Romney renews opposition to same-sex marriage

FORT LUPTON, Colo. -- President Obama this afternoon announced his support of same-sex marriage. But Mitt Romney here in this swing state reiterated his opposition to it.

Romney's message here at a carefully calibrated appearance was to tout his energy policy. But Colorado has been embroiled in a contentious fight over civil unions that stretched into midnight last night in the Colorado House. Republicans in the House here effectively ended the bid for civil unions last night by blocking a vote on the measure.

It was something Romney was asked about in four separate local TV interviews.

“I think people have differing views on marriage, and I respect people's different views," Romney told Denver NBC affiliate KUSA. "When I served as governor of my state, this issue arose -- same sex marriage and civil unions.  I pointed out that I'm in favor of traditional marriage between a man and a woman, and I don't favor civil union or gay marriage.”

He added, "I know that a lot of people have questions on social issues and differing views, and I understand these are very tender and personal issues and people are entitled to reach their own conclusions and their own views.

Romney told a local FOX reporter that while he did not support civil unions like those which the Colorado bill would have allowed, he does support certain rights for gay couples, like hospital-visitation rights.

"[W]hen these issues were raised in my state of Massachusetts, I indicated my view, which is I do not favor marriage between people of the same gender, and I do not favor civil unions if they are identical to marriage other than by name" Romney said. "My view is the domestic partnership benefits, hospital-visitation rights and the like are appropriate, but that the others are not."

When pressed by reporters after his event here today, Romney refused to comment further on his views on the North Carolina constitutional amendment, passed last night, which bans same-sex marriage and civil unions, or the president's upcoming interview today.

Romney's position opposed to same-sex marriage has been consistent since his days as Massachusetts governor, when he fought unsuccessfully to block or reverse a state Supreme Court decision allowing same sex marriage in the Bay State.

But in his 1994 Senate bid, he wrote a letter to the Log Cabin Republicans, in which he declared he'd be better on gay rights, which he equated to "civil rights," than his opponent -- the late Ted Kennedy.

“I am more convinced than ever before that as we seek to establish full equality for America’s gay and lesbian citizens, I will provide more effective leadership than my opponent," Romney wrote. He added: “I believe we can and must to better. If we are to achieve the goals we share, we must make equality for gay and lesbians a mainstream concern. My opponent cannot do this. I can and will.”

With the interviews concluded, Romney pressed on with a speech focused on energy policy. In his first visit to this energy-rich, November battleground state since losing Colorado's caucus to Rick Santorum in February, Romney called an expansion of oil and gas production key to jumpstarting the economy, and doubled down on his attack on what he called President Obama's "old and outdated perspective."

In his brief remarks here, standing on the site of an old oil and gas well, Romney called for expanding drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, the Gulf of Mexico, and off the continental shelf. He praised the expansion of drilling and exploration for natural gas -- a major industry here at the foot of the Rocky Mountains -- and predicted the jobs and low-cost energy created by growing the domestic energy industry could also fuel a boom in manufacturing.

"If we have low cost energy, which is a major input for all sorts of manufacturing you’re going to see a resurgence of manufacturing in America," Romney said. "America has lost manufacturing jobs we’re going to bring them back with a powerhouse of energy that is going to fuel a growth in manufacturing like we have not seen in decades."

Romney's also accused the Obama administration of failing to adapt policy to match modern energy production techniques like hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling, which have the potential to reshape America's production and consumption of energy in the future.

"I happen to think that the president’s policies are shaped by a perspective that’s old and outdated," Romney said. "You see, liberals in the past thought we didn’t have that much energy in this country and therefore we would have to go begging around the world to the people that have it."

Romney made only passing mention of renewable fuels in his vision for America's energy future - beyond taking a swipe at the failed, administration-backed solar energy company Solyndra, and Democrats seized on his comments today as further evidence of what they said was Romney's fealty to big oil, and the donations the industry has funneled to Romney's campaign.

