Romney takes heat for ignoring 'treason' remark

EUCLID, OH -- Mitt Romney came to Ohio today with a message focused on jobs and the middle class, but it was his silence in response to an audience member's call for the president to be tried for treason that threatened to steal the political spotlight.

A woman in the audience asked Romney a question about the balance between the three branches of government under President Obama, which included an aside -- “And I do agree he should be tried for treason." Romney answered the woman's question without addressing the comment about treason, and his silence promtped an immediate protest from the Obama campaign.

"Time after time in this campaign, Mitt Romney has had the opportunity to show that he has the fortitude to stand up to hateful and over-the-line rhetoric and time after time, he has failed to do so," Obama campaign spokesperson Lis Smith said in a statement. "If this is the ‘leadership’ he has shown on the campaign trail, what can the American people expect of him as commander-in-chief?”

After the event, reporters approached Romney on the ropeline to ask him whether or not he also believed the president should be tried for treason.

"No," he told reporters from the Washington Post and New York Times. "No, of course not."

The event hearkens back to 2008, when Republican nominee Sen. John McCain was forced to correct attendees at his town hall events who incorrectly said then-candidate Barack Obama was a Muslim.

Later, Romney was asked by a reporter from CNN why he did not correct the questioner.

"I don't correct all of the questions that get asked of me," Romney said. "I obviously don't agree that he should be tried."

The Obama campaign also took issue with comments by Dave Yost, Ohio's state auditor, who was one of several warm up speakers prior to Romney and mocked the president and first family for vacations they have taken since Obama became president, saying they were "not middle class."

The Obama campaign accused Romney of "standing by silently as his chief surrogate attacked the President’s family," but in all likelihood Romney did not hear those remarks at all, as his campaign aides note, he was talking with local families in a closed-press meeting prior to taking the stage here.

The Romney campaign did not respond to further requests for comment.

So, Romney gets a pass because he did not hear those remarks?...

He certainly did not personally hear the comment that Hilary Rosen made...but was made aware and the media made so much of it.

.....whether he heard the remarks or not, we all know, he will not condemn them with any real conviction.

Fake? Not at all. Romney has once again demonstrated that he has no integrity whatsoever. Is this someone YOU want to trust on the world stage if he can't even stand up against this sort of thing?

1. Anna is not my "opponent". She/He is a fellow American (I assume) that is slightly misguided. That's all. Opponent sounds sooo harsh....lol....Im just here to assist in finding the light (conservative, that is).

2. Whether or not she/he is "successful" or not is irrelevant. Looney liberal is looney liberal no matter how you slice it. Plus, the loney libs never DEFINE rich, wealthy or successful so we never know what it means to you.

The Politics of Projection has become so obvious and ridiculous -- Aside from the willful ignorance of what "treason" means -- please name the high crimes and misdemeanors committed by the president. And please explain how anything the president has done is worse than the meeting called by Frank Luntz on the day of the president's inauguration?

What do you call a premeditated united front to obstruct, attack, and lie? What do you call putting Party first rather than voting one's conscience, voting against one's own legislation, and voting against constituent wishes? Poll after poll shows huge majority support for so many measures that the Teapublicans have voted against lock-step. Representation, where the heck is it?

Thanks to extremist Teabaggers, moderates have left and are leaving the GOP/TP in droves, either out of choice or from being "primaried" from the far-Right. Representatives are not elected to protest. They are elected to govern, which means showing up for work and doing real work for tax dollar pay. Republicans would do well to throw out the Teabaggers and start over again.

Unfortunately there is no leadership. And once again, as this article shows, Romney fails the leadership test yet again.

It was correct for Mr. Romney not to comment on what charges, if any, Mr.Obama and the radicals and extremist within his administration, the Congress, and his financiers, directors and supporters here and abroad should face before proper investigations are completed, but judging from what has already been uncovered from investigations such as the Fast and Furious Operation, and the Solyndra funding scam, they will be extensive.

          #1.30 - Mon May 7, 2012 10:17 PM EDT

@Michael - When you learn to spell, speak without acting like a preteen and can give people voted into office by the People of the country you claim to be a part of.... You might actually get some respect from those that feel differently from you. All you do by acting the way you do is prove why most Republicans won't vote for a president this year. I have many friends that feel if they don't have someone they feel is worth the job...they would rather not vote at all.

@J.D. - It's funny how when Mitt Romney sells off businesses that fail and makes a profit from it...it's okay. But when a company doesn't do well when trying to make a good product and fails....it's not okay? It seems you are just like the senator of my state...if President Obama has anything to do with it...just say "No". There is no treason in the President's actions. The conspiracy theorists would have already had him up on charges or even impeachment charges if anything they said was actually true about President Obama. You, just as Michael has done, have shown that the Republicans need to take back their party from the radical right.

