Bachmann hopes to unify party with Romney endorsement

Jim Young / Reuters

Sources close to the Romney campaign said Congresswoman Michele Bachmann is expected to endorse the Republican presidential hopeful at a campaign event on Thursday sources close to the campaign say.

Orlando, Fla. and Pentagon City, Va. – Michele Bachmann will endorse Mitt Romney during a campaign event Thursday in Portsmouth, Virginia, sources within the Romney campaign told NBC News.

The news comes at the tail end of a string of endorsements secured by Romney in recent weeks, following the departure of his chief rival in the race, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum.

Party leaders, including House Speaker John Boehner, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, and Texas Gov. Rick Perry – a former fellow candidate – all soon fell in line.

But Bachmann’s endorsement may represent another kind of victory for Romney, who has tried for months to woo support from the same Tea Party Republicans who found a hero in Bachmann last summer, propelling her own brief run for President.

In Bachmann, he has one of their leaders in his corner.

Bachmann’s former campaign manager, Keith Nahigian, insists the endorsement is outside the realm of politics, pointing to a friendship that developed between the two candidates last fall.

“She really liked Romney during all the debates.  Really liked him behind the stage, behind the scenes,” Nahigian said. “He was so polite to her every time they saw each other.”

Nahigian was reached by telephone tonight as he left a fundraiser for Romney at the Ritz-Carlton hotel in Pentagon City.

“Ever since she got out of the race, he’s called her,” Nahigian said.

For Bachmann, the endorsement represents the end of a journey from fiery presidential candidate slinging arrows at the establishment to self-described unifier.

“I want my voice to be one of uniting our party, the independents, the mainstream, the conservatives, evangelicals, the Tea Party movement,” she said during a recent appearance on NBC’s ‘Meet the Press.’"

“I’m waiting,” Bachmann said, “for our party to come together and help in that process.”

That moment seems to have arrived.

The mission to unify her party was not always evident during Bachmann’s run, when she made headlines for asserting Romney and another high-soaring candidate at the time, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, were each complicit in laying the groundwork for President Barack Obama’s national health care plan.

Bachmann created a single moniker for the candidates – “Newt Romney” – and during a bus tour in late December warned crowds that neither candidate could mount an attack on the issue.

“It's not going to happen with Mitt Romney,” Bachmann told a crowd inside a diner in Onawa, Iowa, on Dec. 27th

“He put that system into effect in Massachusetts,” she continued, referencing the health care plan he launched as Governor in 2006.

Bachmann dropped out of the race on Jan. 4, a day after finishing last among the candidates competing in the Iowa caucuses.

Being nice, although a positive trait, is a ridiculous reason to endorse someone. That's what got us into our country's mess in the first place. Too many people vote for candidates that appeal to them for a host of whimsical reasons. Voters need to ignore a candidates charm and charisma and focus on the candidates platform. What does Romney stand for that would be appealing to conservatives? It certainly isn't the privatizaton of healthcare. Romney led the socialist change in his own state which ultimately ended up a big failure!

I also forgot to add Romney flip flops on his position about English being the official language of the United States. (see below excerpt from the 3/16/12 Huffington Post article). Just what we need--another candidate who says one thing, then whitewashes it when it doesn't serve his purpose.

"The Mitt Romney of 2008 believed that English should be the official language of the United States. But when the Mitt Romney of 2012 traveled to Puerto Rico in search of delegates, he left that position back on the main land.

When Romney touched down in the potential 51st state Thursday, ABC reported that the former Mass. governor repeatedly said he would put no pre-conditions on Puerto Rican statehood. That included removing Spanish as one of the commonwealth's official languages."

Worst sort of miscreant on earth are the religious right wingers that claim to be saved yet are so quick to judge and hate. One day you will find suitable employment working for one of us libs. You complain so much because it makes you feel less responsible for your failures to be able to blame Obama.

Obama does not bang your wife nor should he raise your kids. He is the POTUS and not your father or wifes BBC on the side. Grow up and be the fireman you said you where going to be or at least stop whing so much about how Obama failed you. I thought being a conservative was about living well without the fed in your life or business.

        Fifty year old manure spreader - $1 ( Washington , D.C. )

        Date: 2012-02-14, 10:21AM EST

Fifty-year old manure spreader. Not sure of brand. Said to have been produced in Kenya . Used for a few years in Indonesia before being smuggled into the US via Hawaii . Of questionable pedigree. Does not appear to have ever been worked very hard. Apparently it was pampered by various owners over the years. It doesn't work very often, but when it does it can really spread the manure and sling it for amazing distances.

