Day after supporting gay marriage, back to fundraising for Obama

SEATTLE, Wash. – He sent shock waves through the political world by announcing his support for same-sex marriage, but President Barack Obama made few references to his shift on the issue during two fundraisers here Thursday.

In fact, the most memorable line from either speech might have been on the economy.

“Sometimes people forget the magnitude of [the recession],” Obama said to 2,000 supporters at the Paramount Theater, his second event of the day. “Sometimes I forget. In the last six months of 2008, while we were campaigning, nearly three million Americans lost their jobs. Eight hundred thousand lost their jobs in the month that I took office. And it was tough. But the American people proved they were tougher,” he said.

The Romney campaign quickly pounced on the president’s suggestion that sometimes he “forgets” about the depths of the economic crisis.

“It’s not surprising that a president who forgot to create jobs, forgot to cut the debt, and forgot to change Washington has now admitted that he’s forgotten about the recession. In fact, it seems that the President has forgotten that he’s been in office for the last three-and-a-half years. In November, the American people won’t forget,” Romney spokesman Andrea Saul said in a statement.

But besides the perhaps inadvertent remark, the president’s Paramount Theater remarks adhered largely to the script he used at his first two campaign events in Ohio and Virginia last weekend.

“You should be able to give your kids the chance to do even better than you, no matter who you are, no matter where you come from, no matter what you look like, no matter your last name, no matter who you love,” he said there, making general remarks about economic fairness with only a slight allusion to same-sex unions.

Obama also praised the voters of Washington State for voting in a law legalizing same-sex marriage, which takes effect in June but may be challenged on a ballot measure in November.

“Here in Washington you'll have a chance to make your voice heard on the issue of making sure that everybody, regardless of sexual orientation is treated fairly," he said to raucous cheers.

Speaking earlier at an elaborate lakeside home in Seattle, the president focused his remarks on the progress he said his administration has made on the economy since he took office, staying far away from his record on gay rights.

“The good news is we've weathered the storm,” he told a room of about 70 supporters, who had each paid $17,900 to attend the event.

He told the attendees that he preferred to spend most of his time at private events like these answering questions, but the traveling press was escorted out of the home before he began, unable to hear whether any of the guests asked him what prompted to change his mind.

Following his Seattle appearances, the president went to Los Angeles where he spoke at a $40,000-per-person dinner at actor George Clooney’s Studio City home.

With the Clooney 'fundraiser' already scheduled, the timing of Barry's gay marriage announcement was curious! I suspect he was hoping to make that particular announcement at the big Clooney / Hollywood party, but sleepy joe's gaff forced the premature 'ejaculation' of Barry's evolving opinion on the subject! What an amazing political animal is Obama!

That is true! What's also true is that he's an inept leader and doesn't know squat about fixing the economy!

Let's go back on topic- President supports gay marriage and fundraising. So he meant to say it, but didn't mean to say it until he could get more political milage/money out of it (President said as much to ABC). Since Joe Quail gaffed again the President had to roll out his "surprise" early. Within 24 hours of his statement his campaign got $15 million, yet the latest polls show he lost 7% in the same amount of time. So what do we take from this:

While a fun political ball, gay marriage may not have been quite the "popularity" home run that it was for fundraising.

The President already is distancing himself from actual "change" noting that he won't be moving his new cause any further than an endorsement (he won't advocate legislation). Maybe it was all a money/votes ploy after all??

Turns out that statistically gay marriage support is primarily a white thing, while minorities are typically more religiously conservative.

Bet by the end of the run it will be a non-issue, just like his quick run for "women's rights", "student loans", etc. To me it's all about the benjamins and getting a second term, no real value from then on.

This is simply too funny ! Obama tries real hard to act like he's a "regular guy" and represents middle class America before he goes to bump elbows with the Hollywood elitists for the low, low, low price of only $17,900 a plate !!!

I don't know whether to call him the Campaigner-in-Chief or the Fundraiser-in-Chief, but he sure as hell has YET to submit a realistic budget proposal to the Congress ! Imagine, now in his 4th year of office .... no budgets, $1.3 trillion dollar annual deficits, unemployment still above 8% even after his "shovel ready" jobs were not so shovel ready ....... and Obama is Dancing with the Stars !

A rock star we don't need. We need someone competent to restore fiscal sanity in Washington D.C. We need leadership that will recognize we cannot have endless deficit spending without pushing this country into bankruptcy !