"The real question is why Mitt Romney has embraced a backward-looking strategy of pushing to give more tax breaks to the big oil and gas companies and eliminate protections against Wall Street speculators manipulating oil prices. These policies may help the big oil donors that Mitt Romney has cultivated, but they will do nothing to relieve middle class families’ pain at the pump,” Obama campaign spokesperson Lis Smith said in a statement.

Expect the war over energy -- and who's polices would be better for consumers at the gas pump and beyond -- to continue. This afternoon Romney holds another campaign event in yet another major oil and gas producing state, Oklahoma. Tonight, he'll attend a fundraiser there Harold Hamm, who made billions in shale oil development, and is one of Romney's top energy advisers.

What a surprise!

The president says he is for same sex marriage and suddenly Romney has a point a view; the opposite.

Typical negative response from the obstructionist party.

So, folks it is up to us to decide if we are going to move forward and treat everybody the same, or if we are going to continue with discriminatory policies, that only benefit some, and deny rights to others.

And that is not only with gay marriage, but with Social Security, Medicare, and Energy Policies. One group is determined to destroy our environment -more than what already is- just to give a ficticious "boom"to the economy, with no regards for our ecology.

Please think carefully before our next election.

This IS the difference.

The president realizes he must represent the nation, and not just his own personal views. He also has the guts and leadership to come out on this issue with a clear statement, even though it will means some loss of votes.

Romney on the other hand has no core or leadership, and will pander to his base--especially until the convention, and then will pander to the real power in the background (Norquist, Koch brothers, etc.).

Obama was against before to be for, Obama change the course according to the wind, only social issues can help Obama to be reelected, Obama is not personally in favor of GBTE marriage, this is not the teaching of Rev. Write and most African Americans are against as well, but he need the votes simple like that. Romney never was in favor of GBTE marriage like 50 % of the population and 30 states including the liberal state of California , North Carolina reject GBTE marriage with 60 % of the votes , now Democrats want to move their convention to a gay friendly state. LOL

Actually Mitt Romney flip flops on many issues, same with abortion. None the less if you read what he states, which is why I find him UNQUALIFIED to govern and serve the public, is he caters to one decision or point of view, when in fact he has stated there are multitudes of differing views. Him working under law, but favoring one "opinion" over another means he cannot discern between personal matters and serving the best interest of all.... basically he practices discrimination or would, as much of the opposition to "gay marriage" again is based in religious morals and such-people argue over the constitution especially Republicans-when they still have not been able to accomplish or separate "CHURCH from STATE". They use poor and one sided judgement, and discriminate and have for decades.

President Obama in 2004 when he was asked, “What in [his] religious faith calls [him] to be against gay marriage?” He stated, “what I believe, in my faith, is that a man and a woman, when they get married, are performing something before God, and it’s not simply the two persons who are meeting.” Although the president believed in civil unions back then, he was clear that marriage should be preserved as God’s model for marriage.

It was proven last night the AA commutity's in NC made not one iota of a difference.

The BOTTOM LINE is that the Amendment 1 passed due to an overwhelming support from White, Conservative Republican voters - which is consistent with what we know about discriminatory laws of any kind in the this entire country.

Never mind that President Obama came out AGAINST the ban long before election day community.

2nd point -- I no longer have any use for Chris matthews. Comcast needs to find some to better fill that lead in time slot. Also NBC needs to find a replacement for David Gregory - he is irrelevent. My pick would be to hire Norah O'Donnell back from CBS and let her host Meet the Press.

    Sure,

First, I'd like to say many of those religious objectors in the pulpit and choir are the biggest homosexuals. I seeded a story about Pastor Eddie Long on News Vine.

Secondly, I'm no expert; but I'll share my input.

Thirdly, I'll say that at one point most of the conversation in the Black community about the LBGT community was sheer disgust. Not so much because of the discriminatory aspect; but because their wanted instant gratification.

One specific example was Lt. Daniel Choi and his rant about feeling like a battered housewife for having to wait so long.

