Romney calls marriage 'tender' issue, repeats stance

Updated 5:31 p.m. - Mitt Romney reiterated his opposition to same-sex marriage on Wednesday but declined to condemn President Obama's endorsement of gay marriage, noting the sensitivity of the issue.

Following a campaign speech in Oklahoma that focused primarily on energy, jobs and the economy, the presumptive Republican nominee reaffirmed his opposition to same-sex marriage in light of Obama's announcement today.

"I have the same view on marriage that I had when I was governor," he said. "I believe marriage is a relationship between a man and a woman."

It was an opinion that Romney had voiced earlier in the day to television affiliates in Colorado, when the former Massachusetts governor faced questions amid growing speculation that Obama would announce his support for same-sex marriages.

But while Romney's position contrasted with Obama's, he declined to sharply criticize the president -- saying he would leave it up to the media to parse out Obama's "evolution" on the issue.

"This is a very tender and sensitive topic as are many social issues, but I have the same views I've had since running for office," he said.

Earlier: Romney renews opposition to same-sex marriage

Romney has previously backed certain benefits for gay couples -- for instance, the right to visit with a sick partner in the hospital -- but said each state should be free to determine their own laws.

It was a markedly more subdued reaction by Romney compared to some conservatives, who condemned Obama's support for gay and lesbian couples' ability to marry.

"The announcement today by President Obama should come as no surprise to the American public," said Rick Santorum, Romney's erstwhile conservative challenger in the Republican primary. "President Obama has consistently fought against protecting the institution of marriage from radical social engineering at both the state and federal level."

"While President Obama has played politics on this issue, the Republican Party and our presumptive nominee Mitt Romney have been clear," said Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus. "We support maintaining marriage between one man and one woman and would oppose any attempts to change that."

Obama: 'I think same-sex couples should be able to get married'

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, who passed up an opportunity to run for president in 2012 but maintains a reservoir of support among social conservatives, also condemned Obama's announcement.

"Obama, Pelosi and the Democrats have been a complete failure on economic issues so now they are going to focus on issues that will rile up their base," Huckabee wrote in a statement released by his PAC. "Well, Mr. President it's going to rile up our folks also. Men and women who support traditional marriage."

A spokeswoman for Texas Gov. Rick Perry said: "Election year politics will never change Gov. Perry's unwavering commitment to the sanctity of marriage, defined as a union between one man and one woman. He is proud of North Carolina voters who last night elected to enshrine that definition in their constitution, joining Texas and an increasing number of states in the ongoing effort to defend marriage. Once again, it's clear that President Obama's political ideology doesn't line up with the will of the voters."

Romney campaign reckons with gay rights after aide's exit

But for as many conservative voices decried the president's announcement on Wednesday, many more Republicans kept their silence, including most GOP leaders in both houses of Congress.

"Well I think he made his position pretty clear. I've always believed that marriage is between a man and a woman," House Speaker John Boehner said on the Fox Business Network. Boehner said he wasn't familiar with a proposed amendment to the Constitution to define marriage, but said Obama's announcement was a "very controversial" notion.

By contrast, Democratic supporters of the president could, for the most part, hardly contain their jubilation for Obama's decision.

"Today marks progress for the civil rights of LGBT Americans and all Americans," said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA). "With President Obama's support, we look forward to the day when all American families are treated equally in the eyes of the law."

New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, who endured her own shift toward supporting gay marriage, also hailed the president's announcement as "a watershed moment in American history."

Isn't it ironic, Willard belongs to a church which up until hundred or so years ago practiced polygamy.

Yet, he is against equal & civil rights for all Americans when it comes to gay marriage?

Feisty

And they didn't accept Blacks either.

I brought this over from 2 threads to make sure you see it. Thanks for having the courage to ask about such a sensitive subject.

Feisty Redhead Roselle, IL

With all this chatter from these white pundit about how anti-gay the black community is, can you tell me how/why this is possible given the discrimination blacks have faced in the past?

2+2 just isn't adding up to 4 for me on this.

I would like to hear your expertise if you don't mind!

Thanks GF!

Sure,

First, I'd like to say many of those religious objectors in the pulpit and choir are the biggest homosexuals. I seeded a story about Pastor Eddie Long on News Vine.

Secondly, I'm no expert; but I'll share my input.

Thirdly, I'll say that at one point most of the conversation in the Black community about the LBGT community was sheer disgust. Not so much because of the discriminatory aspect; but because their wanted instant gratification.

One specific example was Lt. Daniel Choi and his rant about feeling like a battered housewife for having to wait so long.

My first thought was B----h, what if you had to endure a long 400+ years from when my people stepped off the boat. There were bloody sieges, battering, bruising from slave whips, lynching past & present, families separated from loved ones, false incarcerations which is the same as separations in a sense, and repeated lies about our existence being a mere consequence of social and economic injustices due to the perspective being unequal to other races on this planet; only to live fight again.

That fight really didn't come to fruition until 40 years ago. We had to get through 2 Civil Rights Act for that type of equality. Jim Crow was prevalent until the past 40 years. The 1st Civil Rights Act came after the Civil War of 1863 and the 2nd Civil Rights Act came when President LBJ signed it in 1964 and later the voting right in 1968.

