Pro-Romney Super PAC tries to fix Romney's image problem

Restore Our Future is out with the ad for its more than $4 million buy. (The buy is up to $4.3 million in nine states.)

Notably, the ad that's being run is, "Saved," the same positive Mitt Romney ad that the Romney CAMPAIGN ran in 2007 and Restore Our Future ran during this past primary season. That raised questions in February of just how close to the line campaigns and the Super PACs that support them come.

Here's what we wrote, in part, Feb. 23 about Restore recycling this ad:

"The pro-Romney Super PAC Restore Our Future is going up with an ad in Michigan and Arizona, starting tonight, that focuses on the story of Mitt Romney helping to lead the search for his business partner's daughter who went missing in New York City in the 1990s. The story is true, but the ad is recycled. In fact, the ad run by a SUPER PAC, called 'Saved,' is word-for-word the same ad that the Romney CAMPAIGN ran in 2007, called 'The Search.'"

The Super PAC is run by people close to Romney, who were key 2007-2008 campaign staffers. Running this ad is an acknowledgment of the image problems Romney has. He has been upside down in his likability ratings (33 fav/36 unfav) in polls for months, though, they have improved slightly since the GOP primary ended.

Here's Restore's press release on this ad buy:

Restore Our Future Launches $4.3 Million Ad Campaign

Group targets Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Michigan, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, and Virginia

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Restore Our Future today launched a $4.3 million TV ad campaign that targets nine states:  Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Michigan, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, and Virginia.  The group is currently running the ad "Saved," which touts Gov. Romney's tremendous efforts to find his former business partner's 14-year-old daughter after she went missing in New York City.

"Barack Obama had his chance to lead and failed.  Now, it is time to exchange empty rhetoric with a proven record," said Charlie Spies, Treasurer of Restore Our Future.  "The choice this November is clear:  Mitt Romney, an experienced leader and job creator who fixed an economy without raising taxes, or Barack Obama, a politician whose way forward hinges on bolstering the government's power - and budget - at the expense of private-sector jobs."

The $4.3 million TV buy begins on May 3 and will run through May 16.  To view the video, please click here.

Ad Buy by State:
·    Colorado:  $293,000
·    Florida:  $857,000
·    Iowa:  $490,000
·    Michigan:  $465,000
·    Nevada:  $278,000
·    New Hampshire:  $231,000

How can he fix his image, the man's a robot.

Maybe BO the dog can stand in for him at his next campaign event.

BO has a little more appeal among woman, seniors, the young and I seen the other day that even cats like him.

Just need to make him think he's riding on the inside of the car though.

Moot point.

PA isn't really a swing state (though the media will bill it to raise raitings), nor is Nevada. Both poll almost double-digits in favor of Obama.

Obama needs 8 votes out of...

NH, AZ, IA, OH, VA, NC, SC, FL, MO (the most recent 'swing states' list)

NH + IA (both vote democrat 90% of the time, and only voted republican to back Bush 43 incumbency bid) OR any single one of the above.

So Obama could lose FL AND OH...and still win by taking NH + IA, or any of the others.

Everytime I look at that guy I think about all the American Jobs he's shipped overseas, all the pension and retirmenet money he took from American Workers and kept for himself and his corporate partners, all the businesses he closed down, and how he avoids paying taxes by keeping his millions "off shore."

Rather than run for president, Romney ought to renounce his citizenship to the United States because he a lousy citizen.

BREAKING NEWS: MSNBC, CNN, ABC, CBS, and NBC try to fix Obama's image problem!!!!! Only problem is that unemployment is still over 8%, true unemployment still over 10%, and federal debt increased by more than $5T in three years of his administration which is more than eight years of Bush! Obama's campaign theme: IT'S NOT THE ECONOMY, STUPID.

Bill, maybe you should ask your Republican Congressmen and women to do something to help the economy, instead of sending Republicans to Washington for the specific purpose of causing "gridlock" to avoid growth in the economy.

Republicans encourage unemployment, and do everything in their power to make sure Americans who are unemployed, stay that way.

Now Republicans want to send "ROMNEY, THE JOBS CREMATOR" to Washington to cause even MORE damage to American Workers!

No thanks Republicans, you've done enough damage already!

Bill-2910238 -- If there hadn't been all the government cut backs, and instead government was employing per the rate of population growth, the unemployment rate would be at 7% right now with those jobs alone.