My first thought was B----h, what if you had to endure a long 400+ years from when my people stepped off the boat. There were bloody sieges, battering, bruising from slave whips, lynching past & present, familes seperated from loved ones, false incarerations which is the same as seprations in a sense, and repeated lies about our existence being a mere consequence of social and economic injustices due to the perspcection being unequal to other races on this planet; only to live fight again.

That fight really didn't come to fruition until 40 years ago. We had to get through 2 Civil Rights Act for that type of equality. Jim Crow was prevelant until the past 40 years. The 1st Civil Rights Act came after the Civil War of 1863 and the 2nd Civil Rights Act came when President LBJ signed it in 1964 and later the voting right in 1968.

Yes, we do feel the pain of discrimination. But, what white gay people don't feel is the pain of having dark skin.

As I see we have one the best President's in the history of this country because he feels everyone's pain whether it be color, povetry, false incarnerations, gay, sex, gender, and no gender.

Because you strongly oppose same sex people, presumably.

At least you're not trying some silly excuse to cover up your hatred and bigotry, you're straightforward and honest in your malevolence. It sure is a refreshing change from the hypocrisy of those who oppose gay marriage but try to claim that they've got gay friends and don't really hate them.

      #2.17 - Wed May 9, 2012 10:30 PM EDT

It's just a conclusion without an argument. Your comment on the other hand... "malevolence, hatred, bigotry, hypocrisy..." is not any better.

The GLBT community would have more success obtaining equal rights if they'd stop fighting for the name "marriage" and gunning down all opponents with vile adjectives. Two men, two women, and two heterosexuals are totally different types of unions. If the GLBT community stopped pushing for the same title (i.e., "marriage"), they'd find equal rights would fall into place quicker and easier. Instead, the GLBT community is being stubborn, blind, and deaf about this one simple fact -- "Marriage” is the only term that makes the union between the two sexes sacred. Americans don't want to see that redefined because there’s no other term to replace it once it’s gone. Why won't the GLBT community compromise? They must FORCE Americans to drop their beliefs -- choose us over GOD, they say. Choose us over children's rights to a mother's love and a father's love in the home. Choose us over the mountains of sociological evidence that children need both a mom and a dad -- they only need "two people." (BTW, the GLBT community is not any better at staying together in life-long monogamous relationships than heterosexuals -- so the "two people" argument, besides being asinine, is MOOT.) Men and women are DIFFERENT. The way they teach, nurture, play with, and PROTECT children is proven to be different! If you don't believe this, go to school and take Sociology classes (and Biology, and Family Cultures, and Child Psych for good measure). Children deserve both a mother and father. Period.

So because I'm opposed to redefining marriage (which to me, is the equivalent of supporting father's rights and children's rights in particular) I'm "Silly, malevolent, hateful, bigoted, and hypocritical" -- I can't have GLBT friends, CM-6969? Maybe not friends like you, but I didn't start this campaign to re-define marriage. Your camp is attacking people's most precious beliefs -- God, family, and democracy! I say democracy because the mayor of San Francisco granting marriage licenses to gays after the state of CA voted NO to same-sex marriage is a slap in face to the democratic process and everything America stands for. And if he hadn't done that, the "right" wouldn't be so up in arms about "protecting" marriage. You guys SCREWED UP!

And finally, if the US constitution is changed to accommodate GLBT marriage the way it was changed with Civil Rights, then churches who refuse to marry homosexual couples could get sued or fined. Which is what I believe the GLBT community really wants, but is trying to keep everyone from believing will happen.

For millions of believers, it is solemn mockery before God to marry homosexuals – God created man and woman to be together. Churches should be allowed to refuse homosexual marriage if it is against their beliefs. And if the GLBT community respected that, there would be no war over marriage. Just civil unions, marriage, and peace!

