Obama goes up with $25 million ad buy

President Barack Obama speaks at a campaign rally May 5 at Virginia Commonwealth University.

Gentlemen, start your airwaves.

Senior Obama campaign officials said Monday that a new major television ad buy reflects their broader media strategy: underscoring the need to build on the president’s first term while also responding to all attacks from what they characterize as a Republican monolith of the Romney campaign and its affiliated Super PACs.

The campaign will spend $25 million on swing-state ads this month, top strategist David Axelrod told reporters on a conference call. The ad is a positive one, the first positive ad the campaign has run. Axelrod argued that the sum spent on this ad would be more than Mitt Romney spent on positive ads through the entire GOP primary.

"I believe that by the end of this week -- certainly by the end of next -- we will have spent more money offering people a positive vision for the future, talking about the president's record and the nation's record under his leadership and where we're going than Gov. Romney has in his entire campaign," Axelrod said, "and there's a reason for that."

President Obama and the first lady hit the campaign trail on Saturday in key battleground states. NBC's Brian Moor reports.

The campaign's new 60-second ad, which will air in nine swing states, does not mention Romney but highlights Obama's record on the auto bailout and on national security and job creation.

But in addition to the positive messaging, Axelrod warned, the Obama team will respond to ads aired by outside groups like those funded by the Koch brothers and other "contract killers over there in Super PAC land."

"We will respond vigorously," he said. "We will treat every ad that comes from those entities as an ad from Gov. Romney."

The Obama campaign has already aired three television ads -- each responding to Super PAC commercials by tying the outside groups directly to Romney.

Axelrod and campaign manager Jim Messina also faced questions on the call regarding Vice President Joe Biden's comment yesterday that he is "absolutely comfortable" with gay marriage, a statement widely interpreted to be a more conspicuous embrace of same-sex marriage than Obama has publicly expressed.

As he did yesterday, Axelrod disputed the idea that there is substantial daylight between Biden and the commander-in-chief, saying the veep's comments were "entirely consistent with the president's position which is that couples who are married -- whether they're gay or heterosexual couples -- are entitled to the very same rights and very same liberties."

(He also noted the "clear distinction" between Obama's views and those of Romney, who has advocated for a constitutional amendment to prevent same-sex marriages.)

The two officials were also asked about new poll numbers out Monday that show Romney and Obama in a virtual tie in key battleground states, with Romney leading on key issues like the economy.

Ignoring that dead heat, Messina focused on one angled from one of those polls -- USA Today/Gallup -- that showed a reversal in the enthusiasm gap in 12 swing states. Republicans had held a 14-point advantage in enthusiasm at the end of last year, but Democrats now lead by 11 points. Messina, predictably, tied the drop in enthusiasm to voters learning more about the eventual Republican nominee.

“The more people get an up close view of Gov. Romney the less enthusiastic they get," Messina said. "We'll continue to see that."

Axelrod added that the Romney campaign’s constant primary-season attack ads led to an erosion in excitement about the candidate.

“It turns out that if you spend a year running negative ads grinding down your opponent instead of making a case for yourself, if your vision is basically backward-looking, you diminish enthusiasm," he said.

The Romney campaign responded to the conference call in a written statement from spokesman Amanda Henneberg which read in part, “President Obama just hasn’t lived up to his promises. It's harder to get a job, buy or sell a home, and those fortunate enough to have jobs often have less in their paychecks. Mitt Romney will get our country back on track and stop the middle-class squeeze of the Obama economy.”

While the Obama campaign prides itself on technological prowess, Monday’s conference call was not without some good old fashioned phone issues – several reporters’ lines were muted as they were called upon by the operator to ask a question.

Axelrod joked that it was all a ploy of the opposing party.

“These Republicans will stop at nothing," he contended. "They’ve snipped our lines."

I absolutely LOVE this early offensive. If President had been able to do that in 2008, it wouldn't even have been as close as it was.

By the time we get to August, Romney will be so far down, it will seem like up to him.

I do hope they're using some clips from Newt and Santorum in these ads.

After all, THEY tried to tell Republicans what Romney is, didn't they?

Ought to be PLENTY of material there.

Way to go, Republicans. Way to go. LoLoL

I also keep wondering when the press will ask Romney about his off-shore money. So far he only gives interviews where the questions are soft-ball ones and so far, the only GOPer to mention it has been Newt Gingrich who gets a gold star for saying it.

Rocco, the interest rates have been hovering around that number for at more than 10 years. FYI, he doesn't have his money off-shore for the interest rate, he has it off-shore to avoid paying taxes. You can bet that if President Obama or any democratic politician had their money in the Cayman Islands, Rocco and Friends would be the first to complain.

Romney wants to know if we are better off now than when Bush left office - my personal family is still deep in a recession (my husband is in construction) - but when Bush left office,we were looking down an abyss.