Yes, we do feel the pain of discrimination. But, what white gay people don't feel is the pain of having dark skin.

As I see we have one the best President's in the history of this country because he feels everyone's pain whether it be color, poverty, false incarcerations, gay, sex, gender, and no gender.

justsayin22 - so you're saying that if a couple has no plans to or can't procreate they should not be allowed to marry? That's interesting. So, an older couple should not marry; couples who have had all the children they plan to and find themselves divorced or widowed should not be able to marry; couples who for some reason cannot have children should not be able to marry? Because as you of course know, none of these couples would be working for the "continuation of the human race" so according to you they should also not be able to marry? Interesting!

You don't need marriage to procreate.

As long as folks are horny and some want children, the human race will continue on.

Don't lecture me on how a marriage makes a child legitimate, either.

No matter what the circumstances, EVERY child is legitimate, whether born to a married couple, raised by a single parent, or adopted into a gay family.

Polygamy is still practiced by Mormons--just no longer against the laws of the land. I'm not saying this to bash a particular religion, it's just a fact. When Mormons are married in the temple, they are "sealed" to one another for eternity. This is above and beyond the legal civil recognition of their marriage. If a couple wants a divorce, the woman remains sealed to the man unless she remarries -- then it is automatically dissolved because women cannot be sealed to more than one man. However, the man remains sealed to the ex-wife (or wives) when he remarries -- unless he requests to no longer be sealed and then there's a pile of paperwork that must be done in order to get the church's approval, and this rarely if ever happens. In other words, Mormons still believe in polygamy. Just sayin...

can someone please explain how "gay marriage" will not effect religious marriage ceremonies for hetero couples? will church's lose their tax-exempt status if they do not perform "gay marriages"? will gays sue church's they may or may not belong to so they can have an "equal ceremony" in an lds temple, catholic church, christian church?? are the glb's really trying to invoke a genderless society and make religious organizations an enemy of the state? i haven't met anyone who thinks gays should be treated less than equal in their "domestic partnerships" from a "wedded partnership". maybe we can give the gays the word "marriage" and create a new word for the hetero's, like "religious partnership". I really don't care, just give us all what we want and be done with it.

Actually polygamy is not exactly illegal for Mormons. The Mormons who still practice polygamy (and the vast majority who do not practice it, but approve of the practice) take advantage of something that most people do not understand about marriage. Marriage is a religious institution that has literally hundreds of various criteria depending on the religion and denomination. There is NO one standard for marriage and the involve of government in establishing any religious practice, including marriage, is strictly forbidden. The Jewish religion, Islam, Mormonism, and many other religions all allow plural marriage. Catholics on the other hand consider any marriage after a divorce as polygamy.

But civil union is a completely separate thing. Civil union is a contract between two people for purposes of civil contracts and law (including taxation.) It has no religious equivalent. Period. If you are "married" by a Justice of the peace, you are not technically "married", but are instead in a civil union. If you are married by a minister, he/she performs the religious rite but also "by the power vested in (him) by the state" also performs a concurrent civil union. A "marriage" without a civil union is a sham but a civil union without a marriage accounts for almost half of all couples.

What Mormons do is only have one marriage recorded as a concurrent civil union. All other marriages are done as religious rites only with no attempt to file taxes or make any civil claims as a spouse. You cannot prosecute Mormons for polygamy because they are only technically "married" insofar as the government is concerned once.

I wonder when someone is going to ask the Mittster about his underwear. We knew from MTV that Carter wore boxers, that W wore briefs, and that Clinton claimed to swing either way, an obvious lie. How about Mitt? I wear boxers that say "Haynes" on the waistband. Surely Mitt would make a similar disclosure. My guess is "neither" and the writing on the waistband will remain unknown.

teknishan, SeekingSanity, et al -- Though gay marriage was already illegal in N. Carolina, the ban just passed could be used against straight couples not living in the bonds of marriage, etc. Bob McDonnell's college writings favored making fornication, etc. illegal. The rightwing, in particular the religious Right love "gateway" (slippery slope) fear mongering, but it is them (theocracy with Sharia Law) and history (e.g., the Scarlet Letter) to truly be concerned about.

In regard to procreation, we as a nation (and world) in the 21st Century, must find ways not to be dependent on population growth in order to have economic growth. Republicans (not so long ago, Dubya) favored illegal immigration for this reason -- Until the GOP/TP realized the "browning of America" would make them a minority.

The only place in the nation with population growth via birth rate was the state of Utah until very recently. But the LDS church involvement in prop 8 in California, along with their activism against ERA for women, and not allowing blacks to hold the priesthood in Romney's lifetime raises a lot of questions about a lot of things...

Chris-749391 -- Those who practice polygamy against the laws of the land are an off-shoot group. There are many incorrect "myths" about Mormons that I will not have a part in. However, there's plenty that is factual that deserves scrutiny.

Yup and they also believe a bunch of other stuff that is different from Christians as well. Ive been actually reading some of the stuff and it scares me. Romney is a devout Mormon. They do have their right to believe what they want. But what I do not get is how the Right can Support this Guys beliefs against their own. While bashing the rights of the Gay and lesbian community. And other Non Christians and Muslims. The Morman's and Muslims work with each other in the Middle east with charity.

