Gingrich finally suspends bid for the presidency

ARLINGTON, VA -- Newt Gingrich finally ended his presidential bid on Wednesday at a hotel just outside of the nation's capital, where he once led the Republican Party in Congress.

Newt Gingrich end his run for president on after winning only two of the dozens of nominating contests in the Republican primary race. Watch his entire speech.

After a week of broadcasting his intent to suspend his campaign -- including the release of a video earlier this week thanking supporters and previewing the announcement -- Gingrich formally ended his bid for the Republican presidential nomination at an event his campaign had billed as a "press conference to announce suspension of campaign."

Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich speaks next to his wife Callista Gingrich as he suspends his presidential campaign May 2 in Arlington, Va.

"Today, I'm suspending the campaign but suspending the campaign does not mean suspending citizenship. Callista and I are committed to be active citizens. We owe it to America. We owe it to Maggie and Robert," Gingrich said, referring to his only two grandchildren, here in his home state of Virginia.

Once bitter rival of Mitt Romney, the presumptive GOP nominee, Gingrich vowed during his 26 minute speech to do whatever possible to beat Barack Obama but came short of actually endorsing Romney.

"I'm asked sometimes is Mitt Romney conservative enough. And my answer is simple: compared to Barack Obama? You know, this is not a choice between Mitt Romney and Ronald Reagan. This is a choice between Mitt Romney and the most radical leftist President in American history," Gingrich said while addressing roughly 100 members of the media inside the Hilton Hotel.

Romney said in a statement: "Newt Gingrich has brought creativity and intellectual vitality to American political life.  During the course of this campaign, Newt demonstrated both eloquence and fearlessness in advancing conservative ideas. Although he long ago created an enduring place for himself in American history, I am confident that he will continue to make important contributions to our party and to the life of the nation."

Gingrich’s spokesman said an official endorsement of Romney is still to come.

The news was far from surprising, given the way the former House speaker had been openly discussing the prospect of his exiting from the race ever since he finished poorly in the Delaware primary.

After finishing nearly 30 percent behind Mitt Romney in DE -- a state Gingrich frequented leading up to the election -- the speaker basically  gave two concession speeches while campaigning in North Carolina last week. He began calling Romney the "nominee" and said it was time to "be honest about what's happening in the real world as opposed to what you would like to have happen."

Gingrich's campaign had been considered virtually dead for weeks, though the winner of the South Carolina and Georgia primaries vowed to contest the nomination all the way through the Republican convention this summer in Tampa. Gingrich had assailed Romney's conservatism, and, to boot, President Obama's campaign circulated a video this morning featuring the ex-speaker's greatest hits against Romney.

That said, the month of May is far later in the election cycle than most political observers thought Gingrich would last. After suffering missteps in the launch of his campaign, most of Gingrich's senior staff quit on him last June.

Gingrich must also still work to erase millions of debts incurred during his campaign, mostly during its tail end.

But at today’s event, the Speaker seemed cheerful and unfazed by the $4 million hole he is in. He rather spent time talking about one of his most memorable ideas from the past 10 months – his proposed moon colony.

“My wife has pointed out to me approximately 219 times, give or take three, that the moon colony was probably not my most clever comment in this campaign. I thought, frankly, in my role providing material for Saturday night live it was helpful but the underlying key point is real,” Gingrich joked.

Breaking news: Gingrich privately reveals he is really suspending his campaign to spend more time with his family... meaning finding that fourth-is-a-charm wife. But we'll always have fond memories of him and Callista, including the couple times he pops up in this funny YouTube video called "3 Things I've Learned from Mitt Romney,"

Newtie Tootie isn't walking away. He's waddling away, with his fat butt.

This arrogant, loudmouth, racist, blowhard is so full of himself, even he should realize he was playing his ignorant fans for FOOL$!

I'm sure he's banked/hidden some campaign money by "suspending" his lousy joke of a campaign, thereby, still being able to accept donation$. Glad he finally got off the taxpayer-funded $ecret $ervice welfare program. Good riddance, Newtie Tootie!

