Poll: Walker deadlocked versus Barrett in Wisconsin recall

Updated 3:40 p.m. - Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker is virtually tied versus his prime Democratic challenger in a June 5 recall election, according to a new poll released Wednesday.

A Marquette University Law School poll found that Walker, whose efforts to overhaul collective bargaining laws in his state prompted the recall, leads Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett (D) by a single point among likely voters, well within the margin of error. (Among registered voters, Barrett leads 47-46 percent.)

If the recall election were held today, 48 percent of likely voters said they would choose to retain Walker, versus 47 percent who said they would pick Barrett, the Democratic challenger to Walker in the 2010 general election.

Barrett also leads his main challenger in the Democratic primary, former Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk, heading into next week's primary. Thirty-eight percent of Democratic primary voters prefer Barrett, while 21 percent would vote for Falk; that's a wider advantage for Barrett than in a late March poll.

If Falk, who enjoys the support of organized labor, were to somehow win the primary, she would face a somewhat tougher race versus Walker. Forty-nine percent of likely Wisconsin voters would support Walker in a recall versus Falk, who would win 43 percent of the vote.

The Marquette poll also tested the general election matchup this fall between President Obama and Mitt romney. Obama leads at 51 percent of likely voters to Romney's 42 percent share.

The poll, conducted April 26-29, 2012, has a 3.8 percent margin of error for the full sample. Democratic primary voters had a margin of error is 4.7 percent, and the margin of error for "likely voters" is 4.2 percent.

Update: The most recent figures from NBC's ad-tracking sources indicate that Walker and supportive groups have spent a total of $16.6 million in favor of Walker, while Democratic and labor groups have spent $6.3 million.

Here are some other fun facts from that Marquette poll:

"Wisconsin voters have been substantially engaged in the political process over the past 16 months. Fully half, 50 percent, said they had talked to other people and tried to show them why they should vote for or against a candidate. Just over a quarter, 26 percent, said they had put up a yard sign or bumper sticker, and 20 percent had contributed money to a candidate. Eighteen percent said they had attended a rally or demonstration. Thirty-eight percent said they had signed a recall petition over the past sixteen months, including last summer’s state senate recalls and those this year for senate, governor, or lieutenant governor. Fifty-eight percent say they talk about politics with family or friends at least once a week, and 39 percent say they do so with co-workers.

But here's a not-so-fun fact:

"The political involvement and conflict of the last year have also taken a
toll on conversation. Twenty-nine percent say there is someone they’ve stopped talking to about politics due to disagreements over the recall or the governor."

Come on, people - get involved. Put up the lawn signs, sign the petitions, got to the rallies or protests. But please don't stop talking to each other. That's just wrong.

You said it, JoAnne. It's silly to stop talking to people because you disagreed over politics--it's politics, it's government and talking and disagreeing is a critical part of the process.

AH, those virtual POLLS...

And wow, if it isn't misleading GOP Big Money Ads, and phony-all-the-way with Walker and his recall.

During last year's recall election, GOP Wisconsin ran fake Democratic candidates to confuse democratic voters.

Is GOP still running those 6 fake Democrats still, this year?

Their idea is to push the May 8 and June 6 Walker Wisconsin recall election dates to the later date of June 5.

And according to election attorney Jeremy Levinson, it is illegal to falsify declaration of candidacy. Felony election fraud is punishable by up to 3.5 years in prison. And?

Sadly it is part of the right wing strategy - make the enviroment so toxic people don't want to get involved!

To quote Santorum, every time I see Scott Walker's face, I want to puke. Like Eric Cantor, he comes off like a smug little sh!t. I just want to biotch slap these guys in their sniveling little face with every self-serving lie they tell. The lies about job creation in Wisconsin alone are WTF?

Blogo is a good comparison when it comes to power and delusion. Scott Walker will go down one way or another, and I'm hoping for some jail time. All that outside money won't help you there Walker!

Progressives are the first to be disgusted by Blogo. Yet there's Scott Walker keeping the race close with lies and raising over 13 million, mostly from out of state. And then Chris Christie toes the Party line along with Flip Romney and the rest of the GOP/TP. They have NO standards, it's Party First every time.

As for right-wing voters, the only explanation I can think of is they're trapped in their Echo Chamber and Cone of Silence. Why anyone would reelect Walker after all the bait-and-switch damage he's done to Wisconsin is mind-bending.

I refuse to listen to the big union argument. All they want is to fool the citizens so they can get more tax payer cash for their bank accounts. And judging by the blind liberals on this website (from all over the country) they would prefer Wisconsin go back towards bankruptcy to align with their political beliefs.

If Walker is tied with one of several democratic challengers, he's got a problem once a single one is picked in the primary. That said, the recall election will be a battle and the results will likely be close. The interesting thing is even if Walker wins, he could end up like Rod Blagoyovich because there's a lot of illegal activities being investigated.

