nation to lead by example in the fight against deforestation of the tropical rainforests in South America.

Options are out there, it is just up to elected officials to put aside the way things have been, and try to move us forward into the 21st century.

Last time I saw Joe Biden speak in person was last November on Veteran's Day on the steps of the county courthouse here in Media, PA - part of the same government complex that at last count had eight buildings operating under solar power and was working on the ninth:

"Media Powers Up With Sunshine-Nine Solar Arrays and Counting…With the completion of solar photovoltaic systems at the Media Highway Department Garage and the Media Youth Center in 2010, the Borough now has solar on eight municipal buildings and has partnered with Delaware County to install a ninth array on a courthouse building.

Since 2004, when the first array was mounted on the Armory building (now the site of Trader Joe's and the
PA Veterans Museum), Media solar arrays have produced over 130,000 kWh of clean, renewable energy. Now, with a capacity of 41 kW, the Media Borough solar arrays can generate nearly 45,000 kWh per year, saving about $5,500 annually as well as CO2 emissions equivalent to 3,635 gallons of gas consumed.

Look for new solar arrays on other Media roofs as well - several Media businesses and homes have also recently seized the opportunity to go solar and more are planned. Kathleen McGinty, former head of the PA Department of Environmental Protection, once dubbed Media Borough the "Solar Capital of PA"-we are keeping a firm grip on the title!"

Anna Holly Molly, It took many decades for cars and airplanes to replace horses, but keep in mind that those workers had to move from horse and carriage to cars and more jobs where created to maintain the cars. Our president wants to replace coal, oil and other fossil oils now or as soon as possible before the alternatives are usable. Let's not forget the money lost on Solindra and other investments his administration has made with our money. Mr. Biden should keep his high IQ mouth shot and let me dream my dream.

          Tazlaran,

With the small facilities scattered throughout the county/world, would you not lose economy of scale? Your ideas may come to fruition when the economy can afford the massive upfront costs. Today, however, like it or not, we apparently borrow $.40 of each dollar we spend. Once we can put aside 40% of the Federal revenues (due to the robust health of the U.S. economy), we might be able to implement your strategy. Having the technology does not necessarily equate to having a cost-effective technology. We have the technology to put humans on the moon. Yet, it is not practical to send everyone there for a weekend of "weightless frolicking".

Actually the objective is to make the coal industry pay for the real costs of its product, or eliminate those costs which it is not currently paying for (pollution, environmental and health damages.)

Just as the modern electrical and oil industries have been assisted with government money, so too the next phase of our energy business will be assisted.

I still don't understand why this is an issue, and why it has not been debunked by the MSM.

In a state that is supposed to go "Red" for Romney this fall, Obama received around 30,000 more votes than Romney. The convicted felon almost had as many votes as Romney! (around a 3,000 vote difference)

So if this would have been the general election, Romney would have lost to Obama and almost lost to a convicted felon.

The only logical answer for these kind of results is in an open primary a lot of Republicans crossed-over and voted for the felon to try and embarass Obama.

TN & Job1 -- You know nothing about WV politics. WV was a blue state up until Gore ran. It is still a blue state for every other office. Democrats out number Republicans 4 to 1 in WV. WV primaries are closed primaries so there are no crossovers. Democrats hold 75 percent of state, county and local offices. These are moderate Democrats like Sen. Joe Manchin (who will be the future of the Democrat party if it is smart -- in fact he is a Dem I could vote for) and represent a heavy interest in coal, oil and natural gas. There were several contested democrat primaries throughout the state which would account for the heavy democrat turn out and the protest vote against a very unpopular president/policies.

I hope this helps you understand a bit more about WV -- where I was born and raised.

A little fact for you folks on the Right: The Republicans is Congress aren't as honest as you think.

A Guide to Recognizing Your Budget Stunts

But it'll pass, and it'll pass after two budget stunts failed miserably. Those stunts:

            - Rep. Mick Mulvaney, who defeated Budget chairman John Spratt for his seat, introduced an amendment consisting of the numbers and appropriations of Barack Obama's 2012 budget. "It's not a gimmick unless what the President sent us is the same," Mulvaney snarked. "We are voting on the President's budget. I would encourage the Democrats to embrace this landmark Democrat document and support it." (Calling a Democratic effort a "Democrat" effort is a minor swipe.)

The amendment went down 414-0, just like an identical Republican stunt in 2011 led to a unanimous defeat of an "Obama's budget" parody. "It was a caricature of the president's budget," explained Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi on Thursday, "so we voted against it."

Well the president is not as honest about the budget as you think either:

Promise of cutting the budget deficit in half is intentionally misleading:

When Obama says he will halve the deficit, he's comparing it to a 2009 deficit that is massive and far, far above the norm. It's a deficit fueled by a major recession and boosted by costly recession-fixers like the bailouts last fall and the economic stimulus package passed in February. For comparison purposes, we note that the deficit in 2008 was $459 billion (and less than half that the year before, so really, You should be able to cut that in half with a butter knife)

Although Obama's budget plan is expected to more than halve the 2009 projected deficit in four and five years out, after that, the CBO projects that deficits will begin to grow again, and significantly. The CBO's 10-year outlook predicts a deficit of $1.2 trillion in 2019.

            • Cut an unusually high deficit in half so you can claim you did it and make yourself look good... then triple it!
            • Political BS at it's best.