I just love how Obama says to bunch of donors that can afford a 17,900.00 fundraiser followed by a 40,000.00 per person event, that America has weathered the storm. Well at least the people Obama associates with didn't have to worry about the storm. For that matter Obama hasn't worried about it either, there are still no jobs, our debt has skyrocketed, and spending totally out of control. But Obama cronies have weathered it just fine.

You righties are so patriotic rooting for our economy to fail. Just so you can unseat Obama. Why do you hate America so much? Why would we want to elect anyone with that traitorous mindset?

You know I wanted America to succeed under Bush, even though he was the worst president of all time and sent us into a 2nd Great Depression.

There are a few articles on obama being gay and now he has his "composite" woman in his book. He also admitted to bullying a girl when he was younger. Read his book, he resented his mother. By the way, does obama's "Julia" mean no women in higher office, going to college, etc.?

Create a "problem/issue" the incorporate the "problem/issue" as a diversion in campaign speeches (i.e. class warfare, women's rights, racial issues, immigration issue, Romney's High School antics, et al, and now same sex marriage). I wonder what Mr. Obama's Cheeeecago Boot Camp is going to think of next.

In this case, Mr. Obama MAY talk about "same sex marriage" at some campaign stops and not talk about it at others. "I was against it before but now I am for it" seems to be Mr. Obama's Modus Operandi now since the election is rapidly approaching. His "targets" are nothing more than for pure political gain and the losers will be whomever he is targeting for his next campaign speech.

Just how many of his "voter base" has he thrown under the bus ?

Yep, back to Mr. Obama's political diversion agenda since he WILL NOT DISCUSS his performance on any of the Major issues:

      • "An organizer must stir up dissatisfaction and discontent."
      • Rule 13. "Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it and polarize it."
        Both quotes; Saul Alinsky.

Really nice that Mr./Mrs. Clinton discussed last year in New York about running against Mr. Obama. I would really like to have heard that meeting. Maybe the Bilderberg folks got wind of the meeting and had it immediately "cloaked".

      One and GONE !!!

BTW folks: keep an eye of the "Law of the Sea" treaty which is supposed to be ratified next month. Talk about giving up America's soverignty.

No Government, or level of government, should be denying any American, or group of Americans, what that American, or group of Americans, believes is their rights...

Here is the solution to make everyone happy...

The Federal Government, and all other levels of Government, will no longer recognize, forbid, or sanction any type of Social Bond, regardless of the genders or numbers involved...If any American chooses, or is forced, to provide support to any other American, that should be treated as a charitable contribution for tax purposes, and the recipient of that support should be required to report that as income for tax purposes...

Of course, he always manages to include some little "policy speech" somewhere that he can call it "legitimate". I suppose the GSA trip to Vegas was "legitimate" as well.

I would imagine the republicans would forget first about just how bad it was when Bush left office....like when the economy was so bad John McCain wanted to suspend his candidacy in order to try an fix it before it completely failed...or Bush himself having to place the first 750 billion dollar bailout just to keep things afloat so Obama could take office. Reaganomics is what caused almost all the national debt & jobs lost overseas, perhaps that's the one thing we should truly forget.

It was bad in 2008, and much worse today. Gas prices have doubled, as with food and other commodities we need. Who gets shafted over this? Seeking Sanity---Try this logic on for size, You vote for a good responsible candidate who gets elected. He goes to Congress as a freshman and does a great job of representing you and your neighbors, so you all elect him for a second term. This time he gets placed on an important sub-committee where he can really do your district or state some real and permanent good. Towards the end of his second term he has learned a lot, his colleagues like him, so he gets the ChairmanShip of that oh so important sub committee. Now he is in a powerful position and can really deliver the goods for you and your concerns. So you send him a letter that says" Sorry buddy, good luck in your next career" Personally I think that is beyond foolish--to force an accomplished representative who has accumulated useful power to quit so you can replace him with another nicky new guy with no power, no influence, and start all over again--how does that make any sense?? Do you really want o keep passing that power and influence to some other guy who doesn't represent you?

Like I said, Term limits only limit your choices, not theirs! Meaning you are forced to fire the guy who has done a good job and replace him with an unknown and powerless guy.

There are good points in both #7.4 and #7.5 !