No, we're still not out of the canyon Bush put us in, but we are starting to see some light up ahead and we are hopeful.

Obama has turned us around and has us going in the right direction.I don't want Romney to bring back the Bush economic policies that got us here in the first place and have us sliding back down while his cronies benefit from all our labor.

Along with the off-shore money, I wish the press would ask Romney about his tax returns from years prior to 2010---why haven't they been disclosed? If he doesn't want to disclose the actual returns (although why not--everyone else does), how about a summary or an indication of his effective tax rate, sources of income and charitable giving.

Monday, May 07, 2012 ....

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Monday shows Mitt Romney earning 47% of the vote and President Obama attracting 45% support. Three percent (3%) would vote for a third party candidate, while four percent (4%) are undecided ....

And so early in the race .... "LOL"

The national media is ignoring what is going on within the states that elected Tea Party governors in 2010. Maine's Republican Gov LePage has an approval rating at 38%, while Obama beats Romney 55% to 38% in recent polling here. Maine is known as a purple state, that favors moderate Republicans like Snowe and Collins, but Ron Paul just won all our delegates to the Republican national convention.

To know Romney is to not support him. Moderate Northeast Republicans are not backing Romney.

Hi Dennis...

What percentage of his wealth is "off-shore"? (I honestly have no idea). If it's a small percentage, couldn't this be viewed as diversification. That is certainly something to strive for with an investment portfolio. I know that I have a small percentage of my 401k money in foreign indices.

Have a good one my friend! :-)

So Obama is trying to buy the election with his ads ! Surprise, Surprise, Surprise !

I guess running on his record would not be a good idea. Yes, once again, he is talking about HIS "vision for the future" ..... you know, government control of the health care industry, gasoline at $7.00 a gallon to promote his green agenda, shutting down ALL coal-fired electricity producing plants ..... and a nation full of voters totally dependent on Uncle Sam for their redistribution of wealth, and subsidies (welfare) for all those not able "to afford" health insurance under Obamacare.

If Obama is elected, I wonder how many more trillions in debt is added to the national deficit by the end of his second term. Will we be like Greece, or worse ?

UAW77, I'm not really looking for the Republicans to "DO" anything for me. I just think they give me the best chance to spend my money taking care of my own needs like, retirement, healthcare, job, etc. I know it sounds like a lack of common sense not to just hand over my money to the Obama administration so they can handle those bills for me. I just feel like I can do it better.

I don't think the UAW would work out for me either. I just can't see them being any better at handling retirement and healthcare either. (didnt Obama have to step in and bail out them with my money already?)

Jim-

You should re-read the article. He fully intends, at least on this ad buy, to run on his record. That was sort of the whole point of the article.

As far as 'polling' goes...

only states that matter are VA, OH, MO, IA, NH, AZ, FL, NC.

The rest of it is background noise.

Obama takes IA+NH or any of the others he wins.

He doesn't take it, he loses. That's the entire election in a nutshell.

And Greece...England...France...are all recessionary because they followed the Republican playbook on budgets. They went to Austerity and it failed them. Now the French just elected their Socialists, England will likely follow suit, and Greece just kicked their moderates out of office and split that vote WAY up. Takes 3 parties to make a coalition right now.

You, sir, need to educate yourself a bit more at-length concerning current events. And read more thoroughly.

Why doesn't the media ask questions about Romney's off shore $ and tax breaks resulting from those accounts? It takes an ordinary citizen to ask him as I just saw on TV, and then Romney shrugs his shoulders, walks off and says he'll have to look into that. Incredible! He has no idea about what is happening with his own money. How can he manage the taxpayer's money when he can't even know what is done with his own? The man is an empty suit. He doesn't even know how to answer simple questions, like what he would do to fix the economy.

Romney WILL attack Iran, even while his kids avoid service.

(Has no one listened to his speaches?)

Romney DID dodge the Vietnam draft by getting a Student Deferment, and then a Missionary Deferment. Yes, he cited his religion to not fight.

deathandtaxesmag.com/172731/mitt-romney-loved-vietnam-draft-he-purposefully-avoided/

Romney DID commit voter fraud in the 2010 MA primary race, and MA is considering whether to press charges or not. As you know, a felon may not run for president of the United States.

(That's everywhere right now)

Romney DID get crushed when he ran for Senate. He won Governor in a mid-term election, and then didn't seek re-election because his approval rating was in the 30's.

(And any historical election record can show you this, too)

So, AmeriCAN, your ignorance of your own candidate is making me hope you're not registered to vote.

But alas, I doubt the nation is so lucky.

Yeah. Romney. A real winning horse you picked, there.