We are in a transitional period going from carbon based fuel to cleaner, renewable, home grown fuel sources. Properly funded, Americans have done remarkable things before and we can do it again. The interum period should see both carbon based fuels and new sources and as the old ones get depleted, power plants get old, workers retire, they are not replaced with the same old technology but with new technology. When was the last time you drove a horse and buggy to work or shopping? That was technology of the 19th Century. Carbon based energy took us from the 19th through the 20th Century but now we have techonogy that can take us beyond dirty, depletable, often foreign based carbon fuel to modern energy sources. If one looks at London near the start of the industrial revolution it was so dark during the day time that one might think it twilight all day long from the smoke from coal fired factories, power facilities and homes. That may be the desire of some but not mine. I don't want our cities to look like London of Charles Dickens but fresh, clean and the envy of the world. We are falling behind right now and if we don't get it together and fast we will be third rate in world energy.

The problem with that logic is the fact that even the Scientist involved in "Green Energy ". declare that it will take two to three decades for "Green Energy " to be able to replace 50% of our CURRENT energy demands, never mind the increased demands then!

If green energy got the trillions that have been allotted to the oil and gas industry for 60 years, we'd sure be in better shape than we are today with our reliance on the petroleum boys.

Why would 40% of West Virginia Democrats vote for a felon instead of the "leader" of their party. Maybe because they don't like where the country is going under Obama/Biden.

              1. $5T of Federal Debt in three years (U.S. Treasure Dept), after Obama labeled Bush debt ($4.9T in eight years) as a "Failure in Leadership" (Congressional Record).

              2. Unemployment over 8% for 40 months despite TRILLIONS of Economic Stimulus that only stimulated the debt. (Bureau of Labor Statistics)

              3. Unemployment would be even higher if 8 Million people had not given up finding a job over the last 3 years. (Bureau of Labor Statistics)

Bill -- Since WV is a big coal, oil and natural gas state, Obama's attacks on fossil fuels doesn't help either.

I like to read you guys post everyday. I have noticed a trend because I read both coverage of Our president and that on Mitt Romney. I did notice something today that had me rolling at my cubical. How set the Republicans sounds like I'm at home watching Fox news. (Like I said I listen and read both sides.) Something that I do like in our President. I think you guys call them trolls. I don't know. What I do know is that out of the negative I have not once read something that was actually gonna help us.............. ALL!

Make no mistake they only voted for the felon because they won't vote for a black politician here in west virginia. They didn't support him in 2008 either. This is the state that just spent $22 million dollars for top of the line enterprise cisco routers, the majority of which are being used in small public libraries that have networks consisting of 2 or 3 computers. Gotta love the ignorance in this state.

At least you know what you are getting if you vote for a convicted felon. Of course, you also know what you are getting if you support Biden, a brain dead moron.

Of course you know what you're getting with Rmoney. He spent a couple decades looting companies for every penny he could take out, firing people, outsourcing jobs to China, and selling the results off as quick as possible to the suckers. How could we not know what the Ku Korp Klan is trying to foist on us? I'll vote Obama, thanks anyway. If the Republicans wanted a choice in November, they sure wouldn't put yet another destroyer in line for the Presidency. C'mon folks, get realistic.

There is no difference between the democrats or republicans except their spending habits. They are members of the same club and the citizens are not invitees.

It is the presidential reality show to keep us entertained, so they stay in power.

They say one thing and do another and many just go along with it. It is a revolving door of the same people in and out. When there not in office, then there on K street lobbing.

Their real constitutes are Goldman sacs who fund them and their super packs, the election , votes and laws go to the highest bidder.

There super confidence sales men, the front guys.. so when the democratic administration crashes and burns in public opinion, then we elect a republican who does the same thing, then back to democrat. It is the definition of insanity.

I'm voting for Romney in 2012---but voted for Obama in 2008. I have been ashamed of that vote the minute the lLiar signed the 830 billion Omnebudsman Bill. Remember the Liar promised to go "Line by line through the Federal Budget and clean up the spending. He's going through "Line by line" all right but with Peruvian Marching Powder, not the budget. This is one tiny example of the liars actions, but it was enough for me to want "Change" ever since. Romney in 2012!

Manchin a moderate! What a joke that is. As to WV being a blue state because the state and local offices are held by Democrats, it should be remembered these are DINO officials as far as the national government is concerned. The production of coal by companies with no intention of abiding by a safety first course of action and a long history of manipulating WV working rules and regulations has resulted in thousands of WV coal workers being maimed/disabled for life. It is too bad that the citizens of that state fail to realize that they are simply "lives to be used up" in the eyes of the coal industry. Meanwhile we can only wait until the next disaster and sympathize with the families waiting for news of their loved ones. Pretty sad. The citizens of WV deserve better.

What "hope and change" Mr. President? I see none from your 3+ years where I'm standing. I know -- I HOPE that Mr. Romney will be elected so that he can CHANGE this country to be the best it can be for ALL American citizens.

Any Prisoner would be an improvment [No Matter what Party] over the clown that took Senator Byrds seat. Maybe when West Virginia starts to lose all those freebees that Byrd got for their state they will realze wha a mistake they made when the voted for this JERK that calls himself a Democrat. Hopefully the only FBI organization that they see will be the ones investigating the current Senator after the FBI moves to another location except west Virginia.

                            ED,

The vote was a reflection of the disenchantment with the President not the Senator. I guess as in most instances blame for these type of results have to be placed elsewhere. Seems like the President has even his supporters trained to deflect the problem onto someone else. Its never the Presidents fault....Bushs...big corporations..the rich and now the current Senator of WV..wow you liberals are so sad.
