2012: Romney’s up 3 in another poll

Romney’s up three points in a Mason-Dixon poll, 47%-44%. Obama has a six-point lead with women and a seven-point lead with those younger than 50. Romney leads big with men and those 50 and older, and has a six-point lead with independents. (The poll was commissioned by Ron Sachs Communications of Tallahassee to focus on social media.)

Charlie Cook says to pay attention to some voices in analyzing the 2012 presidential race, but not the masses.

National Journal compares Obama’s and Romney’s world views: “America’s destiny is to lead the world, Romney said, not be one of several equally balanced global powers, and fulfilling that destiny rests on restoring the United States’ military preeminence and resolutely confronting rivals. … Of course, the danger of such an assertive foreign policy is that it will remind American voters not of Ronald Reagan but of George W. Bush.”

In fact: “Many of the neoconservatives and hawks who held sway in Bush’s first term and championed the Iraq war, and who continue to argue for a more assertive American leadership that confronts adversaries militarily and actively supports democratic revolutions, have signed on to advise the Romney campaign. The election campaign will help determine whether that vision of a more unilateral, values-based foreign policy and a muscular brand of U.S. leadership still sells in a country wearied by a decade of war and years of economic upheaval.”

We hardly knew ye… “Their motto was: ‘Let’s Make History!’ They didn’t. After spending $35 million trying to launch a centrist, third-party presidential candidate, Americans Elect is giving up the quest—without a candidate,” the Wall Street Journal writes, adding, “Thursday, the group said it was throwing in the towel. ‘The primary process for the Americans Elect nomination has come to an end,’ the group said in a statement.

Keep whistling past the graveyard, libs. Obama is toast. No incumbent is going to get re-elected in an economy as bad as this. Especially, a socialist like Obama. Obama is a one-termer, like his mentor, Jimmuh Carter.

Romney will win if the 1% have anything to say about it, and we all know they have the millions to blanket the airwaves from now till November with attack ads.

But imagine waking up to a President Romney. Will jobs immediately appear? Will healthcare be affordable? Will the environment remain protected? Will the push for alternative energy continue? Will headlines in European papers once again say "How can 59 million peoeple be so stupid?"

I can tell you, a President Romney would mean a return to "muscular" foreign policy, the same attitude that lead us into Iraq/Afghanistan. A President Romney would mean the privatization of Social Security, cuts to education, policing and healthcare, more homeless people and crime.

But the 1% would keep their tax cuts, their protections, and their license to gamble knowing the government will bail them out, and they will keep their bonuses for failure.

Mo, Four more years of massive annual increases in the national debt is NOT leadership.

Has this administration, in its fourth year now, passed the FIRST budget yet ? Geez, with our national debt around $16 trillion and rising, a real leader might do something about it. Obama's answer is to spend more money we don't have. Debt service is now consuming over 40% of every U.S. tax dollar.

You can only kick the can down the road so many times ....

Change back to bush policy. because I don't hear no new ideas. just the same Regurgitation of the same policy. cut tax for the rich who are the job creator (still waiting for the jobs, had tax cuts for the last ten years. maybe I need glass that way I will see them better) if feel something trickling down but its not jobs. do a way with regulation (so wall street can do what they want, charge what they want because they work for their money. get rid of government jobs i.e teachers, policeman, firefighters, nurse.(because of course they don't work for their money, they are getting to much money and besides they don't contribute to the economy. (sarcasm). Yes this is the change we need.

Jim President Obama's leadership has brought us out of where you tea people Koch republicans took us with your massive spending on the Bush tax cuts, two unfunded wars and a massive tax give away to pharmaceutical companies all unpaid for and on borrowed money (aka adding massive debt to our country). Four more years of Obama/Biden. Leadership that works.

s.harris - You are talking about the Bush/Obama tax cuts I assume, and the payroll tax cuts signed by Obama both which expire at the end of this year.