Wind at their backs: Powerful Democrats help Chinese energy firm chase stimulus money

Sen. Reid and Obama donors back company seeking $450 million in U.S. money

WASHINGTON — Top Democratic fundraisers and lobbyists with links to the White House are behind a proposed wind farm in Texas that stands to get $450 million in stimulus money, even though a Chinese company would operate the farm and its turbines would be built in China.

The farm’s backers also have close ties with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., who, at the height of his hard-fought re-election bid this fall, helped blunt congressional criticism over stimulus dollars possibly going to create jobs in China by endorsing a proposal by the Chinese company to build a factory in his home state. Although his campaign received thousands of dollars in donations from the wind farm’s backers and Reid stood on stage with them at a campaign event they hosted, his office declined to answer any questions about the wind farm’s organizers or their plans for Nevada.

If it's so bad, then why has Karl Rove committed to spending $250 million to run ads attacking the President. Shouldn't it be obvious?

And that's just one of many PACs, SuperPACs, and other organizations that will be spending hundreds of millions of dollars trying to defeat the President.

What for? Why would savvy business people waste that kind of money on something so glaringly obvious as you suggest it is?

But face it. It doesn't really matter whether it's obvious or not. This is what Citizens United bought. And now everyone is too scared not to spend.

And so Congress has to spend about half of every week bowling for dollars, and the President has to waste a lot of time chasing Mitt Romney away that could be better spent for a LOT of other purposes.

Do you call that either "rational" or "American"? I don't think so.

The next president will be Romney 55 to 43.

Everytime a Republican is asked when they're going to talk to the General Electorate about the Ryan Plan and how badly it hurts the middle class, seniors, and everybody else that's not rich, the FIRST THING Republicans do is start talking down the President.

Now I have to believe THAT is because Republicans don't have a darn thing to say. What, should we expect Republicans to tell the truth or admit just how badly they're planning to do in (that ain't gonna happen), and then what, Republicans continue on with this scam that they're doing it to teach us a lesson for electing a "Half-rican American"?

Romney's "plan" gives the wealthy another $250,000 on the Tax Refund Check, and what do we get?

Since Obama is not capable of running on his record, the least he can do is remind all the auto workers that he bailed out their unions. There is no one that believes GM would not have stayed afloat without the bailout, but there is no way the unions would have gotten such a gift. With the latest poll showing Romney up 48% to Obama's 47%, you can bet the Obama attack ads are already in process.

@TEKNISHAN #1.28,

After reading your post, the word "pompous" followed by a three-letter word quickly comes to mind.

Whenever a libtard is unable to handle the opinion of another, he quickly resorts to the arrogance of comments like "you should educate yourself" and other such bu11$h1T.

If you think that Obama will stay on the high road with this campaign, you are only deluding yourself. In fact, much of his 3 years and 4 months + has been spent in attacking those who fail to rubber-stamp his every whim.

He has failed repeatedly to offer any semblance of a realistic budget proposal and has added to the national debt faster than any President in U.S. history. He has played a game of class warfare, using income taxes as his talking point .... even when it is clear that his tax proposals, if enacted, would be but a drop in the bucket towards the massive financial shortfalls.

But go ahead, convince yourself of your own, SELF-APPOINTED intellectual superiority. Pat yourself on the back and tell everyone how much smarter you are than everyone else.

But please, pass out the BARF BAGS before doing so ! Obama is financially inept.

That's EXACTLY what I can't stand about Republicans, they NEVER listen to the American People, but you can be darn sure the Democrats are listening, AND the Independents!

That's the EXACT same thing Bush did, refuse to listen to ANYONE and when even the experts were against Bush, he still refused to listen and said he had to go with his "gut". Now we see where THAT got us!

That's why we're going to take our vote and turn the Republicans OUT of office.

"You should worry less about what a private citizen does with his or her money and be far more concerned with what your government does with your money.'

Well, TeaPeople like invading other countries/wars, gotta pay for that.

Most other folks like the military, interstate highways, teachers, firefighters, electric grids, medical research, clean food, air and water, etc....all the stuff that equates to a civilized society that has to be paid for.

What exactly has the government been doing with my money?

Bailing out banks? Gee, thanks.
Giving away tax cuts bigger than my income? Really appreciate that.
Subsidizing corporations that raise prices? Yeah, certainly helped my budget.
Deregulated banks? Hey, we all love fees and high interest rates.
Creating easy debt and high inflation? Love those smaller packages.
Tax exemptions for offshoring jobs? Yep, China is our friend.

Am I better off since Obama became President? Hell, I haven't recovered from when Clinton left office.

    @teknishan

Nah, someone who doesn't understand how presidents are elected.

Romney could win the popular vote 55-43...and still lose the election.

Because he will get the hick vote, the scared vote, the whitey-rules vote, and the jesus-loves-me vote.

