RNC official says Romney 'still deciding' on immigration

Updated 12:53 p.m. - Mitt Romney found himself in a difficult position -- and on the receiving end of an attack by President Obama's campaign -- after an RNC official suggested the presumptive Republican nominee is "still deciding" on his position on immigration.

Bettina Inclan, the director of Hispanic outreach for the Republican National Committee, appeared to suggest the former Massachusetts governor's immigration position was still very much up in the air.

Mitt Romney addresses a crowd of supporters during a rally May 8.

"As a candidate, to my understanding, he's still deciding what his position on immigration is," Inclan said at a briefing for reporters on the party's outreach to Latinos.

The quote quickly exploded on Twitter, and the president's re-election campaign condemned the comment.

Inclan later tweeted that she had misspoken, and included a link to Romney's immigration policy.

"Over the past year Mitt Romney has proven time and time again that he is the most extreme presidential candidate in modern history on immigration," said Gabriela Domenzain, the Obama campaign's director of Hispanic press. "Mitt Romney has decided to be the most extreme presidential candidate on immigration; Hispanics and all Americans have heard it loud and clear."

Domenzain pointed in particular to the instances in the Republican primary in which Romney outflanked his opponents to their right. Romney had promised to veto the DREAM Act, and curiously suggested at a GOP presidential debate that his immigration policy involves "self-deportation."

Romney faces a serious deficit among Hispanic voters versus Obama, according to recent polling, a gap that means trouble for the Republican nominee this fall, and possibly spells long-term peril for the party.

That said, Romney has begun softening his language on immigration as he begins pivoting toward the general election. He said he's studying a proposal by Florida Sen. Marco Rubio -- a possible running mate for Romney -- to modify the DREAM Act to allow legal residency, but not citizenship, to illegal immigrants in a narrow set of circumstances.

Complicating matters for the Romney campaign, though, is the Obama campaign's uncontested advantage is Hispanic media. The president's campaign announced a second wave of Spanish-language radio and TV ads (focused on health care reform) on Tuesday.

I believe the one thing Romney has decided is that he wants to be president and he has been trying for years. Every answer he gives is calculated to that end. Maybe he should buy some air time and just beg people to vote for him. He could even shed a couple of tears. At least it would be good reality TV.

Romney may still be deciding on immigration. But the Romney team has made the decision that Obama was right regarding the funding of the auto industry. So the Romney Campaign has decided that the Author of “Let Detroit Go Bankrupt” should now take credit for Obama’s, at the time, courageous decision. The Romney Campaign’s hutzpah is unbelievable, and is only exceeded by their profound belief of how unbelievably stupid the American voters are! They really believe that they can tell them anything, no matter how outrageous!

      The following represent American History as might be preached by the Romney Campaign;

Romney’s great-great-grandfather, as part of Ponce De Leon’s expeditionary force that was looking for the fountain of youth in the New World, now known as Florida, suggested to Ponce, they were very close, that this might be a climate conducive to growing oranges, a fruit discovered in the Indies. Well the rest is history. Romney’s family was far from done when it came to the profound contributions to the American way of life.

Horatio Romney at the start of the American Revolution, he never gets credit, suggested the plan that brought the cannon to overlook Boston and the harbor. This forced the British to evacuate! It is no small wonder that a descendant ultimately became the Governor of Massachusetts!

Rock Romney’s plan to utilize immigrants, Irish and Orientals, for substandard wages resulted in making the trans-continental railroad’s completion financially possible. That hereto undisclosed family history played a significant role in molding Mitt Romney’s appreciation, as to the value, of the immigrant population. I make no claim to know the unheralded claims of all of Mitt Romney’s ancestors; therefore I call on others, which may have some undisclosed knowledge, to add it to this tribute of the Romney mystique!

Letting Detroit go bankrupt would have been the right thing to do. They would have reorganized as any bankrupt co. would. The difference was that Obama awarded 40% of GM to the unions. ( But don't forget folks, he doesn't buy votes)

            Reply#66 - Tue May 8, 2012 4:38 PM EDT

"Illegal" is the key word, not immigrant. My wife's children in the Phillipines must wait 15 years to join us legally. If they were in Mexico, they could walk of the border in 15 minutes illegally.

Romney has bee running for president for the last 4 to 6 years. Immigration has been in the conversation all this time and he still does not have a position. What a great leader he will make.

At least we all know what Ron Paul's opinion is. Which is to stop ILLEGAL immigration by giving ILLEGAL immigrants less benefits for coming into the US, ILLEGALLY.

This can be done by giving less incentives towards illegal immigrants, such as the free medical care and education they currently receive, as well as the benefits of having anchor babies. Also we could have our National Guard here in the US, instead of overseas, to protect the borders.

Yep Ron Paul knows what he wants to do. If they look illegal, let them go die out on the curb, once they are dead we can figure out if they were actually illegal or just didn't have their papers.. Hope its you found out there afterwards....

Or we can know if they're illegal Because they don't have their papers.

It is my understanding that a majority of the 10 to 20 million illegal immigrants in the US came here for better pay for minimum wage. As well as free benefits given through welfare. Welfare is payed by US citizens through taxes.

Why should people be payed to live here without even being legal citizens?

