Paul says he'll cease campaigning in coming primaries

NBC's Mark Murray joins NewsNation to explain how Ron Paul's decision affects the 2012 campaign.

Texas Rep. Ron Paul said Monday that he'll cease campaigning in upcoming caucuses and primaries, an announcement of symbolic, if not substantive, significance.

Paul, the libertarian-minded congressman who'd sought to convert his grassroots support and fundraising prowess into electoral success, sent a letter to supporters announcing he'd stop spending money on forthcoming nominating contests.

"Moving forward, however, we will no longer spend resources campaigning in primaries in states that have not yet voted. Doing so with any hope of success would take many tens of millions of dollars we simply do not have," he said in a statement.

The announcement changes little, though, for the Paul campaign. While the candidate had continued to hold rallies in Texas and California -- at which, his campaign boasted, thousands of attendees would appear -- those events were sporadic at best. Moreover, Paul had hardly been a regular presence on the campaign trail since the earliest contents, and he had largely eschewed primaries in favor of caucuses, where his enthusiastic supporters threatened to influence the outcomes.

But Paul never won any of those caucuses, and his campaign turned its attention in recent weeks to the obscure process of delegate allocation on the state level. The Texas congressman said Monday that his team would continue in its bid to accrue delegates.

"Our campaign will continue to work in the state convention process.  We will continue to take leadership positions, win delegates, and carry a strong message to the Republican National Convention that liberty is the way of the future," he said.

Paul's endgame in pursuing delegates (affecting the platform, maybe, or even winning a spot for him or his son on the Republican ticket) is far from clear. Paul announced last year that he would not seek re-election, spurring speculation that his son, Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, who was elected in 2010, might inherit the Paul political organization.

Here is a clear case of more media manipulation to herd the sheep. They says the events Paul held in CA and TX were sporadic at best? Attendence was packed way more then any Romney event has attracted.

newsflash, being president is not akin to a rock concert. If you don't vote it doesn't matter how many people show up at your rallies. And no one, at least not enough, was voting for Paul.

Newsflash: Most people have no clue how the delegate process works. He's doing very well. Romney DOES NOT have 900 delegates.

Like most lemmings who comment on these boards..you usually comment on things you know little about (ie Ron Paul) What dont you like about his platform.

1) That we shouldnt spend money we dont have 2) That we shouldnt be borrowing from China

3) That we should follow the Constitution 4) That we shouldnt be giving away our taxpayers dollars to corrupt gov'ts

5) or that we shouldnt have our military in 128 countries in the world

Instead you make comments that he's stupid, a nut and a bad doctor. Look at our country...should be continue to follow the policies that have brought us to our current state of chaos

That's where most of we voters part ways with Paul.

Iran has had four warheads since the early 1990's which they got from one of the countries that broke away from the old Soviet Union. They just chose not to use them.

I have to agree with TheOverlord, here. It's obvious Ron Paul will never get a Republican Nomination because of his political stance. He should take his views to form a new party.

I don't think he's a nut, I think many of his common sense views are ultimately unpopular in a political stance. Also think the Republicans have kept him around this long to give balance to the garbage the rest of their party spews.

Indy, I know you meant "hear" him talk, but regardless of how many people attended his rallies, the numbers were not there to give credence to a viable candidacy. If you didn't understand that statement, then let me translate. No votes in primaries, no delegates, no presidency.

Our nations OLD PEOPLE fear freedom and liberty and will only vote for BIG GOVERNMENT players as only such people will keep supporting and expending their Social Security benefits.

In other words, Ron Paul did not make the ballot because he is not willing to sacrifice our nations young people in order to extend OLD PEOPLE benefits for a few more years like they are doing in Greece.

Our nations young deserve something other than third world poverty. Unfortunately, we live in a democracy and OLD PEOPLE have very high voter turnout.