Paul Krugman says the economic dip was not a recession, but rather it was a full-on depression per statistical comparisons.

Krugman's diagnosis and prescriptions cut sharply against the conventional wisdom in Washington, according to which "austerity," – throttle back on government spending, tackle the budget deficit now – is the way to get the economy back on track. Not only is this wrong, he argues, it's making a bad situation even worse. He writes: "Now is the time for the government to spend more, not less, until the private sector is ready to carry the economy forward again." On the positive side, people are starting to look at the train wreck that is Europe, where austerity has failed – and how – to produce growth, and at our own protracted slump, and concluding that maybe, just maybe, people like Krugman – who, truth be told, has been right about a lot in recent years – are onto something. "All indications are that the economy will remain weak for a very long time unless our policy makers change course," he writes in his introduction. "And my aim here is to bring pressure, by means of an informed public, to get that course change and bring an end to this depression."

Read more: http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/blogs/national-affairs/paul-krugman-on-how-to-fix-the-economy-and-why-its-easier-than-you-think-20120502#ixzz1tkkQ1Rxv

Other interesting data shows the more the economy tanks, the larger the gap between rich and poor grows, and the more polarized the political Parties become.

Fix this depression now -- Obama/Biden - 2012!

Flip Romney has failed the Commander in Chief test. In regard to economic credentials, it's interesting he claims to have turned around dozens of companies, but always mentions the same couple of companies (like Staples, which can't be off-shored and provides low-paying jobs). I can't believe right-wing voters aren't demanding more evidence -- Name all those companies Romney!

I distinctively recall another "man boy who cocked his head with a cute smile" who also came to us through the Republican Party, George W. Bush, who ulimately ended up Lying us into War with the 2nd Largest Oil Rich Nation in the World (ostensibly because Bush had been an "OIL man" all his life, and oil was all he knew), and then Bush concluded his rein of terror by destroying the entire United States Economy.

Oh, geez.....we just got done with two straight weeks of this ad running before the Pennsylvania primary, and it creeped me out more and more every time I saw it. What kind of a father exploits his daughter's teenage drug problems from 15 years ago for the sake of politics? And why would Romney take advantage of it as well?

Oh, wait.....it's not actually a Romney ad, it's from his Super PAC. And he has absolutely nothing to do with what ads they run. Sorry, my bad.....

American Girl -

In all fairness, Romney did drop everything and jump in to help; that's the whole point of the ad. Of course, as a partner in Bain Capital at the time, he had the ability and the resources to do so. I think it's commendable that he helped out in this case and I'm certainly glad that the girl in question was eventually found.

What bothers me is that he would be so eager to pat himself on the back for doing so and to exploit what should have been a private family matter for later political gain. You would think that if the idea is to re-hab Romney's image as "Mitt Romney, an experienced leader and job creator who fixed an economy without raising taxes", they could have found an ad that actually had something to do with jobs and taxes.

When Mitt Romney was Governor of Massachusetts, he came in 47th out 50 in job creation, which does NOT spell "Job CREATION", it's more like "Job CREMATION"!

If Romney couldn't (or wouldn't) create jobs in Massachusetts, I wouldn't except him to be able (or even want to) create jobs all over these 50 United States.

It's more likely that Romney would continue to do what he did in Massachusetts and what Romeny knows how to do best -- liquidate American Businesses, sieze American Workers Pension and Retirement Money, and ship American Jobs Overseas.

Your figures are based on the number of jobs created. Romney went from an unemployment (UE) rate in MA of 5.6% in 01/2003 to 4.6% in 01/2007. Most economists consider 5% UE to be full employment. It would be very difficult to create (numerically add) jobs below that UE rate.

I will take Romney's 4.6% UE over Obama's 8.2% UE any day.

D, His state was at an unemployment rate that economists consider to be full employment. You can hardly expect a large number of jobs created at full employment. Which do you prefer Romneys 4.6% or Obama's 8.2%?

        #10.1 - Wed May 2, 2012 6:58 PM EDT

        Good question.

        But I need more details.

What was the UE rate after Willard for 1 year, and after Obama for 1 year?

Since it takes 1 year for previous policies to take effect...the first year really goes into the previous administrations column, new budgets and programs, etc

Kinda curious, honestly. I don't know either of those numbers off the top of my head.