And the only big state that those votes carry is TX and, possibly, FL. The Hick and jesus-loves-me vote (TX) and the scared/whitey-rules vote (FL).

Who is the party of race baiting and religious persecution? In Teknishan's world it is the Democrats.

That said, it is a statistical improbability for a candidate to lose an electoral college election while defeating her opponent by 12 percentage points in total votes.

Romney will win in Michigan, he will win in Wisconsin, he will win Ohio and Pennsylvania, he will win North Carolina and Florida, and he will win Colorado and Washington. Virginia is a little harder to figure with all the federal pork dollars spent in Northern Virginia. But that to, will go to Romney.

The undecided vote has a strong history of going against the incumbent. Think about it. He has been the president for about 3 and a half years and you are undecided about how good a job he is doing? Let that settle in. History shows the undecided will go to the new blood in a large way.

Let me give you an example:

Take a state like Ohio that has it Romney 45, Obama 44 with 3.1% error of likely voters. That leaves 11% undecided with 1-3 going to Paul, perhaps. Romney will win this state 51-46 with 3 going to Paul.

And as Obama's negativity drones on it will only get worse. Last night on Hannity they were showing the president speaking before a 40% packed house where previously he drew a packed house. His likability factor is sinking.

Several reporters were muted when they were called upon to ask questions. "They've snipped our lines" Lols.....

More likely they avoided the hard questions. As usual.

Personally, I'd like to see if anyone can point out where Romneys and Obamas policies differ in any major way. As far as I can tell, they don't. Obama recently named a bigshot from Bain to his administration. Romney says he would have signed the NDAA.

The number one issue is the economy. One candidate for President is clearly the most respected on this issue. That man has appeared over 17 times on major financial news programs in the last 30 days. He is NOT RObamaney.

When I ask my friends, liberals, democrats, republicans, OWS, Union members, whatever, what it is they really want the next President to do, they say pretty much the same things.

Repair the damage to the economy, and restore it to health. Stop the wars, get out of Afghanistan. Stop taking away our rights. Stop the Wall St. bailouts. Get the money and the corruption out of politics. Do something about Illegal immigration.

See, a lot of people actually support most of the things Ron Paul stands for.

They just aren't aware of it.

Yes lets get back to the Clinton years. After all Clinton was the recipient of a booming economy thanks to twelve years of Republican leadership. All Clinton had to do was not screw it up, but that was too much to expect and he did when he signed NAFTA into law. Then this country began the decades plus of bleeding millions of jobs that have never and will never return. On second thought, lets get back to the way things were before Clinton.

Let's see UAW, maybe we can start with no more bailouts of union pension plans in favor over bondholders and stockholders. Maybe we could then end the $535 million in green giveaways like Solyndra. Maybe then we could cut down GSA to an efficient size, fire the crazy-spending leaders and reduce to a small efficient size. Maybe then, the Republicans could work on collecting back taxes owed by Obama's appointees. Maybe then, we can implement the reversal of Obamacare (if the Supreme Court does not) which is but another government entitlement program the U.S. cannot afford.

Then, there are massive opportunities to consolidate duplicitous government bureaus and agencies with overlapping functions.

Aaahhh ..... the possibilities are endless to trim government waste ! Libbies simply want to tax and spend and redistribute.

Yes, let's cheer on 2.2% GDP growth. That is well below the projected 2.6% growth most were expecting.

Even at 2.6%, why would anyone be happy with that? After coming out of the Carter years the Reagan economy averaged over 7% GDP growth in his fourth year.

All Reagan did in his first years was cut taxes and regulation. Maybe if he would have implemented massive Keynesian stimulus he might have gotten Obama economic numbers.

Clinton was the recipient of a booming economy thanks to twelve years of Republican leadership. All Clinton had to do was not screw it up, but that was too much to expect and he did when he signed NAFTA into law.

Wow, talk about failing history! Bush senior spent the first part of his term trying to fix the deficits he inherited from Reagan and realized he couldn't do it without raising taxes. Given his "no new taxes" pledge he'd run on, his Republican buddies wouldn't work with him on it (so much for that "fiscal responsibility" myth), so he got it done with the help of the Democrat-controlled congress. That (plus H. Ross Perot splitting the conservative vote) cost Bush reelection, but at least he did the right thing. Then came Bill Clinton and the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1993 -- which passed without a single Republican vote, mind you (another blow to that "fiscal responsibility" myth) -- which led directly to the surpluses we experienced at the end of the Clinton's 2nd term. As for NAFTA, that was Republican legislation championed by Bush senior. All Clinton did was add some protections for U.S. workers and some environmental standards to make it more palatable for his Democrat colleagues -- bipartisan "give and take" that today's Republicans treat like The Plague.