How about this concept ..... we put a maximum number of years for Congress at, perhaps ..... 18 or maybe 24 years ? This would allow for valuable experience to accumulate and allow for 3 or 4 terms as Senator and 9 to 12 terms as Representative. The proposed law would have to include a "grandfather" provision excepting previously elected Congressmen from the rule. (That's the only way you would get it to pass)

This would possibly reduce the "profession" in time as future elected officials like Lugar and Rangel could no longer serve for 33 years or more. Certainly, this will not satisfy everyone, but perhaps it would be a step in the right direction.

            Nolimitsoldier,

But it is, in fact, designed to be a career. Some of the most important positions of power in Congress take years to ascend to. Term Limits cheat the voter out of the right to keep a good man in his job. We don't need term limits, the real term limit should be exercised by the voter in the voting booth.

The 100 should all have equal power, not more power with more terms; same for the 435. What do you want? dick tattors in the house and senate. As for the gays, in theory, if the whole nation became gay, married or not, we would be on our last generation.

Only 70 people in Seattle showed up to pay some $17K. With all those techie millionnaires?? Hopefully Clooney at $40k each will draw a bigger crowd--Hollywood types and all.

Those were both in private homes, not some big convention center, theater, or other large facility. Do you have a home large enough for more than 70 people? Did you even read the story? The "public" fund-raiser had 2000 people attending. The 70 person event was a "private home" event, just as Clooney's event was.

The house is almost 7k sqf, im sure the typical guest didnt need 100 sqf of space, but then again we are talking about liberal voters..

Its funny they felt so dirty afterwards they are now trying to get rid of the home, they should wait until next yr though before selling it though. Since thats when the 2% home tax kicks in and they need to do their patriotic duty.

The real laugh is the OWS-99% movement couldn't "eat" or attend at either event! So much so ,you "notice" how MSNBC will not even bring this fact up. What a worthless job of reporting by Ali Weinberg. It's obvious the reporter got on their knees and assumed the position.

One of the candidates is a complete failure as president. Lets give the other guy a chance to prove himself. He is the only one who has not been a proven failure and the only one who is likely to do a good job.....In other words, if you re-elect a failure, what outcome would you expect for our country...? I think, just more failure.

And it's far too sad that Obama will never truly know the courage and patriotism that McCain showed being a soldier and POW... It's too bad that he never really understands the true sacrifice made by those that chose to serve their country by being in the military instead of being a "community organizer".

It is insulting the way in which the Romney campaign communicates to the electorate. Granted, Romney is a republican and he is going to get the overwhelming number of republicans votes no matter what he says or how he says it. But it is clear that he is going to need votes from many whoa re not so willing to swallow some line of newly crafted word spin that tries to change black to white when he remember it at all. I mean, how do you forget an incident where you lead an effort to humiliate some guy for not wanting to look like everyone else by wrestling the dude to the ground and cutting off his hair? Pretty damn cold. What sane person could possibly believe that Romney could not unequivocally deny that sort of hyper dramatic event if it had never happened.....Even after being cued he couldn't recall......really?

You have to be either insulted, blind or just stone stupid.......

Or perhaps we could discuss Obama's academic record, right? Oh wait, that's right, we can't because it's sealed. You see, there are two sides and for everyone that thinks Romney is an unfit candidate, you well bet that there are plenty of people that Obama is an unfit candidate as well.

Romney is a regular pingpong ball on issues and everything else. He says what he thinks people want to hear at the time . He doesnt mean a word of what he says. and the repubs. are dumb enough to fall for it. This man is a spoiled little elitist who was a bully in school and will be the same in office. He is so out of touch its pathetic. He doesnt no what its like in the real world and he doesnt care!!! He only cares about getting control just like all these repubs. They think we have forgotten what they did last time they were in the WH....I dont think so buddy! Vote for the repubs and we are doomed!

Obama was speaking of his opinion on gay marriage..he wasnt asking anyone else to feel the same. Republicans want to command everyone to think like them. When are these guys gonna realise they cant MAKE anyone think like they do...no one can and they dont have the right to anyway because we were all born the same and all of us were given free will by our maker. No one has the right to tell anyone what they should or should'nt feel.

You're right - Romney has changed his stance on every topic presented to him and he continues to do so. On immigration he said he would be "more liberal than Ted Kennedy" now he's against it. Oh same-sex marriage - the tender subject - he's waffled as long as he could and now he's against it - until it helps him, then he'll be for it. Perhaps Romney took a page from Obama's playbook or not, it's clear that no one is more inconsistent nor has less values than Obama. First he's for gay marriage, then he's against, and now when he's back into a corner by the bumbling Biden, he has to backpedal again and come out for gay marriage.

