Subscribe to RSSSpeaking in Iowa, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney attacks President Obama on his stimulus package, bailouts, Obamacare, and the growing national debt.
DES MOINES -- Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney returned to Iowa on Tuesday, hammering President Obama for feeding a "debt and spending inferno," and warning of the dangers of a "nightmare mortgage" of debt that could swamp generations of Americans if tough decisions can't be made to cut government spending.
"This debt is America's nightmare mortgage. It's adjustable, no-money down, and assigned to our children," Romney said. "And politicians have been trying to hide the truth about this nightmare mortgage for years -- just like liar-loans. This is not just bad economics; it is morally wrong and we must stop it."
Appearing in the Hawkeye state for the first time since the Jan. 3 caucuses -- where Romney was briefly declared the winner before revised results showed Rick Santorum had won -- Romney stood in the very same ballroom in which he held his caucus night party and used stark imagery to warn of a debt and spending crisis he claimed was sweeping across the country like a prairie fire.
"The people of Iowa and America have watched President Obama nearly four years now. Much of that time, with Congress controlled by his own party. And rather than putting out that spending fire, he’s been feeding it. He has spent more and borrowed more," Romney said. "The time has come for a president, a leader, who will lead. I will lead us out of this debt and spending inferno. We will stop borrowing unfathomable sums of money we can’t even imagine from foreign countries we’re never even going to visit. I will work with you to make sure we put out this spending and borrowing fire."
The former Massachusetts governor's speech was directed toward driving a wedge between President Obama and independent voters by labeling the president yet again as an "old liberal," to the left of more centrist "new Democrats" like former President Clinton.
"Even a former McGovern campaign worker like President Clinton was signaling to his own party that Democrats should no longer try to govern by proposing a new program for every problem. President Obama tucked away the Clinton doctrine in his large drawer of discarded ideas, along with transparency and bipartisanship," Romney said in prepared remarks. (In his actual speech, Romney inadvertently said "McCain" instead of McGovern.). "It’s enough to make you wonder if maybe it was a personal beef with the Clintons. But probably that -– it runs much deeper than that."
"What President Obama is doing is not bold; it's old. As president, I will make the federal government simpler, smaller, smarter," Romney said, summing up his arguments.
But while Romney's speech today touched on entitlement reform and his oft-repeated pledge to cut programs, it glossed over how Romney would pay for his 20 percent across-the-board tax cuts, or his plans to expand military spending without creating even more debt, upon which President Obama's campaign quickly seized.
"While President Obama has put forward a plan to reduce the national debt by more than $4 trillion over the next decade, Mitt Romney refuses to say what spending cuts or tax increases he’d make to cover the cost of giving $5 trillion in tax breaks to the wealthiest Americans," Obama campaign spokeswoman Lis Smith said in a statement. "Mitt Romney simply wants to return to the same policies that caused the crisis and weakened the middle class: budget-busting tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans and letting Wall Street write its own rules. Loading the country up with debt while giving tax breaks to the wealthy—America can’t afford Romney Economics.”
The focus on debt and spending -- not job-creating and economic growth more broadly -- was notable here in a state with an unemployment rate of 5.2 percent, nearly three percentage points better than the national average and near full employment. For Romney to return Iowa to the Republican column in November, he'll have to overcome not just an economy that has comparatively thrived in the last four years, but also a significant organizational advantage to the Obama campaign, which boasts eight offices in the state -- including one here in Des Moines in the same location Romney used as his Iowa campaign headquarters during the caucuses.
"The Romney campaign will aggressively compete across Iowa and together with the Republican Party, we will have a bigger presence in Iowa than any previous Republican candidate for President," Romney spokesperson Rick Gorka said in a statement.
Despite the apocalyptic imagery of flames and nightmares, there was some levity in Romney's speech. Employing a metaphor for the inefficiencies and cronyism he sees in Washington DC, Romney, who once said President Obama was employing a "pay phone strategy" in a "smart phone world" described an imaginary scenario in which the federal government was the sole provider of cell phones in America.
"First of all, they'd still be under review, alright, you'd be listening to hearings in Congress on cell phones. When they were finally approved, the contract to make them would go to an Obama donor. And of course they'd come out looking about the size of a shoe, with a collapsible solar panel attached to power it," Romney joked. "And of course campaign donors would be lining up see who could get appointed to be the App-Czar, alright."

I had the great displeasure of actually seeing Willard's speech!
The thing that stood out most for me was him using a *gasp* teleprompter to lie through his teeth!
If this speech is any indication of how Willard plans on running his campaign entirely on lies & deceit, us liberals cannot take our eye off the ball for one second!

On Tuesday, when Obama signed the bill into law, he did not hold a public signing ceremony with Terry’s family. The announcement that Obama had signed the memorial act into law was stuffed in the middle of a White House press release packed with other announcements not relevant to Terry.
The press release contained no quote from Obama or from White House press secretary Jay Carney about Terry.