I realize facts are anathema to many of today's Republican ideologues, but please do yourself and the rest of us a favor and look 'em up anyway before you spout such nonsense, because I'm sure you don't want to look like a fool, and we all deserve to be better-informed anyway.

Unions only modern day purpose is to fund democratic campaigns so the revolving door with the negotiating table will be open, further taking from the parent company or which in most cases(public unions) involves the tax payer. He continues to offer no substantive answers to the real issues facing America. Hs answer to every question is "whatever Obama did I will do differently".

As to not closing Gitmo? Look no further than the scardy-cats in the House and Senate. Remember, according to these people we are incapable of housing these foreign detainees on American soil because our prisons are soooo weak. <sarcasm off>

Obama couldn't close Gitmo because repubs got all upset when the proposal was to move the Gitmo muslims in with other 300+ muslim terrorists already in the US prison system. Something about suicide attacks in the communities around the prisons, guards families taken hostage by terrorists, etc etc.

Do you want to talk film clips? How about Newt and Santorum describing Romney's defects and how he's not a true republican? What about Backman's flipflop to where she's now a Romney supporter - there's film clips of that too?

How about Obama declaring that the President of the United States had no authority for an attack on another country where our national security interests were not at risk. Then, of course, he unleashed hundreds of Cruise missiles on Libya and spent another billion on a useless war.

The first thing Obama declared was the closing of Gitmo .... OOPS, he found out it had a purpose and George Bush was right.

Then, there is the famous clip of Obama sharply criticizing the Bush administration for raising the debt ceiling ..... while Obama has raised the debt rapidly

Obama has worked on closing Gitmo... OOPS, the Republican failbots on the right have done everything they can to keep him from keeping that campaign promise for no better reason than to try to make him look bad. You could say he overpromised since no one was accounting for right-wing obstructionism, but that's hardly proof of hypocrisy.

As for the debt ceiling, there's a little thing called "context" which applies here that our friendly neighborhood right-wing ideologues always gleefully ignore in their haste to make a point. Obama criticized Bush for raising the debt ceiling because Bush was doing it to fund his wars -- if he hadn't fabricated the Iraq WMD debacle, he wouldn't have NEEDED to get the debt ceiling raised because there wouldn't have been an Iraq war with all of its no-bid contracts to the Halliburtons of the world to pay for -- whereas Obama had to fight congress to raise the debt ceiling to keep the entire *&^%$#@! U.S. economy from collapsing. If you can't see the difference, then I don't know what to tell you other than to turn off FOX "News" and Limbaugh and educate yourself.

I was talking about Obama contradicting Obama and you guys are talking about something else that is not comparable.

Hey, Romney contradicting Romney is EXACTLY comparable. The fact that the other Republican nominees this year also pointed out that Romney's a flip-flopper just lends credence to that perception, which is anything but fabricated.

What exactly is Mitt Willard's prognosis on how 500,000 jobs a month can be created? He under performed here in jobs during his one term stint as governor. He took a nose dive from 43 of states to 47 and yet he is claiming to be a new maharajah of a job creator. Maybe he will repatriate his assets from the islands and the Swiss banks plus bring back all those jobs that Banes shipped to China and India for a start.

Actually facts show that Wall Street gave more to Obama in 2008 than to McCain. Billionaires support and own Obama - see Soros, Buffett, Stryker, Kaiser, Turner, and the Media Moguls. Obama's every action plays to his Environmentalist handlers and most every one hurts the poor and middle class with higher gasoline, energy and food prices. But he tosses them $20 a week in a payroll tax rebate that will hasten the bankruptcy of Social Security and the stupid people kiss his butt. Meanwhile his wife flies off to Spain with her friends and spends $475,000 in tax-payer money to do so and tells us to "eat cake." And again the idiot liberal lemmings worship at their altar when they toss a few crumbs their way.

Romney has an uphill battle trying to prove that the Bush/Repub rape of America's Middle Class won't be repeated. The shock waves from that crash are still being felt even by the repubs on this board dealing in its denial.

            Me?

When Obama wins in November I intend to profit from it. I am buying stock in the Sturm-Ruger company, a manufacturer of firearms. The RWNJ's are going to make that stock's value blow through the roof on Nov 7, 2012. Poor little nut jobs are going to arm themselves up just after Obama wins. They're going to go crazy on this stock just as they did on Jan 21, 2009.

See? You too can profit off of the RWNJ's. Just find a niche like Glen Beck, Palin, Limbaugh, Hannity and Breitbart did and you'll be living on easy street.

            ksw,

That is a 600% markup. To compute divide the selling
price by the cost paid by the retailer ($120 / $20 = 6 or 600%).

Most retailers use a 200% to 300% markup.