The Religion that Romney holds dear.

This is his Messiah Messiah ben Joseph AKA Joseph Smith " Likewise, Jacob 2:25, "I have led this people forth out of the land of Jerusalem, by the power of mine arm, that I might raise up unto me a righteous branch from the fruit of the loins of Joseph."

Its a cult that still believes behind closed doors in power through position. And polygamy is a part of that belief system. With leaders within the Church holding more power than most of the followers. Even getting first pick at wives. The only outlawed part of polygamy in the current church is only to not break our current laws. Not some fundamental belief change.

Today was magnanimous. President Obama will go down in history as being an enlightened President in step with modernity and human values.

I’m welling up with tears right now because of all we've through that you do understand.

I have always been of the belief that people in society influence changes for the better. With this step towards modernity of compassion and unconditional love for our fellow citizens who live, eat, sleep, and bleed, the same as we; these people have often proven themselves to be excellent citizens. They have spilled their blood in wars, adopted children no one wanted, ( what greater love is there?), and have made many, many, contributions to our society with outside pressures demanding them to be something other than themselves. With this realiation the sky is not the limit. I hope they soar in thier endeavors to be who they want to be.

I'm happy to see our country and citizens evolve toward this level of intelligence.

Our President has demonstrated not only what we as black people have to endure; but his decision also gives evidence to his concern that all people are considered equal.

I can't help but reflect back to his speech he gave in Philadelphia on race and forming a "More Perfect Union". In that speech President Obama said:

"We the people, in order to form a more perfect union ..." — 221 years ago, in a hall that still stands across the street, a group of men gathered and, with these simple words, launched America's improbable experiment in democracy. Farmers and scholars, statesmen and patriots who had traveled across an ocean to escape tyranny and persecution finally made real their declaration of independence at a Philadelphia convention that lasted through the spring of 1787

The document they produced was eventually signed but ultimately unfinished. It was stained by this nation's original sin of slavery, a question that divided the colonies and brought the convention to a stalemate until the founders chose to allow the slave trade to continue for at least 20 more years, and to leave any final resolution to future generations. "

I do believe we choose the right person to lead America to future in domestic and forirgn policies. I vowed I will do everthing I can in my being to help this man be re-elected and lead us in the right direction.

His decision today solidifies it.

Soon American society will come to realize we are all humans and did have homosexuality even in Biblical times.

You don't know W-T-F you are talking about. If any one is a racist it is you. Are you the same poster who wants to seek justice for Zimmerman; the guy who murdered Trayvon Martin in cold blood?

The only black fools who think they got over racism are the ones who go on FOX NOISE and kiss ass like slave catchers Allen West and Herman Cain, concubine Angel McGowan, insane Mike Myers, Jesse Peterson who praises god for the white enslavement and any other black fool who is afraid to speak up for himself and his people being mistreated.

We have organizations who fight for freedom, just and equality for not just blacks nut all people as well such as the NAACP, the Lawyers Committee, ACLU, Rainbow Push, National Action Network etc.

You have the KKK, teabaggers, white militia groups, Arizona GOV,Jane Brew, who haven't got ove racism and give Americans and immigrants a bigger protocol headache!

I've been skimming through some of these posts and gotta say, Obama NEVER condemned gay marriage, he only said he didn't want to comment at that time. Romney's position, however, is religiously based, which is why our forefathers luckily put seperation of church and state in our constitution. I am a straight, married white male just to clear the air. I saw a great little comic strip on FB today with an older man talking to a younger one. he says, "they said our wedding was unnatural. That it would destroy the sacred institution of marriage. They said the next step could be legalized incest or bestiality! They said our love couldn't produce a normal healthy family." in the next frame the older man says, "But I married your mother anyways." (she's colored). Sound familiar? The more things change the more they stay the same.

It just seems, and I may be wrong, that just about every generation there comes this great "moral dilemma" and it involves someone's right to equality. The thing is, homosexuality has been around long before the birth of Christ. It found in nature. Chimpanzese have been observed having those relationships. I'm not getting into Evoltionism versus Creationism, but seeing as we share many of the same genes as Chimps, is it really that hard to understand? And when they do get equal rights it's not going to cause the human race to go extinct. Like I said it's been around for a long time and with China having over 1 billion people and the US at around 320 million I don't see any "dark days" of humans dying out any time soon.

DB Akron

Backhouse

Romney is a Juris doctor from Harvard and an MBA from Harvard. Obama is a juris doctor from Harvard and a BA from Columbia. Obama is outclassed in the standards the left prefers to hold the rest of us to.

DB Akron, please present all the facts. Romney left Stanford to get his undergrad degree from BYU (currently nationally ranked #71), which when compared with Columbia (currently nationally ranked #4) is way outclassed. Getting a dual MBA/JD isn't that much different anyway; it is just 3 vs 4 years at that institution (and most business schools accept LSAT scores for these sort of dual programs, so if one was accepted into a school's law program they could likely make it into the business school too if they wanted).