As for your rant about teachers, policemen, firefighters, nurses, it is not the federal governments responsibility to pay for local policemen, firefighters, teachers and nurses, that is the responsibility of the States, counties, cities and school districts. All have the right to raise taxes to meet their needs. If the people want more safety personnel they will vote to increase taxes, but I believe what most people want first is a cut in wasteful spending, runaway public pensions, and better use of the current taxes before asking for more.

MO, Remember Obama, who promised he would veto any extension of the Bush tax cuts, signed them into law for another year, so he now owns them. As for the two wars, they were funded BTW, Obama has continued and extended them, for instance Afghanistan where he flew there to sign an agreement that we would continue to provide funds for the Afghanistan government until at least 2024.

If you remember the only reason obama agreed to extend them is because the republican where not going to vote on anything else and let everything else fall by the waste side. for instance middle class tax cuts. the republican said if the top 1 percent couldn't get a tax cut then nobody was going to get a tax cut.

Yes he did extend the our stay which I do not agree with. but he did end the Iraq war.

How is working for your pension asking for more. People who risk and save lives and educate our young are not asking for a handout. they work and contribute to the economy and what ever they earn basically goes back out into the economy.

s harris - Your reply is not accurate in that the reason given was because of the cut off of unemployment benefits, it had nothing to do with other votes. Obama caved after saying he would veto any extension of the Bush tax cuts.

He did not end the war in Iraq. The American troops were removed from Iraq in accordance with the SOFA between President Bush and the Iraqi Government. Obama requested we keep several thousand Americans in Iraq but was rejected by the Iraqi Government.

Again I have nothing against decent pay for teachers, firefighters (I retired from the military & the local fire department), and police. These are not federal issues and should be the complete responsibility of the state, county and local districts. They all have the power to raise taxes. The Federal Government is broke, we are deeply in debt, what part of that don't you understand.

NO NO NO America's destiny is not to be the World Cop. First of all, we are not smart enough to know what is best for the various countries around the world. Secondly, nobody has invited us to stock our nose into other nations business.

I see Conservative chatter in this venue extolling the vision of the Founding Fathers. George Washington cautioned the the US should not be entangled in foreign relationships unless they provided a clear benefit. He believed that our international presence should be based on commercial advantage.

This is a clear election choice, do we really want to be perceived as the bully on the world beat or do we want to be a responsible partner in world affairs?

These NEO-Cons need to be buried once and for all.

WE NEED ANOTHER WAR LIKE WE NEED...

Romney the bully is no different than any fascist leader, conquer and controll. he started by leading gangs of bullies in high school, then leading bain bully gain, destroying peoples lives while robbing the government, and now he will bully his way, wherever he is told, into so many countries, controlling the world.

every leader in the world should be afraid of romney, every parent in this country should be afraid of romney, for he will need the draft to institute this enormous military build up, and it certainly will not be his kids.

every senior citizen should be afraid of romney, drop their racial indifferences with obama, and worry about their health care and the future of their grandchildren.

these, my friends, are the facts and the only facts.

I can't imagine how Romney thinks saber rattling will win him an election. Americans have plainly had enough of war. It is better to rebuild infrastructure which will add fuel to the economy on so many levels. When we as a nation spend money, it should not only benefit "defense" contractors and businesses in the vicinity of a military base. Put Americans back to work! Rebuild America!

President has a campaign strategy of "divide and conquer",

That statement is like the kettle calling the tea pot black. Also, this whole national debt crisis is not the fault of the President. Many have a hand in this.

You can’t cut spending and lower taxes, it just doesn’t work. It never has and it never will.

    #4.3 - Fri May 18, 2012 11:31 AM EDT

Please tell me where I have advocated lowering taxes ... I must have missed that statement.

If Obama were to raise taxes like he wants, it would be a mere drop in the bucket toward the deficits he is racking up under his "no budget" philosophy of fiscal management.

I will agree that many have had a hand in the national debt crisis. What we need, however, are realistic ideas for getting this under control. Raising taxes on the "1%" will not get it done. The numbers do not crunch.

