Walker opens up lead over Barrett in Wisconsin recall

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker has opened up a 6-point lead over Democratic challenger Tom Barrett ahead of a closely-watched June 5 recall election.

Fifty percent of Wisconsin's likely voters said in a Marquette Law School Poll that they would support retaining Walker versus 44 percent of likely voters who said they would instead elect Barrett, Walker's challenger in the 2010 general election who will again face Walker after having won last week's Democratic primary.

The poll would seem to reflect what had been an anecdotal sense that Walker has opened up an advantage in the few weeks before the recall election.

A target of Democrats and organized labor since pushing a dramatic reform of collective bargaining rights for public employees through the Wisconsin state legislature, Walker has raised millions more than his challengers in order to fend off the recall effort.

If Walker were to win, it would be a symbolic victory not only for his efforts to curb labor rights, but also for a series of other Republican governors who have embarked upon the same path. It would also be a disappointing setback for organized labor.

It could also help put Wisconsin in play for this fall's general election between Mitt Romney and President Obama.

Among likely Wisconsin voters, Obama and Romney were tied at 46 percent in a hypothetical November matchup.

A poll preceding the Democratic primary in Wisconsin had showed Barrett and Walker virtually tied in the gubernatorial recall, suggesting that the tide might have turned back toward Walker in the weeks since then.

The Republican governor had a 50 percent approval rating, according to the most recent Marquette poll, versus 46 percent of Wisconsinites who disapporove of the way he is handling his job.

The remainder of the recall campaign is still expected to be a hard-fought campaign, with millions in ads sponsored by outside groups on both sides. But reflecting the stakes of the race, and prevailing sentiment in Washington, state Democrats had to complain publicly about a lack of support from the Democratic National Committee before eliciting a promise to help raise funds.

The Marquette Law School poll, conducted May 9-12, has a 4.1 percent margin of error for the sample of likely voters.

I wonder if the right will even admit their stupidity and their complicity in allowing the corporate interests to destroy the wages and the benefits of the working class? When their own families are earning less for their work efforts, will they try to blame the union or the Dems? Anger is building and I hope the right understands that their lack of concern for the rights of the working class is going to come back and hit them hard and they will not be able to deflect the blame on others any longer. Being stupid or indifferent is not an acceptable excuse.

it's simple math folks.

keep paying union workers more than they are worth and you will fail.

it's just that simple.

it is time to make laws that keep employees from unionizing.

unions have helped to destroy everything good about this country.

We had an election here and Walker won, that is why we have elections. This recall has been nothing but a waste of money. Pension reform for public employees has been long over due and the unions refused to even consider it. Living in Wisconsin I have never seen a more screwed up state in my life and my kids went to MPS and while there are some great teachers the unions are the biggest impediment to reform and consequently it is one of the worst school systems in the US. If I am not sure between 2 candidates I have always voted Democrat and I will for national offices but in WI after the state senate ran away to Illinois to stop bills and this recall I will never vote again for a democrat in this state. The unions have hijacked the Democratic party here in WI, just like the Christian Taliban hijacked the national republican party.

this just shows you how bad the dems and obama are going to be landslided this november, if someone as hated as walker can get 50% of the vote in a lib state like wisconsin, the gop will trash the dems across the country, the dem party will just be some small entity can pretty much ignore in both the house in the senate with a super majority gop far right senate, fdrs entitlements will finally end

Out of all of the posts authored by you in the past Troll, I commend you for posting the "obvious". Though your inaccuracy of Walker being "hated" is over stated. Hated by who, liberals? And why, because public service workers were being asked in Wisconsin to contribute to their own pension, kinda like the rest of us have to do? And can we ever forget the "rabid angry faces" and destruction ( $1 million) of Wisconsin's capital, damages caused by public service workers(now reminiscent of damages caused by OWS). To "remind" America, the RNC needs to run ads with archive footage of public service workers and OWS destroying public property, with the title "this is the faces of the Democrat Party").Your damned right America is tired of the "entitlement mentality" of the LEFT. Proof is seen in this pathetic attempt to have Scott Walker re-called, the people of Wisconsin voted him into office to rid the State of union "leeches". And when the public service workers were asked to contribute to their OWN pension plan, they acted like spoiled brats(kinda makes you wonder whose teaching your children what in that State, huh?). The GOP doesn't have to "trash" Dems Troll, they do that just fine on their own.

Like I said, will the right ever take any responsibility for supporting a man who is bought and does the business of the corporate interests? As the wages and worker's rights disappear, will those who keep backing Walker ever take responsibility for their stupidity?

They should be on 401ks like the rest of us~! Kudo's to the good people of Wisconsin who have withstood the onslaught of the Union Thugs and their dues monies trying to corrupt the election process. Give em HELL Walker!

I guess some things are just unexplainable. Why in the world would someone in Wisconsin vote for Walker? Anybody see the video with one of his billionaire supporters who wants favors from him? Divide and conquer were his words. He ran on creating jobs.....Wisconsin has lost jobs since he took office. I could go on and on. What could these people be thinking? Their hatred for unions will be their downfall in the end. And I hope every democrat says I told you so.

If the Wisconsonians are stupid enough to vote for Walker then they deserve what they get. It's pretty much over for this country anyway since the Republicans stole all the money. It won't be long before people will think they're in high cotton when they get a bowl of rice for a day's work. THEN maybe the corporations will stop whining about how we're just not "competitive" enough with China and other Communist slave nations.