If Obama wasn't planning on going into business, it would have been pointless to stay the extra year to get an additional degree (let alone pay for those extra semesters as his family didn't have the kind of money that Romney's did). Thus, your point is irrelevant.

Nice try though.

Yeah, and John F. Kennedy was a 'devout Catholic'. They tried to use that against Kennedy, claiming that he would take his orders from the Pope. It didn't work in 1960, and it won't work today.

ummm, maybe because there were over 25 million Catholic voters in 1960. Don't think the Latter Day Saints have those kind of numbers.

And John F. Kennedy belonged to a church that practiced the Inquisition several hundred years ago, but since neither was a alive at the time, what is your point?

what is your point, Roy? I fail to see the connection. There are still people of the Mormon faith that believe and have attempted to practice polygamy. I know of no Roman Catholics that either believe in or have attempted to re-create the Inquisition. Ah, let me take that back. Mel Brooks did in History of the World Part I. Oh wait, he's Jewish, so it doesn't count.

All you hate mongers and followers of religious rabble rousers, do not be deceived. You yet continue to hold your rights to hate all those of benign differences. The President has simply consummated his understanding of human fairness and the 14th amendment of our constitution. You though, can continue to pile on, deny, and condemn, these people to the hell you wish for them, with total legal abandon. These people have always had to carry much more than others could, and will not be unburdened for yet some time.

    @TruePatriot-445959 & Chris-

Pull your collective heads out of your posteriors! Mormons- that is, the mainstream Church (not the off-shoots that are NOT part of the Church!) do NOT practice polygamy, and haven't in a VERY long time. For you to even suggest it makes you either complete morons or just plain ignorant- period.

For the rest of you that are espousing "facts" about the Church- where do you get your information???? Do you just make stuff up? or do you read it off some blog and pass it along?

If you would like facts- go to the source and read it yourself! Don't just buy into crap that doesn't even resemble truth. lds dot org is a good place to start. mormon dot org is another. Or better yet- ask a member!! They are more than happy to share anything you want to know.

sorry gang- the Church is not covering up deep dark secrets just so people who "know" can out them! it just isn't happening...

LookForTheTruth -- Pull your head out of your arse. Men can be "sealed" to more than one woman in the Mormon temple. That is a fact.

About time gays can enjoy the pain and torture of marriage! I think marriage should be outlawed in the eyes of the government. Too many divorces, cost to courts is astounding. You want marriage, do it. No legal bond so I don't have to pay a judge to preside over your divorce.

        #1.61 - Thu May 10, 2012 11:15 AM EDT

Since we are discussing polygamy here. I live near a polygamy colony, I went to high school with the kids from this colony. I don't really care what they do up there, because I think that it isn't my business just like gay marriage. This is what I do care about, this group lives on church land so they pay no property taxes which is how our public schools are paid for. When you have half of the school population coming from this group and none are paying into the school that becomes a problem. The other issue I have is that they do not have the legal right to marry more than one woman so they have one legal wife and the rest they are married to within their church not within the law. So....these women who are actually married start having children but since their marriage isn't legal in the eyes of the law, they look like single mothers with handfuls of children so they are all on welfare. Like I said, I don't care what they want to do, but when they are scr@wing over the tax payers right and left in a very rural area, I DO have a problem with that. Our schools and welfare programs just can't handle it.

So Romney is personally opposed to same sex marriage but would let each state decide how to deal with the issue. Where is the problem with that? Don't even try convince me this attitude is one iota different than Odumbo's stand. Contrary to what he said yesterday, there is no doubt in my mind that Romney and Odumbo are in lock step on the issue, the only difference is Biden opened his yap and forced his boss to take a stand, a stand I do not believe is heart felt at all, but done for political expediency, which is the driving motivation for everything Odumbo does.

          Sorry Beverly,

But people like you, Obama, Holder, Sharpton, JJ are examples of why racism are so rampant in this country. Have any of you even 'shed a tear' for the white folks that have been mobbed and had the crap beat out of them since Trayvon? Have any of you thought about how the media and politicians spun the whole trayvon thing out of control to stoke the racial fires? Hell, the media showed editted videos and played editted 911 calls multiple times just get you all pissed off. Here's a thought... since black vs black violence is the worst in the country, why don't you look in your own back yard and fix your own sh*t instead of blaming it on us whites? Us whites weren't around during the slavery times, you weren't around during the slavery times. I personally don't give a rats ass what color you are, it doesn't matter to me, because I don't base anything on race. YOU are the one with the race problem. Get the hell over it. The democratic politicians and liberal media have all of you so snowed over all of this it's just pathetic.

Only when people get past what color they are, and what color other people are, will we be past racism. I'm past it... so what's your problem?

            #1.64 - Thu May 10, 2012 4:09 PM EDT

It's tough to understand the controversy. In reality the number 1 cause of divorce is marriage. The number 1 reason for the end of a marriage is divorce. So perhaps either marriage or divorce should be illegalized? I don't see gays as a threat.

All4Areason - Condi can't run for VP. All of her little actions as Secretary of State would be brought up and she can't afford that. She admits the Bush administration was warned ahead of 9/11 that we would be attacked through our own airlines but they decided not to tell the airlines because "they didn't know exactly how the attack would be carried out or if it was credible."