For Super PAC's, first he's against, and well, now he's for it... I swear I'm surprised his head doesn't pop off with all the spinning he does...

That sounds like foolish words from trying to make it sound like high drama.... Other than the media doing cartwheels, it was no big deal to most people...I even saw the media use the word "landmark" again. That is one of their favorite words in their praise of Obama...I suspect that his "evolving" has much to do with him trying to please and broaden his liberal base in an election year, otherwise he would not bother...just as he has not bothered up to this point. But, I am sure that if he gets the hick-ups, it will be a landmark hick-up situation.....according to the media...

I heard today on CNN that 1 out of 6 of his professional fundraisers are gay/lesbian. They were not pleased of the huge vote to define marraige in North Carolina, where their convention is. My guess is to keep his fundraising going at its record setting pace. The previous 5 presidents didn't surpass 100 fundraisers in their 10 month campaigns. Obama surpassed all of them together (total of 50 months) in just 4 months.

                            And basically you just suck.

You "forgot" to mention your flip on gay marriage because you know that your very

presence at any public gathering will overcome what they should know as truth.

People who are gullible get all cow eyed in your presence, and you are counting on the lemming mentality.

This time it will not work.

Gay marriage is not the political issue. Lack of jobs production by this 112th Congress is the issue. Congress gutted Pell Grants to offset proposed military cuts. College affordability has sky rocketed and student debt cannot be discharged through bankruptcy, but the richest do not have to worry about that. The 112th Congress has failed to legislate any jobs for America for the graduates, who are destined for long jobs searches and low wages. Sadly our representatives in the House and Senate pay allegiance to puppeteers, corporations and syndicates before the constituents they are supposed to represent. Those who organize and gather huge sums of money get representation. Extreme fringe elements have learned these principles well and have gained local and state level control to secure a tighter grip on power. “The revolution is working, we have infiltrated the Republican Party, and we will convert the Republican Party to defenders of liberty” - This statement was made at the TEA party meeting in Texas with Ted Cruz, Ron and Rand Paul. The Treacherous Egotistical Activist(TEA) have scored numerous inroads across America with subtle, yet power grabs to infuse their people into positions of control. Control at the local level and party have allowed the few control the masses much like radical Islam has taken over the Muslim religion skewering fringe ideas and ideals. It has been well documented the Troubling Economic Antagonist(TEA) party would field contestants around the nation to further their skewed, narrow-minded fringe beliefs and effect local and state controls while moving towards national prominence. Get involved locally. That's where the real power lies. Vote straight Democratic Ticket! Effect a change! Make your voices heard! Get active locally - Get active at the state level - Get registered to vote - Vote - Get out the vote!

When the job outlook is not so good it is the fault of congress but if it picks up it will be all the presidents doing right Rudy? BTW there are quite a few Democrats in Congress rite now and they still have the Senate Majority but all our problems still stem from Republicans right Rudy. Heck even when the Democrats controlled both the senate and the house it was the Republicans fault that Congress couldn't get anything done right Rudy?

Nice post Larry it sounds like the president is campaigning for Ron Paul in that speech doesn't it? Funny that it is in complete contrast to everything he has actually done huh?

                            Rudy,

You know the Ron Paul campaign has not kept their strategy a secret. They have been telling every news media outlet. The outlets just aren't passing the information on to you. Just like they aren't reporting Paul has won 11 states. (in case you didn't know you win a state by taking the majority of the delegates not by winning a "beauty contest") The fact of the matter is that his supporters care enough about changing the downward spiral this country is in to the point that they are willing to get off their butts and do something about it other than just complaining and the Paul campaign is well organized and smart enough to educate people on how to make a difference in the system. You are correct in the fact that Paul supporters are taking over local and state delegate and government positions like mad. The world is shaped by people that act and the Republican party is being taken back and will become the party of Liberty, low taxes and smaller government it once was.

I will do my part to try and save our country from them. But I'm not fooled. I am poor and face daily strife. This I cannot lose anything, for I have nothing to lose. But those in the middle class who support this extremist agenda will suffer at the hands of thier own doing. We only need to look at Wisconsin

He's likely not to make it his central issue, though it will be one in a list of many ambitions. But this is likely to become a central issue for the radical religious right via sheer hatred of it, and the longer it stays an issue, the more they expose the fact that they're cherry-pick judging a group by the old testament ways, but claiming themselves to be of the new testament. Matthew 7:12 > Anything in Leviticus, or the rest of the old testament for that matter.