    #4.4 - Fri May 18, 2012 11:40 AM EDT

And cutting spending will not do it either. However, raising revenue is a good start. Put the tax rates back to Clinton era rates for a good start. Then spend to rebuild the nation and put people back to work. That plan will work.

With more people working in better paying jobs, the tax base will get larger and the debt will be reduced.

We have to remember that two-thirds of our debt is from 2001-2008 and still adding to our debt. These 2 big tax cuts, and 2 wars in which neither were being paid for in full, have crushed us.

You just can't cut your way out. Bottom line is we all have to pay.

    #4.5 - Fri May 18, 2012 12:06 PM EDT

So you want to raise taxes on ALL taxpayers at this time ... while the economy still sucks and there is virtually NO job growth ! That would kill any semblance of a recovery.

Oh, you DO REALIZE don't you .... that the Bush Tax Cuts lowered taxes on ALL who were paying taxes don't you ? It also curtailed exemptions of "the rich" so I guess you would give those back under Clinton rates.

Our country has a massive spending problem. You start by addressing that.

Deficit reduction is already programmed. Before any new Administration takes office the Bush jr. tax cuts expire and spending cuts affecting social programs and defense budgets kick in.

Neither politician has to do anything to begin the process of deficit and debt reduction. Why would we want anything different than what we are scheduled to get if we are serious about fiscal responsibility.

You must not have studied much history Job1... until the Liberal Socialist machine took over in the early 1900's, there was no income tax, and low spending. And we were prosperous. Booming even. Sure there were problems, but not the looming bankruptcy facing us now. The answer to your question is: cut everywhere... the spending ought to be limited to just the tax revenue that's coming in... if necessary cut every single line item (yes even defense) by the same % to get the overall expenditure down to incoming revenue. It's so simple even a Liberal could do it... and everyone would feel the same pain.

Job1, well I don't wish bad to any president cause in the end it will affect all of us, but Obama had his chance he had the senate the house passed every bill he wanted all of these shovel ready Jobs did not happen, I mean unemployment is more than the 8% that they claim cause they don't count the people who ran out of the Unemployment benefits, I have two friends who ran out of unemployment benefits, plus I got a few friends and family members who are under employed part time workers, bottom line our deficit sucks, believe me I was all hyped up when Obama got elected the stimulus and all that. Obama trying to have peace talks with the Muslim Brotherhood is just not right, it is clear that Muslims won't stop until Islam rules all the world so talking with them is just a waste of time and money.

Yeah, go ahead and vote for Romney, girls look cute in those prarie getups that the Mormons love, and never mind that the economic policies he is advocating will nuclear blast our economy out of existence once all those Bank of America home mortgage deriviatives go south as a lack of government spending sends the economy back into another recession.

What I don't understand is why no one is talking about the 55 Trillion Dollar liability we are carrying from the transfer of Merrill Lynch's risky derivative accounts onto Bank of America's FDIC insured ledger. This occured last October, yet it hasn't really become part of the political debate on the economy. We're 16 Trillion in the hole at this moment, do you think 55 trillion more will hurt us? Romeny and the republicans want to cut government, cut social programs, maintain the military budget, keep the tax cuts, and return to the deregulated days of 2007. Cuting government jobs and spending at a time when people are struggling to make their mortgage payments seem to me a curious economic strategy considering the domino effect more foreclosures will have on the economy is those derivative become absolutely worthless.

This is another example of how the Fed and the cronies on Wall Street are rigging the system. The Fed insisted on the transfer of these assets over the objections of the FDIC.

All I can say is that this must of been how the Roman Empire thought of itself somewhere in the Fourth Century. We are deluded fools. Exactly what American Empire do we need and why would we ever elect someone who preaches it? Obama has never said that America is not the greatest country, nor has he ever said that America shouldn't be an example and a leader for the rest of the world. But he approaches that by making Americans stronger and making sure all Americans have the opportunities to succeed. Romney is just warmed over McKinley-Reagan jingoism. I'd like to think we are smarter now, but if anything W. Bush taught us that there is a deeply demented strain of patriotism suffered by a large part of our population.