            #7.8 - Mon May 7, 2012 3:40 PM EDT

No Dennis I have worked in retail management for the last 20 years. Most retailers do NOT charge a 500-600% markup. I don't know where you shop but I would advise you to look for cheaper options. LOL Here is basic retail math

Markup Dollars = the difference between your retail 120 and cost 20.

Markup % is the Markup Dollars divided by the retail 100/120

              #7.9 - Mon May 7, 2012 3:56 PM EDT

Ding Ding Ding! Correct Dennis..Sorry i was doing the calculations in my head.

              #7.10 - Mon May 7, 2012 4:02 PM EDT

@Dennis Typo most retailers do not charge even an average 200-300% markup. There are some exceptions but again I would shop elsewhere if I were you.

                #7.11 - Mon May 7, 2012 4:04 PM EDT

                What does the 100 represent?

I managed a book store and I am positive our mark up was greater than 200%. If not 200-300% markup you cannot cover your opperating cost.

                • 3 votes
                #7.12 - Mon May 7, 2012 4:05 PM EDT

You still have your retail math wrong. The 100 is the difference between your cost and what you sold it for (i.e. how much you marked up the goods). Were you responsible for purchasing the books ? If so then you would know the difference between what the goods cost and what you sold the for retail.

                  #7.13 - Mon May 7, 2012 4:15 PM EDT

                  ksw,

The mark up percentage M is gross profit P divided by cost C.

                  M = P/ C

                  http://www.calculatorsoup.com/calculators/financial/markup.php

                  So by that formula Profit =$100, Cost=$20 thus 100/20 = 5 or 500%

                    Bill,

"You'll have to pass the bill to see what's in it".

Obamacare raises the 7.5% of AGI floor on medical deuctions to 10% meaning taxpayers with significant out-of-pocket medical expenses get screwed out of their deduction.

Obamacare imposes a 2.9% medicare tax on stock gains.

Obamacare can, depending on your "level of gain" take part of the gain on the sale of your personal residence. Maybe Bill will read the bill and tell us the exact percentage.

Obamacare has a tax on sun tanning booths .... not sure how many African-Americans use these.

Obamacare recues the amount you can put into a cafeteria plan for a medical reimbursement arrangement from $3,000/year to $2,500/ year.

But then again BILL ..... you would actually have to READ the bill to see what's in it.

So, are you a blowhard or just a blowfish ?

You got me, I have not read the entire bill, but, you are only listing cost. Why not list some of the benefits. You cannot tell me that there is absolutely no benefit to anyone if we do something about health care cost.

How about the one thing I do know, people who have kids in college; especially those that might have pre-existing conditons can keep them on thier current policies until they are 26. Do these cost you are taking about cost $300 a month?

What would you do to lower health care cost?

                      #8.5 - Mon May 7, 2012 4:57 PM EDT

                      Bill,

"Benefits" of approximately (at last count) of 5,400 pages of new rules and regulations just to administer the new law are questionable at best. Besides paying for my family, we now get the privilege of helping to pay for all those previously uninsured. You see, the new law mandates EVERYONE must buy health insurance, but "FOR THOSE WHO CANNOT AFFORD" health insurance the government will "subsidize" ..... which is simply another form of government welfare designed to redistribute the cost !

Then, of course, Obamacare gives the government authority to control annual increasing rates of premium increase while, at the same time, blowing the lid off of maximum payouts, and defining new aspects that "must be covered" such as providing contaception and other "protections" it deems necessary.

In short, the government cannot mandate protection, limit increases and thereby drive private insurers out of business ...... if it chooses to do so !

Then, there is the control over doctors and how they are allowed to practice medicine. It is no wonder so many doctors are now taking early retirement or are aleady turning to MDVIP practices as an alternative.

Medicare is close to financial insolvency. Social Security has recently been upgraded to 3 years earlier than expected depletion of funds ! So now, our government will run health care in this country.

I wonder if their meetings will be like that of the GSA ..... in Vegas, where "what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas", or Tahiti ...... or Disneyland or .............. ?

                      Jim,

You are tellilng me that there his NO corruption in republican politics. You are telling me that only Obamas governing has cost us money?

You sound like a smart guy (smarter that me) but I am also not an idiot. You talk as if not a damn thing went wrong under republican leadership. I gotta tell you things have gone wrong under republican leadership. In fact our "Great Depression" and the "Great Recession both started under republican leadership.

By the way, we already pay for a lot of unisured americans right now, who go to emergency rooms for their care. You seem to look at the pennies; do you know how much more it cost to take care of someone that way?

Somebody please make Senor Bishop Willard ( I flip flop even on my name) Romney and his wife that it is NOT their turn. The American people know that the republicans have brought all this pain and suffering on them. The Republicans are done come Nov.