          Deborah S.

Solyndra was turned down for financing by the previous Administration for funding because its business plan was not feasible, then, was immediately approved for funding by the Obama Administration without any further refinement of its plan when they came to power, in other words, they were given a political payoff, costing the American taxpayer billions. The investigation into Fast And Furious needs to be completed, but has been blocked and delayed at every turn by this, "the most transparent administration in history", THOUSANDS of assault weapons funneled to anti government elements in Pro-Western Countries is not needed to track where they are going, that is laughable, especially because there was no system in place to do the tracking, THAT is arming those forces, and We need to know why. Both of those actions,(and they are only the tip of the iceberg),if proven are serious crimes but, You don't know how much better I feel, that people such as Yourself, in the absence of any completed investigations, have thought as deeply as You could, and come to the conclusion that, that, there just couldn't have been any wrong doing, just....... because, and if anyone challenges Your opinion they MUST be radicals! (You weren't involved in the Solyndra approval by any chance were You?).

              http://www.abc15.com/dpp/news/national/comment-about-ann-romney-sparks-uproar

Our President Mr Obama, has been just as silent if not more so.
Mitt Romney when asked directly about the comment or question did make a statement.

It is another example of do as I say not as I do.

President Obama when he first took office went on record chiding companies for trips to Las Vegas, here it is not even three years later and a government agency went on a $700,000.00 spending spree. Maybe I missed his outrage about that?

I also seem to remember a lot of outrage when President Bush used un manned drones to target personal. We seem to be doing a lot more of that, not less.

subnormal -- Hahaha, your post is so typical of rightwing comparisons of things that are not remotely similar. You think decades of health care debate along with that summer of Town Halls before passing ACA -- with a Super Majority above and beyond the requirements of our constitutional democracy -- compares to record filibusters, blocks and holds? Filibusters, blocks and holds purely for political ends regardless of the affect on the American people?

Premeditated, BTW makes an offense much more serious, and the united front makes it a conspiracy. Imagine if Teapublicans spent as much time trying to help the American people as they do plotting and conniving against the president?

Some of it has been going on for a long time, for example since Clinton and blocking appointments so these aren't filled until a Republican administration. And when the Dems are the minority, the don't do the same sh!t. They didn't block all of Dubya's appointments, they didn't abuse the filibuster -- No, it is only one Party that practices such a level of debauchery, and that is the Republican Party!

There are several books out now documenting all this, so no one cares what your personal opinion is.

Its not haters, its just people that dislike ineffective, inefficient government and leader ship. There are as many racist liberals as there are republicans, feisty is proof of that.

                South Park already explained things:

in the sky. Satan comes up quickly, and then stops. This is heaven.

Rocco - and your "leader" has no integrity; no balls; no intelligence; no plans; no programs; no hope. He represents the filth the GOP has become and clearly you're just like him!

When his constituents are lowlifes I guess he just gets to wallow with them.

This little liberal would wipe the floor with you in any contest of intelligence - any day! However, I do make it point not to match wits with someone who's only half prepared - like you! Stick with Romney - more you speed - very slow!

Well, I think Dollars to Donors might qualify.

I know for a fact that the "kinetic military action" in Libya qualifies.

Since nobody is seriously looking into those, Obama is quite safe. He won't get re-elected, but he's safe.

No Joe wants to talk corruption but ignores the Bush Administration actions – here is just one:
In 2002 Halliburton was awarded a 7 billion dollar contract for which only Halliburton was allowed to bid. The very same company headed from 1995 to 2000 by Dick Cheney.
Add it up No Joe, how many BILLIONS has the Obama Administration passed out to his cronies?
BTW - Vice President Dick Cheney's stock options in Halliburton rose from $241,498 in 2004 to over $8 million in 2005, an increase of more than 3,000 percent, as Halliburton continues to rake in billions of dollars from no-bid/no-audit government contracts.

POLITICO: George W. Bush made it cool to be a bundler, giving big-time donors nicknames like "Pioneers" and "Rangers" that carried a certain gravitas in political circles.
Texas oilmen, CEOs, lobbyists and others who could get their friends to kick in checks that added up to $100,000 or more were part of an elite club that came with special access, perks and bragging rights in Washington.

The Bush administration's energy policy and its $31 billion bill that's emerged in Congress seem to be a pretty sweet deal for big business, including at least one in Georgia.
Administration policy was crafted largely in secret by Vice President Dick Cheney and energy industry executives shortly after President Bush assumed office in 2001. The White House refused on several occasions to make public documents that involved the energy policy discussions, leaving many people skeptical about who truly might benefit from the recommendations sent to Republican leaders in Congress. Many of the participants were generous contributors to the Bush-Cheney 2000 election campaign.