She was told by the CIA that the metal tubes found in Iraq could not be used for chemical warfare but decided to dismiss that fact when putting together their report. Decided it wasn't credible.

Talk about not credible - that would be Condi Rice!

Condoleeza Rice took it on the chin for Bush, that much is true but she never backed down from any other diplomats. She has had the experience of dealing in foreign affairs that Mitt desperately needs and has the qualification to be president if need be:

Academic, Republican politician. Born November 14, 1954 in Birmingham, Alabama. The only child of a Presbyterian minister and a teacher, Rice grew up surrounded by racism in the segregated South. She earned her bachelor's degree in political science from the University of Denver in 1974; her master's from the University of Notre Dame in 1975; and her Ph.D. from the Graduate School of International Studies at the University of Denver in 1981. She joined Stanford University as a political science professor in 1981. In 1993, she was the first woman and first African American to become a Stanford provost, a post she held for six years.

Over 100 years ago, the US had a slavery issue, but most people, except for Bev the racist from Chicago, have moved on from this. Since the time of FDR the progressives have attempted to change the nation with their entitlement programs, helping to poor to stay on the plantation. Like those crazy French, if we spend more, we will have more. Right

            Wrong, winemaker

You don't know W-T-F you are talking about. If any one is a racist it is you. Are you the same poster who wants to seek justice for Zimmerman; the guy who murdered Trayvon Martin in cold blood?

The only black fools who think they got over racism are the ones who go on FOX NOISE and kiss ass like slave catchers Allen West and Herman Cain, concubine Angel McGowan, insane Mike Myers, Jesse Peterson who praises god for being enslaved by white; and any other black fool who is afraid to speak up for himself and his people being mistreated.

We have organizations who fight for freedom, justice, and equality for not just blacks but all people as well such as the NAACP, the Lawyers Committee, ACLU, Rainbow Push, National Action Network etc.

@tonybeeerm, Romney is not "testing the wind." He's had his position on gay marriage for some time now. Obama, on the other hand, up to yesterday had been saying his position is "still evolving." He's had over three years and multiple debates (some of which took place in my dear California) to evolve his decision. If Romney were "testing the wind" he'd be more on the fence about it and only saying states should determine their stance on this issue. Instead he is, and this article says it several times, REITERATING his stance on this issue. This play by Obama, supporting gay marriage, is simply setting him against Mitt Romney, the "presumptive Republican candidate" as MSNBC puts it here.

This article is nothing more than a continued bash on Republicans and the right wing and an outcry of support for Democrats and the left wing. In fact, Romney is right about one thing, this shouldn't be an issue on the national level. This issue is up to the states to determine.

Marriage should be between one man and one woman and another woman and another woman and another woman, and another woman and another woman and another woman and another woman and another woman and another woman and another woman and another woman. Considering Revs Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton are both following in the footsteps of Dr. MLK and the other FOX NOISE lackeys I mentioned aren't; I'll let you decide.

Here are just a few of Dr. King's quotes of the way he lived his life as he marched for freedom which is exactly what Revs Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton do. Yes, Dr king was just as maligned as these 2 ; and even gave his life so all people could be accepted in the realm of humanity and togetherness.

"The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort
and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy. The true neighbor will risk his position, his prestige and even his life for the welfare of others".
              Martin Luther King

“Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.”

“There comes a time when silence is betrayal.”

“It may be true that the law cannot make a man love me, but it can stop him from lynching me, and I think that's pretty important.”
              ― Martin Luther King Jr.

Discrimination is a hellhound that gnaws at Negroes in every waking
moment of their lives to remind them that the lie of their inferiority is
accepted as truth in the society dominating them.
              Martin
              Luther King, Jr.

              ― Martin Luther King Jr.

"Now is the time to rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation to the sunlit path of racial justice.
Now is the time to open the doors of opportunity to all of God's children. Now is the time to lift our nation from the quicksands of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood.”

This is so beautifully written, it almost brought tears to my eyes. What a dramatic way to demonstrate the difference between the parties.

Feisty, you have a great way of turning a phrase, and explaining things clearly.

While I am a happily married heterosexual woman, I think I could fall in love with you two! Oh, probably not in the homosexual way, but as dear friends who share much of the same ideology as I do. And yes, I do firmly believe in love between men and love between women. They are not always "gay" relationships, but sometimes display some of the finer acts of love among friends.

Thanks for being there and writing so articulately.

              Kirigami,

I am truly appreciate it and I think my Feisty would be too. Thank you; I try to live my life by the things I say and do. Believe me, I could love you just as much.

We do not have to love one another physically to express how much we care . In my profession, I was tremendously moved spiritually by the LGBT patients I cared for. Never in my life had I seen so much love and commitment for human beings as I did with those afflicted by the HIV virus.

It was such an extraordinary experience to be there with all the love and warmth that existed in those couples, their families; particularly their children.

I am extremely grateful we have a President who spoke from his heart about his transformation rather than any political pandering as some exclaimed. That was a long journey for him as we saw.

I understood President Obama's evolution perfectly because I been there.

