ARLINGTON, VA -- Newt Gingrich finally ended his presidential bid on Wednesday at a hotel just outside of the nation's capital, where he once led the Republican Party in Congress.
Newt Gingrich end his run for president on after winning only two of the dozens of nominating contests in the Republican primary race. Watch his entire speech.
After a week of broadcasting his intent to suspend his campaign -- including the release of a video earlier this week thanking supporters and previewing the announcement -- Gingrich formally ended his bid for the Republican presidential nomination at an event his campaign had billed as a "press conference to announce suspension of campaign."

"Today, I'm suspending the campaign but suspending the campaign does not mean suspending citizenship. Callista and I are committed to be active citizens. We owe it to America. We owe it to Maggie and Robert," Gingrich said, referring to his only two grandchildren, here in his home state of Virginia.
Once bitter rival of Mitt Romney, the presumptive GOP nominee, Gingrich vowed during his 26 minute speech to do whatever possible to beat Barack Obama but came short of actually endorsing Romney.
"I'm asked sometimes is Mitt Romney conservative enough. And my answer is simple: compared to Barack Obama? You know, this is not a choice between Mitt Romney and Ronald Reagan. This is a choice between Mitt Romney and the most radical leftist President in American history," Gingrich said while addressing roughly 100 members of the media inside the Hilton Hotel.
Romney said in a statement: "Newt Gingrich has brought creativity and intellectual vitality to American political life. During the course of this campaign, Newt demonstrated both eloquence and fearlessness in advancing conservative ideas. Although he long ago created an enduring place for himself in American history, I am confident that he will continue to make important contributions to our party and to the life of the nation."
Gingrich’s spokesman said an official endorsement of Romney is still to come.
The news was far from surprising, given the way the former House speaker had been openly discussing the prospect of his exiting from the race ever since he finished poorly in the Delaware primary.
After finishing nearly 30 percent behind Mitt Romney in DE -- a state Gingrich frequented leading up to the election -- the speaker basically gave two concession speeches while campaigning in North Carolina last week. He began calling Romney the "nominee" and said it was time to "be honest about what's happening in the real world as opposed to what you would like to have happen."
Gingrich's campaign had been considered virtually dead for weeks, though the winner of the South Carolina and Georgia primaries vowed to contest the nomination all the way through the Republican convention this summer in Tampa. Gingrich had assailed Romney's conservatism, and, to boot, President Obama's campaign circulated a video this morning featuring the ex-speaker's greatest hits against Romney.
That said, the month of May is far later in the election cycle than most political observers thought Gingrich would last. After suffering missteps in the launch of his campaign, most of Gingrich's senior staff quit on him last June.
Gingrich must also still work to erase millions of debts incurred during his campaign, mostly during its tail end.
But at today’s event, the Speaker seemed cheerful and unfazed by the $4 million hole he is in. He rather spent time talking about one of his most memorable ideas from the past 10 months – his proposed moon colony.
“My wife has pointed out to me approximately 219 times, give or take three, that the moon colony was probably not my most clever comment in this campaign. I thought, frankly, in my role providing material for Saturday night live it was helpful but the underlying key point is real,” Gingrich joked.

Obama is hardly radical or leftist as Newt claims. Social Security and Medicare, food stamps and Medicaid are now "radical." The same Health Care Law signed at the state level by Willard Mitt Romney is "radical," which is roughly the same law the republicans put up against Hillary's plan which is now "radical."

Jeez, how many times are they going to run this 3 week old story? How about a story on how Ron Paul has won Iowa, Washington, Louisiana and Minnesota and the fact that it looks more every day like Romney may not have the 1144 delegates he needs for the nomination that he already accepted and the GOP already handed to him publicly? You know, REAL, CURRENT news.
But Ron Paul didn't win the popular vote in any of those states. Didn't he come in 4th in Louisiana? He's got this weird strategy of seeding state conventions with his loud mouthed delegates and subverting the popular vote, and then claiming victory after his back room shenanigans. Does he have a problem with one person, one vote?

Oh, and Newt's moon colony plan was one of the few good ideas he had. Very bad timing, considering how the economy is right now, but at least it isn't something that's able to screw people over no matter the time and place.
This has been a funny campaign. For more than a year conservatives have been telling us that liberals are afraid of _____________— (fill in the black.) We were afraid of Palin, then Pawlenty, then Trump, then Perry, then Bachmann, then Pizza Man then Newt, then Santorum. Yet all of them are GONE. So now, after the Republican has angered every demographic in the nation other than old, white haired white guys -- their nominee is someone even old, white haired white guys don't like.

McCain or Clinton might have gone after him, can't say for sure. Bush didn't go after him twice when he had the chance. And Romney stated on more than one occasion that going after OBL was a waste of money and resources.
What you and your FauxNews-informed companions don't grasp is that what really took balls for Obama was the fact that, if the operation had gone south, or if OBL had turned out not to be in that compound, the international fallout would have been a complete disaster for Obama. It would have guaranteed him to be a one-term president. But he made the order anyway.
And as for all the blather on FauxNews about Obama taking all the credit and not thanking the miliitary personnel who actually carried out the mission, he thanked them very sincerely and repeatedly for several months.

Now that is a story that is not getting much coverage.
Paul supporters have taken over the inside game in many state conventions. Once they get their people on some of the National committees for the GOP convention, watch out.
Even Romney and his millions will not be able to even control the convention. Sounds like Paul will have enough votes to get his name placed in nomination. This is one GOP convention I will definitely watch.
Ron Paul may not get enough delegates to win the nomination, however, he may get enough to prevent Mitt Romney from striding in with enough delegates to win on the first ballot. THAT would be worth watching.

You might be right about the delegates, but the news is not focused on RP. He will gain more delegates along the primary, but everyone knows Romney is the GOP nominee. You can put RP in as a write in.

It's about time, He should have done it long ago when there was no way he was going to win his party's nomination. Talking about an ego,and as far as him trying to erase his debt, as the story states, shouldn't he try paying his debts or is this an instance where the public will be hit with it. A lot of us wish we could just erase our debt, instead of paying. Oh I have an idea why doesn't he try pawning some of the jewelery he purchased for his wife.
I guess he and Callista just are going to have to write about 150 new books a year to pay off his debt. With Barnes & Noble going under, they'll really have to find some out of the way places to have their book signings. Looks like they might have to jack up the price for autographs too. Bucsdad....my guess is that is exactly what you have....half a brain. Just what exactly has Mr. Obama done that would not have been made worse by the policies of the radical right? While he has not done a spectacular job, I believe that he has done about as well as could be expected. I would like to see him given more time and a lot more cooperation from the political side and from the rest of America.