I'm still waiting for some brave journalist to ask Romney to say what those "reports" were he claimed read that said Obama was conspiring to establish a new religion of "secularism" in his second term. Political reporters are such cowards that they're afraid to expose blatant lies like that one Romney told. I'm not sure the romney has a base. Evangelicals think he's a member of a cult, the right wingnuts think he's a moderate and Ron Paul seems to be taking more than half the delegates in lots of states. The only one who seems to have less of a base is Gingrich.

Comparing Romney comments with Obama's, it is painfully clear that Romney actually knows how to manage budgets and spending; while Obama is still fumbling around.
Unfortunately, Mitt the Barber missed the opportunity to inform Iowan's that the federal subsidy for ethanol mixed into gasoline needs to end. It is a misguided obsolete technology that artificially diverts agricultural resources to corn.

In this instance, the right way to change bad weather is to fire Willard, the bad weather man. America has been going into and out of debt since the building of the Erie Canal under President john Adams. Jefferson purchased enough land in France's Louisiana territory to double the size of America. President Adams was a little quirky. His biggest fear about the new nation was its vulnerability to sedition. He wanted so many new laws of prevention, that he violated the very principles he originally espoused.
If he were here today, i think he would be a lot more confident in knowing that the Constitution still rules 220 years later. But, I would still like to see his reaction to the fact that what he labeled sedition has been embedded for a quarter of a century as Republican political strategy. To fear, criticize, blame, and hate what Lincoln aptly described as the government of the people, by the people and for the people, is being highly self-critical or paranoid. But, Lincoln would be depressed to see the ideology of the party he once loved and how diametrically opposed it is to his ideals.
The only thing we have to fear is elephant fiction, if you are not laughing at its corny excesses and invisible disasters. Mark Twain once said, "I have known a great many difficulties in my life, but most of them never happened."
Did you hear Mitt Romney defining “Marriage?” Did you hear him define his Mormon beliefs, as the same as yours at the Evangelical Christian College? Did you hear his fellow Mormons say that by prophets “Mitt Romney is to ride on a white horse into the White House?”
Ok you hear what you hear, do you believe what they say just because you hear it. They think you must believe it!
What you often do not hear is the truth not told.
Do you believe as the Mormons do that God created Jesus and Satan as equals and that they are brothers?
He will not let you hear the truth, he will only tell you what he wants you to believe is true.
Like the time he stated he created 100,000 jobs.
Only he didn’t tell you most of them were created in the out-sourced countries he sent them to.
Did you hear Romney denounce “Mormons’ practice of One man and many young girls?”
Did you hear Romney say, “I am sorry I was a bully in the private high school I attended?”
Did you hear Romney deny, “the forced cutting of a not outed fellow high school student for being different, for perceived to be gay.” Romney did not deny it, again the truth not told.
If Romney believes in Marriage as one man and one woman, he would have to say, “my grandfather was wrong to have left the U.S.A. as a fugitive and having had multi wives.”
If he truly believe in what he is telling you and expecting you to believe it, he would denounce the still active Mormon sects that practice polygamy, often marrying underage girls to well advance aged men. He is not going to tell you that, he is not going to tell you the truth but expects you to believe what you hear, from his surrogates, from other who have super wealth at stake, protecting their wealth interest.

If Romney believed in families he would not submit women to less than adequate health care, to less than adequate protection against abuser, to less than adequate representative of women’s rights and issues.

Let me challenges all the junior economists out there. Without using a talking point, explain exactly how the deficit (specifically Obama's share of the deficit) has harmed our current economy to a greater degree than the accumulated deficits before him? If Bush's deficits didn't cause the recession, how do Obama's deficits lead to only a tepid recovery? And since Romney was barking about how Obama's stimulus spending only saved the public sector (most to the money went directly to states and municipalities) - what was the alternative - fire the teachers, fire and police a year earlier? And explain how the money has to be paid back when most of the money in the form of Treasuries are held by everyday Americans? And since taxes haven't been raised (in fact Obama has cut taxes) why haven't the Bush cuts continued to give us prosperity? And why shouldn't the first thing be to address the deficit to reverse the Bush tax rates? What makes those rates more natural or correct than those under Reagan or Clinton?
Romney's entire campaign, no the entire Republican political narrative, is just one gigantic straw man attack.

You obviously do not understand economics, alienjon-819068, the economy is not the ocean. That is a foolish metaphor showing a distinct lack of knowledge about economics. A stimulus is exactly what is needed in a downturn, and the last one was not big enough. When the private sector can't provide it, the government must, even when it means taking on more debt. When the country is in a recession, or is trying to climb out of a recession, that is the wrong time for austerity measures. Austerity measures during a down economy only make the problem worse.
The Republican/TP Inc. party is doubling down on not doing the right thing by blocking the transportation bill that would add, literally, over a million jobs to the economy in a 3 - 6 month period. When jobs are added, demand rises, when demand rises, employment rises, when employment rises, demand rises, etc.

Romney does not want to have a real conversation about debt because he wants to increase pentagon spending by 3 times what they need. If Romney was serious about the debt he would end all the Bush tax cuts. That alone would save social security and medicare for the next 100 years.