There's no ballot yet. Romney doesn't have the delegates. Ron Paul just took many delegates in AZ this weekend. He also has the majority in Louisiana, Minnesota, Nevada, and Maine. He took a good chunk of the available in Massachusetts, but they aren't done yet. Many states don't have a final count on delegates yet.

This is from Ron Paul's senior advisor.

Doug Wead Senior advisor to the Ron Paul 2012 campaign joins Daily Paul Radio with Kurt Wallace for ‘Doug Wead ‘We are not out, We are Up!’ The fight has just begun!’ to discuss today’s email from the Ron Paul campaign and the media spin that Ron Paul has ended his campaign. Doug also explains the reasons for the campaign allocating resources to win this primary election with the delegate strategy and the need for help to fight the corruption state by state.

This is from Ron Paul himself today.

As I reflect on our 2012 Presidential campaign, I am humbled by the supporters who have worked so hard and sacrificed so much. And I am so proud of what we have accomplished. We will not stop until we have restored what once made America the greatest country in human history.

This campaign fought hard and won electoral success that the talking heads and pundits never thought possible. But, this campaign is also about more than just the 2012 election. It has been part of a quest I began 40 years ago and that so many have joined. It is about the campaign for Liberty, which has taken a tremendous leap forward in this election and will continue to grow stronger in the future until we finally win.

Those who are smart enough to do a little research know that the Rothschild family owns the central banks of Europe; controlling interest in most of the large U.S. Banks, therefore they indirectly control the Federal Reserve. They also own the Reuters and controlling interest in the New York Times. Oh and almost all of the world's sovereign debt.

Paul wants to get rid of the Federal Reserve. So, of course he is crazy, because the newspapers say so; and perhaps that explains why he can't seem to get any balanced news coverage.

The banks and their employees give ridiculous sums of money to both the Obama and Romney campaigns as well as most of the Congressional campaigns. They are the best politicians that money can buy.

And what does Paul propose we replace the Federal Reserve with? I assume a government agency? How does that help the economy? As it is, the President appoints the chairman, and the IRS audits constantly. The oversight is extraordinary, especially in the last decade.

There is no oversight of the Federal Reserve. A few years ago, the Fed allowed a one time partial audit as desired by Congress. Perhaps you should look it up, it will make you sick. Finally, you clearly do not understand how the President selects the Chairman of the Federal Reserve. Basically, the Federal Reserve submits to the President a list of three choices (Larry, Curly, and Moe. From that list the President picks the Chairman.

Oh yes, let's get rid of government regulations on business. The industrial revolution was such a WONDERFUL time to live in for the rich. They got to run sweatshops in the USA, pay their employees far, far below a living wage, form monopolies that threatened the free markets, produce dangerous goods that cost lives, and dump toxic waste into the environment at a rate we wouldn't believe nowadays. Sounds like a utopia to me! And the middle class...wait. There was no middle class. Oh, and the gold standard. Don't even get me started. This is what you blind Ron Paul followers think is going to help the situation? Extremes are never the answer.

Yes, it was a terrible thing to have a man with great foreign policy, chose to stay out of the gay agenda because he felt it was not a state matter. A man who was an excellent MD, not a "groomed" politician. A man who wanted less government. He was such a loser. Are you freaking kidding me?

I am still voting for Ron Paul in the June Primary in CA. A vote for Mitt Robme is a vote for his lobbyists.

You can see who supports him. That might give you an idea about what positions he will take. If I have to choose between Robme and Obama, Obama will win my vote.

LOL he isnt suspending or bowing out of the race at all. He is going after the delegates. Thats the name of the game. He doesn't need to campaign. His support will take all the delegates and laugh at Romney at the convention.

He's just another senior who found the Winnebago too close after a few months of road trips. Maybe he'll spend his own money and travel on cruise lines like most other seniors from now on.

I frankly like this guy. Question- please be honest....Do you think he's thinking about a VP role? It seems like good business to me, he has a good following and would bring those votes.