Hopefully, Obama will win a second term and be able to make bold decisions both on judicial issues (upsetting the near-obscene Republican--appointed judicial advantage on the federal courts and higher); and perhaps finally tackling America's War on Drugs. First of all, Willard cannot delineate what he believes are the rights of the LGBT's because he like all of his supporters are hell bent on opposing any and everything that the President says or does. President Obama voiced his personal opinion about gay marriage and did say that it should be handled at the state level. With that said 30 states have already banned gay marriage and some even civil unions. What difference does it really make if he supports gay marriage if their is not going to be any kind for Federal legislation to acknowledge his support for gay marriage. To me it was a waste of air time. If the politicians and the pundints aren't going to give the facts with a reality check then why get the people all stirred up thinking that something momentous just happened. Sure he is the 1st Pres. to make such a bold statement, but that was all it was, a statement without any legs to stand on.

Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve! Wake up America!

What if Steve happens to be a real nice man, that toves Adam, and takes care of him?

We are talking about humans here. For all I care, Eve is the nick-name of some guy. Please look beyond yor ideas about what "must be". People need to have someone to love and trust in their lives, it does not matter if that person is a man or a woman, old or young.

            Sheila Mitchell

God help us! Obama just wants the gay vote! I hope this country doesn't give in to his belief! Marriage is between a man and a woman! It is Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve! Wake up America!

If they want to choose that lifestyle that is their choice, but we do not have to agree with them getting married.

            Correction: Sheila,

You do not have to agree with it. That's what makes it so great about America; everyone has a voice. You're in the minority though.

OK, then we should repeal all the special rights that married people get under current laws. (And believe me, there is a long, long list of them.)

Excuse me miss-your not marrying anyone-why don't you worry about your own plans and family/problems, obviously someone else's marriage is not yours to engage in unless your invited. Then again people with real issues often meddle in others to escape their own. The heterosexual entitlement to rights in American is ending. Good day.

How is it ending. When you have 32 states that have banned Gay Marriage and only 4 that allow it. How is it ending, just because you messiah said he supports it now, only on a state by state level.

            How is it ending?

Give Mittens about 5 or ten minutes, he has to consult his etch a sketch experts on which way he should reply next. Should he flip or should he flop or should be flap or should be flub or should he deny he said it before he said it or should he deny it after he said it. All of Mittens beliefs are cast in water so they can take whatever shape he needs them in to fit the occasion.

              We're stuck in defending a Non-Issue:

              God defines marriage!

Government can define civil unions if they wish.

Where is separation to Church and State when 'we' need it!

So Joe, Arne and Clooney dragged Obama to accept gay marriage. Or did Obama see an issue he could champion? Wonder why he didn't come out for it before the NC vote?

I kinda agree with rich48, perhaps I will be called a hater now. But what extra benefits does marriage entail then a civil union? Is it about taxable income and deductions. Seriously I don't know. Would it not be better to just allow those benefits to be the same for civil unioned people and married people?

I agree with civil unions the ability for hospital visitation rights, right to get insurance benefits etc. However, how are gay people being unable to attend a church marriage service a denial of their civil rights? Why isn't a civil union enough? Can't they just do some type of bonding/pledging ceremony?

Not to seem uncaring, but this really is not a big issue with me, one way or the other. Funny how the left and the right have exploding heads about this issue. Whether they can marry or not won't affect me either way. I have my beliefs and others have theirs, I'm not a "values" voter. Its about the economy for me.