I dont understand why everyone is sooo obsessed with what people do in the privacy of their own bedrooms!!! Its nobodies business. I think alot of these people are just afraid. Its like they are afraid that if they get too close to someone that is gay that they are gonna molest them or try to turn them gay ...like it might rub off on them or something. Its just stupidity and ignorance!

These people just have petty little minds and need to mind their own business.

Half these guys dont mind jumping from bed to bed and cheat on their wives and thats ok but its horrible to be gay...how hypocritical can you be??

Why the heck does the government get to say anything about marriage? There are areas, like defense, or measurement standards; in which government is uniquely able to fill a vital role. There are others in which, no matter how "good" the intention, or how many people support it; government has no business meddling! The government should say nothing about whom we may marry, what food we eat, which profession we choose, or anything else that is purely a matter of personal freedom.

Over two hundred twenty years ago the Founding Fathers worked tirelessly to create a government that placed individual freedoms above all else. And for over one hundred fifty years that government has been working tirelessly to take them all away.

Edward - your low intelligence is showing and it's not pretty. The "faggot" word has not been used by anyone of intelligence or integrity but you continue to spout it. Clearly you're not comfortable with your own sexuality. Maybe it's time you came out of the closet and fessed up!

Noladude - you're disgusting and a truly pathetic little man (probably in every way). When you stoop to attack a child it says everything about you and none of it is good. You are a disgusting pervert!

You Republicans have no candidate in Romney and you know it. He'd have to reach up to touch the soles of Obama's shoes in terms of integrity and intelligence.

You aren't worth conversing with because you are all disgusting but you prove over and over there is no sanity, no integrity, no decency in the GOP!

So President Obama didn't mention his support for the rights of Gay's and Lesbian's to get married at the fundraising event. As if the WHOLE PLANET hasn't heard and rejoiced OR complained and b*tched until they're voice was hoarse.

Judging from the foolish, hateful comments I've read from the folks on the WACKO-RIGHT, they know that their poster boy for the TOP 1% and candidate of the party of H*LL NO is a loser who will go back to (one of his many homes) and watch his many cars go up and down on the auto-elevator. Mitt (dog-on-the-car-roof) Romney is SOoo rich he doesn't need a job to go back to. Maybe he'll visit Michelle (deranged idiot) and Marcus (closet queen) Bachman in Switzerland.

That is after FORWARD thinking Americans vote for and re-elect OBAMA/BIDEN in 2012 and ANY non-GOP candidates down the ballot.

I just love how you talk about "foolish, hateful comments..." just a few words before you begin attacking with "WACKO RIGHT" and "candidate of the party of H*LL NO is a loser ..."

                                      Hypocrite much ?????

No budget is NOT "forward thinking" my friend. Annual deficits of $1.3 trillion does not make any semblance of fiscal common sense. This is thinking only about the present moment while desperately pandering to multiple issues in hopes of being re-elected.

So you can go back to being a HYPOCRITE, you can call "former candidates" truly HATEFUL things like "deranged idiot", attack their spouse "closet queen" and totally EXPOSE yourself .... but then, everybody posting here gets to know what a "piece of _________" (fill in the blank) you truly have shown.

                                      Jim;

I would refer to the GOP in more positive terms but it was the House Majority "leader" himself that refined the name from the "party of no" to the more eloquent "party of H*LL NO" during a speech from the House floor.

I also noticed that in response to "Seeking Sanity" you stated "incapable of any rational discussion about the article." In your first response to my post there was "no rational" reply to my charges of Mitt (perpetual loser) Romney being filthy rich and not needing to get a job like 99% of Americans who are getting NO HELP from the UNSTABLE right leaning House of Representatives under John Bo(e)ner's party that votes for things that FEEL good to them but have NO CHANCE of passing through the Senate or be signed into law by the POTUS. Most of what I read was MORE INSULTS. It was Dubya that put us back into debt after blowing a budget surplus that was said to be going "as far as the eye can see" until his election to (theft of) the White House.

If you are comfortable being used by the TOP 1% go for it, more power to you.

I, myself, still have HOPE for the future of this country and ALL of it's people so I'm sticking with OBAMA/BIDEN 2012 and ANY non-GOP candidate down the ballot.