There would be a cut-off date on anchor-babies. Children born in the US after that date would no longer be considered a legal citizen if their parents are not. This does not apply to those already here legally before that date.

Unlike what you are suggesting, illegals will be deported rather than left to "go die out on the curb." Thanks for wishing that upon me by the way.

Dodo. Do you have papers? Remember your driver's license isn't proof you're a citizen.

I bet you don't walk around with proof. Maybe we should lock you up?

Actually, illegal immigrants are given an option to sign an agreement to accept voluntary departure. If they want to challenge deportability through trial, they are allowed to do so.

And yes, i have my "papers" proving that i've lived in the US since birth. No, i don't carry them on me everywhere i go because i don't need to.

There are legal immigrants and there are illegal immigrants. Trespassing is a crime. How is this difficult for people to understand?

So hypothetically lets say you are an Hispanic US citizen and you have your papers at home. Hope you make bail!!

Oh wait it doesn't matter we can't profile you could be white with a funny accent and be asked for your papers.

In other words look funny or talk funny you run the risk of being locked up until you can prove you are here illegally.

                    Romney committed voter fraud

Republican presidential front-runner Mitt Romney has survived the heated GOP nominating contest so far without attracting significant attention to what may become a general election issue: allegations that he committed voter fraud in 2010. In January 2010 the former Massachusetts governor proudly cast a ballot for Republican Scott Brown in the special election to replace the late Sen. Ted Kennedy. He didn’t own property in the state at the time, and had registered to vote listing his son’s unfinished basement as his residence. Massachusetts law defines a residence for voter registration purposes as “where a person dwells and which is the center of his domestic, social, and civil life.” Anyone found guilty of committing voter fraud faces up to five years behind bars and a fine of $10,000.

The issue was first raised last year, after long-shot GOP candidate Fred Karger traveled to Romney’s former community of Belmont and interviewed members of his former church — who informed Karger that the Romneys had moved — and their former realtor, who told him, “Oh, they moved to California.” Additionally, Karger claimed that Ann Romney told him that the couple lived in California.

You need to do some research into the massive democratic voter fraud in the 2008 presidential race.

Immigration policy should be easy, if you are here illegally, you are entitled to nothing. Apply for a Green Card, get a sponsor, Get a Job. If you are coming here for a hand out, Get out, you are not welcome.

I agree. If we are not welcome in these other countries without papers, why should we welcome them in ours? People seem to think we are hateful for feeling this way, but they will never fight to improve their own countries as long as they can come here and work illegally and send money home. People will never rise up and fight for change until they have no choice. They could make their country better, but they don't have to. This country allows this to go on because the middle class is being exploited paying for it, and the illegals are being exploited as well. The only people that are happy are the rich Republicans.

More Americans would be in favor of the Dream Act if there were a provision in there for the good people that do become citizens to pay Social Security for all the back payments they've missed. I, for one, will never vote to makes long-time illegal aliens citizens unless they can pay into Social Security all the money they have cheated the system out of. How good can we be to make citizens out of people who have never paid a dime into the tax system or Medicare, or Social Security just in time for them to retire and start collecting benefits when they never paid a dime into the programs that are barely afloat for those of us who have paid into them. Not only that but any extra money they have made, they sent down into Mexico instead of investing in our country which they pretend to have adopted as their own. They haven't adopted our country, they haven't even bothered to learn our language; they just managed to get our country to adjust to their lack of English. That's my opinion of a fair path to citizenship. Prove you've been here for twenty years and repay the taxpayers and social programs for that twenty years, and we'll grant citizenship. Until then, illegal immigrants should be given the same rights that undocumented Americans would have if they are found in their countries of origin with no papers (Wouldn't that be none? No health care, no job, no housing, no social service benefits, nothing)

                          Reply#77 - Tue May 8, 2012 4:49 PM EDT

Most illegal immigrants pay Social Security thru other people's or bogus SS numbers.

They never draw on it, they get no benefits from it. They just pay into it.

It's just fiction to think they pull from social security when they can't even get a valid number. And if they do get a valid SS account just in time to retire, just how much money do you think they can draw?

You have an awfully strange view of reality.

Bet you think they risk deportation and arrest by voting illegally also ?

Hell, go knock on the door of a house you know illegals are in. They won't even answer the door.

                          Hank,

Hank, most illegals aren't paying anything to Social Security. You think that the rich people who pay in cash are sending a check for their nanny to Social Security? No. Do you think that your roofer is contributing? No. There a few very small percent using fake social security numbers, but most of them are paying nothing in. My previous post was talking about the Dream Act or something like it that discusses the possibility of changing the status of illegals and making them citizens. If Social Security is destined to run out in just 20 years or whatever the statistics are right now, what will happen when you add five or ten or even 25 million people to it who have never paid anything in? What I am wondering is, how is this country going to support all of the illegals in their retirement? Whether we make them citizens or not, they still have to eat, they still need medical care. If you refuse to consider that, you are hiding your head in the sand. It is you who have a strange view of reality. They may not be able to collect from Social Security if the Dream Act isn't passed, but this country is not going to let old people starve in the streets, so something is going to happen whether you like it or not. I believe that my state's congress people are in favor of giving Social Security to illegal aliens. I have heard them voice that opinion. Just because my state happens to be extremely liberal doesn't mean the rest of them won't follow.