Am I a bigot? If I didn't want to sanction the gay lifestyle because of fear, hatred or similar feelings that are not thought out, then yes, that fits the definition of bigotry; however, I do not prescribe to irrational animosity, and I do associate with, respect and have friends that are gay. At the same time I prescribe to promotion of the family as the best means to human fulfillment.
The most common response from pro-gay-marriage advocates to the above statement is that allowing gay marriage will improve love and family. I respect that as their belief, but I do not believe it is well thought out or researched. Even more relevant is the point that advocates of same-sex marriage do not push it as a commitment of love, and most don't want the paper certificate. Those who I speak to want acceptance, property and visitation rights, and a cessation of abuses.
Another argument I often hear is that it is not right to withhold the "right" of marriage to those who are "born gay." Often this is accompanied by invoking a civil rights era sense of indignation.
As science has indicated I do recognize predispositions, but not predetermination of sexual orientation. Science seems to indicate a complex interplay of various factors in sexual preference. Some biased scientists on both sides have attempted to show one way or the other and the theory of born this way or not simply doesn't jive with science.
As for the "right" to marry, some have attempted to denigrate the institution as originating in property rights of the middle centuries. I doubt that this is an accurate description of how most people feel about their marriage, today or in the past. To me marriage is a sacred commitment that is a contract between my wife, myself, the community and our sense of spirituality. Good marriage and families are the basis of fostering supportive and nurturing environments that improve our community. There is a right granted to american citizens of equal protection under the law, which can be met by civil unions and achieve legal rights, but this misses the acceptance portion which therefore becomes the primary purpose of those in favor of gay marriage.
In countries where same sex marriage has been adopted it has resulted in a decrease in the overall number of marriages and a dilution of the commitment and nurturing power of home life. Same sex marriage is not about a commitment to community, selflessness and good principles. Most of those I speak to see it as a tool for their own devices, a path to acceptance. Which to me, contrasts heavily with the productive function of marriage in society.
The next argument I commonly hear is, "well a fine job marriage is doing of promoting selflessness, commitment and good principles." That is a valid point. High divorce rates, imperfect homes and marriages damage our society. That doesn't change the fact that strong and positive families are the answer and strong families are best when they include a loving father and mother who through their contrasting nature are best equipped to nurture children. There are myriad forces working against strong families.
It is sad that we hear more about the "rights" of the gays in this debate and less about responsibility to a community. Promiscuity, long working hours, a terrible education system, and lack of commitment harm children. Where is their march, their representation?
I will readily admit that the best same sex unions are stronger and more positive than the worst traditional families. That does not change the fact that in general a man and women who follow good principles together are best equipped to raise families. It does not change the fact that the point of marriage is bearing, nurturing and supporting children. The fact remains that the strongest push for same sex marriage is not for the benefit of progeny, but a struggle for acceptance by an abused class. A better effort, and one I do support is the removal of the abuse and disparity without defiling marriage.

The only problem is that republicans don't want gays to have the right to civil union either.

They only have a book written 2000 years ago and doesn't have none of the new stuff like that scientist have found a gay gene.

The real question is to the religious, if you had a test done and found out you were going to have a gay child, would you abort it or would you love it just the way that God created it?

Would you then believe that God created gay people just like he created straight people and why would he want to deny any of his people the right to live their lives in dignity?

Do you really think God would pick a book's beliefs above his people?

Ya, you missed the follow science on the "gay gene" not peer reviewed, not repeatable not true. Try looking at some studies of genetically equal twins. The correlation in sexual preference is small. Science does not have a firm answer on this one. The truth is that many factors are at play.

I would neither abort a child that has a heart disorder (like missing a ventricle) nor I would do for a child that is Gay. But the real question to you is "Do you consider Gay to be an illness/sickness or a malfunction while the baby is forming?

I had a child with a heart disorder and new about it before she was born, she died at almost 4 year old after 3 operations. I also had a brother who was Gay and died of aids at 24, and loved him and accepted him with all my heart.

So what makes you the expert on republicans/independents or democrats that might have a different Idea than you have. , God does not send this things. This things just simply happen.

Yellowdog .. you do realize that civil marriage has absolutely NOTHING to do with religion? A couple doesn't need to go anywhere near a church in order go get married. Gays aren't asking to be married in a church (that's up to each church). They're asking for the right to be legally married in the eyes of the law.

                God defines marriage!

No, the government does. Just see how government tax breaks/benefits your religious marriage bestows without a state-issued marriage license.

No concerned I do not consider gay to be an illness or malfunction when you were forming. I believe that you are born the way you are with your sexual preferences in place and they are not a choice you make later in life.

Why would God want to deny you the same rights as others because you were how he made you? Why would people use religion as a crutch to take the rights away from other people?