The problem with Republicans is that they think people do not know how to find out the facts. Case in Point. The Keystone Pipeline. A Republican controlled state, Republican Governor, Republican Lt-Governor, and Republican controlled state congress. The people there voted in these republicans so for the most part the state is republican. Yet, they DO NOT WANT the pipeline because of the fear of damage to their water supply. President Obama listen to these republicans and supports their concerns. Yet the republican party wants to blame President Obama for stopping it. If the Republican leaders will not support the desires of their own supporters want makes any of you think that they will support anything that benefits the middle class?

If you vote republican you are voting against your own best interest. How can people be so stupid? But again there is no magic pill that cures stupid.

One of the problems the US is facing is that jobs shipped overseas will never return...and the only way to replace those jobs is through investing in new industries, like green tech....but guess who was directly responsible for the jobs being shipped over seas in the first place? Mr. Romney! How can this piece of work say in one breath, vote for me because I was a job creater, and in another breath tout his time as a venture capitalist who shipped jobs out of the US?

Pat - as someone may have pointed out on another post - Mitt sez he's a job creator....he just doesn't say WHERE the jobs are created....I'm sure if he has created as many jobs as he said he has here in the US we wouldn't have had such a high unemployment rate!

That man who is responsible for jobs going overseas would be Obama. He has a corporate tax that is the highest in the world and any corporation that can leave and does not would be in violation of the fiduciary duty they owe to shareholders. Meanwhile he funnels tax-payer money by the carloads to the Green Corporations that then support his campaign so that he can buy 25 millions dollar ads - when they don't go bankrupt!

Watermoon, there have not been any business tax increases during the Obama administration. Nor any tax increases for that matter.

Yes, through inaction we now have the highest corporate tax rate in the world. Japan lowered their rate and dropped below us at the beginning of April.

Drop the corporate rate to 25% and get rid of loopholes and deductions.

Sure was Jim. It was put there to prevent the type of 100% power monopoly that the GOP enjoyed from 2000-2006. Unfortunately, when you have the SCOTUS pick your president for you the safeguards you mentioned are bypassed. The GOP also had an effective power monopoly from 1994-2000 as well. They controlled all but the Presidency.

The country had O.D.'d on republicanism by 2007/08, and the hangover became evident in the stock market. Even republicans like you lost your friggin' biscuits.

One more term of repubs this close to the last disaster will finish America off.

Obama and Democratic spending have damn near run this country into bankruptcy. The biggest part of Bush deficits came in his last 2 years when the Democrats controlled Congressional spending.

The only 100% power monopoly came during Obama's first two years when Obama knew he had no balance of Republican opposition to offset his lust for power. Even then, the Louisiana purchase of Mary Landrieu, the Cornhusker Kickback to Ben Nelson. and the stupidity of Stupak were all necessary for Obamacare to get squeezed through .... supported by bogus assertions of fiscal viability spoonfed to the GAO.

November, 2010 was a lesson to Libtards everywhere ... but you did not listen.

You know how it works here ..... certain "liberal posters" here can say what they want, whenever they want and however they want, attacking conservative posters with apparent immunity.

I once used the creative terminology of something describing a part of one's anatomy inserted in another part of one's anatomy ..... and was restricted for a day. The same day, a liberal with a direct, crude expression of the same thing was given a pass ! LOL !! At least mine was creative and required some imagination.

paddywacker do you know the difference between personal wealth and election money. How about super pacs here about those, both side on that one are spending big money and how much has Romney already spent on just becoming the #1 boy for the GOP. and don't forget it used to be anybody but Romney not that long ago just on the right. Its his personal wealth that has put him out of touch with the middle class not the campaign funds.

It never was "anybody but Romney" on the conservative side. Romney has always been the one Republican that could unite Independents and the near right. Because he can do that and because his SuperPac can spend even with Obama Bin Lyin's supporters he will very likely send the HNIC back to Chicago jobless this November.

I would much rather have a man in the Whitehouse that has made himself wealthy in business after a long career than a nasty little man who worked as a community organizer and got lucky in politics.

Isn't it fact that Obama is also a multi-millionaire? And how did he earn that money? Began as a community organizer, then Illinois legislator, then two years ion US Senate and after three years in the White House he has arrived. He produced nothing but somehow managed to squirrel away several million more than those salaries ever added up to. And while we fly coach is wife uses Air Force One to take her friends to Spain at a tax-payer cost of $476,000. These people are not like any common man I kniow.

Try using water Tis. It helps when doing the job interview. Once making a salary of one's own there won't be a need to vote Democrat. One can stand on his own two feet.

How jealous are we, you should be flying on Air Force One since you are the President. And no president or first lady have ever flown on Air Force One right. Really you need to get you head out of your azz and get some fresh air. As for his income I believe he has submitted many more years of tax returns then old mitty. How come, one is left to wonder were his money came from.

