Paul says he'll cease campaigning in coming primaries

NBC's Mark Murray joins NewsNation to explain how Ron Paul's decision affects the 2012 campaign.

Texas Rep. Ron Paul said Monday that he'll cease campaigning in upcoming caucuses and primaries, an announcement of symbolic, if not substantive, significance.

Paul, the libertarian-minded congressman who'd sought to convert his grassroots support and fundraising prowess into electoral success, sent a letter to supporters announcing he'd stop spending money on forthcoming nominating contests.

"Moving forward, however, we will no longer spend resources campaigning in primaries in states that have not yet voted. Doing so with any hope of success would take many tens of millions of dollars we simply do not have," he said in a statement.

The announcement changes little, though, for the Paul campaign. While the candidate had continued to hold rallies in Texas and California -- at which, his campaign boasted, thousands of attendees would appear -- those events were sporadic at best. Moreover, Paul had hardly been a regular presence on the campaign trail since the earliest contents, and he had largely eschewed primaries in favor of caucuses, where his enthusiastic supporters threatened to influence the outcomes.

But Paul never won any of those caucuses, and his campaign turned its attention in recent weeks to the obscure process of delegate allocation on the state level. The Texas congressman said Monday that his team would continue in its bid to accrue delegates.

"Our campaign will continue to work in the state convention process.  We will continue to take leadership positions, win delegates, and carry a strong message to the Republican National Convention that liberty is the way of the future," he said.

Paul's endgame in pursuing delegates (affecting the platform, maybe, or even winning a spot for him or his son on the Republican ticket) is far from clear. Paul announced last year that he would not seek re-election, spurring speculation that his son, Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, who was elected in 2010, might inherit the Paul political organization.

This election is going to be like the movie "Alien vs Pedator" (you can pick which candidate is which ;) ). No matter who wins, we the people lose.

I'll be voting GOP downticket in November, but 3rd party for president.

A perfect example of the hypocrisy of the Libertarian platform. Paul states that campaigning, "...would take many tens of millions of dollars we simply do not have." Yet, his party's platform calls for, "the repeal of the income tax." So, it takes money to run a campaign -- but not a government?

Brian,........ Ron Paul never has been a Libertarian, or republican for that matter, even though he has campaigned as both. Ron Paul is a Constitutionalist who believes in governing in compliance with the rules and guidelines set forth in the US Constitution, not aberrations of.......A Ron Paul president is way over due !

If you are one of those who could careless about adhering to the US Constitution anymore, think about this, " If we do not adhere to the supreme law of the land, then what, or who's laws and rules do we govern by ?"

I liked Ron Paul's foreign policy, basically 'get out of all the places we do not belong'. But did not like his domestic policy at all. He seemed to want to eliminate government. Reducing would help, but you can't eliminate it.

He doesn't want to eliminate the government. As you say, he only wants to LIMIT big government. It's possible you might have mis-understood. I've heard him say many times he only wants to limit government.

Typical of the mainstream media. This has become their protocol now. Sure they'll mention Ron Paul...as long as it downplays his efforts. What the mainstream is afraid to publicly admit out of fear from the establishment is, that the Ron Paul campaign, despite it's financial shortcoming and non-support from the MSM, is actually bigger and more powerful then most people even know. If you people want the real truth, then stop wasting your time with mainstream garbage. It's only a matter of time before the MSM can no longer avoid having to report the REAL truth on the Ron Paul revolution and the RNC's effort to keep him out of the spotlight.

Bane capital sole purpose is to make money for its investors. It is not meant to save jobs or buy industries and keep them forever. If the sum of the parts is more than the net worth of whole company they will sell the parts and lay-off workers. This is what Romney has done over and over again. His concern are not the workers. his concern is profit - pure and simple. That is why he would have liked to see GM go bankrupt. GM parts are worth than the whole company. A good move for venture capital if they can get their hands on it. If Romney gets to the White House he will try to put the country in depression - a good condition for venture capitals such as Bane Capital to make money. Mitt is dangerous for America. Ron Paul is a bit crazy but is honest and part of his agenda can improve conditions in the US and improve the deficit. Obama is a much better choice than either Mitt or Ron.

It amazes me to see the MSM spin this so negatively for Paul and so positive for Romney.

Romney gets over $100 Million in free advertising from the MSM. Why would Paul want to waste money there?

He is not removing his campaign from caucuses. He is focusing on the delegate strategy, which up until now, it's winning against Romney.

Ron Paul is projected to win AT LEAST 12 STATES as of right now: Washington, Nevada, Colorado, Missouri, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Maine, Iowa, Virginia, Arizona, Louisiana, and Massachusetts.

The media can spin it all they want.

When Ron Paul shows up at the RNC in August with as many delegates as Mitt Romney, we will see who is laughing.

Ron Paul is well on track to force, and eventually WIN a brokered convention.

Ron Paul = Warren Harding 2.0

RON PAUL IS NOT SUSPENDING HIS CAMPAIGN!!!

HE IS REALLOCATING FUNDS TO FOCUS ON BEATING ROMNEY IN DELEGATES.

                THIS INCLUDES CALIFORNIA AND TEXAS.

Romney may win the popular vote, but Ron Paul may win the vast majority of delegates out of both states.

The media doesn't talk about how much money Romney spent on trying to win the "straw vote" in some of these states, where Ron Paul didn't spend much but swept the vast majority of delegates.

The only thing that matters is delegates...

For every delegate Romney has, he probably spends $500,000.

For every delegate Paul has, he probably spends $25,000.

Who would be better at handling out economy by being able to effectively balance a tight budget?

                Gee, you tell me.

Ron Paul has never said he wants to abolish most all government and close 'all' foreign military bases. Even if it were true, people need to realize there are a whole lot of democrats and republicans in Congress he would have to go through...The president does not write laws, the president may either approve or reject laws written by Congress and administrate the enforcement of such laws passed...........Our president does not, and never will have powers of a dictator lest Congress and the people give such powers.

In these times of a corrupt and dysfunctional government, Ron Paul is the perfect adult and bitter pill for the job of president.............Paul in 2012 for meaningful change we can believe in.

Dear Voters- it should come to no surprise that the libertarian or third voice that comes to the plate bows out of the race. If the big issues are jobs and the economy, then there is no difference between the other two candidates. The one named Romney will turn our country around because he grew up in the private sector and knows how business works. (please!!!!!!!!, Washington does not work like a business and never will) Mr. Obama has been in the hot seat for 4 years and has been hard pressed to get things done due to a reluctant congress. The key ingredient is not in the oval office, voters, but how we shake up members in the legislative branch. Streamlining regulations and revamping the tax codes are the only solutions to recovery.

At least the libertarian candidate represented a whistle blower on Washington in the debates. The other two candidates will continue their mudslinging until November. Congress is in a denial mode during an election year and job recovery is just talked about.