I have no desire to deny human rights, however, same sex marriage is a sin that God will one day punish. The Bible says that the fear of God is the beginning of wisdom. The penalty for sin is death. All must choose to believe God's word or not. Choosing to ignore God is not wisdom in my mind, it is foolishness at a great price.

Most public opinion polls regarding gay marriage are conducted in big eastern cities. While they claim to represent a cross section of American society they are missing the real voters in this country. I hope Obama and his liberal handlers keep mis-reading the pulse of this country. The reaal issues are still the economy and jobs so keep ranting about gay marriage and watch what happens in November when we vote about the things that matter to the rest of us.

Allowing gays to marry is on the ballot this year in Maine, one of the most rural states in the union, currently saddled with a Republican state legislature, Tea Party governor and two Republican senators - and polling shows Mainers favor allowing gay couples to marry in Maine.

By all means please go and vote. I've lived in states from New Hampshire to California and Florida to Alaska and I've lived in countries with a much more socialist government than ours, they also had an average tax rate of 45% and an inheritage tax of 95%, so I know what I like and what I don't because I've seen it. My opinions are based on a lot of interaction with folks all over the world, my military service, and my religious beleifs. I may not know how everyone feels but I know the economy is the number one issue world wide and it's what is going to decide who I vote for. I've also lived in New York, Texas, Colorado, Wyoming, and Alabama. And guess what, I don't hate anyone. This country is great because we can decide these issues for ourselves and we don't have to follow anyone else.

Tango if the economy is really the deciding issue then you won't be voting for a republican.

The republicans want to follow England down the double dipped recession hole gotten by the austerity they have been pushing in England.

The republicans first move of taking a good economy with low unemployment and a surplus that our entire debt would have been paid off by 2010. Instead of the republicans not being conservative they decided to give tax cuts, start wars and then more tax cuts to the richest.

After they had created the biggest deficit in the history of our country, they then started hollering it was the democrats fault and especially President Obama.

Why would anyone with half a brain vote for a republican to return to their failed policies. Romney has hired mostly old bush advisers to be sure and continue the bush policies of taking from the poor to give to Romney and his rich friends.

Of course, republicans always want to take away the rights of others and call themselves the party of freedom.

Just like voter suppression the republicans are pushing. They think they should keep millions from voting all over our country to insure that maybe 2 or 3 people of the millions might vote illegally. Just the republicans taking away the rights of the many to serve their rich masters.

Just like the person-hood amendment the republicans are pushing. The republicans think they should keep million of women from having contraception and the right to choose for herself. Just the republicans once again taking away the rights of the many to serve their religious base.

The republicans seem to serve every special interest just not the needs of all Americans.

I think the president's actions speak much louder than words. He has had the backs of the LGBT community since he took office. What was said today just confirms in words what we all already know. The president believes we are all equal. But as well know, the right-wing social conservative members of the republican party want to go back to a time when some were considered more equal than others.

We have evolved on this issue together. I haven't always supported gay marriage, but I do now. The golden rule, and putting myself in the position of another is how I look at this. How would I want to be treated? I'd want people to accept my choices and love me where I'm at and not where they think I should be in life. Good stand Mr. President and I love you for it!

President Obama 2012. Moving forward and not looking back. I'm a progressive; not primitive!

It is a sign of intelligence to reevaluate ones position as situations change. To not do so is idiotic. To change ones mind because the political wind has shifted or in order to get votes - now that is not so good. Obama is a sleaze and will say or do whatever he must to win re-election!

deybee, that is a silly comment. No a man cannot give birth to a child, but two men can be loving parents and raise children. When you see some of the heterosexual couples, you shudder to think they are responsible for a tiny life. If a couple is loving and kind and can afford to raise kids, I have no problem with the adopting or having surrogacy. I happen to be married to a man and conservative. However, I think that is common sense.

Hey CONCERNED CITIZEN...Romney has flipped positions like a cook does eggs, including his stance on civil unions, so many times that he would be the fastest cook at a Denny's during breakfast rush. Obama is obviously comfortable with his own faith in God, who is the ultimate judge according to the Bible. This issue is about CIVIL RIGHTS, and has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with religion. If you can't support it on moral grounds I understand your position, but you or I have NO right to limit the rights of others who don't fit into the Biblical mold. The world is changing and you may not like the changes, but it's going to happen either now or later.