President Obama is on the right track. He now knows that you cannot negotiate with a group of conservatives without consciences, who will do ANYTHING to bring us back on the Bush Administration path that led to a recession but greater wealth for the wealthy. The GOP is a group of selfish people who use fear tactics to win their case. They did it with the second election of Bush and they are going to try to do with the 2012 Presidential election. Problem is that the public is not uninformed and now knows that the GOP wants to push an extreme libertarian agenda so that we cannot move forward. Those that elected the GOP/Tea Party members to Congress have had a chance to see the damage that this party has done to this country and have a chance to change the course.

Actually it was the policies begun by Carter that led to this recession that Obama just can't seem to fix or do anything but worsen. And yes, we don't want to return to that or remain in the present mess created by the incompetent.

Clinton exacerbated the problem that Carter began. He forced the major banks to copy what Carter's Fannie Mae was doing and give the poor loans they couldn't afford or he would make it impossible for them to open a branch. And yes the GOP did not fix the oncoming train wreck. Can you imagine the screams if they had stopped mortgages to the poor? The same this is occurring today. everyone knows that this deficit spending is going to destroy the country but neither party has the guts to call for the austerity needed to stop it. And after seeing what happened in France and Greece when someone did have such courage, who can blame them?

The point is so simple that EVEN YOU ...might be able to understand. During Obama's first term, our national debt has risen faster than any other U.S. President, even those who were in office for 8 years.

During this time, Obama has failed to produce any semblance of a meaningful budget proposal. One of his proposals was voted down 97 to 0 in the Senate ... not even garnering 1 single vote from a Democratic Senator. Obama's most recent "offering" is being hatched by Harry Reid ( he's sitting on it) and Reid will not bring it up for a vote ! That is NOT leadership, that is fiscal insanity !!

Jim again how has President Obama done this 1 without a budget which has always contained cuts as well as tax increases to balance the budget. 2 he does not control the house or senate on passing the submitted budget which they do control and have not done so. WHY! might you ask. Because the Republicans have sworn a pact with Norquist no tax increases right? So in you home if you have cut everything you can what is left to do to pay your debts, maybe you get a higher paying job to increase your income right. You really need an education on politics and how it works so you can understand what is happening. Right now you have no clue except talking points, someone elses.

The president proposes the budget. Congress accepts or amends it and then sends it back to the president for his final approval. Or that is the way it has always been before Reid took over and completely abrogated his duty these past three and a half years.

I read the constitution and know about separation of powers. The various departments that get the funding are all part of the executive branch and hat is why it is the president who proposes the budget, not Congress. Congress accepts or amends only!

Correct and he has submitted budgets each year, right? So why do you say he has not done his job. Also as you state the Congress has not accepted or amended his budgets have they, so again why are you blaming the president. Which branch of Government holds the purse strings? Right now in the House and senate they are debating the Military budget, not the President, he has submitted his and they are spending more than he submitted. So again how do you blame the President.

Nothing says Presidential failure like diverting away from the real issues facing our nation which is the Economy, Massive dept, uncontrolled deficit and Federal spending, etc. which effects everyone in the country and focusing on the real important issues that effect less than 3% of the population, i.e. Gay Marriage.

NOW I know why Republicans do that!

You can't ask Republicans 1 single question without them going into their "talking points" and hate speech!

Obama said: "We will treat every ad that comes from those entities as an ad from Gov. Romney.

I didn't notice where Obama said that any negative ad coming from super-pacs that support him would be considered as an ad coming from himself and that he would act to stop it. I guess he holds Romney to a higher standard than himself. Is it because he is a hypocrite or that he truly recognizes Romney to be a much better human being than himself - like most if America does,

I would much rather have a man in the Whitehouse that has made himself wealthy in business after a long career than a nasty little man who worked as a community organizer and got lucky in politics

So would I bfitz. That's why I'm voting for a self-made man: Barack Hussein Obama.

All Romney ever did was emerge from the right womb. He is a full-fledged member of the fortunate sperm club. While we're on the subject of that it is difficult to believe that ol' Mitt was the first sperm to get there.

                                    Thanks for bring that up.

He actually made his millions working with failing corporations - shutting down the totally y inept and streamlining the others to make them efficient and productive. Sounds like the perfect resume needed to deal with the bloated corrupt federal bureaucracy that Obama has expanded so greatly these past three years.

WASHINGTON — Mitt Romney has emerged unscathed from a nasty GOP primary fight and already has President Obama locked in tight race, a national poll revealed yesterday.

Romney not only took a 48 percent to 47 percent lead over Obama among all voters, but also scored a 10-point advantage among independent voters, who are a key group that often decides elections.

The presumptive Republican presidential nominee beat Obama among independents, 48 percent to 38 percent, in the national Battleground Poll conducted for Politico and George Washington University.