I am hoping to retire this manure spreader next November, but I really don't want it hanging around getting in the way. I would prefer a foreign buyer that is willing to relocate this manure spreader out of the country.

I would be willing to trade this manure spreader for a nicely framed copy of the United States Constitution.

        Location: Washington , DC

NazalBlow. The only manure spreader is Lyin Willardo, the Mexican Mormon Moron tax evader, bankrupter and Etch A Sketch Champion.

He is also the only candidate that was not born here. His daddy named him, appropriately after Willard The Rat, then gave him a second name "Mitt" after a baseball glove. When he was smuggled over here from his birthplace in Tijuana, his father changed the family name to Romney from Romero.

We still need to see the long form of this lying criminal's birth certificate. Maybe his new buddy Fox Top Trump will, ask him for it.

What you need, NazalBlow is free personal vaginal ultrasound from the Pope's boy Rick the Dick Sanitarium to find out what happened to your missing brain.

The national media continues to propagandize our political process for their own benefit!

How else can they bilk the public out of billions of dollars?

The underdog must be made to seem viable to push an already decided election for monetary gain.

The American voter must be sold the idea that our vote really does matter.

People better wake up and quit worrying about the Presidential Election and focus on Congress.

Congress has our country in the mess it is in, and there is very little a President can do to change the status quo.

Follow the money, and you will find the corruption that will make you puke.

Follow the media, and you will find who is manipulating the minds of the masses.

If your worried about the Presidential Election, then you are falling prey to the MACHINE.

Bachmann's support could bring over the Tea Party conservatives many of whom are reluctant to support Romney. This could help to solidify and unite a somewhat divided Republican base to run in what will be a close Presidential election against Obama.

More like Obomney. Looks like we will yet again fail at removing the traitorous element from the white house. What has it been, like 23 years? Shame on America.

I thought that being a traitor meant doing things to aid the enemy or hurt your own country. Meanwhile a lot of the 1% (Romney & his friends) are hiding their money overseas. This steals from the US by not paying the proper amount of taxes. After all they use this country to provide them will any and all services they can get away with. Then the country the money is in allows that country to have more money for whatever they want to do with it, businesses, factories, buying companies. This American money provides jobs for foreigners, allows them the ability to loan US money and gain interest on it. If the money was kept in the US I seriously doubt that the economy would have tanked the way it did. These are the same people who was the deregulate big business and let them run this country.

We are trying to keep the traitors out of the White House. Seems Romney didn't want to go to war, a lot of young men didn't, but those without the wealth to flee Had to go. Those rich ones got to go to France.

A former candidate endorsing the nominee is nothing new. It is the way party politics works. Obama's competition not only endorsed him, but became part of his team - Biden, Clinton, etc. Bachmann endorsing Romney is no surprise; and you can look for the rest to do the same thing to try and help him win. It is what they do and have always done. This even happens on lower levels in state elections.

On another note, I am one of probably many who open up the collapsed comments and read what they said. What gets me is that some comments that are not collapsed are no different than those which are collapsed. Since they can still be opened and read, why collapse them at all? After all, it is only an opinion and this is a forum/debate where all sides and thoughts should be allowed to be expressed. Am I not right?

As far as my opinion goes, I don't think anyone running now, including the current president, are up to the task of getting this country straight. Somewhere out there is the best person for the job, but he or she will not run or can't.

It is really a shame that the evangelical king, 50 year bible scholar Harold Camping who bilked about 500,000 of these braindead Children of the Corn nuts out of their "worldy possessions" that he was going to take them to see and stay with the man in the sky on Rature Day last year. Too bad we did not get of these people, but unfortunately, Camping's calculations were based on "biblical facts" which he now realizes are just pulp fiction

The repukes learned from this and made Jesus worshipping the basis of their party to get these sheep to vote for them. What they don't realize is once lyin Willardo gets the nomination, these idiots will not get what he has promised them.

It all comes down to what the other two criminal repukes think about lyin Willardo, the Mexican Mormon Moron tax evader, bankrupter and Etch A Sketch champion.

What is so funny is that these stupid, pathetic right wing cracked teanuts, like Jo, really think that lyin Willardo the Mexican Mormon Moron tax evader, bankrupter and Etch A Sketch champion has a clue on how to provide jobs. Government is not getting less arrogant, but MORE arrogant across this nation. And I fear it can only end in something disastrous. The People will not put up with tyranny forever. There is a point beyond which people figure they have nothing left to lose and they take action to restore their fundamental liberties. This is the lesson of history, repeated over and over again, nation by nation, throughout recorded human history.