I've just heard on TV that Barack said he was influenced by his two daughters in his decision to uphold gay marriage as his children said they had some of those people they went to school with. He just can't take all the credit for making that decision it seems. Kinda like putting some blame on the kids for his decision.

I recall hearing him say, as a presidential candidate, when asked his definition of marriage. He said marriage was between and man and a woman. Anything to get votes....to selling your soul to Satan.

Over recent years, I have heard some people say Barack was a hero. Heroes have honor, do not brag and do not blame others for any mistakes they might have made. Barack has done just the opposite of what a real hero would do. He is no hero. No surprise in that.

I know that the Muslims do not tolerate homos. They kill them. Although, I am anti-gay I definitely do not believe in doing something as hideous as that because they are different. It is plain and simple MURDER.

Now, I wonder how he will justify his stance on defending gay marriage to the Muslims because of his Muslim heritage on his father's side. Interesting, as it appears he doesn't really want to ruffle their feathers. Is that what you call being between a rock and a hard place perhaps?

I have some Cherokee blood in me, do I have to justify to the Cherokee Nations about my every belief?

Sometimes I wonder about the need of people like you to bring every grain of hate to the surface. Interesting right?

You are fortunate that you have a Cherokee heritage, one that is native to our country, who are patriotic Americans and not terrorists. They stand for America, not against her. I'm sure you would not have to justify your beliefs to them as they would respect what you believe, even if they might not agree. Barack's heritage, on his father's side, is of disrespect, just plain pure hatred and death for our great country.

Being how racist he was I was never allowed and it was never spoken about in our house that Dad was 1/4 Indian. If anyone knew he would lose his status in Arkansas of being better than others just because he was white.

And what would happen to you if you admitted that Muslims were just like any other people. True Muslims like true Christians are a non-violent people. Then there are pro-war proclaimed Christians. Are suddenly all Christians pro-war because some are? But, you have no problem making that jump for other people.

"Romulian Romney" does NOT know what to be for or against. The GOP/RNC "Speculator and Chief" is all for health care reform, and he wrote this law for the Federal Level. The GOP/RNC "Chicken and Chief" is to scared to stick to what he believes, and likes to flip-flop at will. Is therre same sex marriages on his home planet of Romulus? "Romulian Romney" has the cultural views of a Confederate States of America Politician in or around 1860. The GOP/RNC "Romulian and Chief" has the power of the Koch Brothers, and the "Tinkle Down" Economics of "Goofy Grover." The GOP/RNC "Speculator and Chief" has NO need to think for himself because his Wall Street Speculator friends, will do all the thinking needed. Politically, the "Romulian" has the GOP/RNC "Hoodlum's On The Hill" to do the political fighting for the Romulian. In the US Senate, the "Insane McCain Clan, and the "Mickey Mouse Mich McConnell Club" will fight for the GOP/RNC "Chicken and Chief." The GOP/RNC "Romulian" should go to his "Quiet Room" to just poltically hide from life. "Romulian Romney" has been hiding economically "Quiet Room" for all of his cheap "Speculative" life.

People DO change their minds. We all do. With Obama, it's evident that he is just catering to votes. You know what they say, "if you don't stand for something, you will fall for anything".

How SAD!!!!! Are we all playing GOD!!!! What happened to this generation????? How are we can be so blind, deaf and cripple on the WORD OF GOD??? Are we not AFRAID of the Divine Justice? Come on PEOPLE OF GOD, or we should not be called that anymore in this blessed country of the United States of America. Do we really are not even considering anything that comes from GOD??? Who are we listen or maybe serve in our lives??? There are only two places we can go to HEAVEN or to HELL.... Where do you would like to go when your life ends in this journey that is called LIVE? We should LOVE all our brothers and sisters, but also we have to condemn the ways that people are behaving that doesn't agree with God's words. There is only one right way because GOD said so, and that is a marriage between a man and a woman. We all can have our own opinions, we all can fight in this issue, but if you want to offend and not obey GOD's Commandments, is your own decision, but please don't pushed this issue on this Country that our God has been so good.