              Again, thank you

Obama is after the wealthy campaign donors that think same sex marriage is an important issue and nothing else. How funny is it that Obama is blaming his kids, Malia and Sasha for this evolution. Obama has got to blame someone. Obama could careless which way this wind blows, just so long as his campaign gets funded and he gets re-elected. Then as Obama so aptly put it, this is his last election after which he will have more flexibility.

The more flexibility will show everyone where Obama truly stands, and there will be plenty of people, special interest groups, and countries tossed under the bus when or if his re-election happens. This is another non issue, a distraction from the lack of an Obama record, and not something he can do anything about on his own. It certainly does not help the economy, or bring back jobs, but no surprise it is front page news in the mainstream media.

I don't vote for a politician based on their personal "convictions". I vote for someone who will allow ME to live MY life the way I think I should. President Obama is doing just that. You go ahead and vote for the GOP "convictions" and watch your liberties be stripped away.

The elephant in the room is what homosexual couples do in the privacy of their homes. The conservative religious (whether GOP or Democrat) know (or suspect) that homosexual couples engage in sexual activity they believe is sinful and condemned by biblical religious tradition.

The issue is not really the rights of homosexual couples, it is their practices condemned in the bible. With all due respect to the Christian Faithful, legislation based on the Bible is no more desirable than legislation based on the Koran, the teaching of Buddha, Shintoism or Hinduism.

Monogamous heterosexual marriage is not a natural human condition. There are many cultures not adherents to the Bible or Koran that independently developed variations of monogamy, polygamy and concubines. Not to mention Western cultures that tolerate mistresses.

The GOP understandably wishes to use Christian tradition as legal precepts. However, the USA is made up of of many cultures and many religions, all of whom are guaranteed freedom from oppression by majority religious beliefs.

In other words, the elephant in the room is an elephant that has no right to be in the room, in anyone's room. The preachy elephant likes to talk about the government not interfering with anyone's private life, and yet it very much likes to be there to tell people who to have sex with. Sorry, but I'm not having it.

I can find at least 100 quotes in the Bible that show that Jesus would undoubtedly support universal healthcare, higher taxes for the rich, or myriad things that the GOP is strongly opposed to. If they think the government is not big enough to do right by society in ways that Jesus not only approved but actively promoted, then the government is not big enough to use Christian teachings (which should in no way dictate how the government acts in the first place) as a precept to tell people how they should conduct their sexual lives.

You pretty much nailed it, Loyaltexan, when you said that legislation based on the Bible is no more desirable than legislation based on the principles of any other religion.

Loyaltexan: Just to throw this out there, the Christian Bible's stance on homosexuality is worded equally, within Leviticus, to it's stance on not eating ham, not shaving your beard, and a long laundry list of mundane "abominations" that have no bearing on modern life.

Christians pick and choose what they want to believe is "against God."

JC- You are very correct, though we do have some strict believers in the word of God and most call them extremist!! I call them the least hypocritical of believers!!! And on a Mormon note, (which I am not Mormon) I can see polygamy being needed in a christian society in which there are more women than men, as a womans purpose is to assist in procreation and can not according to Christians, procreate without a man, whom she is given to by a man of god. So those who do not believe in polygamy I pose the question of, if women outnumbered men on our planet, how does a woman do her duty if all the men are taken!!!???

Then the problem lies with you, not him. I heard him say, "same-sex couples should be able to get married." I didn't hear him say anything about Bush or it being anyone's fault. If anything, it is YOUR fault for being so childish and so blatantly disrupting this country's political discourse. Joe the Electrician....I believe that the President thought long and hard about the issue and changed his mind for whatever reason. It may cost him some votes or he may gain some. Either way, like any normal citizen, he should be able to amend his position. Romney though can't afford to change his because he's already flip-flopped so much that he'd loose all credibility. But worse, his cult would throw him out, the people that he has and always will answer to. Mormons are to secretive to let the rest of the world know what it is that they are doing. You think you'd get any kind of transparency from him? Anyone the believes someone found some gold tablets a hundred years ago under a bush that told him to start a new religion is just as wack as Jimmy Jones. Romey has values? What a joke. This man moved his fortune off shore. I guess not having loyalty to your country and only to your money is to be considered a value now too.

This opinion is not directed at you but rather all the homophobics in this country and world; as for the LBGT...everyone needs to keep out of their bedrooms. and the only reason ROMNEY and the rest of those GOP clowns are against Gay Marriage is to get the backing of the Christian Right. Obama is doing this for the right reasons, I believe he stands on equal rights for all Americans.

                    OBAMA/BIDEN 2012.

Joe the electrician - I think it is the other way around. From his acceptance speech to now, Obama has always supported gay rights. Romney is weak on the subject because he could lose over this but this is what got him elected Governor. Also I feel Romney doesn't care he just wants to keep his base happy. He's a business man first and the gay vote (and market are important to him. He's going to flip if he wants to win.

Joe: If you look at the bigger picture, taking a stand on any hot button social or religious issue alienates entire groups of people. In this case, religious independents.

I'm not even going to get started on you saying Romney is sticking to anything out of principle, because thats just laughable. Romney would suddenly pledge support for pregnant cat juggling if it were popular amongst Republicans.