BTW: Obama/Biden win in 2012! No doubt!!

Bout time Gingrich dropped out....he stayed in too long and ran up bills...now he wants Romney to pay them off....guess he wants to take his wife shopping at Tiffany's...or, go on a cruise.....or use that half million dollar credit line....As far as wanting someone to preserve his reputation...he is the one that fillandered, etc.....

Here is an example of his party.

The wealthy refuses to give benefits to full time workers so the Government passes a bill saying over 40 hours gets health and other benefits.

Result, businesses won't allow over 39 hours of work.

The Democrats passes a Minimum wage in order to give people a minimum standard of living while Republicans want to get rid of Minimum wage. That way they can pay you less or as little as they feel. In desperate times people will take it and work 3 or 4 jobs if need be just to feed the kids.

        Point by example.

        Disney in the 1980's was a $29.00 ticket. Today's is $85.

While we say this is 30 years later look at what has happened.

The CEO makes over 29 Million a year while those who actually do the work will never see more than 39 hours or benefits.

Can you REALLY say that this CEO CAN'T live off of 2 million and the other 27 million go towards health insurance and benefits for employee's?

Simple in theory but THAT is exactly what goes on in America today while people hardly make a living essentially being slaves for the 1% at the top. There is absolutely no compassion or care about you from the top.

It's I got mine now you get yours. Most of these people come into this kind of money from inheritance or the who you know and who you blow boys club.

Today also with education. Instead of allowing students to pay off debt or keep their grants when Congress ups their aid, Universities give that money to benefits for Tenure or add buildings.

I went to Hillsborough CC and recently took a computer course which the books and lesson plan included Network Cards that have been out of date since the early 90's. Yet the course cost an arm and a leg. Funny how they have 6 new buildings recently built.

AT that same tone, who the heck is going to hire someone from HCC to work at a fortune 500 company. Those who work at the wealth building companies come out of Harvard, Oxford, Yale, Cornell. How many of you can afford to go there?

Truth be that your screwed and the Democrats including Obama try to give you a fair shot while the Republicans still try to run things as if we no longer live in a global community where we ALL work together.

The days of Kings and Queens are over as well as an elitist attitude because there are 7 BILLION people now and that's a heck of a lot more of us than there are of you.

Bobble and Beads in this information age no longer works to pacify us and just because a few of those idiots say "look at the shiny keys" doesn't mean you will win this next Presidency.

You Republicans no longer have any connection to reality anymore.

Newt was not presidential material. He died by his own hand. His display of weakness on illegal immigration sealed his fate before the moon colony fiasco. He did not learn from Rick Perry's fall for giving taxpayer money to illegals in Texas. Approximately 2 wks prior to the christmas holidays newt stated he would show compassion for those illegal immigrants who successfully remained in the USA for an extensive period of time. Two weeks after the holidays his poll numbers tanked and it was all over.

I am sure Obama is glad that he does not have to debate Newt. Newt's ability to debate many issues, especially international, would likley have embarassed Obama at some point. That would have been the only worry though.

I am glad to see him go, now, if he would only stay away from the Republican political arena it would be even better and appropriate. I trust that he gets the message that he, his opinions and his warped amoral mentality is not wanted or condoned by a majority of the Republican American people. The facts point this out and there is no amount of self serving, fact twisting, event warping delusional interpretation that he can do to change the plain and simple truth ... NEWT IS A LOSER!

                                Reasons why Newt is done?

Obama - "the most radical leftist President in American history,"

No one can tell whether Newt is flat out lying, or whether he is just delusional. And that is the point. He cannot be believed and he cannot be trusted. Newt does not even believe what he himself says. Santorum was bat s*#t crazy, but he actually believes the nonsense he was spouting.

Newt never had what it takes to be a bona fide Presidential candidate.

Nuke [sic] was never really in the race. Nothing Washington politicians say is true and the rest of what they spew are false misrepresentations.

All members of both major parties together couldn't make one leader between them. Yeah, they are THAT bad.