For the businesses that invested more money than ever before in George W. Bush's costly campaign for the presidency, the returns have already begun. Many corporations feel like a new day is dawning in Washington. "We have come out of the cave, blinking in the sunlight, saying to one another, My God, now we can actually get something done, "says Richard Hohlt, Washington lobbyist for several other major banks which, like MBNA, are backing an industry coalition whose members provided some $26 million to Republicans during the 1999-2000 campaign cycle.

Ken Lay and Enron arranged for Bush campaign aides and family members to use Enron jets, and even helped to underwrite the 2000 GOP convention, the Republican Florida recount campaign and the inauguration. Enron's generosity was rewarded. Company executives enjoyed at least 40 meetings with White House officials in 2001 and met a total of 72 times with officials from various federal departments and agencies, including the Commerce Department, the Treasury Department, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and the Export-Import Bank, among other agencies. Lay and other Enron officials privately advised Vice President Cheney in 6 closed-door energy policy meetings, exerting influence on an energy policy that read like an Enron wish-list with its commitments to further deregulation of the electricity industry. Much, much more …

What about all the fund raising dinners?

Where was the outrage from President Obama when Zimmerman's address was given out?

This country is arguably split 50-50. To ignore/dismiss in hand the side the social political polemic would be a mistake.

The MSDNC cable news is just a bunch of far left progressives have their heads so far up BO's ass it must make them wet their panties when he(BO) even looks HIS/HER way. We all know Chis gets a hard on and even gets a self proclaimed tickle down his leg whenever he hears his masters voice.

The problem is he is looking for a cure for stupid and can not find it. Senor Bishop Romney will lay his hands of little ole Jack and all will be better, maybe because Senor Bishop Romney could flip flop and then Jack will be screwed.

All the right wing sheeples must turn in their brains in order to follow the republican/ tea party, if one has a brain that means they have not been fully transformed into sheeple.

Now as for fun, come Nov 7th I will be here in all my glory rubbing salt into the wound once the republican party looses big time. Senor Bishop Willard ( I flip flop even on my name) will lose every state.

Lean forward when your on the edge of the precipice and you will in all likelihood fall to the bottom.

My My My what the right will not do in order to support Senor Bishop Willard ( I flip flop on even my name ) Romney. The right wing nuts try to slam President Obama on the pipeline yet they don't mention that Nebraska is a republican controlled state and the people there do not want it.

They fail to mention Romney hiding his money in offshore accounts. Romney does not take a stand on hateful comments directed at anyone. His own Staff member, the President family, Limbaugh stupid remarks. He needs his puppet masters to tell him what to say. But don't worry he will back with you on it.

Romney is a joke and once the campaign get in full swing everyone will watch him make a fool of himself. And since every time he is left to talk on his own, when the debates start he will trip all over himself.

None of you seem to have the ability to see the forest for the trees. 46 unimaginably rich are funding Romney's campaign. Their intent is to buy the country and overthrow the government. They will end our country. It will become a dictatorship and we will become uneducated, frightened and sick so we can be easily controlled. The Armed forces will be used to control us. Ask yourself why else would they want to end public education? Why else would the right would want to abolish health-care for women? Why else would they be against equal pay for women? Why else did they take over state legislators and get these states to pass unnecessary laws to fight nonexistent "voter fraud". They passed laws and then they made up the crime. Why else would the right callously and cruelly want to end all government programs that help the poor---most of whom are children? It comes down to this; if Romney becomes president, we are doomed....we will all be poor. Being middle class will be a distant memory, no longer attainable. The 46 have almost succeeded--don't help them finish the takeover by voting for it. I am 68 years old and in my life sometimes the Democrats are in and sometimes the Republicans were in. I may not have been happy when the Repubs were in, but I was never afraid of them. But I'm scared to death of what's going to happen if the right takes over---there goes my Social Security---there goes my Medicare. The old righties better pay attention--they need to be reminded that those two things come from the government. Be afraid---be very afraid. If Romney gets in and the things I've written come to pass----remember I told you so.

GOP is trying everything is can to have two classes of people, rich and poor. No middle class, no opportunity for middle class to go to school, no opportunity for middle class to make it up the ladder. If you don't have the money then you don't get to go to college. That will be something only the rich can do.

The GOP/bagger narrative: The President doesn't believe in the constitution, he really isn't one of us, he's out to totally socialize America. Oh and he is a secret Muslim! It would be funny if not so sad!