For the ones that are reading this and don't have any idea of what I am talking about and perhaps you have never read the Bible, please read:

Genesis 2:20-24: But for Adam no suitable helper was found. 21 So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs[g] and then closed up the place with flesh. 22 Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib[h] he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. 23 The man said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’ for she was taken out of man. 24 That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.

Ephesian 5:3-7 3 But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people. 4 Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving. 5 For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person—such a person is an idolater —has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.[a] 6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God’s wrath comes on those who are disobedient. 7 Therefore do not be partners with them.

See, Patty, if you believe that God created all, then She created gay people as well. You should be very worried to condemn God for what She created. You are judging God.

But, to bring this back to rational thought: this is not a Christian country. While you may have your beliefs, no matter how ridiculous I think you are, you may not codify those beliefs into law.

The Equal Protection Clause means something. Got it?

Sorry for your views regarding this issue. I really hope you have PEACE AND JOY in your heart. For your information this is a CHRISTIAN COUNTRY. USA has more Christians than any country in the world. Please write the facts. If you want go to :

Religion in the United States is characterized by both a wide diversity in religious beliefs and practices, and by a high adherence level. According to recent surveys, 83 percent of Americans identify with a religious denomination, 40 percent state that they attend services nearly every week or more, and 58 percent say that they pray at least weekly.[1] A majority of Americans report that religion plays a "very important" role in their lives, a proportion unique among developed nations.[2] Many faiths have flourished in the United States, including both later imports spanning the country's multicultural immigrant heritage, as well as those founded within the country; these have led the United States to become one of the most religiously diverse countries in the world.[3]

The majority of Americans (60% to 76%) identify themselves as Christians, mostly within Protestant and Catholic denominations, accounting for 51% and 25% of the population respectively.[4] Non-Christian religions (including Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism etc.), collectively make up about 3.9% to 5.5% of the adult population.[4][5][6] Another 15% of the adult population identifies as having no religious belief or no religious affiliation.[4] When asked, about 5.2% said they did not know, or refused to reply.[4] According to the American Religious Identification Survey, religious belief varies considerably across the country: 59% of Americans living in Western states (the "Unchurched Belt") report a belief in God, yet in the South (the "Bible Belt") the figure is as high as 86%.[4]

The bible belt was also the home to slavery. Didn't make it right.

Many people are non religious, or non christian.

The middle east has even pulled back on clerics controlling the public.

What you do Patty, is your business. Don't try to make us conform.

Same with gays. Leave them alone.

See Patty, here is the problem that you have. It doesn't matter if there is one Christian or one million Christians. Number does not make a country Christian or not. And if you hang your hat on numbers...when that changes, and another religion is more prevalent, do you lose your rights?

No, we are not a Christian Country because the Founders determined that we would not be. That is what the First Amendment is about, and Jefferson tells us what he meant in his letter to the Danbury Baptists, where we find the first use of the phrase "WALL OF Separation. The Founders also reiterated this in the Treaty with Tripoli, where they state plainly that the United States is not a Christian country. This treaty was developed during Washington's Presidency and was signed by President John Adams, after unanimous approval in Congress. Note: Washington and Adams were FOUNDERS!

So your beliefs are not important to the debate. While they matter to you, they don't matter to me.

What DOES matter is the 14th Amendment of the Constitution. READ IT!

I noticed that a post on here got collapsed a while back. I assumed that it was vulgar and obscene. When I oponed it, it was just a few words about FOX sticking to what it does best, and not pretend to be a real "news" organization.

And people are allowed to collapse such a message???? WOW....the right wing fanatics are out in full force. And they sure don't want to hear or read opposing views.

I wonder if they can collapse ALL the posts they will read on here about President Obama's now sensible position on same sex marriage.