Jody, you appear to live in Iowa. Your disgust for Walker must lie in your delusion that Wisconsinites want to go bankrupt or you just hate Wisconsin and want to see them bankrupt. Either way it's a Wisconsin problem, not some issue liberal fools from Iowa need to concern themselves with.

Oh, and this was interesting, too:

"The four Democrats will be easily outspent by Walker, whose $25.3 million
raised was more than 12 times the $2 million raised by all four challengers
          combined."

And yet the race is a statistical dead heat. As Mitt Romney could have told Walker, money really can't buy you love.

That's because you arent from Wisconsin and have no knowledge of the history of any of the characters involved on both sides, nor any insight into the issues that are peculiar to the state. But i think you're right, if he wins, it will be a blow to the democratic party nationwide, but dont worry, somehow it will get spun in the news that it was no big deal.

If you really don't like what Christie has done, is doing, and will continue to do, I'd advise you to move to one of those bastions of progressive thinking- Illinois, perhaps, or California, where the weather is better.

Actually, I wish all the progressives would move to those two states. Let them deal with the consequences of their addle pated thinking. A friend of mine just got an hysterical phone call from his daughter, who lives in the Mission district of San Feancisco. For those of you who are unaware, the Mission district is not, exactly, the area of the "1%"; in fact, it is an economically disadvantaged area.

It seems that as part of the May Day celebration, the Occupy idiots crossed the bridge, and doused every car they could with paint. My friend's daughter had just made the last payment on her car.

What a. Nice group of social misfits you people uphold.

Since Christie has taken office, he's laid off many police, firemen and teachers at a time when are economy is strugglng to recover. At the same time he was using the State Police helicopter to go back and forth to his son's baseball games. He cut state funding to the municipalities so all of our property taxes skyrised. He wants to use that money to give yet another tax break to millionaires. His administrator of transportation gave out fat contracts to cut the trees on the parkway as a first step of a program that doesn't have enough funding to go to step 2. He then spent money to put up ugly barbed wire fences to stop "terrorist" but now is going to spend more money to tear them down. And to top it all off, he evacuated 1 million people for a tropical storm. Name one thing good Christie has done for the state of New Jersey.

Jersey Michael: " Name one thing good Christie has done for the state of New Jersey"

Well, for one thing, he's really...umm... stepping up to the plate on that alleged incident of the state troopers escorting all those Lamborghinis and Porsches down the Garden State Parkway and weaving in and out of normal traffic at 110 miles an hour on the taxpayers dime:

"I just shook my head. What are you going to do. It's a completely ridiculous
story. Shouldn't have happened. Dumb thing to do, but let me assure you it's not the last dumb thing we'll see happen,"

Nor, the first, right Governor? Seems the same thing already happened before and Christie's all over it:

"But in a video from the 2010 rally posted to YouTube, the president of the car
dealership, Thomas Heffernan, describes the rally as a charity event and
suggests the State Police were officially involved in the caravan.

We start at the top of the Garden State Parkway and travel approximately 75 miles with state trooper guidance. Then we end up in Red Bank," Heffernan said in the video.

Christie said he had seen the video of the 2010 escort. "Who are those guys,
cackling," the governor said. "One of them saying this is the greatest day of my life. I feel so bad for him."

See? He "feels bad" - that's one good thing, isn't it? :)

In case you haven't noticed, Christie cost your state THOUSANDS of jobs by putting the kibosh on the tunnel project, and it seems he cooked the books as well to prove his point. I wonder just how long before he's indicted for improprieties...I'm sure it's in his future, as he is nothing but a crook lawyer.

Oh, then there is the lying...you should be very familiar with Christies lying, right? Seems he fell asleep at a Bruce Springsteen concert, and got caught...not by TPM, not by HuffPo, not by MediaMatters...but by the New York Post...OOPS!

...but he was just meditating, right?

Oh oh...then there's the little ditty of the State Troopers taking some high profile luxury cars on a high speed game of "tag you're it" down the GSP, endangering thousands of motorists...but he knew nothing about it, right?

            ...sure he did'nt...

So, nojo...take your fingers out of the fan blades and realize that if there were recall elections on New Joisey, Christie would be dog meat...

LOLOL...did I just say "dog meat"?

My property taxes are down a few dollars for this year. That's one thing. He's forced town governments to stop wasting so much money by getting the cap in place- so if they want to exceed it, they need to go to the voters.

Funny. Most of them find a way to avoid that.

The governor does not lay off teacher, firefighters, or police- the towns do. If your town did, take it up with them. Bring with you a list of expenditures you'd rather have cut. You'd be surprised how many programs in the average town benefit a handful of people- mostly relations of the governing board.

Christie's almost 60% approval rating speaks for itself. You like runaway spending? Good for you. Move to Illinois or California. They need people who are willing to give all their earnings to the state government.

A majority of the country is praying for Walker and hope he can survive this witch hunt. Are there more people in Wisconsin who care about the future of the state and their children or are there more government leaches? This is the question..........
