Rick Perry: God forgives 'oops moments'

The Bible may describe God's eternal redemption of mortal souls in a more soaring spiritual fashion, but Rick Perry has a more, well, personal way to describe it.

"Every one of us has ‘oops moments’ every day,” the Texas governor and former presidential candidate told his audience at an Austin breakfast to celebrate the National Day of Prayer. “America may not forgive you for it, but God will.”

According to the Associated Press, Perry's self-effacing joke -- referencing the infamous Nov. 9 debate when he was unable to remember the third of three federal agencies he would pledge to eliminate -- won laughter and applause from the crowd.

The November gaffe proved fatal to Perry's already-struggling presidential campaign, despite his team's attempts to diffuse the moment with light-hearted humor and a frenzy of interviews explaining why he "stepped in it."

Perry also took the occasion of the faith event this morning to pray for the current president, as he did at several prayer rallies during the campaign.

He says he hopes that President Barack Obama will "truly understand God's will to protect innocent life. I pray for his true understanding of God's will for this country," he said, per the AP.

There's on of the many reasons why we can NOT elect a Republican: You wouldn't know the truth if it slapped the crap out of you. When was the last time you checked the Republican Platform? The very thing Republicans have promised themselves they would do is attack women't rights!

"He [Rick Perry] says he hopes that President Barack Obama will "truly understand God's will to protect innocent life."

No President has anything to do with a woman's right to choose, and that's the way we like it!

      UAW,

      imaginary war on women

please tell us how there is NOT a war on women....I mean, what laws are the Republicans passing that will be an "inconveniece" to men - like vaginal probing?

Maybe the war on women is imaginary to you UAW, but not to the women who earn less than a man for the same work, or the woman that has to have a not medical necessary invasive vaginal probe before having an abortion, or the woman whose medical insurance doesn't pay for contraceptives or the woman who has to drive 300 miles to another state to have an abortion or because they are trying to close planned parenthood have to drive 300 miles to another state just to have a Pap smear, or the women whose doctors are allowed to lie to them so they won't have an abortion or the woman who live in the state that decided that pregnancy begins before conception?

These are real laws/bills that have already been passed or are trying to be passed and what they all have in common is that they try to limit a woman's choice and try to control them. I would definitely call that a war on women!!!

If you have an oops moment because your god has created the oops moment for you then how retarded is your god to begin with? Gods and Goddesses don't have oops moments.

            Only humans do.

It's OK, Rick. There's nothing to forgive. Being stupid isn't a crime.

Being a selfish, dishonest tool of lobbyists, enriching them and their corporate masters at the expense of the citizens you are supposed to serve while living a life of luxury at their expense is a bit more borderline. Most people would say it's wrong, but it's apparently not a crime either, at least in Texas. If you want forgiveness from America, though, first admit your own corruption and try to atone for that. You still won't ever be qualified to serve as President, but you'll be on the right track morally.

Then again, atoning is hard. Maybe you should just stick with asking your god for forgiveness since he never expects anything in return or any effort on your part to change or reform yourself. That's always much easier.

In the words of John Denver--Oh, God! I seriously doubt God pays much attention to "Oops" moments or politics either but He probably isn't too crazy about the republican plan to take from the poor in order to give even more tax cuts to the rich ala' Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan's plan. He probably isn't too keen on Mitt Romney's daily lies told either; the Bible doesn't say thou shalt not bear false witness EXCEPT when it's politics.

Yes, Rick, He is a forgiving God. Unfortunately, we mortals here on earth are not. We remember all the lies and innuendos that just poured out of you not that long ago. Luckily for us, it didn't last that long, although sometimes it seemed like an eternity. But I'm not sure you got any points for praying for President Obama. Does Texas have a monopoly on idiots (remember George W. Bush) who they elect governor in their state? Oh wait a minute. I forgot about Wisconsin (Scott Walker), Michigan (Rick Snyder), Arizona (Jan Brewer), Louisiana (Bobby Jindal, Maine (Paul LePage), Florida (Rick Scott), Alabama (Robert Bentley), Indiana (Mitch Daniels), and Ohio (John Kasich) to name a few. The republican governors association's members have a combined IQ that is 5000 feet lower than the average rock. I think the average rock's IQ is higher. In addition, none of them have any concerns, feelings or a basic understanding of what the middle-class needs.

If they did, they would all support the president for re-election.

How about figuring out why you made the oops, think about the state you were in before the oops and examine whether there have been such patterns in your history. Maybe you can be rehabillitated, but if its a major oops you may be considered incorrigible and then sentenced to a a life of oops or worse. Best to reflect why oopsing has been a problem. Relying on God's forgiveness is using him to cover up oops, best to correct it rather than ask for forgiveness then he's likely to like you better, that is admit you were wrong or you forgot or simply don't know what your are talking about. What a simple thing. I think God would prefer a little (probably a lot) integrity admitting an error.

God's forgiveness is a gift given by God when one truly seeks it with honesty and chooses to repent of sin or stop sinning. There can be no forgivness when none is asked or sought.