If you're against gay marriage, don't marry a gay person. It's no more complicates than that. End of story. This is the biggest non issue of the election.

Ordinarily I would not consider a candidate's religion in voting. After all, we know that the Catholic Church is opposed to birth control and to divorce, yet the majority of American Catholics cheerfully ignore that. There is a huge difference however in the case of the LDS. The political positions the Church takes are the law of the land for the faithful. There is no way that Mr. Romney would be able to take a public opinion that differs from the official Church policy on something like same sex marriage. I don't question the right of Mormons to have this belief or to compel their members to obedience on it. I don't particularly want to give them the right to impose their religious values on me or on the rest of the country, however. Of course, I will say that applies to the Fundamentalist Christians as well. I am not convinced that God has deputized any of them to speak on His behalf...

At some point can somebody...ANYBODY...please explain to me how "traditional marriage" is threatened or endangered by allowing gay marriage?

Mr. Santorum says, "President Obama has consistently fought against protecting the institution of marriage from radical social engineering at both the state and federal level." Well, please, Mr. Santorum, from what, exactly, are we protecting the institution of marriage?

Gov. Perry's spokesperson says, "He is proud of North Carolina voters who last night elected to enshrine that definition in their constitution, joining Texas and an increasing number of states in the ongoing effort to defend marriage." Same question to Gov. Perry...from what are we defending marriage?

I would not normally go so far as to speak for God, but since we're talking about marriage as defined by God, if He's really got an issue with gay marriage then I think He's got this one and doesn't need us to watch His back on the matter.

                        Sure, it's actually pretty simple.

Truly traditional marriage was a property arrangement, i.e. the wife was the property of the husband. It was predicated on gender-inequality, that men are superior to women and should have dominion over them. In that context, same-sex marriage makes little sense. If a man's ability to own a woman is a result of gender, then can a man own another man or a woman another woman? How would you know which partner was dominant and which subservient? (Incidentally, this same understanding underpins traditional polygamy - if a wife is property of her husband, then it makes sense that a man can have many wives, but that a wife cannot have multiple husbands.)

Marriage has, in recent decades, been redefined as a union of equals. In this context, barring same-sex marriage makes little sense. If both parties are equal, if men and women are equal, then why limit the unions to only opposite-sex couples?

That is the threat. Accepting same-sex marriage means recognizing marriage as a union of equals and therefore recognizing the equality of the sexes. That is the tradition at stake here which the conservatives are defending so vigorously. Just don't call it a "war on women." They're really only at war with women's equality.

I should note here that this is not an original argument. It was presented, essentially, as part of Justice Vaughn Walker's judgement that CA Prop 8 was unconstitutional. And the religious right, led by Phyllis Schlafly, has made the same argument in reverse in their opposition to the Equal Rights Amendment, arguing that if they guarantee gender equality in the constitution, then they would have to recognize same sex marriage as a result. I actually agree with Schlafly on this point, and that's a very rare thing, though we are still on opposite sides since she openly opposes equality.

Civil marriage is a civil right. No other legal contract is limited by the sex of the contracting parties and neither should this one be. What people do in their own churches is their business and should not infringe on the civil rights of anyone else.

Romney in his own words said he didn't care about the poor, but he sure cares about more money for himself and his rich friends even if the poor do starve.

Am I the only one getting creeped out by the right wing fascination with having sex with animals? I think Freud would recommend that they all avoid the barnyard.

Why are Republicans so obsessed with bestiality? From their obsession regarding gay marriage, it's clear that the only reason they are married to members of the opposite sex is because gay marriage is illegal in may states. How else would it "endanger marriage"?

So now Romoney needs to decide if he'll support gay marriage AND immigration - he's got a lot of deciding to do! All he has to do is put his weathervane head in the air and the wind will tell him which was to decide.

Seems easy to me - but hard for Mittbot to make a decision.

Politically, Mr. Romney has a conundrum. Polls indicate over 50% support for equal access to the rights and benefits of marriage, but his political base simply will not allow him to express any support for such access.

raddave. ah but you are mistaken. When Obama met with Boehner and McConnell he was reminded by them that the Republican universal health care bill introduced by Sen. Dole in 1979 contained a mandate and participation of the private health insurance sector and if Obama wanted any Republican support for his health care bill he needed both in the bill.

So, Obama, naive as he was then, and eager to work with Republicans, put the mandate and private insurance provision in. And lo and behold not one Republican voted for it.

Obama learned and learned well. Never trust a Republican at the bargaining table.

Ridiculous and manufactured controversy that is part of the bankster cult's depopulation agenda.

Personally I htink it is great that young folks get together.

But if young folks of the opposite sex get together in decreasing numbers and young folks of the same sex get together in increasing numbers, how long is it before we have no more young folks?

What importance to sex does a piece of paper from the state "licensing" marriage have these days?

A piece of paper called the Constitution is being trashed.

Food and gas prices are out of sight.

People are out of jobs - it is MUCH higher than the B.S. 9% unemplyment number.

After the cost of the bankster orchestrated wars, neither we nor ALL our future generations can pay off our national debt.

Our freedoms are being stripped from us on an accelerating basis.

Seems like these idiot banksters and their puppet politicians - boh parties - could figure out that less children = less population for them to make into slaves and suck dry?

At least there is now a clear distinction on ONE issue between the presedential candidates - giving the majority an opportunity to be heard at the polls in November.

Ron Paul is the ONLY candidate not bought and paid for by the banksters and he is ignored by the bankster controlled media which needs to propagandize and promote controversy instead of real news.

Maybe marriage should be a sacred bond between a man and several women, or a sacred bond between several men and several women, or a sacred bond between a man and his guns, or a sacred bond between a transsexual and a billy goat. What does it matter, as long as it's a sacred bond?

Obama has endless dinners at the White House, plus the correspondent's dinner inviting all of the Hollywood elite to dine at the tax payer's expense. Cracking jokes like he is Chris Rock, thinking he is all that. Michelle in her $20,000 designer gown smiling and lapping up the attention. Not even Reagan and Nancy had more dinners with the Hollywood set than these two. Michelle Obama is well known for hating dinners that are given for our troops because she finds them boring. However, roll out George Clooney et al and it is a different story. The Democrats care as much about the American people as the Republicans do. There are more wealthy Democratic Senators than Republican Senators. If you don't believe me look it up. This country is stuck between the Devil and the deep blue sea.

Julia - how do you look in the mirror with the lies you post? First, the Obama's have had no more dinners at the White House than any other President. Michelle Obama look beautiful and, as most other First Lady's, had costly gowns which SHE pays for. So the Obama's have the Hollywood set at the White House - your point? Your comment about Michelle Obama hating the dinners with the troops is a total and disgraceful lie. She and Jill Biden do more for our troops than any other First Lady and VP's wife - ever - and they love doing it. You are a damned liar but let me guess, you probably call yourself a Christian too, right? Your despicable!

So what if there are more wealthy Democratic Senators than Republican ones? That's absolutely true but none of them are complaining about the possibility of being taxed more. Again - what's your stupid point you damned liar?

I am guessing but do you think the democrats passed the Ryan budget? I remember the democrats stopping that bill last year to only have the republicans pass it again.

That bill takes from the poorest and the neediest of our nation and even takes from our wounded veterans to give to the rich and increases the deficit to do it.

One party does care more for America. Democrats are at least willing to talk about jobs, but it is a total no-go if any plan involves one cent from the rich as that is the only people republicans care about.

Then there is the republican drive to take over women's reproductive rights. Want to lose your rights then vote for a republican especially in the state where you live.

Yeah, right, like there is no difference.

                              Andrew61....THIS shows Romney's "true face".

                              On Romney's character....

Sometimes, this facet of Romney’s personality isn’t so subtle. In July 1996, the 14-year-old daughter of Robert Gay, a partner at Bain Capital, had disappeared. She had attended a rave party in New York City and gotten high on ecstasy.

Three days later, her distraught father had no idea where she was. Romney took immediate action. He closed down the entire firm and asked all 30 partners and employees to fly to New York to help find Gay’s daughter. Romney set up a command center at the LaGuardia Marriott and hired a private detective firm to assist with the search. He established a toll-free number for tips, coordinating the effort with the NYPD, and went through his Rolodex and called everyone Bain did business with in New York , and asked them to help find his friend’s missing daughter. Romney’s accountants at Price Waterhouse Cooper put up posters on street poles, while cashiers at a pharmacy owned by Bain put fliers in the bag of every shopper. Romney and the other Bain employees scoured every part of New York and talked with everyone they could prostitutes, drug addicts anyone.

That day, their hunt made the evening news, which featured photos of the girl and the Bain employees searching for her. As a result, a teenage boy phoned in, asked if there was a reward, and then hung up abruptly. The NYPD traced the call to a home in New Jersey , where they found the girl in the basement, shivering and experiencing withdrawal symptoms from a massive ecstasy dose. Doctors later said the girl might not have survived another day.

Romney's former partner credits Mitt Romney with saving his daughter's life, saying, "It was the most amazing thing, and I’ll never forget this to the day I die."

So, here's my epiphany: Mitt Romney simply can’t help himself. He sees a problem, and his mind immediately sets to work solving it, sometimes consciously, and sometimes not-so-consciously. He doesn't do it for self-aggrandizement, or for personal gain. He does it because that's just how he’s wired.

Many people are unaware of the fact that when Romney was asked by his old employer, Bill Bain, to come back to Bain & Company as CEO to rescue the firm from bankruptcy, Romney left Bain Capital to work at Bain & Company for an annual salary of one dollar.

When Romney went to the rescue of the 2002 Salt Lake Olympics, he accepted no salary for three years, and wouldn't use an expense account. He also accepted no salary as Governor of Massachusetts .

Character counts!! (and yes...that's worth reading again!)

Julia-1073949 - Your comments are so full of crap it's scarey. Since President Obama took office, the First Lady has been one of the strongest advocates for military families and military children in this country. Try goggling "Michelle Obama military families". Next time check your facts before your fingers embarrass you.

Whatever Romney says today probably want be what he means tomorrow. He'll have to see how this goes over first.

The Romney supporters certainly are a nasty little bunch, aren't they. Did anyone tell them that you have to be 18 to vote?
